What is the strangest character you or your players have come up with?
My strangest character: Torak, the winged awakened deinonychus ranger.

Have you played many monsters?

What do you think about reverse campaigns where the characters are Orcs, Goblinoids or Kobolds?

What monsters do you think would fit into a normal campaign with the least shoehorning?

I did not vote. I am a bad, bad person.

Voting is compulsory in Australia - You get fined if you don't have a good excuse.

My dear old dad used to say if you don't vote you waive your right to complain.

The fact that I don't get fined if I don't vote, ironically, makes me feel pretty patriotic.

In my defense, I did just move and my whole registration situation is kind of topsy-turvy, so I actually wasn't sure WHERE I needed to go to vote. I've been putting off getting my Driver's License address/voting registration updated, since the Department of Motor Vehicles is such a horrendous time sink (haven't really had a half-day to spare since moving, really, save for on Sundays, when the DMV ain't open anyhow).

And furthermore... I really don't know all that much about most of the voting issues at hand. I'd rather not vote than accidentally vote for some sort of mad deforestation scheme or something like that.

Anyway... I'll still complain if the government screws something up.

What would be the starting racial stat mods for a Pseudodragon PC?

How do we work this stuff out?

Subtract 10 or 11 from the Pseudodragon's ability scores (10 if the stat is even, 11 if it's odd). The results are its ability score mods. You can do the same thing to arrive at ability score mods for any monster.

Do you think one shot all one race or all one class games would be interesting?

ANY game can be interesting with the right mix of players, first of all.

And I've actually run some one-race games... usually all humans. They're quite fun.

A one-class game is interesting sounding as well; with only one class, you can really specialize the adventures quite well to tell some really neat stories. The campaign where everyone's a wizard apprentice in a wizard school is a lot easier to do if there's no fighters in the group.

The whole Jacobsian middle-ground thing seems to be working pretty well in N.I. right now.

Nope; that's what players get for asking Hellknights to tinker with their souls.

That said, if the player wants to restore his alignment, that's only an atonement spell away. Or, if the player's soured on paying for others to cast spells on him, an adventure hook away, I guess.

So I was thinking of having a cleric of Asmodeus appear in the middle of the night and appear only to the fighter for an opportunity. Basically give him a map, a ruby hilted dagger, and a small holy symbol of Asmodeus. The job is to follow the map to the end and kill the guy in the room at the end. Then place his body on the altar in the room driving the dagger through his heart and placing the holy symbol on his head. With that the contract will be fulfilled. Except the "room is a secret meeting place to Saranrae. The "guy" is an Azata and if he does kill the Azata and place the body on the altar with the dagger through it's heart and the holy symbol on it's forehead, it desecrates the temple and sets it on fire. What do you think too evil? I mean come on this is the Church of Asmodeus in Egorian we're talking about they'd make him do something this evil for his freedom.

Nothing is too evil, as long as there's a chance or choice to redeem the character. If the PC goes through with all this and is free of his contract, but this ends up making the fighter LE, allow him to somehow regain his former alignment, if he so chooses.

If on the other hand you set this up, the character does the "dirty deed" and becomes LE and you then laugh evily and refuse to earn back his old alignment and turn the PC into an NPC, that would be an evil, jerk DM move.

That really depends on the nature of the encounter, to be honest. As a general rule, CR 4 above the expected average party level (APL) is the most you want to go. But I've published adventures where there are encounters that could well be CR 12 above the expected APL; in those cases, though, a significant part of the adventure is about weakening that encounter BEFORE the PCs get to it. Basically, a high CR encounter can be mitigated by giving the PCs additional advantages.

Also, not all encounters are equally deadly to every group. A group of all clerics is going to BLAST through an encounter with a bunch of shadows, but a group of all rogues is probably going to get TPKd by it.

CR 4 above APL is generally the highest you'd want to go, though.

The giant robots in Numeria are more akin to things like linnorms or neothelids or froghemoths. They're scary menaces and legendary and all that, but they're hardly common enough to count as something that most folks will have to ever deal with.

    Heya again James,

A long while ago on this thread I said I'd offer you a spot in a PbP if I started one up, since you'd never officilly been asked before. Well I'm going to run RotRL here on the boards if possible and thought I'd better follow through on my promise.

So, if you are so inclined and have the time for one, would you be interested in trying out RotRL in PbP format? More specifically my RotRL PbP I guess, but there are some others running there as well so you have options.

The Darklands. Dinosaurs. Numeria. Asian Stuff. Epic content. Nautical stuff. Demons. Absalom. Nidal. Land of the Linnorm Kings. Druids. Lovecraftian stuff.

Some of these things are being addressed in current APs. Some are GOING to be addressed in upcoming APs. Some have probably been addressed enough already but I like them so much I want more. Some will probably NEVER be addressed. And I'm sure I left some out.

No probs James, just wnated to make sure you'd at least had the chance.

I do enjoy PbP, surprisingly so I must say.

A question I guess - Roleplay games have always been as much about grouping with friends as playing the game. With this in mind, how do you think Pathfinder would go translated into a computer based game (or other gaming platform I guess)?

If you did get this developed into computer games of some sort, how would you go about keeping the roleplay aspect of the game alive?

    Cheers

As well as or as bad as some of the D&D computer games, honestly. That gamut has run from the jaw-dropingly brilliant (Baldur's Gate II, Torment) to the jaw-droppingly horrible (Death Keep, that horrible Ravenloft fighting game).

The way to keep the roleplay aspect alive is to program in a lot of story elements in the form of a robust dialogue system with NPCs. Bioware and Bethesda do a great job with this in games like Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Fallout, to the extent that how you handle the dialouge options can open up quests, rewards, or even start combats or adjust your reputation. It works really quite well and is very fun.

    ArchAnjel wrote:

Not as much as I would have missed Greyhawk had I never had the chance to work on Greyhawk through Dragon and Dungeon or through my freelance work for WotC. I got to not only publish dozens of Greyhawk adventures in Dungeon, but got to write a huge amount of articles for Greyhawk in Dragon, and also got to work with Rob Kuntz several times on Maure Castle installments and, as a capstone, got to help write "Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk." In other words, I more than got my Greyhawk itch scratched.

I do miss being able to help build that world, but Golarion is a pretty solid replacement.

Whether or not there's actually plans for a 4E Greyhawk or not (I'll believe this more if I hear it directly from WotC). I'm not going to read that whole thread, but regardless of whether or not it's for real or (as I suspect) it's just satire... WotC owns Greyhawk. They're free to do what they want with it. The setting has already endured a LOT of unfortunate stuff and has survived, and it will continue to survive whatever else is thrown at it, I suspect (and hope).

James! Some tournament questions, if you would.

    1. Would it be a commonly held position among Hellknights that tourney's are frivolous things, or would some Hellknights participate in them?

    2. I can picture tourneys in Taldor, but how common would they be elsewhere, like, for example, Andoran or Cheliax?

    3. Would there be any such thing as a "neutral ground" tourney where it would be likely to see an Andoran Eagle Knight, a Hellknight, and a Taldan knight all competing?

1: That'd depend on the Hellknight's order. Those orders are pretty varied in their likes and dislikes. That said, the opportunity to show off Hellknight combat superiority in public is always welcome.

2: Tournaments of the like we detail in Kingmaker #35, with jousting and archery and that are pretty common anywhere and everywhere. Actual gladiator bloodsport type battles though are not common in Andoran. They're VERY common in Cheliax.

3: Absalom's a pretty good candidate for "neutral ground."

    Excellent James, thanks.

I was thinking Absalom, though I can imagine centaurs breaking up a shipment of horses showing up for the tourney, which might actually be an interesting sidequest.
