So since summoners are from the nation that is now a seething, writhing, demon-infested pit-in-the-planar-divide, are the designers going to be taking advantage of the fact that the summoner class comes from this region in Golarion?

There were summoners in Sarkoris, but that's not the "place where they are from." There can be summoners in other parts of the world, but we just don't have any big presence for them.

There will be a summoner NPC in Wrath of the Righteous, but only one. They're still not really a huge deal in Golarion, even in the Worldwound. Conjurers and clerics and other spellcasters still represent the bulk of this type of character in the Worldwound, since demons are more important than eidolons in the Worldwound.

How could the rules, races and monsters of Pathfinder be adopted to a modern setting?

Like, Golarion urban fantasy.

Wizards of the Coast did this several years ago for D&D with D20 Modern and their Urban Arcana campaign setting. That's one way you could do so.

Were I to do a Pathfinder modern fantasy game, I would start with the setting material and develop that, working backwards from the flavor to decide what sorts of rules elements were needed.

That's the part of your design philosophy I don't like, but I guess it help avoid bloating the system with too many rules.

(shrug)

Rules just for the sake of rules are boring, in my opinion.

That aside, I wonder how many people asking for "Pathfinder Modern" actually want a low/no magic Pathfinder('s rules system)?

I assume none, or close to none. Pathfinder Modern is a VERY different thing than low magic/no magic fantasy.

Some advice for Kingdom Building. I'm GMing a Kingmaker game, only it takes place on a chain of islands much like the Caribbean. That means, there's a lot of jungle per hex. My players and I noticed that for farms, you could only build them on plains, hills, and deserts, which this island doesn't have much of. Having visited farms in Puerto Rico, there are definitely farms out in cleared areas that were once rain forests. Would you consider it fine to allow farms on jungle tiles and treat them as hill tiles for pricing (4 BP), to represent the cost of clearing an area?

I would create special house rules for slash-and-burn, myself. Cutting down jungle involves getting rid of whatever nasties (or innocent jungle-dwelling grippli or the like) is living there in addition to cutting logs. That sounds like an adventure seed, actually...

Sure.

I like both ideas, thanks. Those jungles hexes they own have been mostly cleared of monsters so it should be fine.

Hack, foiled by being late. I was just thinking of asking if this thread reaching 666 would have some world shattering consequence.

Reaching this number will not even conjure a minor shoggoth?

I've played a heavily modified Kingmaker game, but that game fell apart about 1/3 the way through the first adventure. I"m currently playing in Skull & Shackles, and am about 1/3 the way through the 2nd adventure.

Nah. Shoggoths have no interest in or connection to 666.

A question on Mass Combat. I know the hp of an army equals the ACR + the average on their hit die. But, what if the ACR is fractional? My group is making an army but it's a medium sized army of alchemists which leaves them at ACR 1/4 and HP 1.

Also, since Alchemists have bombs, would I have to pay for the Ranged resource (2 BP), or do they get the ability to attack at a range for free? THanks!

The weapon isn't stupid. It knows what's going on. It might use the PC as a tool to get itself into the hands of a better master, or it might try to shape the PC into its puppet.

And if the PC has a high enough will save to resist it, and is smart enough to know not to trust it too much?

If the ACR drops too low, what you have isn't powerful or effective enough to be an army. Add more creatures until it hits ACR 1.

James,

What skills should be used to represent a character with knowledge in astronomy and advanced mathematics?

Knowledge (mathematics) + knowledge (astronomy)?
Or one of the several subgroups of the knowledge skill already published (arcana, nature, planes, geography etc)?

Faiths of Balance mentions that the Church of Abadar has a set hierarchy as in a merchantile house, and that the head of a small temple is called banker, while that of a large temple is an archbanker. What sorts of titles do lower level clergy carry?

IANJJ but I would imagine instead of titles lie 'priest' or 'father' they have 'teller' or 'bank teller'.

Probably around level 3 you become a Junior Loans Manager...

If not, was it because you weren't interested, or it just never happened?

Every new skill you add to the game causes inflation, in that each time you do so, the value of a skill rank decreases since there's more to choose from. As a result, I really don't encourage the addition of new skills to the base game unless you're making some fundamental changes to the assumption of what the base game is.

Astronomy is already more or less covered by Knowledge (geography) in the game. It's not perfect, but it's close enough. Also, it's a skill that doesn't get a lot of use in the game, so giving it more to do is good.

In the same vein, I'd link knowledge of advanced mathematics and technology to Knowledge (engineering).

We've not really delved much into the titles of lower level clergy for religions; we mention some of this here and there in Sean's deity articles in Pathfinder now and then, but I don't want to "strand" that information here in a thread this immense because I'll never remember it when it comes time to put those names in print.

AKA: We'll cover that info some day, but have not done so yet.

I've played some, yeah. Sean ran an all-drow high-level game for a year. And I've been in and run games that spend a significant portion of time in the Darklands/Underdark/Deepearth/whatever you want to call it.

What I love about the setting is that it's a really compelling combination of familiar and absolutely alien landscapes and societies.

If an alchemist's bomb isn't mentioned as one of the numerous special abilities that an army can have, like breath weapons or lay on hands, then just treat it as the spellcasting ability. It's essentially the same thing.

That depends on what kind of story you wanted to tell. I would say that the demons there would teleport out of the way at the last minute, and that while the crater and devastation would destroy a lot of the worldwound, it would also finish the job and tear reality open. In the same way you start bleeding if you rip off a scab, the Worldwound would explode and cause a much more deveastating Abyssal plague upon the world than the meteor itself did.

James,

I cannot find any precedent for this and hoped you would have an answer or at least an opinion:

Do Monkey Goblins count as Goblins for feats, traits, and/or archetypes? Or are they completely unique? And if so, is there any chance of getting more content in the future for the tree dwelling brethren of everyone's favorite small green monster?

It could, but I think that Knowledge (geography) works better. And that's what I've been using in some recent adventures that feature space stuff (like "Doom Comes to Dustpawn" and "The Dragon's Demand").

Luck, perseverance, and stubbornness.

I moved from California to Washington pretty much to be local to Wizards of the Coast, and eventually ended up working as a temp there. And eventually got hired permanently there, until I was laid off and then brought back as a temp and then eventually hired on at Paizo after about 5 attempts to get hired by WotC's R&D department and the magazine department while it was still there. I started submititng writing samples to TSR and Dungeon magazine at about 14 years old back in 1984 or thereabouts, got my first publication in Dungeon #12, and have been working at it ever since.

If great A'Tuin and three others of her species got covered in the ooze from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and we called it Ancient Mutant Star Ninja Turtles, would that make an awesome saturday morning cartoon or an amazing saturday morning cartoon?

Also, what would happen to the elephants and the disc's populations on their backs?

James did you knew that this is the thread page number 666? does that scare you a bit? does this number mean anything to you?

Next question, what happens when you start a high level campaign(lets say level 12) and you have an alchemist player that took the Mummification discovery(as his level 10 discovery), would you allow him to start with the immunities at level 12? or would you make him do the 30-day regimen when the adventure begins even tho he took it at has the level 10 discovery?

Mummification (EX)

The alchemist has mastered preserving flesh and applied this knowledge to his own body, turning himself into an undead-like creature. After learning this discovery, the alchemist must perform a 30-day regimen of a special diet, rigorous exercise, and drinking a mildly poisonous alchemical tea. At the end of this regimen, he falls unconscious for 24 hours, then awakens as a “living mummy.” The alchemist’s type does not change, but he becomes immune to cold, nonlethal damage, paralysis, and sleep.

James,

You mentioned you've not played an inquisitor before. What other core/base classes have you never played since PF was published?

James can you delay when under the effects of hold person or do you have to save each round? I ask because it has come up and the text in the spell states you can't take any actions but you may attempt a save. Which says to me you could opt not to do it and delay. Is not taking an action considered an action?
