A flamethrower, covered in mud, saws, and a mini bobcat, all before lunch time.
8 year old me would be very proud of who I've become.
I was helping arrange job shadow opportunities for seventh-graders in a midwestern college town. Plenty of doctors, and lawyers, and architects, etc, but one I had the hardest time with was a boy who wanted to drive a bobcat. The big construction contractors turned me down flat citing 'insurance'.
Connections were polled, uncles were quizzed and we finally found a private contractor who was willing to let a 12-year-old dig dirt and toss it around.
If you're ever in a spot to volunteer to let your younger self experience this, please let it be known loudly and clearly.

So, does anyone know of a good reason not to use the Epic store?
I've been trying to research it after hearing all sorts of grar, and the summary seems to be:
(1) They're not Steam
(2) Their UI is crap
(3) They're partially owned by the Chinese
(4) Exclusivity deals suck
So yeah, considering Steam's got a nigh-monopoly, (1) and (2) are expected, and in order to have a snowball's chance against Steam they need (4). I typically hate exclusivity deals when they're between two well-established players, but when it's one (admittedly multi-billion-dollar) upstart against an establishment giant, I'm willing to cut them a little slack for trying to get their foot in the door.
And as far as I know, GothBard's company is part Chinese-owned as well. Happens a lot in the gaming industry. I don't see that alone as a reason to boycott.
So... anything I'm missing?

I haven't heard of any specific technical reasons why you shouldn't - no major security breaches (yet) or "games always crash" kind of things - nothing beyond what's reasonably expected, in my opinion, at any rate.
There does seem to be a concerted phishing/email scam going to get you to hand over your Epic store credentials, but that's not any different than any other scam.

Well, turns out it's a moot point.
Shiro's entire attitude is, "I'm not installing another d****d platform on my system just to play a game. They can just suffer!"
I have rarely heard Shiro so vehement; he's usually Chaotic Laid-Back.
So I figure he hates exclusivity even more than I do, and I'm certainly not going to push it.
So, Borderlands 3 in six months, I guess...

Beyond internet grar, the main actual meaningful complaint I've heard is regarding their tendencies to snap up indie games in the exclusivity deals after they've been funded on Kickstarter or similar crowdfunding services. The Epic store, of course, did not exist when these campaigns were running, so PC releases for them were scheduled for Steam.
Suddenly Epic snaps them up, basically at the last second, and locks PC players into either getting the game on Epic when it becomes available or having to wait even longer for the thing they helped crowdfund to get off the exclusive list.
And they keep doing it, over and over and over and over and over. Because for Epic and the devs, its usually a no-brainer monetarily - Epic gets the game exclusively to themselves on PC, and the devs get more money. But for the crowd that funded the game, many who prefer their games on one storefront or have personal reasons to not use/support Epic, it basically feels like having the game dangled beneath your nose after a long wait in development, then having it swept away.
This has led to a LOT of the negative press about Epic and the general distaste for them among players, especially of indie games. Because they do this constantly. It seems to be their current main marketing method.

How to become the coolest dad in school in one easy step.
1. Walk into classroom at the end of the day and casually tell your child "Yeah, I got to use a flame thrower at work today".
Bonus points: You have a picture to prove it.

I have! In fact my daughter will start working with us part time next summer.
In fact, we haven't been as hard hit by the labor shortage as a lot of companies in the area because quite a few of us have teenagers and then they get their friends to work there too.

Not wanting to create yet another account for yet another service, and not wanting to install yet another manager.
Another reason - I seriously doubt that Epic store Borderlands 3 will give me bonuses for having previous games on Steam anyway, so why bother with Epic store version in the first place?
Third is primarily on those who choose to make exclusive deals with Epic - ripping off customers who made pre-orders supporting the game before it was released, who were promised their game on Steam/GoG only to be told that have to wait half a year later unless they cave in and accept the game on Epic store. It would not happen if the Epic would not pushed for those exclusive deals in the first place - they are benefiting from their partners' dishonesty and failure to keep their word.

I am 100% with Shiro on this one.
Though six month delay slightly increases chances I might possibly get a better computer by then...

One of the PCs died in tonight's game. He was an Arcanist (variant wizard, basically), and he has been trying for weeks to Disintegrate the enemies. But they always passed their saves and only took 5d6 damage. Then he would (jokingly) exclaim "I hate that f~~%ing spell! It's b%%@*&*&!" Well, tonight he was targeted by a Disintegrate. And failed his save. And took 26d6 damage. And was promptly turned into a floating mass of wet dust (we were underwater). So he exclaimed "I hate that f~@!ing spell! It's b#~%!*$@!" And we all laughed, including him.
Edit: I forgot to mention that he said he was listening to music on the way to game, and the last song he heard was "Dust in the Wind".

Interesting fact - for 10 years Tala was told she was barren and didn't ovulate, but apparently if you pressure wash the walls any little things hidden in the cracks falls out.
Also birth control was in operation, but 99.9% of the time isn't so foolproof when you get to the thousands.

The following comment is not meant to be insulting, but is a general observation about some of your posts TVE. You sound a lot like those meat headed frat boys you deride so heavily. I say this as one of those meat headed frat boys (albeit removed 25 years from my last undergrad frat party).
You may have a bit less misogyny than we did back in the day, but the boasts of sexual prowess and general relegation of Tala to a receptacle for your manly emissions would have fit right in with my brothers of yore.
I apologize if I am stepping over the line. I realize that I am not a frequent poster in this forum and do not pretend to understand all the mores of this thread. I do not mean to silence or otherwise belittle your activity herein. I do, however, want you to realize that your tone is not so far removed from the folks who appear to be the target of your ire on frequent occasions.

Yeah, I've vented a fair bit in the past about being kind of uncomfortable when the thread's gone in the bro-y direction, but no one seems particularly interested. It's a large factor in why I took a long hiatus from the thread a few years back. Now, mostly, I just keep my mouth shut because I'm not up for the inevitable argument and don't particularly feel like being shamed for not being open-minded enough.
I guess what I'm saying is I am a regular, and I don't get the mores, either.

Honestly I appreciate the evaluation. A lot of that was part of a standup routine I have been crafting but you're right - I need to be more considerate of the values of the less...me.
This isn't a dimly lit room full of people expecting bawdy laughs. Especially having a daughter and all. Not just because, as people deserve respect and comfort regardless of whether they are similar to myself or my spawn but - it gets one reflective.
At the bare minimum I should sppiler jokes like that.
I'm sorry. And thanks Scint and Nylarthotep for the honesty.
I want to make it very clear that I love and adore Tala more than I can convey - she giggles more than anyone at my dumb jokes. That's one reason I love her among dozens I could list, from her ability to read people well, to her forgiveness, patience, silliness, similar interests, beauty, and perserverence. She has a filthy mind and sense of humor.
This doesn't make it any different to you, I'm sure, but I felt that was a necessity to convey.
I didn't make it well with my ex because I'm not used to the subtle differences like most people. She makes it easier because she sees there isn't an intent to be a jackass, but...well, I guess I assume too much as a result.

Speaking of intent, it was my intent to shift the discussion from the implication that I would need a chastity belt for a daughter compared to a son. If my daughter wants to have an active sex life when they approach an appropriate age, I want only for her to do so informed, wisely, and consentually. I feel the sexual oppression of girls is f%*+ed up. I mean I'd prefer it never happens - but I'm not ignorant of the possibility and THAT seems a far more meatheaded opinion to me.
(Again - simple intent clarification, not denial. As far as I'm concerned I admit I should've probably held that joke back.)
