Dumb monster? I was gming a homebrew game and my pcs encountered "3 winged cats" my player asked my why the cats had 3 wings... then asked how many there were, even when there was 3 X's on the map.
An unexpected monster was in that same one game where someone played a character with low int. He came in mid game, so I placed him in a cave where the players were exploring, knowing they couldn't resist a cave. Well the cave was the new pc's home, so when they entered he attacked them defending his home (not something that was expected by anyone, he was brand new to roleplaying and didn't know what to do). The players complained, they were at low levels still and this barbarian did pretty good damage to the other pcs before the fight was stopped. It was kinda of interesting because a PC became a monster for a quick second.
