Nope. Body thief grants an intellect devourer more options, and that counts as gaining power, something a simulacrum can't do.

The Tangled Briar, because it's the only one that's specifically linked to something I invented in my Homebrew and then brought into Golarion. Although as far as art goes, I think I like the Marriage best.

Q: It's been four years folks have been looking for clarification. Is there anything you can do to help escalate? Even just mention in a staff meeting?

You've said before that Aroden was a Wizard (who used sword & board, no less, and had a "Champion" mythic path). Irori strikes me as a Monk pre-ascensionm, Norgorber a Rogue, Cayden a Fighter (perhaps, with the new classes, a Swashbuckler?), and Iomedae a Paladin.

What about Nethys? Was he a Wizard pre-ascension? Given the advent of the Arcanist and its fluff as a "hacker" of magic, as it were, might Nethys have been an Arcanist before he made the mistake of hacking/divining too deep?

I remember you mentioning a while back that there are no Dusk Elves (as per the Advanced Race Guide) on Golarion. Are there Dusk Elves off Golarion, like on Castrovel? Or is this another case where the core book line disagrees with the setting?

I'm going to be running a Jade Regent campaign soon and had some questions and curiosities for you.

Are Sandru, Koya, and Shalelu, along with Ameiko, all ports from your homebrew campaign? I'm curious because they're very interesting characters.

With Sandru, Ameiko, Koya, and Shalelu, they feel like they should be the stars of the adventure path, and so the players will be assuming their roles instead of creating new characters. Do you feel like having the four of them be the 'main' characters is more canon, rather than created PC's stealing the show?

Sandru is statted as a rogue with the Swashbuckler archetype, but with the advent of the new class in the upcoming Advanced Class Guide, do you feel like the Swashbuckler base class is more appropriate for him? It mentions his trapfinding and lock picking ability in his youth but a trait can grant him Disable Device as a class skill. What's your opinion on this?

Likewise, Ameiko is a mish-mosh of rogue/bard/aristocrat, do you feel like she can get away with going straight bard for optimization purposes? Or does this deviate too far from her core character?

I'd love to hear what you think as you seem very passionate about this AP in the write-ups in each of the books!

Getting our FAQ process shaped up and more efficient is one of the goals of the design team, and hiring new designers to the position is part of how we're hoping to get that accomplished. Sean leaving the team threw a speed bump into that, but we're still working at it.

Which is why re-asking questions like this one that may have fallen through the cracks is a good idea; keeps them on our radar and, in fact, lends credence to them actually for honest real being "frequently asked."

Trust me... we are aware that folks are impatient with how the FAQ process has been working. We're trying to adjust that. But at the same time, we're publishing more hardcover books than EVER BEFORE this year, and we're in the middle of convention season to boot, and don't forget that, as awesome as it is to have new hires, they can't hit the ground running and immediately replace someone who's been in the industry for decades.

Further complicating things in this specific instance is that I actually don't have a lot of power to spur the FAQ process forward. I have been pushing as hard as I can already to get it going faster, but it's really pretty out of my jurisdiction...

We've certianly said that Aroden was a wizard, and he certainly used a sword and shield, but I don't believe we've yet said in print what mythic path he took. Champion was me throwing a non-obvious choice out there... I love when characters do that.

Nethys was indeed a wizard pre-ascencion, but we haven't said much more about him. He'd be a shoe-in for something with the archmage path for mythic stuff, but no, he wasn't an arcanist.

Since "off Golarion" would include all other possible settings, including your homebrew, my homebrew, and published settings from other companies... absolutely there are dusk elves off Golarion. Not on Castrovel though. Probably not in the solar system at all.

All of the racial subtypes in Advanced Race Guide (not just elves), unfortunately, never really went through the "on Golarion" filter. I do like putting out options for the game as a whole, but it frustrates me to do so while ignoring opportunities to support our campaign setting because it DOES cause confusion like this.

I did catch it. I thought the look of the show, along with the design and effects and gore and all that were spot on.

The pacing seemed way rushed. I hope they slow things down a bit, unless they're trying to do all 3 books in one season, which would seem poor.

The casting and acting and writing were pretty bad. I hope they shore that all up... but at this point, those elements are disappointing to me to the extent that I might not stick with the show. I hope they get better, 'cause I quite enjoyed the books.

The more you get into what a simulacrum can and can't do, the more you ABSOLUTELY need your GM to make calls. It's the most complicated spell in the game.

My calls:

Yes, a simulacrum can use all of those spells and items. Those don't increase its power in the same way that creating spawn (which is akin to having children) do—and no, simulacrums can't have children either. There's a difference between using an item that grants you new abilities or a spell that lets you command others and actually divesting a part of yourself to create something new... which is what create spawn (and having children) is about. Simulacrums aren't real in that sense, and can't propagate via biological or supernatural means.

Ameiko is a variation on a PC that I played in an old Planescape campaign about a decade ago. The other three (Sandru, Koya, and Shalelu) are all brand new creations I built for Pathfinder; they didn't exist before their first appearances in the Adventure Paths.

At one point, I strongly considered setting up Jade Regent so that the players HAD to play the NPCs as their characters, as a nod to how the old Dragonlance adventures worked. I abandoned this after thinking about it a bit more and consulting with others here... folks like making their own characters too much. The role in which these NPCs played in the AP was something of an experiment... I wanted to find out how much of a story arc load we could put on these NPCs to share with the PCs, up to even including them in the artwork along with the iconics now and then. Balancing their presence as "main characters" against the PCs is a tricky thing, but I've done that kind of thing in games I run several times and it's been rewarding, so I wanted to try to do something similar in Jade Regent. Alas... I was moved off of developing that AP at the last minute and had to hand those reins over to Rob, who did awesome with them... but still, I wish I'd been able to do more with it.

If you want to make Sandru an actually swashbuckler, that's fine. But he works fine as is as well. Up to you. There WILL be changes to his abilities if you make that change, and you should just roll with them... even if that means picking non-optimized choices, frankly.

Ameiko is intended to be a heavilly multiclassed character. That's part of her quirky charm, frankly, and is meant to reflect her life choices of constantly changing course from being a young noblewoman to being an adventurer to being a tavern owner to being what she ends up becoming in the end of Jade Regent. I wouldn't optimize her, or make her just a bard. That lessens and dilutes and damages her personality and character. Furthermore... not having fully optimized NPCs can help the PCs stay in those starring roles.

Have you guys ever used Simulacrum in a module or adventure path or something? I can't help but think that Simulacrum would make for a great story of a Wizard trying to recreate his lost loves/family/village or something.

If you (as a Tyrannosaur) and Jason (as a Minotaur) were an adventuring duo, who would be the sidekick? Would The Gauntlet play into the decision at all?

We have. In fact, I used simulacrums for two adventures I wrote for D&D back in the day... one being a short adventure I wrote for Dungeon called "Headless," the other being for my portion of "Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk." Both of those utilize simulacrums pretty extensively.

We've used them in our Pathifnder products too, at times. They appear in Rise of the Runelords and Wrath of the Righteous. They may well appear elsewhere.

The minotaur is the sidekick. The math backs it up. The gauntlet would be on the Minotaur's hands, but even then, the CR adjustment isn't enough to challenge the majesty and power of T-Rex.

What's your favorite class from Advanced Classes? Why?

I saw your secret message in the wrath of the righteous aventure path.so
when will we be getting this demon lord redeeming Adventure Path

Hey James I will apologize for the length of this post. But some questions will be asked in it that will greatly help me make an awesome grand investigation based Adventure Path for my home game.
I was recently challenged by friends to craft a Golarion based investigation based AP on the greatest mystery of the Golarion setting. The death of Aroden. Now don't worry I will not ask you how it happened just ask if you have an idea for a gap in my knowledge based on Golarion lore.

The AP starts out with the premise that all players are members of the Pathfinder Society. Young members trying to make a name for themselves and a rival party challenges them to a Society dual of sorts. To come up with the next great instalment of the Pathfinder Chronicles. And a bunch of mysteries of Golarion are thrown into a hat and drawn. And their task is to investigate his death. The designated Venture Captain that is to oversee this gives them their first step. Go visit one of the last surviving priests of Aroden. A mad (half-elf or elf can't remember) who inhabits an old church to Aroden. Because if anyone had inside knowledge of what happened it would be someone who experienced it first hand.
Part 1
The PCs visit said mad priest of Aroden who after exhaustive talking with the man realize he is rather delusional and unhelpful. But it becomes apparent through his fidgeting and ramblings he has lost his holy symbol to Aroden. This takes the PCs through the first adventure recovering the holy symbol from a nearby ruin and old holy site to Aroden abandoned 80 years ago. Upon it's recovery the priest gives the first real insight into why people were certain Aroden is dead. And becomes lucid from his madness for the first time in decades ** The following is my text from the priest and not canon**
" Have you ever had faith and been so connected to your god? Most people never do. But back when the church was a true church it was a thing of beauty. A church like no other. No other church on the face of Golarion had the surety that their deity would manifest and make things right. That in a few short years all ones patience would be rewarded, with a divine reward on Golarion." Tears fill his eyes
When asked about the death
Speaks through partial sobs "How did we know he was gone......? A clerics connection to his deity is an intimate thing, you are invested with his power to further your gods cause. It's a humbling experience that should keep one in check everyday....... That day was greatly anticipated, we all knew how it was going to end. We al knew we would see our god return to Golarion on that day and all would be set right. And as the time approached....... I don't really know how to explain it....... as the time approached I could feel every other cleric of Aroden. I could feel their warm faith and anticipation, across the vast distances that separate us we all could feel each others consciousness....... And I mean that literally in an instant we were all aware of each other, we thought this was it. This was Aroden arriving.......... looking back now I believe this was more like the loving embrace of a dying parent, whose final thoughts were on their children. And then it all ended, no fanfare, no explosions just emptiness. One minute we were all connected, the next we were all alone with not even the feeling of our faith magic around us. I remember the confusion.... it soon lead to panic, when we realized our spells were no longer there, that our clerical magic items in the temples had lost their magic as well. All turned to weeping, and the disasters that happened over the next few months are well documented....."
Part 2
Working on this one. I have the idea of sending the PCs to Arodens faiths equivalent of the Vatican, for further investigation. I envision a huge abandoned (except by monsters and as of yet protagonist organization) Complex in an old nearly abandoned district of a city.

Part 3
The PCs investigations lead them to an organization of Diviners and oracles that supposedly saw the doom that was to come before Aroden died. What they saw had them all commit Suicide before hand. The bad part is that their headquarters was located in the Sodden Lands. Part 3 has the PCs trekking into the heart of the Sodden Lands to investigate what these people could have seen. Do these long dead oracles have insight into why prophecy failed after Arodens death? Also another confrontation with a particular shadow organization as yet to be determined.

Part 4
The Eye!!! The vague ramblings of the deceased cult of deceased diviners reveals one particular unknown piece of information.
**** Warning not Golarion Canon*****
When the Eye of Anendigo formed an Island rose from the sea floor. This adventure focuses on finding the best (and willing) stormrider captain willing to brave the heart of the storm to take the PCs to the mysterious Island at the heart. Something no one has ever done in recorded history. And the exploration of the island itself. Whereupon the PCs will find they are not alone on the island. The shadowy protagonists have secured the center of the island along with a naturally occuring portal in the islands heart. Where could the portal lead to?

Part 5
Axis!! After the PCs face off against (the protagonist organization) and enter the portal at the heart of the island, they find themselves transported to the outer planes. In point of fact they find themselves in an abandoned part of the great planar metropolis of Axis. Inside the former divine domain of Aroden himself. In this part of the adventure I plan to make it more sandbox style exploration where the PCs will fight insane former divine guardians of Aroden, and guardian denizens of Axis who were sworn to keep people out of this domain. Culminating in the PCs gaining access to the heart of Arodens former Domain, his grand Temple/palace.

Part 6
The Grave!!! The final installment will have the PCs find the final resting place of Aroden himself. There they will face off against the (shadowy protagonists) one last time. Whereupon they finally find out this organizations true goal, to find Arodens body and there find the secrets on how to kill a god. Will the PCs prevail and stop this organization from gaining powers not meant to be wielded by mortals. Will they manage to keep the sanctity of Arodens resting place? And maybe the most important question of all, will they submit their chapter of the Pathfinder chronicles?

My questions to help me develop this Adventure path for my home group.
Question 1- Is there an official Aroden Vatican? And if so where was it located?
I know at the time the faith was very much centred in the Empire of Cheliax so I like the idea of dodging Thrune agents and Hellknights
Follow up- If it is not yet revealed or something can't reveal (Arodens Vatican) can you suggest a place it would be located.
Question 2- What shadowy organization in your opinion best fits my ideas as a protagonist
Question 3- I know Arodens graves location is a secret. Therefore can you throw out some cool suggestions as to where I could place his grave completely unofficially of course.
Question 4- Do you like my ideas?
Question 5- Do you think it will be to frustrating for my PCs to finish this Adventure Path and still not know what killed Aroden? (As I plan not to reveal it to them, because in my opinion some things are best kept secret.)

Re-read the title of the book. It's "Inner Sea" gods, not "Casmaron" gods. ;-)

If we do a big book about Casmaron, where Vudra is located, then maybe we'll list domains and stuff, but even then probably not since that's a lot of deities to list. A more detailed exploration of the Vudran pantheon and how clerics work with it would be a complex and unusual article in and of itself, and "Inner Sea Gods" wasn't the appropriate place to do that.

Swashbuckler. Because I've been trying and pushing to get this class into print since Advanced Player's Guide. Been a long time coming!

Holy wall of text!

1) "Ground Zero" of Aroden's faith before his death was in Westcrown in Cheliax.

2) No comment—aka pick your favorite shadowy group and use them.

3) Nope. Pick a place you think is cool.

4) No comment. I've found that the best route when it comes to Aroden questions is to stay quiet and help promote the mystery.

5) I think so. If you're going to do an entire campaign about this and NOT reveal how Aroden died in your version of Golarion, that'd certainly frustrate me as a player.

Would Nethys grant powers to Paladins or Anti-paladins?
No.
Hate to bring this back but I was just reading his articles in TTFB and Inner Sea Gods and they specifically call out Paladins. Does that refer to converts or is it an oversight?

Prove it with a detailed citation, please, and I'll explain it then! :-)

Possible adventure-site?

Sure... but then again, ANYWHERE is a possible adventure site.

What rules from Occult Mysteries are permitted for use in the Pathfinder Society?

Not my call. You'll have to look to the Pathfinder Society folks (Mike and John) for that answer.

Hey James,

-Do scholars on Golarion understand concepts like gravity? Since it was established in Distant Worlds that at least some people can understand basic astrophysics.

-Do constructs radiate magic if they are within the radius of detect magic? What about clockwork constructs?

Yes, they do.

No, neither of them do.

You have probably already asked this, and will likely be asked again but:

It is true that free actions can only be taken during your turn, right?
(Unless stated otherwise, such as speaking.)

I have yet to see anything in a rulebook, FAQ, or post that definitively answers this question. I apologize in advance if there already is one that I missed.

I personally think that free actions can only be taken during your turn because it is MASSIVELY implied and doesn't make much sense otherwise, but others say differently and I would like a source to cite.

Had a question about angels in the bestiary. Was wondering why there aren't the different choirs of angels that you see in Christianity. Things like seraphs, archangels, and cherub?
