So, there's a trait in the advanced player's guide, adopted, it allows you to grab a racial trait from another race. How does that interact with alternate racial traits and bonus feats?

Mindful of the statement that traits are sort of half feats, I limited adopted to racial traits that don't give feats and alternate racial traits which only replace single racial traits. But i want to know your stance on the trait.

On a less rules oriented note, are there any fortune telling methods native to Tian-xia the same way Harriet is native to Avistan?

Don't bother. It's a clumsy attempt to fuse Gordon Dickson's novel "The Dragon and the George" with Peter Dickinson's speculative artbook "The Flight of Dragons."

It's pretty, but it's dumb.

It doesn't at all.

There's a difference between "race traits" and "racial traits." Adopted only lets you swap out for another race's race traits, as listed mostly in the Advanced Player's Guide and now an then in various Player's Companions. It does NOT let you touch racial traits, like a dwarf's stonecunning, a human's extra feat, or a tengu's gifted linguistics.

HA! "Harriet." Weird typo.

There are some fortune telling methods native to Tian Xia but we haven't really delved into that realm yet.

I'm planning to run Age of Worms AP in the near future. Do you have any suggestions as to where to place it in Golarion?

Liberty's Edge

To continue my question regarding the conversion of Second Darkness, when converting allied NPCs, would you suggest increasing their level as well to maintain an equivalent CR (even though they aren't expected to be fighting against PCs for XP)? I guess for comparison, what did you do for Shalelu for RotRL: did you bump her level, or keep it the same as the original?

Thanks again.

Mistaking the behavior of 4 player characters as being indicative of the average person in Golarion is an error.

Where were these alternative poison rules located?

Character Question if you don't mind...

How would Ameiko react (Based off your understanding of her and assuming the DM is trying to keep cannon stuff in mind) to finding out that the man she is developing romantic feelings for is a Black Blooded, Planar Oracle associated with the Abyss and has the Outer Rifts Mystery?

Not really a question, but god bless you for this. Toy Story 3 was 'meh' at best. Of course, I'm also a little bitter that it beat How to Train Your Dragon for the Oscar.

And Lion King is a generational thing, I suppose, but I never cared for the movie and got very tired of the hype. Oh, the hype! What other Disney movie was so hyped as to warrant a 3D re-release 17 years after its first theatrical run?

I'm still trying to figure out where you got that quote from; I'm curious to see the question that JJ is commenting. Can you PM it to me, Cheapy?

Personally, I just turned down a Summoner one-shot PC because there are many things I do not like about the class (too many to list here, as a matter of fact!) and I wanted to see if any of my musings jived with the conversation.

What is your favorite 3.0 or 3.5 publication besides the core rulebooks and why? Are there any you still use for PFRPG games on a regular basis?

Are you familiar with the 3.0 Hero Builder's Guide (my favorite 3.0 supplement by a wide margin and the only one I still use for Pathfinder)? What is the likelihood of Paizo publishing something along those lines in the future?

This will obviously never show up in any game I run, nor would any sane GM allow this, but I was wondering if this is correct.

Creating Wondrous Items wrote:
If spells are involved in the prerequisites for making the item, the creator must have prepared the spells to be cast (or must know the spells, in the case of a sorcerer or bard) but need not provide any material components or focuses the spells require.

Unlike all other items, you must provide the material and focus for the spells cast. I noticed this because I was attempting to make communication mirrors like from Harry Potter, and I read the superscript in the Estimating Magic Item Gold Piece Value table.

Spell has Material Component Cost wrote:

Add directly into price of item per charge 4

4 If item is continuous or unlimited, not charged, determine cost as if it had 100 charges. If it has some daily limit, determine as if it had 50 charges.

I didn't know if Focuses were included under the Material descriptor, so I started looking under the rules for creating of each type of item when I notice the previously mentioned Wondrous Item bit.

When I read the bit about Wondrous Items not needing material components, it occurred to me, that (at the most extreme) spells like Wish become amazing Command Word items. A Command Word Headband, would cost 275,400 gp, but you gain an infinite number of Wishes.

Like I said, no sane GM would allow such a Headband, but it was the most extreme version that occurred to me. I wondered, if this is true, or if one should actually multiply the material component cost?

Well... one of the great things to me about Age of Worms is the fact that it plays with so many established Greyhawk bits. In other words... I'd run it set in Greyhawk, not Golarion.

I went through all of this, actually, when I updated the Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path. And there's no one real answer—in some cases I raised their level. In others I didn't. Depended on the situation.

For Shalelu, since she's statted up already for Jade Regent, I just used her stats from that.

APG has some feats and stuff, I believe, that make crafting poison less onerous.

She'd probably feel betrayed and depressed to find out someone she was starting to feel attached to turned out to be involved with the Abyss, and there'd need to be some soul searching on her part AND on the PC's part as to what's more important.

I'm pretty familiar with all the 3.0 and most of the 3.5 books (save for a few at the tail end of 3.5). I actually helped write a lot of them, in fact.

Well... the most important thing to keep in mind is that those item pricing formulas are only STARTING points. Once you use those formulas to generate a new item's price, you really do have to compare that price to similar items (preferably from the Core Rulebook, where the prices are pretty solid) to make sure that your price is in the ballpark and not way too high or way too low. And then, if you're not the GM, the final step is to get the GM to approve the price.

Sometimes... items are just TOO GOOD according to the formulas.

What would be the best way to use the Ghostwalk rules in The Pathfinder Campaign Setting?

Dear James,

Thanks for fielding our questions. Was hoping I could get your opinion on a couple of matters that have come up in my game.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
1. The Pathfinder Savant's Esoteric Magic ability has this line:

"At each class level beyond 1st, the Pathfinder savant chooses a spell from any class’s spell list and thereafter treats it as if it were on the spell list of his base spellcasting classes; if his base class could not normally cast that spell, it is treated as 1 level higher."

What happens if he picks a spell that is already on his list, but is a lower level spell on another list, e.g. a PS wizard picking heroism. Would heroism then become a 2nd level spell for the wizard?

---------------------------------------------------------------------
2. The half-elf "Elf Blood" racial trait reads:
"Half-elves count as both elves and humans for any effect related to race."

The racial heritage feat for humans has a similar line, but comes with an example:
"Choose another humanoid race. You count as both human and that race for any effects related to race. For example, if you choose dwarf, you are considered both a human and a dwarf for the purpose of taking traits, feats, how spells and magic items affect you, and so on."

Would you take this as illustrative of what the Elf Blood racial trait does for half-evles? Does the half-elf count as a human and elf for the purpose of taking feats and traits? What other purposes do you reckon a half-elf should count as an elf and a human for?

---------------------------------------------------------------------
3. My player was considering picking up a dinosaur animal companion. Where on Golarion would he need to go to find one? Where on Golarion are dinosaurs most prevalent? I was under the impression that Sargava was the place, but I can't seem to find the source for this impression. Are some dinosaurs more prevalent in some parts of Golarion, and some more common in other parts?

I'd also ask if you'd recommend a T-rex or Ankylosaur, but I think I already know your answer to that one. ;)

Well, a lot of 3rd Edition products had really godawful artwork. I try not to hold that against them. With a few exceptions, the only good art in 3e books was by Reynolds or Lockwood in my opinion. Speaking of which, does Lockwood not do RPG art anymore? Any chance of us seeing some of his work in the pages or on the cover of Pathfinder stuff?

1) If a spell is on his spell list, and he picks the same spell from a different spell list, that spell translates over to him at +1 level from that second spell list, because while it's the same spell, it's not a version of the spell he can normally cast (wizards can't cast bard spells, for example).

2) A half elf counts as a human and an elf for everything. Including which traits and feats he qualifies for.

3) Dinosaurs can be found all over on Golarion... but for the most part they exist in the wild in western Garund (The Shackles, Mediogalti, The Sodden Lands, Sargava, and the Mwangi Expanse). They can also be found in the northern Darklands near Deep Tolguth. And they can be found elsewhere, usually because they've been transported there for zoos or as pets or guards. And my favorite dinosaur animal companion is actually a deinonychus, since that way they can fit into areas you're going.

I disagree; I quite liked most of 3rd edition's artwork. There were a few artists whose styles rubbed me the wrong way is all.

Lockwood more or less priced himself out of the RPG industry—he became too successful, and now we can't really afford him anymore, more or less. At least, that's my understanding.

They're the only three that anyone remembers. There may have been more who were forgotten, but that's unlikely. It'd be hard to be a forgotten god if you went in a mortal and came out a god in the center of the largest city on the planet. So... Yeah. Them three is it.

No one that has tried it was aiming to be the "hidden god", good of secrets and obscure things?

Guys aiming to those portfolio could not make know that they have passed the test and instead search for followers claiming that they are forgotten Atzlan gods or foreign gods. As, in Golarion, the god power isn't linked to the number of follower he has, I can see some god trying to get only selected followers, contacting them by dreams and omens, without establishing a organized clerical hierarchy.

Not having to provide 100 live spiders is different from having to pay for 100x 10.000 gp diamonds for a item capable to cast unlimited resurrections or 2.500.000 gp for a item of unlimited wishes.

James, a question: the cost of the material component influence the creation time for an item?
I.e. a scroll of resurrection will require 3 days to be made (as a 2,275 gp item) and 12.275 gp, or it will require 13 days to be made?

I'd go with the longer time, since that's how much it actually costs, and since that makes it harder and more significant to make those powerful items.

Yes. Because that name has about 30 years of canon in my head, being the god of thieves from my homebrew setting.

Righteous.

If there were to be a martial arts tournament to decide the fate of Golarion, which god(s) would referee it?

Irori.

Thanks for the answers, James. They're all pretty helpful! Was quite surprised to see that your favourite dino-companion is not a rex, but I suppose a deinonychus kinda looks a little like a mini-rex, no? XD

My thoughts have turned to my own upcoming improved familiar, and I noticed the Cassisian Angel. I had thought it to be a flying helmet, but then I noticed the size, and realised that it's apparently not a flying human-sized helmet, but rather a helmet the size of a gnome! Any idea if this is an error? Also, would like your take on what is the coolest improved familiar for (a) a lawful-good sorcerer and (b) any sorcerer.

It's not an error... the Cassisian angel isn't meant to be something you wear on your head, despite the way it looks.

As for the coolest familiar for a lawful good sorcerer... I'd probably say homunculus.

The BEST familair for a sorcerer is a tie between pseudodragon and quasit.

Who should I ask how the pricing for the Sparkware Starknife (from the APG) works? (So I'm not exactly asking how the pricing works, but if you know, that would obviate the need to answer the question I did ask.)

Jason and Sean and Stephen are the ones who toil over on the design team... whether or not they have time to answer that question is up to them though.

I suspect the pricing works like this: when compared to other similar items, it felt about right. But I've not looked at it or done that comparassion myself, so I can't say for sure.

Alright. Thanks. (I'm ask about that one in particular because it has a very specific price that's close to what the guidelines give, but not exactly.)

Three reasons that I could think of off the top of my head...

1) They decided to round the final number to a nicer whole number.

2) They decided it was a tiny bit too good or too bad for the price and adjusted it a little bit so it was off of some other similar item's price.

3) No conscious reason at all. Coincidence/chance/error.

The price is 21,324 gp, so they didn't round the final number. Also, it's very close to the guideline price. Close enough to make me think I was missing something.

Gauss had a pretty logical explanation though. It looks like they rounded the magical component of the pricing. Though it also looks like they used the command-word pricing for what's described as (what I would consider) a use-activated item. Which brings up a few (hopefully simple) questions.

Does command-word pricing apply to any standard-action-use item?
Can a use-activated item be used as part of an iterative attack (assuming the stated use makes sense)?
Assuming the second answer is yes, can it be used multiple times per round?

Quasit...much as Erylium was a badass that gave my group a hard time, the idea of bonding with a creature who wants you to die so it can follow you into the afterlife and snag your soul as a bargaining chip seems a little perturbing. O_O

Pseudodragons are pretty high on my list too, although I tend to compare them with faerie dragons. Why do you prefer pseudodragons to faerie dragons?
