That seems like a design flaw that would become very irksome to me. If I'm going to play a character of a certain class, I don't want to be shown up by an NPC recruit. Granted nine times out of ten I probably wouldn't recruit someone of the same class as my PC (unless I just really really liked the character) because it would be an unnecessary duplication of abilities in the party, but if the game doesn't give you the option to recruit or not recruit but just adds people to your party based on the storyline I can see how that might not be an option.

this was second ed. Ability duplication was necessary to survive.

Moreover, the idea you are putting forthe here seems to be a relatively recent invention. It could all boil down to the fact that you are younger than me and have a different perspective as a result.

I think it's playstyle rather than age because you're younger than I am and I agree with Orthos here. :)

inconceivable!!!

Lynora, please pick the more flattering/flirtatious option, as you prefer.

However, I was speaking on a larger scale- games where the main character as created by the player was exclusive in class to the point of outshining everyone around them(note-not that they had exclusive abilities, mind) is a relatively recent invention in gaming, seen far more often in the PS1 and later eras and less in the Snes and lower generations.

The main things that keep me out of Fire Emblem are the fact that it's a tactical game system (something I'm still struggling to overcome my aversion to)

This has been addressed in the most recent incarnation, fire emblem awakening.

I didn't know this! Exciting!

some have gone so far as to call it Shining Emblem, but you may wish to contain your excitement. Much like orthos' forum with respect to forgotten realms, awakening ignores (or at the very least takes considerable liberties with)a great deal of fire emblem canon. It has divided the fanbase a great deal, and there is some furor over what the next game in the series will be like.

Me, I am not worried. Fire emblem is literally older than some regular posters on this board and if it were a person, could vote and drink for several years now, so a game that steps out of canon isn't going to bother me much. In fact, it may draw me in, much like this game has.

I do recall hearing something about that, yes.

Lol. Well, I appreciate the snow. :)

Honestly, I came to video games late and am generally strapped for time, so I don't want to waste it on something that isn't fun. I dislike overly powerful NPCs for the same reason Elminster sucks. It's not fun having an NPC outshine you when you're supposed to be playing the hero.

Probably comparable as prior to getting into NWN and PS1/2 era games, the only games I played either had no OTHER characters (platformers like Mario and Sonic, exploration games like Zelda, etc.) or were RPGs with multiple playable characters each with their own separate array of abilities (Final Fantasies and other Square games, etc.). I never encountered a game where you had one character you controlled then several others you didn't until I was in my twenties.

Pretty much this.

It really depends on the game. In an RPG I'm there for the world story and all the characters. In a game like NWN or Mass Effect or Dragon Age, I'm there for my character's story, and much less so for the various NPCs.

this could also be because you aren't into tactical games. They taught me early on that as important as the main character is, they can't do everything by themselves.

That likely does have a lot to do with it, yes. Most of the non-multiplayer games I play you either ARE doing everything by yourself, or you have multiple characters doing the job but they are all yours to control.

To me, it's not a fun game unless you're playing with the various mods, including the one to bring Khalid back to life. I just couldn't see a single one of my characters, regardless of gender, getting together with her. Sleeping with Jaheira would be like sleeping with my mother. And this is me talking.

I have never managed to finish the Jahiera romance, despite getting to what I think is the penultimate stage before

Spoiler:

The Harpers forgive her and give her a special pin, which apparently concludes things. Maybe it only happens after Bodhi vampirises your beloved?

You'd have to check the faq for that...I can't remember the details off hand.

Dude. I keep hearing the legends of Japanese green tea Kit Kat, and finally tracked it down at a Cost Plus in San Jose. Only ~ $26.67 per pound! Seriously. I spent $7.99 for a 4.8 ounce bag. Ludicrous. Chances are, this is the only time I'll ever get to try this because of the cost.

On Monday, Origin had Dragon Age Inquisition 33% off. I bit, but I didn't get any good game time until yesterday. It's fun, but I feel like my destruction mage (my spells are all elemental damage dealing, and I have multiple elements and spare staffs of other elements than my main staff so I don't get blocked off by resistances) is really, really powerful. If I switch to Cassandra, I feel useless. Can't do anything close to the damage my mage can. Varric is worse.
Well, Cassandra is flipping useless, so there's that. Have you leveled them at all? Or is it just because your PC levels faster than they do? It's not because you're playing a mage though. I've tried mage and fighter and it's pretty much the same. Your PC is way more badass and it becomes a problem if you forget to level your party. At least until you start picking up some more badass companions along the way. Not that I'm really all that terribly far into it. I get motion sick when I play so I have to play in very short increments so I don't exactly make progress quickly. And many of those quests are just so gorram frustrating. I hate having to wander around looking for random stuff. That's just the worst. But I want to find out the story so I keep muddling through....sigh. Is gonna take forever....

I am having fun, and I always nevel up my companions and give them new equipment. I just feel like both Cassandra and Varric do really crappy damage. A shame, because Varric was good in Dragon Age 2, and as a companion I enjoy his personality. He likes to pretend to be a greedy criminal, but you can tell he really does care about people. And that snark.

Best approximation? It tastes like cream and wafers, with hints of green tea and chocolate. It does have real green tea, not artificial flavoring, so the green tea flavor is pretty noticeable. If they didn't cost such an exorbitant amount (well, they do have to be imported), I would probably buy them over standard Kit Kats. They are good, but I can't really afford the price on anything other than a very rare treat basis.

Trust me - the last thing you want is realistic weapon and armor design in Pathfinder. All the fun goes out the window.

They are not light weapon in Pathfinder. They just have a special rule that allows using them with Weapon Finesse. Anyway D&D (and many other RPGs) confuse rapier with later fencing weapons, such as smallsword. Not to mention that picture of "rapier" in one of the D&D books showed curved blade, despite the weapon dealing piercing damage and not slashing...

Well, you can still thrust with a curved blade, though they are (of course) optimised for slashing - however, point taken, ha ha. Hands up who's ever seen a curved rapier.

And thurst is the most dangerous application of a longsword, bastard sword or two handed sword, but d20 gives them only slashing damage type anyway :/
