Oooh! I want!

I welcome and encourage you to sign up as a patron or senior patron (if you have not already).

Our patronage project is a bit different than Wolfgang Baur's Open Design,as Lands of the Jade Oath as the core book will not be exclusive, there is an exclusive adventure that only patrons will ever have access too.

We just released Wayne Reynold's Heroes of the Jade Oath Cover to the public today, last week we released the first preview, the second preview was released out to the patrons for thier review and imput today, it will be released ot the general public on OCT 13th.

Thank you for your intrest

This definitely looks interesting. Few quick questions:

1) It sounds like as a patron, you get PDFs of the setting book and the adventure with the cost of patronage, while print copies will be available "at cost"? Will this be through a POD shop like Lulu.com, or are you doing a decent sized print run and we would pay that cost? (Since, depending on the size of the print run, it could be a significant price difference between POD and traditional printer, especially for hardcover but there's lots of variables).

2) At one point on the webpage, you refer to the book as the "player's guide" - what are the general planned contents? Is it primarily a player's guide, or is it a full-on campaign setting book, or is it both? If you could post a general (tentative even) plan on the chapters, that might tip at least me into signing up. Or even analogies to existing setting books would be handy, so that we can have an idea of what to expect.

3) How much of the rules will be Open Gaming Content? I'm a fan of gaming with oriental-style material, but as a freelance writer (with possible aspirations to modest publishing as well), I'm also very interested in some solid, clear oriental-style OGC. The only stuff out there is either muddled OGC to the point of being unusable, not very high quality, or appears in bits and pieces throughout books rather than a single nice product like this.

4) Sorry one more - any general timeline on how long it'll take to produce? I didn't see that info offhand.

This looks like a very interesting product. Good luck, and hopefully I'll work patronage into my budget. :)

1) Correct, at this point it will be Print On Demand via Lulu.com, (we make $0 on the print copy, so make as many as you want) We are making whatever a patron wants from a softback black and white interior ($10-11 plus shipping) to hardcover full color interior artwork ($49-50 plus shipping). I have a thought about a bulk order for all patrons to see if we can get the costs down, but that will be a decision that will be up to the patrons.

Ken Marable wrote:

I will have Frank Carr (the author) address this question in detail.

I will say that besides the core book there will be an exclusive adventure.

Ken Marable wrote:

I always try to be very clear in the declaration of open gaming content vs. product identity. Look at our previews, read the declaration of open content and tell me if you think it is clear. As a patron, of course you can suggest changes to make it clearer if you find it muddled (I do not). As a Senior Patron, suggestions become requirements.

Ken Marable wrote:

The estimate from Editor Bill Collis is 6 months, he has a great deal more experience than I do with patronage projects from his work as Editor for projects like Open Design's Kingdom of the Ghouls and Blood of the Gorgon, the final draft of the manuscript is due from Frank to Bill on OCT 23rd.

We have plans for at least three future Jade Oath patronage projects; we will not have more than one going at a time and at minimum month break between each.

Ken Marable wrote:

Thank you, all the credit goes to Frank Carr.

I hope so too, remember the easy payment plan (I thank bill for that idea).

The original product proposed to Monte Cook was that it would be a complete book; however, as the project grew, it has evolved into a set of three PDFs (with Monte's permission).

The first PDF, "Heroes of the Jade Oath", which is the current patron project, is the largest of the three PDFs and is planned to be more of a player's guide with most of what will be needed to play in the setting and a little introductory "flavor text" for the setting.

It will open with an introduction and overview of the setting for Chapter 1.

Chapter 2 will cover the races: visiting how the Arcana Evolved (AE) races fit into the setting as well as introducing 4 new races, and even introducing rules for variant elves, half-orcs, and dwarves in the setting as if they were completely new races.

Chapter 3 will cover classes: how the AE classes fit into the setting and has conversion notes for fitting the 11 core classes into the setting as well. The Bard, Ranger, Monk, and Rogue are rewritten for the setting. Four brand new classes are introduced, including the Demon Hunter, Enlightened Scholar, and Kensai. A new Champion cause, 4 new witcheries, new akashic abilities, new aspects of power for the magister, and 6 new totems are introduced. Multiclassing notes are included also.

Chapter 4 covers skills and feats: Over a hundred new feats are presented along with a new skill - Feng Shui and more. Included are new types of feats as well (Ch'i, Chakra, and Unbound).

Chapter 5 is about combat rites and introducing paths. Combat rites were introduced in AE and I have written over 20 new ones for the setting. More paths will come in the second PDF, but there are 9, 3 of each type, presented here. Paths are something new, but similar to some things you have seen before. The quick and inaccurate way to describe them are as replacement or substitution levels combined with a prestige class, but they are not necessarily restricted to a single class or race. Like feats and prestige classes they have prerequisites, but each level in a path has a prerequisite and you do not necessarily have to take the level previous to the one you want as long as you meet the prerequisites for the level you want. There are 3 general types of paths, one of which is martial arts.

Chapter 6 is about new and optional rules for the setting, including how to handle spells with alignment in an AE setting like Lands of the Jade Oath and the new Throw maneuver, and other new concepts for the setting.

Chapter 7 is the equipment chapter and will introduce new weapons (monk's spade, hook swords, 3 section staff, etc.), weapon templates, new armor, etc.

Chapter 8 is about magic and has new magic templates, ch'i magic, sutra magic, and the oaths of power.

All this is tentative, depending on what the patrons and the editor say, but there you have it.

The second PDF will be more of a world book/setting guide/gazetteer and will also have some rules mechanics in it that could not be included in the first PDF (prestige classes and most of the paths used in the setting), though most of the PDF will be setting and "flavor/fluff" text.

The third PDF will be a bit more of a DMs guide to the setting with campaign setting "secrets", important NPCs, monsters, curses, magic items, rules for corruption, etc.

I hope that helps.

There is talk of three books...

Which one will be non-exclusive?

Will that book be available here on Paizo?

Assuming we make our production goal the book will be eventually be on sale as a pdf and POD book. The for sale price will be $60.00 for the PDF (add print costs to that for one copy)

The price will never be lowered, in addition you don't get the exclusive adventure. This is a promise I made to the patrons and patronage has its privliages.

Digitalelf wrote:

There is two books involved with this specific project one is the core book which is non-exclusive, the other is an adventure that is exclusive.

As I have stated the price for the core book if it goes on sale to the general public will be exactly the same as a standard patron membership and there will never be a sale price. (Unless via unananimous consent the patrons told me to put it on sale.)

The next Jade Oath Project after this is at a minimum 9 months away I will only say it will be up to the patrons.

Digitalelf wrote:

The Paizo Store does not currently carry any of Rite Publishing's product's

We are available via our website, Drive-thru rpg, Rpg Now, Your Games Now, and Lulu.com.

To be 100% honest, I have made several attempts previously to have our pdf products carried by Paizo's store but have never gotten even a rejection email, so I stopped sending the emails as I was quite content with our current vendors. In their defense I am a very small PDF/Print On Demand company for a niche fan community of Monte Cook's Arcana Evolved (This is not an attack on Paizo as I am a big fan).

Your welcome to ask them about carrying our products, so that we can make it available. I will get back to pestering them with emails about carrying our products.

Thank you for your response...

Another question for you: Can one pay for patronage via PayPal?

Just to be clear, in my previous post I forgot to address the exclusive adventure that comes with getting patronage. The other two PDFs I mentioned are just what is coming later after this project is done - neither of which are adventures.

The exclusive book is an adventure. The criteria and particulars of this adventure (i.e. levels covered, genre, general type of locales, organizations and/or events from the setting, types of monsters, etc.) are to be determined by the patrons.

Two Words: Celestial Bureaucracy!

It looks great, and I really wish I had the disposable income to become a patron, let along a senior one. (That goes for Mr. Baur's enterprise as well), since I would love to support projects like this. But Alas, I don't. Anyway, good luck with this. I hope it goes well and I'd love to see the finished product at some point.

There is another way for you to support the project if you cannot afford to be a patron, all of the sale from our mini-pdf book Mythical Monstrosities go toward the Heroes of the Jade Oath Patronage Project.

only $5.95 at lulu.com

It is also available at our other fine retailers Your Games Now and One Book Shelf (rpgdrivethu/rpgnow)

That would be me as editor. The long lead time also includes time for playtesting and patron comments. I hope to start a game myself while working on editing the manuscript. I have copies of Ashanderai's rough drafts, and there's a wealth of materials here (not to mention a lot of text too). The goal is to have it out before next Gen Con.

Do you get all 3 books for becoming a patron?
or just the one with the adventure?

One 300 page book, and the adventure

Just a Quick Update we now only need 4 patrons to meet our Production Goal.

I wanted to thank all of you for generating intrest in our product as we had 5 new patrons in less than a day our biggest one day surge yet.

Do I still have to purchase the book?
Or is it included with the $60 Patron?

fray wrote:

According to their webpage, a PDF is included in the $60 Patron cost (Actually, two PDFs - the main book and the patron-exclusive adventure).

A printed hardcopy is available for an additional, but discounted, cost according to an earlier post I quoted below. Patrons just pay the actual Lulu printing and shipping costs.

Ken has it correct

A small note: you are not limited to the # of copies you purchase as a patron. As one Senior Patron has put it he plans to purchase the Hardcover full color copy for himself and several Softcover black and white interior versions for his players.

Will you still take Patrons after the 4 spots are taken?

Same question for me as well...

I really do want the book (and the adventure), but I wont have the extra cash until after the 1st of December...

Yes, you can still join,I never turn down money (hehehe) the project starts on OCT 23rd (assuming we make goal); but you can join at anytime.

The 4 spots are required to meet the production Goal of 30 patrons (senior patrons count as two patrons). This means we have the funds to cover the costs of creating the book

The project will not close until we are done or we meet the stretch goal of 93 patrons. (Unless the patrons tell me to keep it open longer).

Thank you for your interest and don't forget

our 3 easy payment plan (heheeheh)

New patron here. Good luck w/ this project. It's great to see AE getting some more love. I look forward to seeing what you all can do.

Thanks BenS got you on the list o patrons

I just wanted to state here that we have reached our starting threshold (# of patrons required to cover all production costs; often refered to as our produciton goal)!

Our patron forums go live OCT 23rd.

Just thought I would share a new preview.

New Preview for Heroes of the Jade Oath Patronage Project

Rite Publishing is proud to present a new player race for Monte Cook's Arcana Evolved, compatible with the 3.5 version of the world's most popular roleplaying game.

Mandragorans are an exotic plantlike humanoid species known for their unique, tapered, head-vines called "nahmaun gorah". Mandragorans consider signed contracts as binding and unbreakable no their part. Paper is sacred and the written word is just as sacred as the paper it is written on. The spoken word is another matter altogether

LIVE!

How is this project going? Any chance that it will include a conversion to PFRPG when it is done, for those of us who do not have Arcana Evolved?

Bump.

The Heroes of the Jade Oath Beta (proofing copy was released on August 1st 2009, we are still at the proofing stage of our Beta (320 pages).

Once proofing is done,we will be working on the patron exclusive adventure, and Beta play-testing.

Conversion is a iffy thing due to our Arcana Evolved Limited Licence, we may have some web enhancements that talk about running pathfinder classes in Jade Oath. Yet right now our goal is to do play-testing and continue development, conversions will be something for down the road.

You can find 5 previews [url=http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/advanced_search_result.php?tag=5097]HERE[url]

Seems like that Arcana Evolved fella has taken somewhat of a shine to Pathfinder...

I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks for the answer, Qwilion. I wish you all continued success.
