So, the single-most-frustrating thing about working for Global Megacorporation is that we could have a really really great product that let us conquer the world, but incompetent executive management combined with apathetic software engineers renders our software a constantly bug-ridden, difficult-to-use mess. Shiro put it well: "Yeah, if your guys were competent your company would dominate the world, so it's a good thing they're not."
I filed a bug. "This extremely commonly-used field isn't working in filtering, and that's a major issue."

I've had dealings with an individual from a branch of Global Megacorp. I find him to be substandard in his knowledge of security. Somehow he thinks sending financial files over plain text FTP is perfectly fine. I've been trying to explain to him what that actually means and he's just like, "Yeah, it's the same method it was using before, it's just that you've changed your rules to detect it and now you're seeing the warning. But it's fine."

*AFTER* re-opening the bug, following my screenshot to find the field, and verifying that my error does indeed exist, he just handed off a debug environment to the engineer who'd asked me to file the bug in the first place.
Classic Global MegaCorporation, "Fix your own d***** bug!" approach. (And no, we're not Sony.)
So the engineer did some testing, said, "OK, it works for these cases, and not for these other cases, so NobodysHome's got a good point. We need to contact the team responsible for the object that contains this field and find out whether this is intended behavior."
So, what did bug guy do?
He just said, "OK," and reassigned the bug to me.
I swear, firing him is too good at this point. He should get a special "black mark resume" as in, "This man should never work in this field again..."

I sometimes love leaving my class notes/scribbles up for future classes to find with no context. And since I teach multiple subjects, it's absolute confusion for anyone not in them.

This is vaguely reminding me of the time I hit a problem with our financial processing software (you know, just the stuff we use to pay bills and buy supplies and pay our employees, nothing critical).
The first thing I do is check the troubleshooting guide and see that certain settings need to be set in a certain way, so I follow the troubleshooting guide's instructions and nothing works. I then contact division IT.
IT guy comes to my office, checks to be sure certain those settings are set correctly, sees that 1) I did indeed do that all by myself and 2) the problem is still happening. Division IT guy says, "Okay, this is a deeper problem, and because it's this particular software, we are forced to push it to Central IT." (As in he would actively get in trouble if he tried to do further troubleshooting.) He follows this with sincere apologies because he knows that 1) Central IT is across town and will only handle things remotely and 2) their competency level is generally below that of a slightly deranged moose's, and their communications skills are even worse.
So I open the ticket with Central IT. I immediately get a generic, obviously form-written instruction to check the settings Division guy and I already checked. I tell this to Division IT guy to ask him how I might get past the automated form response.
Because Division IT guy is nice, he directly emails someone in Central IT, cc'ing me, cites the problem, and confirms that the settings are set correctly, and could someone please help me with this problem.
The first response we get is "please check to be sure these settings are set correctly."
We reply with screenshots of both the bug and the settings being set correctly. He and I both reiterate the bug is still occurring, with all relevant information (that we have already reported).
They say, "Hmm, that's a problem, we'll forward you to one of our case managers."
I then get contacted TWO DAYS LATER (please note in the meantime I am unable to pay pending bills our department is responsible for) from someone who...
Sends me a copy of the troubleshooting guide I used at the very first step to set the settings correctly, telling me to follow these instructions to fix the issue.
I reply to her that we are way past that point, and include the email exchanges I and the division IT guy have already had with her colleagues, screenshots included (bearing in mind SHE ALREADY HAS ALL OF THIS STUFF). (Even sans email chain, the ticket contained all relevant information they needed to know like a full description of the problem, OS, etc. I know what IT needs to know to fix things and provide it.)
She basically replies, "yeah but, have you checked to be sure these settings are set correctly."
This goes back and forth like this several times.
I reply to her something along the lines of, "You have told me to check the settings FOUR TIMES now, when I have not only done this and CONFIRMED that they are set correctly, I have set you screenshots and a confirmation from the Division IT guy who checked my computer personally to be sure they are correct, and you keep replying that I should check the settings. Please get OFF THE FLOWCHART and actually read through these emails. If you are incapable of actually solving the problem, please refer me to your supervisor so I can find someone else to assist me."
She replies, "Oh, sorry, it's just that most people don't ever check the settings to be sure they're set correctly."
She then follows up, after having probably read all of the information I sent her for the first time, "I don't think I can fix this, I am looping you in to someone else in the department."
I wait two more days. (Bills still unpaid.)
I get the supervisor of the department to respond to me. No, he does not ask me to check the settings. Central IT is still alive to this day for this reason.
But what DOES he say? "Oh, we're very sorry for the inconvenience, but this is a known issue we haven't figured out to fix. Here is a workaround in the meantime."
The other people were giving me the runaround because they didn't know how to fix the issue themselves. They couldn't admit that, so they kept falling back on user error.

My mind battles with a 1930s economic trend.
Given that I'm half German, this will likely end with fury, productivity, and inevitable defeat.
So, here's my review of the God Eater anime:
Ooooooooooooooh. It's an adaptation of a game. That... explains much.
That's pretty much it.
(It was forgettable enough that I didn't even notice when I stopped watching, got up, and started cleaning instead, nor did I notice when it ended. It was never offensive while I was watching - well, except for that one girl's shirt, because neither gravity nor clothing work that way. dang it - it just... wasn't that interesting to me? Maybe worthwhile for fans of the series, but I honestly don't know. I know that there were dramatic stakes or whatever. Also people had living swords that were secretly guns that ate people monsters that def. weren't a weird new kind of people, that's for sure. Also the heroes wore redonkulously heavy baclets and it <spoiler'd> them, because <plot>.)

A kid in the school district just got diagnosed with Peripheral T-Cell Lymphoma and they're looking for bone marrow donors, but because of my age either the family or I would have to pay $100 just to get me tested. (And trust me, the family wouldn't be the ones paying.)
But at my age, is it even worth getting tested? Everything I'm reading is pretty much, "If you're over 44, don't bother."
Anyone know more than I do on this subject? Seems like a worthwhile cause, but the kid is <Current politically-correct term for black, because since I'm in Berkeley African-American is now verboten, but so is black, so I have no idea what I'm doing>, and I'm white and old, so I'm pretty sure the chances of me matching are near 0. Seems like paying to get an older black man tested would be more worthwhile.

Yep. So you'd've matched already.
So, being Berkeley, land of, "How DARE you assume my gender/ancestry/sexual preferences, you sexist/racist/misogynistic <expletive>," I've been told that "African American" is offensive (not all people with dark skin hail from Africa) and "black" is offensive (U.S. history), but nobody's thought up a decent alternative. So it's "people with skin darker than mine", which is pretty much 99.5% of the world population...
And the problem is, in cases like bone marrow donation it matters. Your ethnicity really helps.
So in this case yes, the young man has African ancestry, so you were correct. But in general it's no longer an acceptable term around here, and I have no idea what is.

Yeah, just the other day I had someone opening a PDF in Adobe, going to File > Print and selecting a PDF software printer...which converts the file to PDF...from PDF...and does a Save As...and then complaining that it didn't "print" and the software isn't doing anything.
So 1) If you're just going to be saving the PDF, do a Save As. It's easier.
2) If you are going to need to "print" the thing (usually because they only want select pages, which you can do just like you were printing a Word doc, but it's just going to save the select pages as a PDF, so it's pretty much the only legit reason to use Print instead of Save As in these cases), then you still have to hit this here button to browse to the location you want to save it, and then you have to hit this here BIG GREEN BUTTON THAT SAYS SAVE ON IT.

Also, Eddie Money died earlier this week due to cancer. I got to see him in concert once. He put on a good show.
So, there's a monologue from... something... that I know I've heard before, but I absolutely cannot place for some reason.
I recently heard it in a video by someone else and it's been drying me nuts trying to figure where it comes from.
(They edited their own voices into the audio with no visuals from the original source - just backgrounds of city stuff and sound-indicator lights, so no help, there.)

Yeah, the chances of your HLA type matching are slim to none. Your age has nothing to do with it. I suspect its an 'american' thing. Your recovery time after donating will be longer, and they dont want to be sued? Or its not covered, ect.
Here we have a country wide registry. If you want to be a donor, you get tested (for free), and your HLA type gets added to the database. If there is ever a person needing it, they just search the database, and if you match, they contact you trough your dokter.

Yes. For all kinds of transfusions/donations.
Your blood is more then A, B, AB and 0.
Your organs/bone marrow match is dependant on the HLA genes, and the prevailance of certain genes is dependant on ethnicity.

A kid in the school district just got diagnosed with Peripheral T-Cell Lymphoma and they're looking for bone marrow donors, but because of my age either the family or I would have to pay $100 just to get me tested. (And trust me, the family wouldn't be the ones paying.)
But at my age, is it even worth getting tested? Everything I'm reading is pretty much, "If you're over 44, don't bother."
Anyone know more than I do on this subject? Seems like a worthwhile cause, but the kid is <Current politically-correct term for black, because since I'm in Berkeley African-American is now verboten, but so is black, so I have no idea what I'm doing>, and I'm white and old, so I'm pretty sure the chances of me matching are near 0. Seems like paying to get an older black man tested would be more worthwhile.

NobodysHome, have you listened to NPR's podcast, The Big One? So far it is pretty good, in a scary sort of way.
I tend to listen to music while at work (because focus) and the family in the evening (because family), but I'll see whether I can squeeze it in.
I'm assuming it's about the eternally-upcoming 9.0+ quake in California.
I've got a stream nearby, a water purifier, solar power I know how to tap into (and have the equipment to do so), about a month's worth of food, and backpacking gear to get us a couple hundred miles, which is enough to get across the Sierras and into Nevada.
So yeah, I'm as ready as I can be, and Albany's on bedrock so I should even have a standing building.
But yeah, in general we're not ready for it as a population, and the continuing push to just build build build regardless of the consequences is going to make things that much worse when it comes.
