Can we have a "serious business" section?

I want everybody to have their say, I just really don't want to hear about it, and if I could but arrow it closed I would be oh so happy.

Where will they move those threads when they are inevitably derailed?

I appreciate your sentiment, but OTD is basically the wastebin of the site, isn't it?

+3. The OTD shouldn't be a dumping ground for all the toxicity no one wants to look at. Unfortunately, I have heard the position of Those From Above before: They don't want a separate section for politics/religion/needless bashing of anything because they don't want it to be said they encourage those types of discussions (although with the OTD turning into Trollhalla I don't really know what the difference is)

So +3 Heath, and +3 again. I won't be doing much OTDing until this issue is resolved either way. If I gotta miss out on the fun side of the OTD, so be it. I'd prefer to close up a 'serious bidness' forum instead, but it is what it is ....

Sigh. Either that or a silly business section so we can keep the fun stuff seperate. Not holding my breath. But it would be nice.

It depends on what you mean by serious business.

You want to not have to read serious threads. I get that. I really do understand that. The fact is that, after dealing with work, family, etc., you come to these boards for a little frivolity.

What I don't understand is why exactly it is that you are incapable of simply not opening up threads you don't want to participate in.

Perhaps the easiest way to go about this is to write SERIOUS right before or after the thread title?

It's not just a matter of not opening them. It's that they've taken over the section. It becomes more and more difficult to find the silly threads. And when you want to come here and engage in a little frivolity because you're at the end of your tether it's frustrating to be faced with threads about politics, religion, etc. OTD used to be where you went to hang out when you needed a little cooling off time. Now it's not, and that's sad. As a note, I don't open threads I don't want to participate in. You'll notice that you won't find many posts from me in serious discussions. That's not what I come here for. It would just be really nice not to have to sort through a dozen of those sort of threads to find the ones I was looking for.

lynora, with that understanding, I will endeavor to always mark any serious threads I create with a prefix of "SERIOUS:". I realize that that's not your perfect solution, but it is me doing my part to help you out.

Sometimes, I'll forget. But I'll do my best.
Of course, it may help to, also, mark any frivolous threads as "FRIVOLOUS:"

Thank you. I appreciate this. It is not a perfect solution, but it is as good of a compromise as can be done without having two separate forums.

You don't understand the problem. It's not just that there is ONE thread that is a problem, but how many arise. It's enough that a whole other section of the boards could be filled.

A lot of us come here to see what our friends are up to, not to deal with what the Pope says, or what CNN or Fox or MSNBC are saying, or what Liberals/Conservatives believe, or blah blah blah. That's boring, draining, and frustrating to see the same threads pop up over and over and over rehashing the same arguments again and again and again... almost verbatim.

Those same threads have to be searched through in order to find the ones you want to look at, and sometimes there are so many that you've got to go searching to find your thread anyway. Your fun thread is mixed in with a serious thread. "Silly" threads are an entirely different beast than the "serious" threads. They don't belong together, honestly, the same way the 4e section of the board is seperated from the 3.5 or PF general discussions.

I usually stay out of those "serious" discussions, it's not why I'm here. However, when they crowd the front page of OTD you don't have much choice in what you're seeing populate that section. Inflamatory thread titles draw people in. You have no choice but to see them because they're right there in your face.

Edit: Right, beaten to the punch!

It's just....I see the thing, over and over, appear in the recent 10. I don't even want to see the thing. Half the time I don't open the thing. I was able to avoid the pope condom thing pretty well; there's not a dot by that one. I'm out.

I just wish it was in a different section, so I could close it. Nobody's convincing me of anything; the only thing I'm convinced of is....well, I'll try to follow that "nice things say shut up whatever" adage.

Before the close arrows, it was the same with the 4e section. THEN, we got close arrow capabilities. I could close the whole thing, whomever had it open could have their happy edition wars or whatever, and everybody was happy, or at least not aware of the other. Peaceful coexistence, man.

If I had close arrows, it would be no big deal.

I'm guessing it isn't going to happen though.

So, I'm sorry.

NP, I think that the powers that be are more likely to realize you're asking for a change if it is in website feedback. It's all good.

See, THIS is why I come here. Not just for the cameraderie, not just for the silliness, not just for the gaming. It's when people who may not agree with each other are able to come together to find common ground. It's something I've not found in ANY other gaming community, and I've been around for a while. It makes me proud.

I really want to stress that I sympathize.

Having to skim through threads you don't want to read when you're looking for something frivolous isn't anywhere near as rude as finding a serious thread flooded with several pages of nonsense non sequitors, but I can certainly understand the frustration you might be feeling.
I think this comes down to mutual respect and it's why simply marking a thread as "SERIOUS" or "FRIVOLOUS" can go a long way.

Heathy, I think this is a great idea. By having a subsection in Off Topic called Serious Discussion, Paizo won't be encouraging, say, religious or political debates by having subforums with those names, but those would be a natural place to move such contentious and potentially inflammatory threads where the people who just HAVE to discuss such things on Paizo can do it, and the rest of us don't have to put up with it.

Fact is, Heathy and I get along great as long as we're talking about games and posting silly stuff. If we want to talk about serious stuff, we can meet at Molly MacGuire's to argue over beers or build ourselves a Facebook debate club to score points in front of a virtual audience. Otherwise, we can go on being happy with each other without him having to deal with the fact that I favor a state Church which would fine him for his nonconformist ways and without me dealing with his being a member of the Cannibal Lupine Party which believes aborted material shouldn't be wasted, but fed to the homeless.

PLEASE CONSIDER THIS.

This thread has been going quite smoothly because of the fact that the posters respect each other's rights to have discussion on whatever topic they like while asserting what they, themselves, like.

With that in mind, your above comment isn't helping.

How shall I say this... there is the problem that many Paizonians respond to trolling, abusive posts, belligerence, radical partisanship and ass-hattery with non sequitur spamming. Not saying that those apply to you... just sayin'. Cause I've seen a few threads you've graced.

By the way, you spelled non sequitur wrong.

A separation between Serious and Whimsy (Its a cooler word than Frivolous and anybody says any different prepare for me to "Flame On").

Is a good idea... that way I can avoid being sucked into conversations I later regret.... or growing not to like people because I have differences with their political and religious views...

The Republicans are dumb and Democrats are stupid threads are often a crazy bad wrong fun merry-go-round to jump on, sometimes though I wish there had been a warning... Like "posting in the serious threads may cause twitches, eye bulging and screaming and shaking of fists".

That way I could have put my time to some more constructive use.

AFAIC, the only one with rights in here is me... and while Gary and Ross have corrected me on this a few times, the feeling keeps returning.

Good to see Whimsy being used... Now if I can only work haberdashery into the equation then would that make a good non sequitur?

I agree with most of whats being said here, if we can't have another form dedicated to this sort of thing then a "Hide" thread option would be marvelous.

That way you read the thread title and go "Nope, don't want to see that, this is happy fun time at the Paizo boards today!"=D
