In the second chapter when the murders start, my character - LG Crusader - was the one who got targeted with the killer's obsession, and thus when the investigation began by the NPC authorities I was the one they locked onto.
What the books seemed to expect players to do was to leave the town to investigate the murders on their own, avoid getting arrested when the suspicion was pointed at them, and eventually find the murderer and clear their name after evading arrest.
What my lawful Crusader wanted to do was cooperate with the authorities in this town that we had spent the entire first chapter trying to get on our side and work alongside rather than against, and hope that if she was arrested and thus put in a place that made her an easy target, the murderer might come for her rather than target another innocent victim or two. Which is very much the opposite of what the books seem to expect or demand.
Of course it all went to hell after that when another member of the party stormed into the mayor's office (while she and the captain of the guard were discussing my arrest and whether or not they actually thought I was guilty) and threatened everybody in the room with a grenade unless they agreed to let us go. That kinda killed the campaign, tbh.
Except that's not really how it's written.
The sheriff brings the first note found at the first murder scene to the characters quietly, and presents it privately. He wants to deputize the PCs to run the investigation while he keeps to the day-to-day to keep the peace.
The only reason the book gives for suspicion to turn on the PCs is if they want nothing to do with helping the investigation. And then there has to be several more murders with additional notes before it gets to the point of having to work outside the law and clear their own name.
Don't get me wrong - a DM can choose to rewrite whatever they want in these things
It's a mix.
DM had kind of fumbled a lot of the NPCs to the point where we, the players, were under the impression that the town wanted us gone and blamed us for the glassworks debacle (with the exception of the mayor)...and then the idiot pulled the grenade incident while your crusader was talking with the authorities about "Should we look into this whole Magnimar thing because everyone seems pretty upset about the Nualia thing? Might be best if we lay low" and my magus was across town trying to investigate the shadiest NPC we'd met at that point.
So no, none of us were ever under arrest (until somebody pulled a grenade and then got mad that the rest of the party was willing to throw him under the bus about it), but it certainly didn't feel like Sandpoint wanted us to do anything to help even before our resident moron gave them a reason to not like us.

TIL that Confucius lived during the Warring States period of China, where there were constant wars, tyrants pressed peasants into service, and things were just generally s#&%ty. Confucius sought to fix society by using the family as a blueprint for government: Daddy state owes his children citizens care and protection, and they in turn owe him obedience and loyalty.
Yes, Confucius was the original family-values politician.

I constantly quote Confucius when it comes to his thoughts on manners etc. One of my favorite Chinese philosophers. to be fair I don't know many more Theirs Lao tzu but I found his philosophy quite bizarre sometimes.

Anyone seen mort lately? also anyone played kingmaker (video game not campaign) yet?
Mort is busy with work, and possibly just ran another 29 miles in 6 minutes.
I personally haven't played it but my brother liked it so much he flipped through my Kingmaker AP, which is the first time he's ever personally looked through a published adventure in his life (that I know of).

So this is fun:
Yesterday, WW and I met with the director of my school (my boss, but also Teensy Valeros's principal) to discuss his transition to first grade next year. She dropped a bomb on us: we can only re-enroll him if we get him on ADHD medication over the summer.
The only problem being, the kids and I were supposed to leave Dallas on June 19th, and not be back until a week before school starts.
Now I have no idea how in the world I am going to find a new pediatrician, get him on medication, and still take the children to visit my family this summer. Because, no, it doesn't make sense to get a pediatrician in Oregon, and no, not going to Oregon is not an option. And no, taking him out of the school is not an option, either.
F**k.

Wow...
I don't know what Texas is like, but in California I'd lawyer up. The one time they tried to put Impus Major on ADHD medication he immediately became suicidal and the medicine went straight in the trash. I didn't know it was legal to require anyone to take mind-affecting drugs, much less children.captain yesterday |

Texas is pretty f+$*ed up.
And I say that as someone who has lived almost his entire life in the Midwest, also pretty f**%ed up.

So, this was a bit of a revelation to me, and is a really good example of how not to write an AP:
We're just entering Book 4 of Strange Aeons. The party is 10th level. And they have reached the very first location with a base value of over 2,000 gold pieces.
GothBard put it really well: It's one thing to say, "OK, this is a low-magic game, so the maximum item value is xxx and you're only getting 20% WBL" or some such. It's another thing entirely to say, "Well, this is a full-level AP and you're getting full WBL, but you won't be allowed to shop at all for levels 7-10."
Part of the fun of building a character in any game is the shopping. My gnome in Shiro's game has 120 pounds of random crap in her Handy Haversack. And yes, it's mostly crap. Vomit capsules. Foaming powder. A Feather Token: Tree in case she ever happens to need a tree...
...but buying all that stuff is fun.
Precluding PCs from shopping at all is not fun...
EDIT: And people say, "Well, you just had a 90-day boat journey. Why weren't your casters crafting?"
To which the easy response is, "Er, they started that boat ride at 7th level with less than 1000 gold pieces in cash each. Exactly how were they supposed to craft with no money and nowhere to purchase materials?"

Why I Will Not Be Shopping at Safeway Any More:
When Safeway first began blaring ads in-store, I was irritated, and stopped going unless it was absolutely necessary. Yet Safeway was still the closest store, and still carried many products that my local grocery did not, so I kept going.
When Safeway bought Andronico's and promised to keep "all of the local brands you love", I knew it was a lie, but I was hopeful. And I watched as the butcher meat degraded to the point I wouldn't buy it any more, my local brands vanished, and every shelf was replaced with Safeway Select Inedible Garbage Product. Still, there remained a handful of products for which Safeway was the most convenient location to purchase them.
Yesterday was the final straw. As I went to select a beer for my wife, a woman ran up to me and said, "Don't buy that! Buy my beer instead!"
As I searched the entire aisle of cheese for a single decent jack cheese, the only jack cheese in the 20-foot-long aisle was Safeway Select Rubberized Chemical Chew Product. As I was standing there, another woman yelled (quite literally, as I was a good 25' away from her): "Hey! Hey you! Wanna try a burger?"
I expect my shopping experience to be a quiet, dignified affair where I can search for my products in peace and, if I need help, ask a friendly clerk. Safeway has taken the Third World Bazaar approach, with blaring ads, screaming vendors, inferior products, and a general feeling of being assaulted on all sides by used car salesmen on speed.
I will not be returning to Safeway. Ever.
It is more inconvenient for me, but you have made it clear that your advertising dollars and cheap in-house products are far more important than my shopping experience and preferences, and for that I cannot forgive you.

I don't like suggesting this, but you may have to get the pediatrician in Oregon, as if you're moving to the area, then pretend it's a surprise when you "have to move back". I'm sure your insurance will charge you out-of-network...assuming that they cover it at all...but it sounds to me like your only realistic option.
