Spell Combat and Missed Touch Attacks

Round 3: Revised Magus Discussion

Example: 1st lvl Magus (who therefore doesn't have spellstrike) cast shocking grasp as part of Spell Combat, but misses on the touch attack.

On the next round, can the Magus still use Spell Combat to attempt a touch attack with the "held" spell and get his/her weapon attack as well?

Dark Archive

By RAW, no. The wording requires you to cast a spell to use spell combat.

You do not use Spell Combat for that, you use two weapon fighting rules. Make an attack with the weapon and one with your hand, apply the necessary negative modifiers.

I would rule "Yes, you can by simply use the spellcombat rules" (-2 to attacks)

Shadow Lodge

According to Spell Combat you can attack and then cast a spell. So as long as you don't miss with one of those attacks you can discharge the held touch attack and then cast another spell. How ever if you do miss then you lose the touch attack when you cast the new spell.

related question:

Is it possible to "charge" your weapon before combat with a touch spell, then engage the fight and use spell combat to strike with your weapon (incl. Spell) and cast a touch spell?

If yes, hell:
Weapon + intensify shocking grasp + spell: intensify shocking grasp = weapon + 20d6 dmg for the cost of two 2nd level spells. :)

You're assuming you also don't have a spell storing sword with an intensified shocking grasp on it :)

Right 30d6.. that hurts...

Without spellstrike, to deliver a previously cast touch spell and still use spell combat you will full attack touch attacks.

You do not charge your weapon in spellstrike, you just deliver the charge with your weapon. So if you cast an other touch spell, the previous one is cancelled.

That doesn't change the answer to his question. The touch spell is held in the same manner regardless of delivering it through weapon or hand. You can even change your mind and use a normal touch attack after failing to hit with spellstrike.

To clarify, I think what is being asked is this:

Can a Magus cast Intensified Shocking Grasp and hold the charge before combat, then combine Spellstrike with Spell Combat in the first round? If so, the Magus would full attack, channeling the held touch spell through his melee weapon, then cast another Intensified Shocking Grasp, taking either his free touch or free melee attack for casting the new spell.

I'd have to say it depends on whether holding the charge means you don't have a free hand to use Spell Combat with.

You could all of this except for the bolded portion.

I agree with you, you could cast a touch range spell, use spellcombat to attack either with your touch (against touch ac) or use my weapon (against full ac) - mind that both choices suffer a -2 attack penality.

Now if you managed to deliver you charge, well done you can cast the next spell.
If you didn´t mange to deliver the spell, either keep the spell or cast a new one.
