As a fellow Best-Master who came this close to beating you guys in the PaizoCon trivia contest, I must protest your inclusion in the RPG Superstar 2010 contest!
Jason? Back me up here! Your Brazen Strumpets took them into "overtime" as well.

BRAZEN STRUMPETS 4LIFE!!!
Just like Superstar, right there up to the end but aced out at the finish line. That's awright. The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat and alla that.
That's a cool thing about this contest (and really the Paizo fandom at large) - it encourages people to encourage one another, and if I was able to provide encouragement to you to get in on this throwdown, then I'll count it a day well spent. Neil said last year he had taken some inspiration and insights from my almost-there run the previous year and he did me one better and grabbed the brass ring himself; who knows, maybe this is a good omen for you! :)

I don't know about you guys but the wait until January 19th is going to kill me. That gives WAY to much time to second guess my design decisions.
My advice is not to second-guess yourself too much. You're going to have to rely on your gut instincts in later rounds, so you might as well start now! If the anticipation a big problem for you, submit your item early and then start reading the old threads about later rounds. Ignore wondrous items entirely. Get your mind off of them by focusing on something else.
(Or take the advice of others who have posted and set your item aside to re-think it later before submitting. But, in the meantime, think about something else!)

Yeah, I'm right there with you. Right now, I'm thinking I probably undercosted my entry. *mutter* I think it rocks otherwise though!

I see that the submissions for round two are due the 22nd of january. Isn't three days very little to come up with a new design?
It says "round begins" on the 19th, but that's just the first day on which they'll accept submissions. Unless they're testing split-second deadline response, I anticipate we'll know what the first Secret Challenge is on the 2nd, giving a solid three weeks.

Don't count on it. Part of the competition is adaptation.
Think of it as going from American Idol to Chopped.
(yes, the roommate is infecting me with reality TV *sobs*)

I agree with Matthew Morris. Don't count on it. Last night James Jacobs hinted that the short deadlines are by design. Superstars are expected to be able to produce quality material quickly.. as freelancers are somethings called in on emergencies.
That is.. brainstorm an idea quickly and present it professionally in a short amount of time.

I did it ! I took Clark's review of my item from the last year, reworked it, made sure to comply with PF rules and ... here we go !
I took the opposite view and came up with somthing entirely differen rather than rework an old item. My feedback last was "good but not good enough", apparenlty it also made the judges giggle a bit.
Though I am also beginning to second what I submitted, especially the math. Doesnt matter how many times you check it as soon as you hit submit you think of something else. :)

Three days is very little to come up with a new design. And that's why you'll face such a deadline. Freelancers are often required to make quick turnarounds on stuff. So, prepare for it.
The first year of RPG Superstar, they had a full week between finding out they made the next round of the competition...to review the new rules for the next round (which get posted on the very same day)...to design their next submission...and to get it turned in on time.
The second year of RPG Superstar, they went with 3-day turnarounds...but, at least we knew the general purpose of each round (i.e., villain, stat-block, lair, etc.). This year, it appears you guys get none of that. You're going in blind. So, be...on...your...toes!

I dont know if you remember Mr. Nelson, but I was the guy in the grand melee who got color sprayed at your table in round 2. and sat that way for about 6 rounds and coup-de-graced 3 times before I finnally died.
no offense but...
R.F.B.U.#107 rowing back in 2010!!!!
I remember you now! Look at it this way - you survived 3 CDG's!!! :)

Those heads up only went to those still in the round. And yes they were pretty general, but...
...you do have two years of stuff to look upon and you know what sort of things gamers and publishers want. You can probably guess the general submissions for later rounds. Start making notes now.
Or... wait until you submit your wondrous item, then start making notes.

I suppose this time of year may be good for the kiddos on holiday break after exams, but for me its crazy time at home and work. I suspect if I submit anything it won't be worth a damn.
You might suspect it, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and the judges wanna behold your item!!! SUBMIT!

Hey guys! This is actually my first post, and I just entered my submission for this years RPG Superstar. Been playing D&D for 10 years now, and been a GM for two of them. The reason I submitted this early is the christmas rush, and a lot of work. I feel that I have submitted a pretty fun item, but who knows? It might be crap, hehe;)
Anyways, I wish all of you guys the best of luck for this years competition!

I know what you mean. I got some feedback before submission that was all good (they thought it was cool), but I'm really nervous now, heh.

But what about a bee holder?

** runs off to stat up a misplacer beast ... **
I just can't shake the image of a placid cow-like creature with an unnaturally long tongue that attacks as a tentacle and delivers spell-like effect that causes predators to blink uncontrollably around the landscape with random distance and direction for a number of rounds, with them taking damage every time they appear in a solid object. I can see the players wandering through the landscape and seeing coyote skeletons sticking out of trees and cliff-faces and thinking WTF?

Actually I had in mind a highly intelligent, cthonian tentacled horror (a'la Neothelid/Seugathi) who uses multiple magic items as his means of attack - except that he keeps misplacing them and constantly mutters "where did I put that wand of disintegrate" to himself in Undercommon.
Though your example is stellar too :)

**Good luck to all the other contestants entering for 2010**
About me, I have played RPG’s since the early 80s and have enjoyed it all my life. I have run vigilant long standing campaigns with vast worlds of my own creation which unfortunately never made it to print. I had hoped to work with Gary G. and many of the others who had their hand in the creation of D&D/AD&D but his loss now makes that hope fleeting. I started playing in the Pathfinder world with friends here recently and have found the modules rich, entertaining and fresh which deeply appeals to my creative side even enough to give this competition a try. So to the creative team behind Pathfinder I give you folks thumbs up and to the marketing folks thank you for giving the typical Joe a chance to see something we have created possibly go to print.
You guys are great

Do people think it is more important to be simple or serious?
I would go with the one you would actually use in a game. In particular if it instigates some role-playing opportunities as well as being generally useful to the players. A funny item can do that, but I think it would be harder to pull off.
