At one point, I saw that NH, where I live, had the highest alcohol consumption. I actually had to abandon the usual Thursday after work (which is midnight when I get out) visit to the local Uno's for a drink last night to finish my archetype instead.

I'm going back to school! So I'll get to see my friends, enjoy the wonderful cafeteria food, and probably play some Little Big Planet!

But really, who is going to relax when the Packers vs. Bears game is on?

Go PACK go! :D

I do miss chicken patty Wednesdays at my college's cafeteria.

Packers are doing quite well aren't they? I had mentioned in another post that my sense of disbelief of finding out I was in the top 32 was only slightly more than my sense of disbelief when the Pats lost.

Mmm, drinking. My Pathfinder groups usually meeting house has a huge selection of booze. We can make about any drink you can think of. Aside from my usual martinis, I'm a cocktail guy myself. The others love to taste exotic beers but I've never acquired that pallet. I enjoy whipping up a concoction from our goods. Made a drink last time that had Sprite, 44 North, and New Amsterdam in it.

Well, it seems that I have the most relaxing weekend planned of all of you - I'll be waking up early in the morning tomorrow to finish packing up my stuff and moving from a temporary apartment back into my townhouse after 3 months away due to a a fire. I'll also get to particpate in calming tasks such as setting up cable boxes, TVs, computers, networks, etc. and praying that the cable is turned on like it's supposed to be.

Then Sunday I'll get to do some unpacking, shopping for things we need to replace, pricing out a new desk to replace the one that broke, and catching Da Bears as they beat the Packers. Thankfully, I took Monday off work, so I will get at least one day to work on villain concepts and blow off some steam playing computer games.

I just read through the FAQ again, because I'm so paranoid, and I realized that I wasted so many words in my entry by not just saying,

"... as the _____ ability of the same name."

Ugh! I am so mad at myself right now!

I think that quite a few of us want to make some post-submission fixes. I know that I do.

As for my weekend, I have some errands this morning. This afternoon will see some board gaming and probably pizza and/or braai to round off the night. Sunday will be spent replying to all of the e-mails that have been piling up since Tuesday.

I'm usually a beer/whiskey person but I do like a martini I make in the summertime. Watermelon juice (if I can't find that then Arizona Watermelonade)+coconut rum+vodka. I call it the Tiger's Blood martini (stole the name Tiger's Blood from a slushy place that mixed the watermelon and coconut flavor).

A barbeque, essentially, though with some norms and practices different from the North American equivalent. We even have a national braai day. The great wiki has an article about it.

I think the pronunciation guide from that article actually made me less sure how to say it... I'd likely default to a dragged out bry (rhymes with dry).

Now that the deadline has passed for round 2, I have a quick question that I wrestled with while creating my archetype...

Which is the correct format when referring to the subject of an ability? Should we be referring to the class name while describing the abilities or should the pronoun you be used?

Examples:

  • (Barbarian) "At 2nd level, the brutal pugilist..."

  • (Cleric) "At 8th level, you can create..."

    Thoughts?

  • RPG Superstar 2011 Top 8 aka Tolroy

I chose the first option. Beyond it being the normal in most of the APG archetypes, I thought it brought more screen time to the new name.

The cleric section of the APG shows new domains, thus you would still be a cleric while selecting the domain. Same goes for bloodlines and schools.

The base class descriptions use the first example while the second example is used by orders, domains, bloodlines, and schools.

That is my take on it. This is kind of like backwards engineering a style guide.

I can't think of BBQ without thinking of this song. I'm from Florida so I disagree with some of the accusations, but it's not bad at giving a quick laugh.

When you have questions like these, you should always look at the archetypes that have already been done and duplicate how they do it. Thus, you'd refer to it by the class, not the word "you"...and, you can also refer to it by "he" and "she"...though typical etiquette is to use the appropriate gender based on the iconic for that particular class. So, for rogues, for instance, you'd use "she" and "her" because Merisiel the iconic rogue is female. You could also just say "the rogue," etc. and you'd be fine, as well.

The few places where "you" gets used is often in wondrous item descriptive text. And sometimes in read-aloud text...though very sparingly...because you really only want to include it in dialogue with an NPC.

    Hope that helps,

Very interesting! I was wondering about Pathfinder's he/she usage. The Chicago Manual of Style isn't much help. It tells you to avoid using generic pronouns altogether, and if you do have to use it, the CMoS suggests for you to use the ultra-clunky "he or she".

That's unacceptable if you're trying to budget your word-count! ;-)

I think it would depend on how drunk you got him first, and how you explain it to him :) "You see, Val, this is the easiest way to get into the Calistrian Temple, you'll blend right in, and be able to question the girls all night long!"

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 8 , Star Voter Season 6, Star Voter Season 7, Star Voter Season 8, Star Voter Season 9 aka Evil Space Mantis

I always figured what an iconic wants to do on a Saturday night is his or her own business. I mean, Valeros is out there, bein beat on by all kinds of vicious beasts and inhuman horrors, from 9 to 5, Monday to Friday. He's earned his weekends!

That said, with a +3 Will save at level 10(!), the dress probably wasn't his idea in the first place. My bet is that Seoni was bored, had had a couple glasses of wine and remembered that spare suggestion scroll they had laying around...

I woke up today and it was 0 degrees outside. And that is Fahrenheit not Celsius. The battery in my car was dead and I got to go outside and swap it out. That was fun.

However, I felt that swapping out a battery on a cold day outside (no garage so I waited until the temp had risen to 10 degrees out to do it) has really prepared me for the next round of voting. I managed not to swear putting in the battery (rusted bolts and tiny spaces with sharp cold edges are my enemy) so I may be good to go this week.

So tomorrow looks to be doubly stressful - not only does round 2 voting begin, but it is also Gen Con housing day.

Time for 5 minutes of screaming at the computer to load faster while scrambling to get a decent room in the miniscule window between start of availibility and them being sold out.

I've heard it might be less of an issue this year due to the new big mega hotel. Here's hoping.

Same here; to the extent that I didn't even post on any of the items. Last year I made a point to comment on all the top 32; it seemed only polite, since people were giving feedback on mine. Then I read comments, around the time the round 2 entries were revealed, where a couple voters were complaining because they thought the contestants should just shut the hell up or something. Don't know if I was one of the ones talking too much, but it rankled me. In any event, I was voted out of the contest shortly thereafter, so didn't need to worry about the issue any longer. :-) Still, I think remembering that has altered my posting tendencies this year.

I will say this, though: every contest prior to this year there's always an item or two that makes me say 'really? what were the judges thinking?' I don't feel that for any items this year.
