You hear someone say "It is the nature of Man to want what he can't have. So he dreams of Utopia." What you think of or respond to this?
You asked what I thought of, and as it turns out, using the word "man" as a synonym for "humanity" is one of my big pet peeves, so what I thought of was that it would have been better to ask, "It is the nature of humanity to want what he can't have. So he dreams of Utopia." I don't mind the use of the masculine pronoun there, since that's kinda what English forces us, although the feminine one works just as well obviously... and using the word "humanity" instead of a capitalized "Man" makes the masculine pronoun seem less exclusionary.
As for the phrase itself? Feels old-fashioned and outdated for the reasons I just detailed above.
My apologies. When I try not to be literal minded it turns out that is what the situation calls for. Sigh...

Wouldn´t it be interesting and good for you guys to tweak that playtest and developing process a bit, making more use of your great GM and player base to find out about such things, incorporating them and and in the end eventually developing a more rounded out product?
Just a suggestion, not that i wouldn´t love my Pathfinder and spend way to much time with it^^
can't comment in the advanced class guide forums anymore. where can we bring it to their attention? I've copied the ability descriptions in question, so they're easier to reference. The end result is using say a falchion or greatsword one handed with a -2 to attacks, but being able to count it as a piercing weapon and use finesse and precise strike with it.
Swashbuckler weapon training then gives it improved critical for free at 5th level.
compare a swashbuckler 5 with a rapier and 14 dex:
mwk rapier +9 (1d6+6/15-20)
swashbuckler 3/barbarian (titanmauler) 2 with a falchion and 14 dex:
mwk falchion +6 (2d4/18-20)
mwk greatsword +6 (2d6/19-20)
a swashbuckler 5 w/ a scimitar and dervish dance feat:
mwk scimitar +9 (1d6+8/15-20)
in an unoptimized comparison. Thematically the abilities seem like they should stack: you learn how to wield a two-handed weapon in one hand while fighting giants. then you apply that knowledge to how to wield the weapon with finesse and grace one handed.
Choose one type of one-handed slashing weapon.
Prerequisites: Dex 13, Weapon Finesse, proficient with chosen weapon.
Benefit: When wielding your chosen weapon one handed, you can treat it as a one-handed piercing weapon for all feats and class abilities that require such a weapon (such as swashbuckler’s precise strike). The weapon must be one for your size.
Dervish dance is a similar feat, though it uses wording like Slashing Grace when referring to what it can be applied to, whereas Jotungrip just says "power attack, strength bonus to damage, and the like."
You have learned to turn your speed into power, even with a heavier blade.
Prerequisites: Dexterity 13, Weapon Finesse, Perform (dance) 2 ranks, proficient with scimitar.
Benefit: When wielding a scimitar with one hand, you can use your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier on melee attack and damage rolls. You treat the scimitar as a one-handed piercing weapon for all feats and class abilities that require such a weapon (such as a duelist’s precise strike ability). The scimitar must be for a creature of your size. You cannot use this feat if you are carrying a weapon or shield in your off hand.

Hayato Ken |

How does your swashbuckler get 1d6+6 with the rapier?
On level 5 it should be +5 damage from the class feature, then adding in DEX eventually via feat or enchantment. It is also very unsure though if the "agile" enchantment can be added to a 2-handed weapon, since it says "finesse weapon". Guess that build would more lend itself to vital strike stuff and doubling the swashbuckler damage bonus with a panache point.
You can post it either in the product thread or the paizo blog thread. I did both already.

![]() |

+5 precision, +1 from weapon training.
got enough feats and would even qualify for weapon focus and specialization for +1/+2 as well.
add Agile to the weapon about that level too, but if you keep str around 14 for power attack, its not much difference.
ahh, i'll follow your posts there to see what happens then. thanks =D

I don´t expect much to happen unfortunately, since some of the people there seem to have very strong beliefs not to be influenced by others and tight schedules.
I see that as a bit unfortunate, since it is partly disregarding a lot of information that could really help and improve outcomes, making a better experience for everyone, on the other hand i dislike the "I see it that way and therefore it has to be that way" attitude in designers and GM´s alike, no personal offense meant. Just, it doesn´t make for a good group experience or community often. Science is on my side there ;)

James Jacobs is a fake avatar being fronted by Merisel.
Another reliable source insists that James Jacobs is actually handled by "Team Jacob" a pool of staff persons who cooperatively not only write each post, but control the James Jacobs robot during public appearances. Any jerkiness in his motions is a sign of momentary team disagreement.

1) Were there any demon lords that you would have liked to featured more in Wrath of the Righteous but couldn't because of space/story constraints?
2) If you wanted to increase the presence of Sifkesh, Shax and Xoveron in WotR, where would you add them or their followers/allies?
Thanks!

They're in a chronological order, right? Like how each AP takes place a year after the preceding one?
No AP "takes a place a year after the precending one". Every AP is designed to be played at any date from Golarion's recent history, except for Shattered Star which assumes that RotRL, CotCT and SD played out in 4707/4708/4709 and Reign of Winter which is hardwired to 4712/4713.

While Dave Gross' Count and Radovan has a slight continuity to them, Death's Heretic by James Sutter has no connection to any of the other novels. Same goes for all the Tales by differant authors, they're all pretty self contained.

The AP's don't actually "take place" at all. Given that many of them would severely alter the campaign world, they aren't part of Golarion's canon history.

Have you seen Attack on Titan?
If so, how much? You really can't stat them out all fan-like if you haven't read the manga.
Personally, especially considering what they are, I think that normal Titans would be humanoids with the human subtype. The Beast Titan that's implied to be the absolute central villain is an outsider.

Tell us. On these boards. At conventions. And tell your friends and FLGS owners you want us to do it. Convince them to do the same. And show us that you're interested in buying and supporting high-powered games by giving Mythic Adventures, Wrath of the Righteous, Inner Sea Gods, and similar products good reviews. And it should go without saying, vote with your wallet. If we see SUPER strong sales for the types of products that would indicate an interest in deity rules... that could make a difference too.
But I gotta tell you... this is a particularly tough uphill battle, since we at Paizo really value NOT giving deities full on stats, since it helps them feel more all-powerful when a player doesn't know how many hit points they have.

Mr. James Jacobs
how the spell awaken acctually works if i want to cast it on my animal companion? how doe his level as cohort progress? it will start with 1 lvl class when i cast the spell or 2hd animal and start to take class levels as the party takes xp?
The animal companion becomes a magical beast and retains its stats it gained as your animal companion, but is no longer your animal companion. It's just a friend or an rival, depending on how you treated it up to that point. If you take Leadership, your GM might let you take the awakened animal companion as a cohort. In any event, you would be able to gain a replacement animal companion of the appropriate level.
The awakened animal companion cohort gains the +2 HD as normal per the spell. Whether or not it can later gain class levels, and when it gains its 1st class level, is up to your GM.

So, this is a set of questions that have been running through my head for a bit. Yes, they are silly but I'm curious.
1.) Who came up with the Rum Ration rules for Skull and Shackles? Was it Rob McReary, someone else, or you don't know?
2.) Are there any world altering repercussions to rum being one of the deadliest poisons known to man (no save, 1d3 Con)?
3.) Is there any canonical explanation why every pirate crew, merchant vessel, and Navy ship doesn't drink itself to death within a week of setting off?

Not seeing a question there, and I'd prefer that folks would keep on subject here and not clutter the thread up. If you want to talk optimization or character builds, please start a new thread for those discussions, thanks!
EDIT: Found the question at the start. Still... please keep the posts here to questions.
You can comment on the general rules board and elsewhere... but the truth is at this point onward, the rules team has their heads down working on that book and isn't spending a lot of time on the boards. My advice? Don't try to game the system. The swashbuckler was built to fill a specific niche that was underserved in the game, not to give folks a way to sneak in two-handed weapon fighting with a one-handed character option. My preference would be to keep the two-handed weapons to the barbarians, paladins, and fighters, frankly.

Those that feature the same characters are in chronological order, and do form series of books, but overall, no, they're not. You can read "Death's Heretic" first without issue.
As for APs, they work the same. They are published in chronological order, because that's the way reality forces us to do so, but in game we assume NONE of them have taken place. You can play them (with Shattered Star being the only exception) in any order you want.

1) That's a Rob question. I suspect it was Rich Pett who came up with the initial rules, then Rob developed them into what made it into print. When we played the game (after the 1st adventure went to print, alas), he realized that having the rum do Con damage was probably too much... but that was a weird artifact/side effect of how we'd done rules for drugs to that point, to a certain effect. In hindsight, having the rations do Wisdom damage might have made more sense, or even better, simply grant a non-stacking Con penalty.
2) Yes. The rules shouldn't work that way, in large part BECAUSE it implies that rum is the most deadly poison known to humanity.
3) No, because it was an error.

Hi James,
First time poster, long time lurker. I've read the two responses you've had about being careful with mythic cohorts. Right now my party is playing through Wrath of the Righteous and I've selected the Marshal mythic path. My next path ability will most likely be Loyalty, which grants me leadership as a feat.
1) Would that qualify for your suggested requirement of taking a mythic feat for a mythic cohort, or are you suggesting to get leadership as a normal feat and then using a mythic feat to get "Mythic Leadership" as well? AFAIK mythic leadership doesn't exist currently, so it'd be a house rule thing.
2) If my character was able to attract a mythic cohort, would you suggest the cohort be two character levels AND two mythic tiers below my character's?
Thanks,
Craig
