Yes, but did anyone read it? You're expecting RPG Superstar contestants to actually read(!) stuff and plan accordingly(!)? You make it sound as though the winner of this contest has to be all professional about it, like someone designing a published module or something.

We're just testing your Perception skill.

I did!

Rules-fu sounds scary enough already... Brr, I don't want to have to come up with new mechanics so early in my "adventuring" career.

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16 aka jmberaldo

Well, I came up with new rules for my wondrous item :D

Considering what is behind my villains concept, i guess coming up with new rules for it won't be that hard now... as long as I dont spend too much time explaining the origin of the rules idea ;)

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32, 2010 Top 8 , Star Voter Season 6

I'm sure this will come back to bite me, but if I were to somehow make it to round three, my rules fu is strong.

But don't get me wrong. I appreciate lots of folks liked my villain. And I appreciate you guys liked it and voted for it, too. I'm just saying the contest is far from over. It's only one round. Everything resets with the next assignment. And it feels...odd?...stressful?...to be singled out quite so starkly. It also heaps a lot more pressure to somehow meet a higher set of expectations...

Neil, if it helps, I didn't vote for you. :)

Do you remember what the reward is for getting an early lead in the Diplomacy game is?

Whew! Finally finished reading all the villains and all the feedback. And all I can say is that I've gained massive respect for the judges. Just trying to think about villain concepts right now gives me a headache.

Vividly, because it happens to me every time I play. I keep forgetting that it isn't a strategy game. We have a house rule: everyone who plays Diplomacy has to be able to get home on their own.

The Exchange

Great game!

Oh the tension. Right from the moment the countries are decided.

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32 aka kid america

We interrupt these regular trustworthy posts with a little reverse psychology message.

Don't vote for anyone in the bottom sixteen.

Vote for everyone in the top sixteen.

Nobody likes a dark horse candidate to get a vote, or a long shot bet to win.

(villainous laughter)

We now return you to our regularly scheduled posts Saturday Night Hobo Fights.

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16

Well, voting is complete. Now we wait. And wait. And wait...

Just as long as only fifteen of you have better luck than me, that is. ;-)

Good luck to all the contestants.
Congratulations to those that advance.
To those that do not advance, let me say nice work. I enjoyed reading all the entries.

I honestly don't know if I'll be more relieved to go on to the next round, where I know I'm strong, or if I don't advance and can stop stressing for a few days.

Congratulations to the top sixt...err, seventeen! (how cool is that?) I wish all of you the best of luck, and I really look forward to seeing great things from you.

I'd also like to thank everyone again for all of the great feedback, especially the judges. I've learned a lot, even from just one round, and I look forward to applying those lessons next year.

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32 , Star Voter Season 6 aka TerraNova

Well, i wrote a short concession on my blog. The gist of it is "the better contestants won". I wish all of you good luck, and am really interested to see how this race turns out in the end.

I'll try again next year - maybe a little better prepared. If I get to the top 32 again (hey, the Maw managed!), expect a four-week result instead of a two-day result.

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16 aka NChance

Congrats to everyone who made it and best of luck next time around for those that didn't. I'm off to pass out for a minute before helping the wife strip paint off the stairs/think up an interesting villain's stat block.

Cheers!

Even if I did, I would not qualify for entrance, so I would not be that motivated to create one. :D

According to conspiracy theorists, the Illuminati didn't build their own temples. They just moved into Masonic temples and hung out with ordinary, non-Illuminati Masons. A secret society within a secret society. So clearly, the Top 16 don't need their own special pad.

Not that we Top 16 have anything to do with the secret societies. And I assure you, there's absolutely no secret significance to the ominous prime number that appeared a few days ago, usurping a role supposedly reserved for a nice, wholesome 16.

Given that you're also in this year's Top 16, I'm going to assume that the above quote, when translated into English, says something that can be paraphrased as: "This stupid stat block! It's taking for freakin' ever!"

I know my stat block took forever. And it's huge. Nay, gargantuan. Floating somewhere around 1,800 words. Three freakin' pages of nothing but stat block and math!

Oh sure, just rub it in cuz you've got the easy mechanic:

Drinking souls in three easy steps.
1 - Obtain soul.
2 - Mix soul, sour mix, two shots of whiskey.
3 - Serve over ice.

;D

Uh, yeah - things are HUGE. Especially since the format is not the place where you can shorthand with 'as the Druid ability'.

All the math, while necessary for the judging of the round, makes things look horrible.

I was sad that BBCode wouldn't let us use color this time around (or if it would, by Asmodeus I could never get it to work).

Testing a theory (too late now):

SkillName +23

Spoiler:
[10 ranks, +3 class skill, +2 magic item, +4 racial, +4 Stat]

*shrug*, can't get 'em on the same line...

I was sad that the blank stat block specifically listed the BBCode that we were supposed to use. I really wanted to use the list BBCode to indent certain things (and almost did). But then I realized it might be against the rules to start adding BBCode that wasn't explicitly called for by the blank stat block. So everything ended up looked cramped and ugly.

Aside from the fact that it might be violating the rules, there actually is a way to color things; use ooc blocks:

SkillName +23 [+20 ranks, +3 stat]

Yet another formatting convention I refrained from using because the formatting rules were so strict.

The formatting rules didn't prevent you from using the [ooc] BBCode. Rob McCreary used it last year to great effect. Clark even praised him for it.

There was nothing about the stat-block formatting that ruled out what you could do to highlight the "math" anyway. It was basically just there to show you what needed to be bolded and italicized. So I used the [ooc] BBCode exactly for those reasons.

My two-cents,
--Neil

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2009 Top 8 aka Tarren Dei

Yeah, I don't think [ooc] would have been against the rules. Wish I'd thought of it.

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 8

If I had realized that [occ] was how you did that.. I certainly would have!

I did however use the spoiler tags to break up the three sections in the hopes it would be a little easier to read.

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16 , Marathon Voter Season 6, Dedicated Voter Season 7, Star Voter Season 8 aka Ezekiel Shanoax, the Stormchild

That is what the ooc BBCode does?! *forehead slap*

I just thought that color tags had been an option in 2008 and for whatever reason had been disabled this year.

Yeah, I saw the praise Rob McCreary received last year for it, and tried to act on it...

Oh well, folks will see what I did instead of the ooc code...

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16, 2012 Top 32 , Marathon Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7, Marathon Voter Season 8, Marathon Voter Season 9 aka Epic Meepo

Yeah, I guess [ooc] was fine all along.

But I'm still glad I didn't use [list]. The blank stat block seemed rather specific about what tabs and line breaks we were supposed to use.

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16 aka Mark Thomas 66

Well my weekend goals have been accomplished, Friday re-read and post stat block, Saturday, finish building Xavier's crib.

Hello guild friends.

When you're done reviewing the RPG SUPERSTAR Sweet Seventeen's stat blocks and character tweaks, and still have a moment.

I reposted my Veddic entry with the meat back on the bones. I believe I've incorporated or addressed everyone's questions, suggestions and concerns.

Feel free to whack away at him if you have time or the inclination.

All criticism is welcome and appreciated. Got to start training for next year to hit the ground running.
