I'm a big fan of constructs. However, other than the occasional enemy, there seem to be very few constructs in Modules and APs. Will there be more love for clockworks, aluum, and the like?

Also, I'm looking to build a duelist for a pirate themed adventure in a few weeks. I've already figured out mechanically how he works, but I'd like some help role-play wise. I know you're a big fan of the swashbuckler types. Do you have any suggestions or examples that I can look to for personality and background inspiration?

Yup.

There's some cool swashbuckler inspiration in George Martin's books, particularly in the character of Arya Stark. Also, any pirate movie works—and that means going back in time to old classics like Captain Blood as well as checking out newer stuff like Pirates of the Caribbean. And while I'm not a big fan of the movie, "The Princess Bride" has some pretty solid swashbuckling in it.

You could also try reading some Alexandre Dumas, not so much "The Count of Monte Cristo" perhaps, but "The Three Musketeers," and the sequel to "Queen Margot," "Diana" has plenty of swashbuckling action.

Yes.

As mentioned, Geb is a nation ruled by undead.

There aren't any countries in the Inner Sea region ruled by giants, hobgoblins, kobolds, or janni. There are on other continents though (we haven't said much about those nations yet... but by the end of the year we will have as far as giants and hobgoblins are concerned).

Not directly, no.

It's that I really hate fantasy movies that are set in framing stories of "This is all a story being told by someone in the real world." Because that makes me feel like the movie/story writer is being lazy, and kind of saying, "If you find an error or a problem with what I'm creating in this fantasy story, it's not my fault, it's the in-story storyteller's fault, so nyah!"

I would have liked "The Princess Bride" a LOT LOT better if it had abandoned all of the annoying framing device stuff and simply focused on the actual story.

And yes, I understand that the whole point is that the story's being told and so on... I still don't like it. It's just too "meta."

There's only one case off the top of my head where a story goes meta in this way and I think it was done well, and that's Stephen King's...

On the movie track again, I rather like the 1982 adaptation of The Scarlet Pimpernel with Tony Andrews, Ian McKellan, and Jane Seymour for good swashbuckling.

Hey James any chance of a AP starting at a higher level than 1st?

Dark Archive

what gods do fire giants worship?

First off, sorry for the Meme James, I just couldn't resist the temptation.

On to the questions then. Given the Lizardfolk have written that they can gain climb speeds if not found in swamps, but still retain their hold-breath racial ability, does this mean that the Lizardfolk's ancient empire was once a semi-aquatic one? I'm thinking vast, primordial swamp with sweltering heat, dinosaurs and large stretches of open water where Lizardfolk Cavaliers on Elmasaurs patrolled the borders, or am I going too heavily into the Warhammer Lizardfolk mythos here?

On to the subject of Orcs, something I have been giving a lot of thought .... are they the spawn of Rovarug? It would make quite a lot of sense that they are biologically and mentally designed to basically eat, ravage, burn and destroy everything in their path, sort of like the Tarrasque sans the second part. I'm thinking the Orcs are born of the blood shed by the Rough Beast during his imprisonment, taking form deep underground and then going on to continuously assault the Dwarves till the Dwarves went up to the surface, driving the Orcs before them. Or are they just shock-troops designed by the Vault Builders that went feral?

I know there's a deity in the elemental plane of fire, called Ymeri Queen of the inferno. I would imagine many efreeti have a thing for her. Failing that I imagine a lot of the archdevils are also appealing.

Oh, I disagree. I was going through the movie, enjoying the snot out of the funny things, but in my head it was only a really good movie.

What placed it into my category of "a great movie" was the last exchange, between Fred Savage's character and his grandfather.

But yes, pointless framing sequences are lame. That's the reason nobody ever performs the first scene of "The Taming of the Shrew".

My favorite geeky framing sequence was in the Illuminatus trilogy.

Chris Mortika wrote:

Wow. I own multiple copies of that play among several different volumes, and have even starred in a production of it in community theater, and I have NEVER heard of that wraparound before now. None of my copies even include that narrative framing prior to the first actual scene, and I've got a rather dated copy that I'd have thought would have the complete text. That's quite interesting.

In another section of the forum we had a small discussion about the weak point in an adventure

Spoiler:
Escape from Old Korvosa and Glorio plot, discussion here

The weak link is a shapechanger (not a lycantrope) reverting to his true form when killed.

I feel that it is not a given that all shapechanger revert to a "true" form when slain.
The shapechange type don't say anything about that.

The only somewhat relevant rule I recall there was a rule or FAQ in 3.5 that said that when you were using a spell to change form and you are slain you don't change form until the spell has ended, but that don't help much.

I think it is DM territory to decide if a specific creature change to a "true " form or not.
That way you can keep alive some plot and some mystery that you would instead lose if the creature always reveal his true form on death.

What do you think?

John Kretzer wrote:

There's a chance, sure... but not a big one. Starting at 1st level for a campaign is very important—that's were a lot of the initial themes for a campaign are set. We would likely have to assume that the PCs are being created at higher level especially for that AP rather than being established characters who've gained levels in play, for one, and that feels kind of unsatisfactory to me. When you create characters for an AP, you need to create characters who'll actually WORK for that AP—we try to be pretty open about them, but the fact that an AP has specific plots and is set in specific locations does mean that certain PC choices are just better. It'd be weird to build a winter witch type PC for Legacy of Fire, for example, or a Chelaxian government agent for Council of Thieves, or a city-hating druid for Curse of the Crimson Throne... and by starting a group at above 1st level we drastically increase the chances of those problems happening.

By starting at 1st level, we're allowed to make a LOT more assumptions about where the new characters are from, in other words.

And beyond that, there's a lot of evidence that folks really really really love starting APs at 1st level. It's certainly my preference.

The primary fire giant deity is Zursvaater, the Prince of Steel, god of conquest, slavery, and weapons. He's detailed in "Gods and Magic."

Whether or not lizardfolk actually had an ancient empire at all is something that a campaign setting needs to answer. The information in the Bestiary is intended to spark exactly these types of ideas without nailing anything down.

Nope; orcs worship Rovagug and certainly come from the Darklands... but in my view, they are not Rovagug spawn. They're more likely to be feral cavemen who evolved into orcs after living for tens of thousands of years in the Darklands, perhaps after eating some gross Darklands fungus or other mutagen.

Slim. The blog post about subdomains for non core deities took a LOT of time to do, and even then it only scratched the surface.

And since inquisitors don't even need to worship deities in the first place... that's a can of worms I'm not ready to open yet.

I don't think it's a weak link at all.

I think that since it's important for the adventure that the shapechanger in question reverts to his own form upon death, that's the way it has to work in that case. It's not GM territory at all in this case—it's adventure writer territory.

If you as the GM think that's no good, that's fine. Change it in your game. But if the adventure is supposed to reveal a truth by letting the dead shapechanger revert to its true form, you'll need to incorporate some alternative way for the PCs to learn this information.

For a more honest question, any idea whats with all the Pirate games all of a sudden, I mean I started one and then when I was looking around the site there seem to be a dozen games set in the Shackles all of a sudden. If you have read the discussion, some of us feel it is a weak spot in the plot. There are several other ways to learn that information and even if the information isn't learned the adventure can continue. The main villain reasons to allow that information to be discovered don't seem too logic.

If I was to master it today I would change that bit trying to keep the situation a bit less clear for the players.

That aside, what is your general opinion on shapechangers?
- all of them revert to a "true" form when slain?
- some revert and some don't?
- something different? (like they turn into a blob of protoplasm end sublimate in seconds [joke, sometime I miss emoticons in this forum])

We've announced the Skull and Shackles adventure path after Jade Regent; it's set in the Shackles and is all about pirates. Not sure if that's a symptom or a cause.

Basically, Pirates are neat. And the latest installment of the Pirates of the Carribean movie franchise probably caused a flare-up in pirates in popular culture.

Having shapechangers revert to their true form when slain is the way it should generally work. That's how it's almost always worked in movies and stories, be they about werewolves or whatever.

If they DON'T revert... what's the point of them being shapechangers? Why not just have the monster it was posing as be the monster and just leave it at that?

If there's no way for the folks fighting against the shapechanger to get the big payoff of "Ah HA! it was a SHAPECHANGER!" then making a villain a shapechanger is a waste of time.
