Golarion Coffee?

Quick random question for all the masters of Golarion lore. Do they have coffee in Golarion? And if so where is it from?

In the real world coffee was first brewed in southern sections of Arabia (Yemen). So I figure in Katapesh, you know, if they have fields to spare for anything other than pesh. Perhaps there are regional varieties...

Also I remember there being an item in the Adventures Armory that was basically a caffeine pill. Would you think a cup of coffee would have the same effect?

I ask because I plan on having a coffee addicted wizard, and I like to include little things like this.

Thanks!

Adventurer's Armoury includes details on Golarion coffee:

"This drink is brewed by pouring boiling water through crushed, roasted coffee beans. Coffee is a common part of many cultures in Garund. A very strong brew called Sargavan Red is potent enough to reduce the penalties from the fatigued condition from –2 to –1 for 1 hour."

and

"Coffee brewed “Mwangi style” has a wine-like acid taste that is too strong for a novice palate."

The former, known as "common" coffee is priced at 1 cp per cup while the latter is triple the price at 3 cp per cup.

Heh, I was thinking of instead of a drunken barbarian of doing a pothead barbarian, but a caffeine barbarian might work too.

The Exchange

Pot and caffeine just don't work that way....
Maybe crack or pcp?

Heh.

Pot = comically mellow though paranoid rage
Caffeine = comically frenetic rage

While we're on the subject of caffeine in Golarion.... Don't remember if it was Adventurer's Armory or someone else but I remember reading about a certain beverage called Crimson Aurochs.

Exactly. If it's not made from high quality Sargavan beans - it's crap!

Coffee is indeed common throughout the Inner Sea Region and beyond. It has been consumed in such diverse locations as the decadent town of Carrion Hill in Ustalav (Carrion Hill, p. 30), the City of Brass on the Plane of Fire (The Impossible Eye, p. 24-25), the town of Kelmarane in Katapesh (The Final Wish, p. 16), the cities of Taldor (Campaign Setting, p. 240), the Jittery Quill pub near the Academae in Korvosa (Guide to Korvosa, p. 18), and the Pathfinder Lodge known as Heidmarch Manor in Magnimar (Seekers of Secrets, p. 37).

Coffee is known to be produced in warmer climes, such as the town of Kibwe in the Mwangi Expanse (Heart of Darkness ... I mean, Heart of the Jungle, p. 36), and Qadira (Qadira, Gateway to the East, p.6)

It's reasonable to think that there are alternative methods of making coffee, as there are in the real world (e.g., using chicory).

Silver Crusade

The best coffee is grown on Mediogalti Islan

So I realize this is an old thread and that my question is completely insignificant in the way of things but... The weight listed for coffee in the AA is .5lb/cup I would say this obviously indicates that it is already brewed and in a cup. So how much is it by the pound and how many cups can u make from it?!

By just googling the question I came up with 30 to 40 cups of coffee, depending on the size of the cup.

Grand Lodge

I don't know why I didn't think to google that part. Now a question of price for a pound of beans either ground or unground. Anyone?

I would say there would be a variety of prices. I would put it at 1 gp per pound, seeing as it is something that you can find almost everywhere but no something everyone wants. The highest could be as much at 50 gp per pound for a more exotic blend.

You think a games company based in Seattle wouldn't have coffee in their game?

Coffee? COFFEE???

What we really need to know is where and what kinds of beer are brewed in Golarion! :)

Here.

There's also Khava a little further down that page.

This is what we were talking about. It is listed per cup. Brewed. Not by the pound and ready to be brewed. Ground etc.

Multiply 2 cp by 40. You get 80 cp or 8 sp per pound.

It's also grown in Nagajor. Nagas must love a good caffeine buzz.

Who doesn't? :D

I always rather suspected that Rahadoum trades more in coffee than its neighbors - not that they necessarily produce the beans, but they buy them, roast them, ship them, etc. I wrote up a coffee-witch once, with a very small cauldron and some other garundi spices, cinnamon and such...it's good RP for an Int-based character, as well, while everyone else is knocking back their beer. Casters need their wits about them more than most.

This is the win...

Just curious though, do you have a variety of different tobaccos for the pipe smoking wizard archtypes?

We already have a price for tobacco. What we need are smoking implements! Stat!

Ask a wizard for smoking implements and you're asking for trouble.

Grand Lodge

The smoking implements is a good point. I have seen nothing in regards to them. Along those lines chew and other tobacco products make for fun RP as well as IMHO in real life! WAIT! I just looked it up. Ultimate Equipment isn't out yet :(
