My preference is that all of the 1st edition Adventure Paths will have happened and that their resolutions were all/mostly PC victories, which means that yes, the Worldwound is closed, but that only means that rather than demons coming and going in that post-apocalyptic fiend-scarred wasteland, the demons are STUCK in that post-apocalyptic fiend-scarred wasteland.

Mr James!
I'm so excited about the Sandpoint book! I'm sure it will be awesome!
Now, an actual question:
You said you have been dropping clues about return of the runelords for a long time now, right? So, can you can point us out to where, so we can go treasure hunting?

The two best places would be Rise of the Runelords and Shattered Star.

I'm keeping a record of things in Pathfinder/Golarion, so all the deities, templates, player races, languages, iconics, etc.

I'd be honoured if you could take a look. If I have any errors, missing anything, or what content I can re-use for when I make a 2E version of this sheet.

All our stuff is 1st edition until we launch the final 2nd edition game next year. That includes this book, which will use 1st edition Pathfinder rules, but the majority of the book is edition-neutral.

Question,

The FAQ mentioned 2e will be tied more closely to fluff.

I'm concerned about how that will impact the usability of the rules for non-golarion campaigns without a list of houserules. I.E. the core rules of 1e do not require a cleric to follow a specific god, though golarion does. If they make the core rules match golarion, then that is another houserule that needs fixed, for a setting where clerics focus on a pantheon instead of individual dieties, like real history.

I like d20 as a toolbox, not for golarion (which I honestly am neutral on).

As a creator, I want players exploring my world, not the world described in the rulebook.

So, how will the current plans for 2e impact that?

So uh, figured out I should ask this early so I can take bandage off quickly:

So is Dominions of the Black's doomsday clock thing going to be just the playtest adventure and final 1e ap is something separate? I was really hoping for Dominions of the Black themed ap so I was really hoping playtest adventure was gonna be just a tie in for the ap and not whole thing :'D

Since there's a goblin iconic, should we assume goblins are going to somehow become more acceptable in society? Like, such that the average country village wouldn't think twice about a goblin walking into town, where before they might have assumed it was prelude to a raid.

So, will we get a Golarion campaign setting book for second edition, which incorporates official outcomes for the AP's of first edition?

Given what a fantastic upgrade the first edition book was over the 3.5E book (it's still my favorite campaign setting book, ever), I can only imagine how much better a second edition campaign setting book would be. :)

One of the things we're hoping to do is address things like that. Not so much by removing the Bekyar and their demon worshiping (there should be evil among all regions, after all, so that heroes have things to fight against), but downplaying them and skewing it more as an exception among some of them and not "all of them are demon worshipers," while simultaneously giving good guy groups more play. Can't go into much more details yet (other than to point out that one of the most powerful nations of all time, the Shory, is a nation of good-aligned Mwangi Expanse folk who we hope to do MUCH more with), but that's a great example of a choice we made 10 years ago that we'd like to change and adjust.

Sargava is hopefully going to skew away from the colonial aspect and the racial tensions and focus more on being a more healthy integrated society as far as culture goes that's wrestling with a shady past while having to work together to protect themselves from aggression beyond their borders (such as via monsters or Cheliax).

Glad to hear this! It was specifically the "Bekyar = demon worshipers" description in late 2000s-early 2010s books that felt off to us, not the idea that some individuals in every given culture are evil. That said, I'd definitely want to avoid running a Bandu Anghazan cultist against PCs.

I also appreciate that you conspicuously omitted Mzali from the list of potential threats to Sargava? I love the idea of Walkena, but he doesn't fit as a force non-Mwangi PCs (and many Mwangi PCs as well) will always have to be opposed to for their own self-preservation.

I prefer the term "flavor" to "fluff." (The word fluff marginalizes and trivializes the part of the game I'm the most interested in, since its definition when applied to something that's not physically fluffy like down or cotton is something of no consequence, or an error.

That said, for the moment you'll need to wait and see how we handle things when we release the playtest game at Gen Con. Once you see the rules in context, you'll have all the information you need to give us informed feedback; for now, it's not that useful to any of us and won't do much but stress you out if you worry too much about it. If we put out the playtest and there's a strong negative reaction to the content of world material in it, we'll consider adjusting it... but to be frank, I MUCH PREFER an approach similar to what we've taken with Starfinder as regards presenting content other than raw rules mechanics.

Doomsday Dawn is where we tell the story of the countdown clocks and the Aucturn Enigma and wrap up that whole story line, but it absolutely does NOT tell every single story we want to tell about the Dominion of the Black. They'll still be a part of both settings (Pathfinder and Starfinder) and we will very likely do more with them in the future.

As acceptable as half-orcs are, yes. There'll still be fear about them, but the overall thing is that one or two goblins are at worst pests and at best heroes. It's when you see a swarm of angry goblins (or humans or half-orcs or dwarves or whatever) doing things that you'll need to worry.

Racism will still exist, and playing the "outsider" (as in someone outside of society, not a monster from another plane) is a role that half-orcs and drow and now goblins has long appealed to certain players.

You'll need to wait until the playtest to see more details on how we present goblin PCs as opposed to goblin monsters. Just like human PCs and human monsters (like Queen Ileosa, Karzoug, the Technic League, or the Red Mantis Assassins).

For now I'm working on Return of the Runelords, and will be for the next 6 or 7 months... not sure what part of 2nd edition I'll be working on next, frankly, or if I'll be doing anything more than overall creative direction. In THAT capacity, the part I'm most eager to set direction for is the choice of monsters that we launch with.

Oh, ok. Btw, really excited to hear that 1e aps might be considered to have happened in 2e(I always wanted to know how the discovery of the last city in serpent's skull affects world among other things), does the same also apply to the 1e modules? :)

It will likely apply to the modules, although in some cases older modules aren't specifically set in Golarion at all, and in others we've already long since made that assumption, and in most the events are so localized and minor that they won't have much impact on a global or even regional scale.

I've had this question for a couple years now and I guess this is an okay day to ask it.

When I look at the description of Xhamen-Dor and extrapolate what it's original form might have looked like, I come up with a big reptilian creature with lots of tendrils coming off of it. I think that description has been alluded to in a couple different sources.

For those following along, there's a handy illustration at the PathfinderWiki

In Strange Aeons, we learn about the relationship between Hastur, Carcosa, and Xhamen-Dor. I won't go into any more details to avoid spoilers.

I'm an older gamer like yourself. One day it occurred to me that the description of Xhamen-Dor resembles the illustration of Hastur drawn by Erol Otus, that appeared in the original AD&D Deities and Demigods, which contained the Lovecraft and Moorcock material. Handy reference here: Erol Otus's Weird Hastur

My question: Coincidence? Kindly homage?

If this has been asked before, my pardons. I don't follow the thread regularly. This is just the easiest way to ask the source.

So will you guys still make campaign/setting type books with no or little 2e rules for those of us who would like to still buy at least some stuff from you guys after 1e ends?

Both. The Erol Otus art of the Lovecraft monsters from Deities & Demigods is some of my favorite artwork from 1st edition D&D, and that article is what introduced me to Lovecraft. I also used to draw a lot more back in those days, and one of the ways I practiced was by doing studies of D&D art—copying the art by hand but making it bigger. Among the art I studied was that illustration of Hastur (along with the illustration of Cthulhu in the same book). When I invented Xhamen-dor for a short story I wrote back in High School around 1987 or thereabouts, I also drew a few early pictures of him that were very much in the style of Erol Otus's artwork.

"Decision time at the story department" began a few years ago in this context. There's still plenty of time for folks to ask questions and make suggestions about where they'd like us to go in 2nd edition, of course, but we've already done a LOT of the early groundwork for this and made several decisions already. In fact, I HAVE made a decision on the topic you spoilered—a decision Rob and I have talked about on and off pretty much since he first started work on Reign of Winter like half a decade ago.

But we don't reveal those decisions before the time is right.

The type of campaign setting books we'll be making will be similar in content to those we do now. Some will be rules heavy, like the Technology Guide or Paths of Prestige. Some will be flavor heavy, like Magnimar—City of Monuments or the various Monsters Revisited books. Some will be a balance between the two, like Inner Sea Magic or Horror Realms.

That said I hope you DO check out what we end up doing with 2nd edition. You never know... you might like it!

I'm absolutely aware of it, and am constantly trying to remain aware of it, and I apologize if I offended you.

As for dual worshiping—I have NO problems with that at all, but keep in mind that in this game, we have specific rules that apply specifically to clerics who worship singular deities in the form of favored weapons and domains and the like. Clerics are, as the game has evolved, the class who worships a singular deity and gains powers. The role of a class that worships a group of powers or other mystic traditions not represented by a single deity are oracles, who do NOT gain favored weapons or domains in the same way. I have no problem with a group worshiping a "mini pantheon" of deities that includes Desna and Gozreh, or of them calling it anything different, but the idea that this creates a separate conjoined deity that exists apart from Desna and Gozreh being their own thing is what doesn't have a place in the setting.

If you're a cleric, you worship a single deity. (And by extension warpriest, since they're a hybrid class of cleric.) You can be a cleric and worship a deity and still respect other deities, but you still worship one deity. Pretty much ANY other of the 39 classes can choose to worship a single deity, a pair of deities, a pantheon, a philosophy, or whatever. If you want to do so and cast divine spells, you should play a divine caster who's not a cleric or warpriest (aka oracle, paladin, ranger, druid, hunter, shaman, etc.). Societies who follow these traditions and have divine spellcasters in their societies would have those roles played by the same—orcales probably being the most common. And frankly, you can be religious without being a divine caster too, and there are classes like spiritualist and witch which aren't divine but have strong religious undertones.

But again... please remember that what I'm talking about is in the game. It's not meant to accurately portray real-world faiths or religious truths or beliefs. It's inspired by them, me saying "You have to worship a single deity if you want to be a cleric" is NOT the same thing as me saying "If you in real life want to worship a single deity, you have to call yourself a cleric." That's nonsense in the same way that no real-world person has an alignment, and we don't have hit points, and we don't instantly learn a new language by spending a skill point.

Once the second edition of the game is released. We'll keep some 1st edition products in print as long as they continue to sell, but won't be doing more of them ourselves. If there's a demand for such products, the PRD remains viable for third party publishers to pursue.

Is there any friction between worshippers of Gozreh and worshippers of the Green Faith? Likewise, is there any friction between the good-aligned gods and the green faith?

I recently ran a situation where a local church of Serenrae was reluctant to resurrect a prominent druid PC of the green faith because she was so vociferously against the role of the gods in people's lives. While my players went along with it, one of them made the case that the church of Serenrae is simply more compassionate than I depicted them, and they wouldn't be that petty. I recognize that it's my game, so it's canon, but I want to render an honest version of the wonderful world you've shared with us.
