Seriously, as much as I dislike swords, I have to admit that's an awesome racial trait.

At this point, yes. Tengu is it.

Does Weapon Finesse work with any newer weapons? It was in the Core Rulebook, and the other books introduce weapons that would probably work with it.

It varies. I don't want to say TOO much about how nations pay their troops, since I'm not ready and don't have rules to build off of... but they (and other nations) would keep their troops via a combination of money, pride, patriotisim, fear, religion, promises, guilt, favors, magic, insurance, and more. Same as in this world.

Which nations in this world keep their troops by magic? I'd like to look into moving there.

Unless the weapon says so in its description, as in the case of the rapier, nope. If it's a light weapon, then yes.

Unrevealed.

So I guess there are no finessable Eastern weapons, then?

Aside from the obvious light weapons, that is.

It was the Sherlock Holmes adventure in the original boxed set for Cthulhu by Gaslight, but the campaign itself was a mix of published ones and ones I wrote. The biggest 2 elements I wrote were one where the PCs gain control of John Dee's house and have to explore/exorcise it as part of their duties after joining the Knights Templar, and the other one was an expedition to Everest where the PCs had to foil a mi-go plot. I had a giant stack of photos and stuff as handouts for that one to help the players imagine the scenery.

James, how do you feel about being called Jim?

Also, I've been looking at the firearms rules in Ultimate Combat. With the "Guns Everywhere" option it says that firearms become simple weapons. Does this apply only/primarily to advanced firearms, or to all?
What about the classes that don't get simple weapons proficiency (druid, monk, wizard), should I add some firearms to their list of weapon skills? It makes sense to me that a wizard could carry a revolver (Murlynd from Greyhawk...), but what about the other two?
Are there any classes that do have simple weapons proficiency that shouldn't have access to some or all firearms?

Lastly, what changes should I make when running a common gun game to reflect the shift from melee focus to ranged?

Not a fan about being called Jim. I'm okay with very very few folks calling me that. They know who they are.

Since the likelihood of me knowing you personally approaches nil, I'll go by custom courtesy one should extend to an adult and professional and stick with Mr. Jacobs.

James,

I know Taldor isn't one of your favourite nations, but I figured I might as well ask this and see what your own view is. So, the army of Qadira is noted at clocking in at 100,000+, which can be further swelled by conscripts and slaves. The shtick of the Taldan army is noted as being underfunded, but still impressive, and further potent enough to hold its borders. Certainly they've at least been powerful enough to have discouraged a Qadiran invasion to this point.

How big an army do you figure that would have to be to be managing that, as far as the hosts of Taldor?

Without a super-robust set of rules for mass combat, and without an extensive gaming background in mass-combat wargames, I can't really answer that question. At this point, the answer is merely, "As big as it needs to be but not one soldier more."

Ah well, was worth asking as far as some campaign work I'm trying to do. Appreciate getting a response regardless.

Hello James, if I use Polypurpose Panacea with Touch injection to an opponent do I get to choose the effect?
Not sure where you're getting those rules from; please cite sources if you're not quoting something from the core, since I don't have all our books memorized...

Spell: Polypurpose Panacea: source Ultimate Magic

School transmutation; Level alchemist 1, sorcerer/wizard 1
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components S
Range personal
Target you
Duration see below

This creates one of several cantrip-level effects relating to your health, well-being, and entertainment. The panacea has no side effects (for example, the intoxication panacea does not cause a hangover). When you use polypurpose panacea, choose one of the following effects.

Analgesic: You do not feel minor aches and pains, such as from arthritis, a cold, or a hangover, for 1 hour. For the duration, you gain a +2 resistance bonus against pain-related spells.

Clarity: You get a +1 competence bonus on a single attack roll, saving throw, or skill check within 1 minute. You must choose to use the bonus before making the roll to which it applies.

Hallucination: You have pleasant hallucinations for 1 hour, such as wandering lights, music, playful surreal animals, and so on. You can tell these are not real, but they are distracting, and you take a –2 penalty on Perception checks for the duration.

Intoxication: You feel comfortably intoxicated for 1 hour, as if you had a few alcoholic beverages.

Lucid Dream: If you take this panacea within 1 hour of going to sleep, you have a lucid dream that is under your control and lasts for an hour.

Resistance: You gain a +1 resistance bonus on saves for 1 minute.

Sleep: You enter a pleasant and restful sleep for at least 1 hour unless wakened. If you would normally begin sleeping at this time, when the panacea ends you continue sleeping normally.

Sobriety: You become completely sober for 1 hour, negating any penalties to your actions for being drunk (GameMastery Guide 237). Magical and alchemical methods (such as detect poison) still detect you as inebriated. Time spent under the effect of this panacea do not count toward the time necessary to sober up (it merely delays your intoxication).

Tenacity: You gain 1 temporary hit point for 1 minute.

Wakefulness: You remain awake for 2 hours without feeling sleepy, and without side effects such as jitteriness. You gain a +5 resistance bonus against sleep-related spells such as lullaby and sleep. This use of the panacea merely delays your need for sleep and does not count as rest or sleep. You can use it multiple times in succession, but as each effect wears off, you are as tired as you would be had you not used the panacea.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Spell: Touch Injection: Ultimate Combat
School transmutation; Level alchemist 2, sorcerer/wizard 3
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S
Range personal
Duration 1 hour/level
Saving Throw none; Spell Resistance no

You must hold an elixir, infused extract, poison, or potion in hand as you cast this spell. The held substance drains from its container into a magical sac in your body. While the spell lasts, you can deliver the substance with a mere touch. To do so to an opponent, you must make a successful melee touch attack. If you hit, the substance takes effect immediately, despite any onset period, and that opponent receives the normal saving throw (if any) against the substance. If you miss, the substance remains in the magical sac for you to use later.

This spell protects you from poison in the sac, but unless you have the poison use class feature, you suffer a 5% chance of exposing yourself to the poison when you first cast the spell. If you roll a natural 1 while attempting to inject the poison into an enemy, you are exposed to it.

My question is, can I use Touch Injection to cast Polypurpose Panacea on an enemy and choose the effect of ''Sleep''?

In Undead Revisited, the look at the Nightshades seems to paint them as essentially the boogeymen of the multiverse, insofar as they are extraordinarily powerful, extraordinarily deadly, and even the most powerful necromancers and liches are wary of summoning them, "composed of equal parts utter darkness and ineffable evil" (from fiends who fall into the gulf and come back as Nightshades, overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of what they find). Considering that the lowest CR is 14 (with Nightwalkers at 16 who are "responsible for the deaths of worlds" and Nightwaves at 20, and rumours of even greater and deadlier forces deeper further in that could drain planets to a husk in mere weeks, forces godlike in their power), it certainly seems appropriate. There also seems to be a strong overtone that Nightshades are virtually the single most evil force out there, omnicidal maniacs to a level that equates them with things like Rovagug.

1) Are there any plans to expand on these creatures or give them some role in future PF material?

2) They seem like they're set up to be the enemy for high-level good parties, and Nightshades gather entire armies of undead. To this end, were they given the Mythic treatment? Or will they be, if they show up in Wrath of the Righteous? I could see Nocticula (in her link with shadows) involving herself with them.

3) Tar-Baphon seems to have made some use of them, especially since Nightshades populate dungeons of Gallowspire. Would even he be wary of calling on them too much or in too great a number?

(He's certainly among the most powerful individuals Golarion has ever seen, but playing around with creatures that unanimously wish to do nothing more than annihilate all of existence seems... well, a bit silly if you don't have to.)

4. Where they make their home is at the border between the Plane of Shadow and the Plane of Negative Energy, "where reality ends" as it is described. As one goes deeper into that rift... how would you describe it? Is it mostly purple prose, or is that really a place where reality literally, well, ends?

The better question here would be, can an Alchemist prepare a personal spell extract with the infusion discovery and pass it down to someone else so they drink it? Can my party get affected by my ''personal'' extract infusions if they drink it? I've seen it so many times that people in the forums usues ''personal'' spells(extracts) with the infusion discovery on their party ....

Infusion
Benefit: When the alchemist creates an extract, he can infuse it with an extra bit of his own magical power. The extract created now persists even after the alchemist sets it down. As long as the extract exists, it continues to occupy one of the alchemist’s daily extract slots. An infused extract can be imbibed by a non-alchemist to gain its effects.

By sheer coincidence, you have a party based on 4 famous classic authors. Which authors would they be, what classes would they be, and why each particular author?

Clark Ashton Smith (cleric): To take care of the bleeding and dealing with the undead.

George R. R. Martin (rogue): To take care of the stabbings.

1) Not specific plans, no. We've covered a fair amount about them in Undead Revisited. I quite like them, so I'm sure we'll do more with them some day.

2) Nope; they're not mythic foes, nor do we plan to make them mythic. One of the things that makes mythic MYTHIC is that it's special and not everywhere. There will probably be some of them in Wrath of the Righteous.

3) Tar-baphon is pretty tough; he can handle a bunch of nightshades, since many of thier best attacks don't mean much to him.

4) Negative energy is antilife. The plane of shadow is entropy. Mix those two together and you get pretty close to where reality ends.

Just how strong is Tar-Baphon? He sounds like the less subtle cousin of Vecna, minus the whole divinity shtick.

Just for a quick clarification, I was partially also referring to the rumours of how there are "godlike" Nightshades dwelling somewhere in that border rift. So it's not that they don't exist, just that they don't (or may not, depending on just what is out there) necessarily have Mythic tiers in hypothetical statblocks?

Why are the behemoths so similar to Tarrasques? Immune to everything but epic attacks, giving Pharasma the middle finger, and being immortal aside from wishes and miracles.

Are the behemoths related to Curchanus?

It would be an interesting twist to have the behemoths as children of Curchanus while Tarrasque and his siblings are Rovagug's kids.

Can Awaken be cast on vermin and magical beasts? I fear the day someone Awakens a tarrasque or behemoth...

Dear Magnanimous King Tyrant Lizard,

I'd like to know how you would handle this as a GM.

Regarding Rise of the Runelords:

Spoiler:

My players are quickly approaching the showdown with Karzoug. They're all quite rules savvy and have built a party around supporting the Arcane Archer (DPR 250+). The Wizard (Diviner) in the party has struck upon the idea of True Seeing + Greater Invisibility + Mindblank on the entire party for the final fight. I'm pretty sure this turns the final showdown against one of the most powerful wizards of the age into shooting fish in a barrel.

What would you do?

Thanks!

The mention of "godlike" Nightshades is likely referring to actual nightshade demigods, which would be CR 26 to CR 30. While they might have some mythic powers and the PCs will need to be mythic to have a chance against them, they aren't technically themeslves mythic foes in the way PCs and Monsters become mythic. It's kinda complicated to talk about before "Mythic Adventures" is out...

Basically... not every CR 26 and higher monster has mythic tiers.

I've been watching E3 news now and then. I will be buying an Xbox One and a PS4, and at this point it looks like my console of choice might shift from Microsoft to Sony. What'll really make that call is the quality and type of games each system gets. Not interested in Nintendo; I bought a Wii and played it about 4 times before losing interest.

I would spend the sessions leading up to the final encounter testing different tactics against the PCs, then use the best one against them in the final encounter. I would also alter the final encounter as needed to make the final battle memorable—but I wouldn't take it as a challenge to TPK the party. If the players have built a great team, they should feel like the final encounter is tough such that if they HADN'T been such a badass team it would have been grim.

Consider adding some more monsters though, and using effects that slow or stagger the party and/or punish them hard if they don't stay mobile. Take away the full attack action and things get MUCH more manageable.

If the whole party has built themselves to support the damage dealing archer, Karzoug should know that and should take steps to fix it. There are lots of ways to stop an archer. At the very least, Karzoug has wish prepared twice and two time stops so he can "pause" and regroup. He's also got see invisibility, so greater invisibility won't bother him... and it won't really bother his dragon friend either, but if he's really concerned about the invisibility, he can just use wish or limited wish to cast unhallow on his lair and link an invisibility purge to it (he should do this before the final battle, of course, so he has all his wishes available in that last fight.)

What do you think would be the most hilariously awesome class for an awakened familiar to take 20 levels in? I'd say a bat sorcerer, arcane bloodline. (Begs the question of what such a creature's familiar would be)

Silver Crusade

If a paladin decides to take a mount as his Divine Bond choice, where does the mount come from? Can (or must) he acquire a reqular steed and use it, or is it sent by his deity, manifested from the positive energy plane or something completly different?

And (okay, this might be more of a rules question) from how far away can the paladin summon his mount?

Can Eldritch Heritage grant Wildblooded powers? If so, then any character with sufficient Charisma can have an animal companion at Lv3.

Summoner.

Wait... you said hilariously awesome, not just hilarious.

For hilariously awesome, I'd go with any full spellcasting class, since that plays the most to their strengths as a tiny creature.

But also... familiars can't take class levels or be awakened, so it's a moot point, really.

Mr Jacobs,

Did you have any part in designing Triaxians as a playable race?

If so, in the event that there was another expanded race guide that included them would you have the Ukara/Battleflower as a Monk racial archetype or prestige class?

What happens to a familiar when a wizard dismisses it? Does it turn back into an animal or does it keep its stats? Same question for animal companions.
