Frankly, I think that the whole idea that "entertainment about violence causes humans to become violent" is a load of bunk and nonsense, and that it's a defense used often by politicians and reporters eager to get attention by crusading while not having the bravery to admit the real problem lies in basic human nature.

That, and often the policies set by the politicians themselves. For example, many of the school shootings that happen are performed by people with disabilities because of the educational concept of scaffolding. Basically, as children we give people with disabilities worlds of support, but the minute they turn 21 they either lose this support or are unaware of adult services as this support is squirreled away behind massive legal barriers. Much of the shocking violence that happens in such situations is a direct result of the staggering levels of frustration and helplessness those people feel.

Non-mainstream media and entertainment, such as video games and roleplaying games, are an easy scapegoat in these cases because the media can count on the majority of people having little to no firsthand experience regarding them.

BUT NO MORE POLITICS IN THE JAMES JACOBS THREAD! :-P

Question; if you're allowed to disclose it, what's the reason behind removing the Lantern Lodge? I personally thought it was an excellent way to justify a Tian Xia race within Pathfinder Society.

She's about 6 feet tall.

You're lucky you mispelled "weigh" because that's the only way you can survive that question without her crushing you.

Her "official" hair, eye, and skin color are what you see in the art of her. Aka: Black, brown, and pink.

It's for a home game. My GF loves the Iconic Amiri, and wants to play her in upcoming game.

Knowing Weight and Height is for completing her vitals.

This will be my GF's first game.

That's more a question for Mark and Mike... but I believe the basic problem is that 10 factions turned out to be too many, and we need to cull some to get things back in a manageable state again.

And just because they're being removed doesn't mean that Tian Xia is cutting ties. They're not. They're still there. You can still have characters from Tian Xia.

ok James, Fast Learner human feat:

i can pick an Hp and a skill point each level instead one of them...
can i get a variant for this feat? i mean, maybe a spell in the wizard spellbook and hp or how this feat really works?

other question: Im playing a Magus, then at level 4th can i take a favored class arcane pool point or do i need to take that trait four times before i can get one arcane pool point?

example:
Human Favored magus
level class option
1-3 1skillpoint
4 1arcane pool
5-7 1skillpoint
8 1arcane pool
9-11 1skillpoint
12 1arcane pool
13-15 1manapoint
16 1hp+1arcane pool
17-19 1manapoint
20 1manapoint

One more question about alignment.

If you were in a room full of murder suspects (all of at least 5th level) and you cast "Know Alignment" or even just "Detect Evil", would you expect that spell to "give the game away"?

Is that the purpose of these spells?

Or would you expect the spell to give you more of a clue - perhaps indicate to you the most likely 50% - because of the way alignment works (i.e. frequently the evil guy wont be the murderer, or you will find there's actually quite a lot of evil guys in that room because it's not that uncommon)

From my previous question, what is your least favorite in each category? For me...

1) Nagaji (where are my lizardfolk?)

2) Cavalier (it just seems so pointless)

3) Prestidigitation (Why?)

4) Shillelagh (not that helpful)

5) Imrijka

6) Brownie (it's trying to be cute, but it's so CREEPY O_O)

7) Longsword (swords are overrated)

8) Heavy Crossbow (kinda useless)

Skipping 9, since you did.

10) Erastil (he's kind of a jerk)

A couple of questions about Absalom, Aroden and the Deck of Many Things:

1) If a noble title is "inherited" from a Harrow Deck via the Empty Throne card, could it allow somebody to gain a title in Absalom? Since the Guide to Absalom states that there aren't really any inherited titles (except for things like Primarch-in-waiting) and titles are handed out to those who deserve them, would the Deck's magic do that instead of a noble title?

2) Or would it just not allow the user to gain a title in Absalom, and pick somewhere else instead?

3) If it could select Absalom, what sort of titles might be granted? Scion, perhaps?

4) As the first question, but with Ilizmagorti. As an island that seems dominated by the Red Mantis, is there any sort of inherited nobility to be found here?

5) As the third question - what sort of title would Ilizmagorti grant, or would it simply not work at all and the title come from somewhere else?

6) Of the warriors who win gold pins at the Irorium in Absalom, what would you say their level ranges are on average? Are there any notable stand-outs?

7) After Aroden established the location of Absalom when he placed the Starstone, the Guide to Absalom says that this took a very heavy toll on him. Was Aroden a full deity when he lifted the Starstone, or just a very powerful demigod? If it was the former, then since it took such a toll on him it would set a barometre for how powerful he was at the time.

Bard master! Did you intend for multiple bardic performances to be able to be started and stopped in the same round? Say stopping inspire courage, starting dirge of doom as a move action, casting a spell and then canceling dirge to start inspire courage as a swift action? Or were you not involved with that aspect of the bard?

Do you think if there was PF2, you guys would focus even less in the musical aspect of bards and more on manipulation?

With the design team starting to publish their own 3pp, do you plan on doing so too?

Know alignment and detect evil are tools, not excuses. In the aforementioned situation, using a spell like this in a crowd of murder suspects can help you to narrow down those suspects, but it can also lead you astray. One murder is unlikely to be enough to instantly turn you evil, so if a good guy did it, he'd get away with it if you merely went with the spell results. Use of such spells is nothing more than one of several tools the investigating PC has at her disposal, but the THOROUGH investigator doesn't stop at just one spell. Because the typical GM will suspect you'll be using this tactic and will throw you some curve balls.

1) In the right circumstances, yes, yo can gain a title in Absalom with the Harrow Deck. The Guide to Absalom has a bit too much hyperbole in it...

2) I'd absolutely allow someone to gain a noble title in Absalom. With or without the card, depending on circumstances.

3) Up to the GM. Absalom's an enormous mixing pot of a city, and there's all sorts of cultures in there.

4) There's an aristocracy in Ilizmagorti, for sure, which is about the same thing. Getting a government-granted noble title would likely require you to be a member of the Red Mantis. Using a card to gain the title would be like getting the title via a loophole—the Red Mantis is a lawful society, remember, and they'd abide by this loophole, but who knows how long it would be before you had an accident?

5) Lord/Lady for the most part.

6) Going with the level guidelines in Inner Sea World Guide (page 253) I'd say that the most of them are 6th to 10th level, but that there could be some true standouts of 11th to 15th level. The only reason there'd be an NPC above 15th there would be if you needed an NPC to oppose/challenge a high level party.

7) Aroden's act of raising the Starstone is probably what made him a full-on deity. He was already mythic at that point, in any event. What exactly "heavy toll" means is unrevealed as of yet.

We haven't nailed that down, but I'd probably say 4707 AR to sync it up with the point at which we launched Pathfinder. She would have been about 16 at that point, which makes her 22 now. Maybe. Again... I reserve the right to adjust those numbers in the future, but they're close.

I wanted to eventually write entries for all of the demon lords. In particular Obox-ob. I was holding off on doing that one so I could build up some anticipation for him, since I invented him, but alas... I morbidly mis-calculated and mis-timed that.

But yeah. I wanted eventually to do articles on every single demon lord ever mentioned by name in the game. Ah well. I had a great run at it, and I'm pretty honored that they're still doing articles in the series (as far as I can tell), although I've not read any of them.

As long as you have the actions to do so, yes, you can start and stop new performances as often as you want. Each time you activate one, though, it uses up a daily use of the ability, remember, so make sure not to run out before you want!

Bards are about performance, and music is a huge part of that. We'd likely try to make it a bit more clear that just as not every cleric has to be a healer and not every wizard needs to cast fireballs and not every fighter needs to use longswords that not every bard needs to be a musician... but we'd absolutely keep music as a big part of the bard's themes.

I've been working on my own apocalyptic game, Unspeakable Futures, for over a decade. I'd LOVE to get it out there. At the same time, though... essentially going into competition with my employer unsettles and disturbs me a little bit, so I'd be much more likely to polish up Unspeakable Futures and then try to get Paizo to produce it. We'll see.

If among your deeds you regularly force intelligent creatures to live a lifestyle of your design and force them to breed with people you select and aren't afraid of breaking up and mixing up families so you can produce a "perfect race," then there's no way that I'll ever let you get published with ANY good alignment.

I know you wrote that a month ago but wait, wait, wait. Seriously? Don't all those people in Promise volunteer to go and know what they are getting into? If you tell me to punch you and I punch I'm not evil. Not even violent. Just helpful.

I don't think you can say, "Mengkare is evil" because he's doing something that would only be evil if he wasn't doing it with their permission. Has Sutter even gone into enough detail about Hermea to know that they have traditional family structures? I kind of imagined all the kids being given over to experts in early child development so that their parents could focus on whatever is was that made them worthy of going to Hermea in the first place.

Maybe I'm just remembering a lot more the stuff from the Campaign Setting than the ISWG but I don't see Hermea or Mengkare as evil at all. Maybe slightly crazy but not evil.

Fair enough... but remember, if you ALWAYS throw curve balls, they're nothing special and no one notices. You have to pitch straight now and then for the curve balls to have any effect.

There can certainly be overlap... but you'd need your GM's permission for double-dipping into the unusual familiar barrel.

Hello James!

A few more questions, if you don't mind:

According to the Inner Sea Wolrd Guide, some oracles in Golarion can "eschew the worship of deities completely, instead venerating philosophies or other less tangible objects of devotion".

1)That being the case, can oracles lose their divine powers if they violate the ethics/principles of their philosophies??

1a) Can oracles change "gods" like Clerics do (effectively changing the object of their veneration)??

1b) In case of yes, what happens if their current mystery doesn't match well with the new philosophy?

Misc. questions

2) In the context of the new mythic rules, is it possible for a character to advance a base class level beyond level 20 (e.g. wizards 23 as opposed to wizard 20/mythic 3)?

3)Would the opposition research arcane discovery (from Ultimate Magic, page 86) work for a Thassilonian specialist wizard? In other words, could that arcane discovery be used to cast spells from an opposing Thassilonian school?

4) Had Xanderghul met Aroden, what would they have thought of each other?

Something for an ongoing Skull & Shackles campaign, I suppose (what with Kerdak Bonefist wanting a larger foothold on Mediogalti - it could make for a useful adventure, either before or after the main campaign).

With reference to the Red Mantis, Inner Sea Magic refers to Jakalyn, their current leader, as a Cleric 9 / Red Mantis Assassion 10+. Does the plus sign mark her as a mythic character?

If so, how mythic would you put her in terms of tiers? If that's too specific, then just "low" or "medium" or "high" rank is fine.

Correct. The blood mistress is something more than a 20th level character. She could be mythic... could have some templates... could even not actually be human at all. She's above CR 20 is all that "+" really means.

Interesting. Is there any chance of this happening in the near-future? Or mid-future? Or is it just something you have on the back burner and don't foresee pulling off it any time soon?

The Exchange

What are the odds of seeing an AP focusing on a outer plane as it's main local?
For example, in the "Jade Regent" campaign, the first half is about getting to Tian Xia, and the second is all about that place. So could a resembling plot structure using an outer plan be used anywhere in the near future (say, next 5 or 6 APs)? I know "Wrath of the Righteous" will have large parts set in the Abyss, but I was hoping for a less explored plane.

If so, what are the chances of getting an elemental plane campaign?

Maybe. Maybe not. I've certainly wanted to do a big "Against the Red Mantis" AP or mega-adventure for a while... but it's something I want to write, so that means it's competing with all the other things I want to write.

The odds are 100%.

Spoiler:
Wrath of the Righteous spends almost but not quite half of its page count on the Abyss. It's probably closer to about 40% of its page count on the Abyss.

Beyond Wrath of the Righteous, we'll certainly be looking at doing planar stuff as well.

Speaking of her possibly not being human - am I wrong in thinking that there seems to be a disproportionate amount of elves in the Red Mantis?

You're not wrong. But she's not an elf. If she's not human... she's gonna be something a lot more exotic than a humanoid.

What is the Golarion year when the Shattered Star ends?

Depends entirely on how long your players take to finish the campaign. We make zero assumptions.

James, since you have a fancy globe of Golarion, which Inner Sea and Tian Xia countries does the equator run through?

The cactus on Katapesh's symbol is the source of pesh? And why does Katapesh capital put off a strong desert vibe even though the Inner Sea Region map shows the land around it dark green, situated on a river, and on the shore of the Obari Ocean? What is the name of the bay the capital is situated in?

If by "fancy" you mean a 3 dollar blue beachball with rough continent outlines drawn in ink that smudges if you mis-handle it...

The Equator runs more or less right through Nagajor in Tian Xia. It doesn't touch the Inner Sea region at all... it's a few hundred miles south of the bottom edge of the Inner Sea region map. (The Inner Sea region is about 1/5 the size of Tian Xia.)

Pesh is indeed a type of cactus. Katapesh itself is part desert, part savannah. I don't recall off the top of my head what the capital's bay is called, but if we HAVE mentioned it... it's either in Pathfinder #21 or Dark Markets.

As a familiar-owning character, what determines how many feats your familiar has?

The familiar's racial HD before it became a familiar and started using your HD for effects. A familiar does not generally gain feats as you get more powerful, since it doesn't actually gain real HD. With your GM's permission, you could, I suppose, take Leadership or otherwise finagle a deal for your familiar to gain class levels or racial HD and thus gain feats... but familiars are not intended to work similarly to animal companions, which DO gain feats.

If/when a 3pp does an in depth book on the abyss would you be interested in helping out?

Nope. If I'm gonna be writing about the Abyss, I'd rather do that writing for Paizo. And I'm doing that right now and have already.

Writing for a 3PP would not allow me to use the Golarion demon lords or the Golarion Abyssal realms either, which would frustrate me greatly. I've already had to reset/restart my work on demons and the Abyss once. I'm not eager to do that a 3rd time.

That said, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see a 3PP do more demon/Abyss stuff.

Liberty's Edge

1. What do you think of the design changes made to the Thought Eater in 3rd edition and the fact that those changes were kept in Dreamscarred Press' Psionics rules? I mean, there are some people who think the old design actually looked better in a Boschian "pathetic-yet-creepy" way.

2. Of those fan Thought Eater designs in the article I linked to, which do you think is best?

3. What do you think of the Wingless Wonder/Alkada?

4. Are there any creatures from the L. Frank Baum books in the Oz series that you'd like to add to Pathfinder?

5. Would you be okay with WotC using any of Pathfinder's open content monsters in D&D Next?

6. If the answer to 5 is yes, which ones do you think would best fill some iconic niches that their creatures lack?

7. I know you can't say this in the books because people would riot, but does the Christian god exist in the Pathfinder-verse, or is he absent ala the Cthulhu Mythos? Or is he the brother Asmodeus stabbity-stab-stabbed at the beginning of creation?
