I used to use Latvia as my default for obscure scapegoating, that is until Kruelaid said he was Latvian. Then I switched over to Estonia and it's been smooth sailing ever since.

Oh, thank goodness. I'd forgotten what I said. Please forgive me. /friendly sarcasm, if there be such a creature

See, this is why I tend to stay out of political threads. Sarcasm, however friendly, isn't necessary. No one was questioning anyones rights and I wanted to make that clear. So I'll in turn ask you to forgive me for quoting you where apparently no quoting was required. My bad.

Kobold Cleaver wrote:

Actually, I agree with you all that there's no need to threadjack the thread. The 'rights' were referring to his right to mock a country without being flamed, but flamed seemed a strong word, so I deleted it.

It never seemed to me he intended to start a discussion, since being American, it was most likely a little jab at America's commercialism which we, as Americans, tend to embrace. I could be wrong, but that's how I interpreted it, and I'm surprised my comment (or his, for that matter)earned this apparent irritation.

I'm not flaming anyone, and I'm not irritated. Imagine that I am completely rational and calm, and simply didn't want to be misunderstood?

Kobold Cleaver wrote:
I never meant to become involved, I had hoped that my pointing out that one of the 'offenders' wasn't being a crazy racist European might help to cool off this rather heated debate.
I too did not mean to become this involved in this thread. I never assumed anyone was a crazy racist European. I understand that I'm participating in this discussion, but I'm not taking part in the "heated" aspect. It's not productive.

Right, it's why I said flaming was too strong a word.

houstonderek wrote:

If someone has a right to say something, others have a right to flame it. You don't want to get flames, stfu. Otherwise, don't cry if people jump on you for your opinion.

"Waaaa, mommy! I said America is the suxxors and people were big meanie heads to me for it. Waaaa!"

Wow. Trolling much?

I'm out of this. I don't understand how or why this started, and I really don't understand why the thread hasn't been locked yet.

My point was, if you don't want to start a flame war, don't make incendiary statements. And if you do choose to make said statements, don't get your panties in a bunch when people react negatively to them.

Just read through that thread, with American and anti-american feelings, etc... and I happen to have the perfect lyrics to make everyone happy:

Right wing commies
Leftist Nazis
Point their fingers
Rumours linger
We don't care what you think
Branded sexist
Labelled racist
Want it clearer?
Check the mirror
We don't care what you think
Lies and slander, in vain try to shame us
Riots, protests, violence just makes us famous
TV interviews, free publicity
Increase record sales dramatically
The left, they say I'm fascist
The right calling me communist
Hate, hate, hate, hatred for all-one and all
No matter what you beleive
Don't believe in you-and that's true
Some would say that we're biased
Accusations that we are racist
Well, s@@& comes in all hues
Now this means you
'Cause things ain't always like they seem
Like they seem
We hate everyone
We don't care what you you think

Type O Negative, for those who know.

And this old time classic will definitely soothe everyone, and bring us the real xmas spirit:

"Old Saint Nick's got Bourbon breath
It's so cold you could catch your death
A cop sold me some crystal meth

It's a merry f!$#in' Christmas

Everything's so Criss-muss-ee
The streets are twinkling with frozen pee
My priest just sat on Santa's knee
It's a merry f%++in' Christmas

All the kids go to bed each night
To dream what Santa brings 'em
Unless they're Jewish or Muslim
Or some other gyp religion

Crappy toys flyin' off the shelves
Midgets dressed up to look like elves
Spread good cheer or burn in Hell
It's a merry f%$!in' Christmas

Cracklin' fires to keep me warm
And my collection of Asian porn
Cradle my bells and work my horn
It's a keep-on-truckin'
Last-year-suckin'
Midget-chuckin'
Slap-the-puckin'
How-much-wood-could-a-woodchuck-chuckin'
Merrrry f*****in' Christmaaaaaas"

It's not that hard to grasp really, but I see I'll have to make a special effort:

There were some AMERICANS who spoke ill OF THEIR OWN COUNTRY. Soneone then took EXCEPTION that AMERICANS were bashing his beloved AMERICA, and RETALIATED. AGAINST FRIKKIN! EUROPE! BUT NO EUROPEAN WAS INVOLVED.

So to sum it up:

So you attack me personally (by calling me a jerk)??

That makes sense...

I did not make a personal attack upon those whom specifically I thought were attacking my country (even if they were fellow Americans), to which I guess I apparently mistook as being from Europe (as their profiles speak NOTHING of their nationality). It is non-the-less an easy mistake to make, as we are bombarded daily by the media (both foreign and domestic) on how much the rest of the world seems to hate us (the comments of the two posters in question fell right in line with this)...

It gets tiring..

So yeah, I wrongly, through my own anger, "attacked" another continent...

But you made it personal, and "attacked" me...

While I made several "snarky" comments aimed your way, I never "attacked" you personally (by resorting to name-calling or what-not)...

And, it may be a point towards the obvious...

But it would seem (as you're the only one still dwelling on this) that you have yet to let go of your own anger concerning this...

You know, DE, back when you spat the dummy at the beginning of this thread, I got the impression you'd probably had a bad day and were venting. That's OK, it happens, we all go off on a bit of nerd rage from time to time. I've done it (more than once) and now you have. It's cool, we'll just move on, and it's not that important anyway. However, that day was several days ago. You said your piece, defended your claim, we know your position on the subject. Maybe the time to move on has arrived, and you should take that boat and ride it into the sunset, honour defended. Just a suggestion.

*EDITED for tone*

Good job contributing to the problem! Your arrogant outburst made me adjust my opinion of Americans downward a bit.

Funny how one person's outburst make you lower your opinion of Americans..not just the person who made the comment. Yours is just another comment that lumps all Americans together.... And then you wonder why Americans (not all) get angry when non-Americans make blanket comments like that.

Liberty's Edge

The previous post kind of makes my point about the "two wrongs don't make a right" comment. One person painting Europeans with the same brush doesn't give somone the right to paint all Americans with the same brush in return. Not all of us are arrogant and think that the world owes us a debt of gratitude. On the other hand I refuse to apologize for being American because there is neither anything wrong being from America nor being any other country.
