one of the shops (a card/giftwrap shop) has put out it's christmas display

I am so sorry that american retardation has inffected the uk. *screams "run darren brown run they want to steal your mind powers"*

Just because The smitter's comment doesn't relate to the original post doesn't make it any less true...

That is grim, grim news indeed.

I hereby volunteer to hide Darren in my bed so that the evil Xmas gnomes can't steal his mind powers.

So long as someone is buying, there will be someone providing. Some people like to get their holiday shopping done very early so they can kick back and enjoy their holiday season. I've got a friend who does about 90% of her holiday shopping in August and September (because of her work schedule) and just picks up the odds & ends (the remaining 10%) in the following months. She said doing this has allowed her to relax and enjoy her holidays with her family and friends. I wouldn't fault the stores for recognizing this demand, however small, and even hoping to foster it in others, because if more people did this, it would (theoretically) spread some of the holiday rush out through the prior months.

Just my 2cp.

Yeah, damned American capitalism!

I am SO F'ing tired of the "Let's Hate on America" band-wagon!

We have more dead Americans buried on European soil, defending YOUR freedoms, that it's not even funny...

Besides, when did wanting to make money become solely an American value?

Yup. Because that's how capitalism works, kiddos. The store wouldn't do it if they weren't making a profit at it.

So, rather than being upset that someone is making some money, kvetch about the people who would dare think far enough ahead to want to avoid the Christmas shopping crowds. Actually sounds like a win-win to me.

In another county, no less.

There seems to be a bit of a disconnect here. I can totally get why people might want to start buying Christmas gifts in August. I know people who do all of their Christmas shopping for the next Christmas right over the post-Christmas sales, though I myself am more of the 'finish shopping on Christmas Eve' type.

But what does that have to do with stores setting up their full Christmas displays in August? One isn't necessary for the other and it just seems a bit silly. I love Christmas and all of the decorations and such that surround it, but I'd be happy for stores to remain undecorated until November at least!

I agree with you. I have bought gifts throughout the year in the past (niece, nephew, 5 godkids, friends' kids, families... it adds up) But we have a 'No Christmas stuff before black friday' rule in the Hermitage.

This year it's going to really suck.

Yeah, get with the Christmas-spirit!

And I do seem to recall that the commercialisation of Christmas should be blamed on those durn victorians. Bunch of sexually repressed perverts the lot of 'em

Usually you follow 'more' with a comparison, linked with 'than'.

Like, 'more dead Americans buried on European soil than buried on American soil.'. Or 'more dead Americans buried on European soil than Europeans buried on European soil'. Of course, neither of those are true, so you'll have to come up with your own.

Now, I'm just a former soldier and current Jew, so forgive me any mistakes I might make regarding Christmas...but isn't it a global holiday? Americans aren't the only Christians in the world, and Christians aren't the only ones who celebrate Christmas. I'm pretty sure there is no single country that can claim a monopoly on ruining holidays through over-commercialization.

Liberty's Edge

As a crafter, I can tell you that July-August is when most retail/boutique stores are preparing for Christmas sales. Holiday Craft Fairs and Vendor Fairs are heavy July through September, as it is the strongest time of year for hand-crafted item sales. There are a few holiday fairs in October, but usually this is a Last Blast as most retail/boutique stores have finished their holiday shopping and are looking forward to January/February/March sales focused on home decoration, home improvement, kitchen appliances, and bedding.

Craft and Vendor Fairs provide late spring and summer goods from December through March, then there is usually a lull in crafting until July. The months of April through June are very much focused on community fairs and crafting events.

You can be obtuse all you want. The fact remains that there are roughly 100,000 American soldiers buried across Europe who died during WWI & WWII defending the freedoms of the people of Europe...

A fact that many (note I didn't say all) seem not to remember or just don't care about that little tidbit of their history because they are too busy blaming America for all the sins of the world (like Capitalism for example, to which the "Father of Capitalism" BTW is accredited to being Adam Smith, who was from Scotland I might add)...

I take it you disagree?

There are two examples of this thought process up-thread...

and...

divineshadow wrote:

Am I missing something?

I read American greed is responsible for stores in the United Kingdom for putting Christmas decorations up in August, and that is somehow an aspect of "American Retardation"

One just has to turn on their television set (or whatever their prefered form of media happens to be) to see/hear/read more examples of this kind of thinking...

So again, if I'm missing something, please, enlighten me...

-That One Digitalelf Fellow-

Digital Elf - compleatly off topic:
I think the only thing you are missing is that they weren't fighting for "European's freedoms", because if they were, they'd have entered the war a lot sooner, rather than when threatened themselves. Rather they were fighting to make sure the spread didn't come to adversely affect them, and to get some help in their war in Asia. Amongst a lot of other reasons.

Yes, you helped, rather a lot, even before entering the war. Thank you. Now please stop.

That and a little Christmas spirit :)

Excellent! This means I have to wait less than 6 weeks before I can buy those meringue eggs Haribo makes for Eastern! :)

I sure hope this hits Germany soon. Maybe I can convince the company to give me my holiday bonus sooner because the Christmas Shooping Season is on ;-)

It's one thing to criticise your own country, and another entirely to Godwin a thread about Christmas.

So, it's arrogant to be fed up with all the hate aimed at my country??

We do more for the world (as a nation, and as a people) to help those in need (be it from famine, war, natural disaster, or what have you) than any other nation...

And all we get for our trouble is:

divineshadow wrote:

We don't ask for any thanks, but we would like (as does everybody, pretty much world-wide) a little appreciation...

So you're entitled to your opinion of us, but...

I don't know...

There just seems to me to be a lot of unfounded anger in your post aimed towards America...

Enjoy the rest of your day...

+1

Plus, DigElf, although I sympathize, I believe the original troika of America-hating posters are Americans. Can't blame the Euros for the self-loathing so many of our youths feel towards our nation. But, it's not surprising, considering what they are taught about our history after all ...

Oh and by the way, 'Divineshadow', historically Victorian England's 'obsession' with Christmas (and their royal family's Germanic customs for the season like the Christmas tree) infected the US, not the other way around. I refuse to describe it with the 'R' word, as I find that very offensive.

"This is why God made whiskey, and also why Wild Turkey comes in $300 shaped canisters during most of the Christmas season."

You'd think after 11,000 posts (including aliases) they'd give me a personalized avatar but noooo.

As for the original topic, the only appropriate times for a man to do Christmas shopping are December 22 through 24th and January 1st through 7th. I'm being generous including the 22nd in there for those overly organized guys.

As for America-bashing, I find it almost as boring as flag waving. Both are given to gross over generalizations about people based on their citizenship.
