We (and I think probably the British too) use it for both. Oh, and we use it for "thanks".

Confirmed. All three.

Haha! :D

Don't feel bad, Larcifer, I thought the same thing when FW started saying that! Fortunately, I have an English friend over here in Prague and I just asked him this weekend what it meant. I'm down with "cheers," but "ta" was a new one for me.

As an English teacher (using mainly British textbooks), I've always thought I was pretty knowledgeable about British English.

Curse you, French Wolf, for highlighting my lack of perfect knowledge of English! :)

Seems to me Tigger from Winnie the Pooh used to shout "TTFN, ta ta for now" whenever he was leaving. Not very common expression in my neck of the woods so if not for cartoons I'd have no idea what the wolf was talking about.

That was what I assumed it meant.

Any chance on Orick getting introduced in the game thread before you head out on vacation?

The Exchange

Orick Yes! and thrice Yes!

Funny we just finished reading all the Winnie the pooh stuff to our son (as bedtime reading).

Ta

The Exchange

Patrick - Korgoth can treat her however you wish. That pretty little bint is a slut's cast off.

Hey but you are SWASHBUCKLER! Ha HA! Swish Swash Buckle!

Of course you will treat her well, and leave with a wave and a kiss. Into the sunset...

You know me well but don't get too attached to anyone, they may not be around after Chapter Two, if you get my drift.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Of course. I just always get my Spidey Sense a tingling when the DM puts a pretty younger girl in my backstory. Nothing says "emotional trauma" or "Bitter life experience" than a love lost in youth to tradgedy.

The Exchange

DM adds to notes.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Monkey claps hand to mouth

GAAAHH!

The Exchange

DM tips hat to monkey.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

**grumble grumble me and my big ol' monkey mouth**

The Exchange

I was just wondering how this campaign is going for you folks. I've tried to keep things flowing but would appreciate some feedback.

I'm hope everyone is enjoying themselves. Let me know whether things are moving too slow or whatever too.

Ta (again)

Human

Enjoyable for me.

I like the sense of bewilderment (my most common state of mind anyway). The concurrant time lines are interesting to juggle, and I'm particularly enjoying the very naturalistic way the characters are developing. "Naturalistic" being a relative term in this case, since it's a fantasy world packed with magic and strangeness. And half-rasps.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

I like it so far. It's interesting how much I feel for poor Korgoth. The mocking in the market was actually very emotional, so that is working well to draw me into the game. I have a lot of empathy for the lil' proto-swashbuckler.

Human

Ditto. I was surprised how angry Taya felt when Korgoth was mocked and the whole bullies in the barn scenario is really disturbing and (sadly) plausible. Now she's all torn between making sure Nagy's safe and not letting anything bad happen to the others ... eeek.

The Exchange

This does raise a point. I do not want to spoil anything by upsetting anyone or bringing up any "old wounds". If you think the game is becoming too real then let me know.

I'd hate to overstep the mark.

Cheers

I think the story is great so far but I am getting nervous, I've had some lucky rolls with Orick so far, but what if he fails at life in the future? This is fun, but it's also worrying, and I'm not sure how I feel about that process yet :\

This is wonderful work on your part though Mr Wolf

Quick question: Are we all connected thus far? I know Orick and Bethsemane are related but who else is related and how else are we connected? Are we all friends? I'd just like to find out if we should bump into each other in the market.

Sovereign Court

Male Mostly Human

I've been enjoying it so far, but I have to confess that I've been so busy recently that I haven't paid attention to what's happening to everyone else on the thread. And the situation isn't going to get any better now that I'm going on holiday. I'll have a lot of reading to do to catch up when I get back.

FW, as you know, I'm going on holiday tomorrow. I'm sorry we didn't get further introducing her to the game, but please NPC Bethsemane if needed. I'll make one last post on the game thread, and update her profile with a wish-list for the second bout of training, if needed.

Ya Im loving it. I guess my biggest concern is trying to understand just how open-ended it is right now. For example, I dont want to blindly ruin some of your well-laid plans by carelessly making a bad chioce here and there.

Also, I have a bit of a hard time relating to a wild-raised elvish girl-child (LOL) so I am trying to make her seem as unusual and eccentric as possible, it is actually quite fun, though I get the idea that at times people are like WTF is that freaky Finwe doing now?!? On the other hand it is truly delightful to see the other children acting like children do, and I have to really applaud you FW for such an ingenious idea - to play as kids! Wow, really wild, and everyone is doing a spectacular job - if I had to be a favorite I would have to pick Orick, but it might be becuz his icon is so cute, or maybe that he reminds me of my 11 yr old son.

Seriously though, incredibly fun, though I dread to think what the melo-dramatic pubescent years might bring...

Ya I am loving it, but am self-concious that I am not holding up my end, so please be brutal with the stick if you need to keep me steered onto the path. Otherwise I will keep with the freaky Finwe as she is. (The more I think about it, the more I want to focus on the stealthy rogue aspects of Finwe over the combat side- though night-staling predator is still definitely her attack-form of preference.)

I am having fun, its a real excersize to hold back and get into the mind of a child, simple things may cause nervousness and terror, that I as an adult would not think twice of, its quite fun, and helps to Create a strong attachment to the character and other PCs, my rolling has been abysmal, but I do not care failure is a part of growing up and Vladimir will be the better for it. What is cool later on when time has passed in game and we are closer to adults if one of us gets seriously injured it will matter to us all, we all will be protect so and so! I like that idea. Kudos and thank you to all!

Like Larcifer, haven't succeeded on a roll yet, but having fun.

The main problem I have can't really be helped, which is that there's a flurry of posting when the UK folks wake up, and I feel like I'm playing catch-up a lot.

Human

Who else is UK? Apart from French Wolf and me I mean? Just curious... Now you mention it, there is a flurry around the time I tend to surface and for once I'm not solely responsible.

The Exchange

Pat - I post when my son is asleep (usually in the morning UK time) or wife is not at work. I wish I could spread the posting more.

What I try to do is post early in the day and in the evening but I can appreciate where you are coming from, it occasionally happens to me in Mothman's game. None of this helps you I'm afraid.

Cheers

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Folks, quick blurb..RL kicking me ATM, will try and post up later tonight if possible :)

Thanks for the responses folks.

I shall update the game tonight however the group in the market can make a start without me. If they want.

Basic Combat Information

Some of this is obvious and some of you know the rules far better than I but this may help one or two of you. The information is lifted directly from the SRD except point (4).
Those members of the party that drank from the magic pool are now medium and the rest are small.

1) No member of the party is trained in any weapon yet. When using a weapon with which you are not proficient, you take a -4 penalty on attack rolls.

2) Improvised Weapons - sometimes objects not crafted to be weapons nonetheless see use in combat. Because such objects are not designed for this use, any creature that uses one in combat is considered to be non-proficient with it and takes a -4 penalty on attack rolls made with that object. To determine the size category and appropriate damage for an improvised weapon, compare its relative size and damage potential to the weapon list to find a reasonable match. An improvised weapon scores a threat on a natural roll of 20 and deals double damage on a critical hit. An improvised thrown weapon has a range increment of 10 feet.

In effect everything is an improvised weapon to the party. The two penalties above therefore will not stack.

3) Unarmed Strike - A Medium character deals 1d3 points of nonlethal damage with an unarmed strike. A Small character deals 1d2 points of nonlethal damage. The damage from an unarmed strike is considered weapon damage for the purposes of effects that give you a bonus on weapon damage rolls.

4) Unless an NPC or PC is trained in a weapon then they do not threaten attacks of opportunity.

5) Spellcasters require the right materials to cast a 0 level spell otherwise they can attempt without at a DC of 20.

We'll deal with everything else as and when it crops up in combat.

Cheers

Female Human Sorcerer 0

I wonder if Jerrild and his gang are ticklish? Feathers as an improvised weapon ...

The Exchange

The Ken Dodd approach may not work.

But what a wonderful day, what a wonderful day to find out?

A Law

Killing someone is a bad thing. The authorities frown on it. Lethal damage such as from a dagger, that takes an NPC into negatives will probably kill them. You guys have the death's door rule to help recover, they don't.

I regret to write that I have to drop this game. It has been incredibly engrossing, but real life must come first. I hope this gang of children grows up to be a real band of heroes, good luck all! Thanks, French, for all your help, and keep up the great stuff you do!

The Exchange

Real life always comes first but sometimes I wish it didn't.

Otto take care of yourself and thanks for the prompt response.

I intend to recruit an eighth, rather than do this in the open does anyone have a suitable candidate?

Human

Possibly. I've been beguiling a member of our real life group with tales of pbp and he might well be interested. He has not played for a very long time but is keen to get back into gaming. I'll sound him out later today and report back - he's not actually a member of these boards yet.

Hey Rob not game related

Spoiler:
I sent you an e mail about Prauge

Could you tell me a bit about this chap/chapess?

Thanks for the info.

Let me know, Rev, what he decides. To keep everyone else in the loop, Rev has found a possible number eight. He is deciding whether or not to take the plunge.

Ok, except on assist checks, Nagy's rolled in double digits twice, and above 12 not at all. <grump>

Human

Am I seeing things? I could have sworn when I checked just before lunch that Taya had committed accidental murder. So I went into slight shock myself, and sat down to plan some kind of hermit like existance after the inevitable trial. Only, now she doesn't seem to have done that - which I'm very happy about :D

Righty ho. Plan B. Which will involve less screaming and cringing and running pellmell from the barn.

Nagy's rolls have a special magic all their own. In its own way, it's mightily impressive.

The Exchange

Had I rolled slightly more damage then yes. Murder.

Nasty sorcerers she is!

Human

Nearly made my heart stop, never mind Darin the weasel's. She will regard it as a wake up call about not knowing her own strength and to be a lot more careful shoving people off ladders in the future.

Hello all, I'm back. It'll take me a day or two to get caught up, but I'll get back into the swing of things ASAP. FW, let me know if there's anything else I need to know that happened while I was away. Also, I'll be gone again next week from 28-31 Aug at Gen Con UK, just to let you know.

Spoiler:
Right back at ya!

Rob - have a great con.

Keep an eye on the game thread in case the fight finishes quickly. Then we will move on to some dice rolls for each character anyway.

Cheers

Once the fight is over, we move on to the next step of the two year training plan.

Don't roll until the fight is finished.

---

These are the two major events that happen during the two years. Some of which directly effect the PC and some the village. One or two will have a major impact in the long run if they happen.

Good luck for when we get to the rolling and try to avoid the tax collectors.

---

Events
Roll a d20, on a 1-10 it is a bad event, on an 11-20 a good event.

Bad Events
1) Last 6 months spent ill, leads to a loss in training (-1 on all ability rolls to come in this training plan).
2) Tax collectors hit the family hard – someone in the stocks and Sir Kuiper takes the land, family no longer freemen.
3) A forest fire burns down the Shrine – Palfourd’s charred body is found (this can only be rolled once).
4) The militia return from the eastern woods and one soldier develops a bad cough. He collapses outside the PC’s home and is taken indoors. He dies a few days later at the infirmary.
5) Find a silver ring. It looks valuable.
6) Mentor dies naturally right before the end of training. (No effect on this training plan)
7) PC blamed on market day of thieving at the end of the first year. For the next twelve months and more his reputation suffers in the village. (-2 to any charisma based skill checks for this training plan)
8) A drunk soldier attacks and half kills the PC one night. The soldier is drummed out the militia and Captain Milestarn pays 100 gold in reparations to the PC. (-1 Cha permanent).
9) Lost in the woods for a week – eventually returned by a wood elf, warned to use common sense or torn apart by an owlbear next time.
10) The nightmares begin. For a few days every two to three weeks sleep is hard to come by. Spiders and webs figure large in horrific dreams. (roll a D20 every day, on a 1 the PC suffers from fatigue, this lasts indefinitely.)
11) Small love interest with a farmer’s child, ends with their death in an accident. (this can only be rolled once)
12) A forest fire destroys the PC’s home. Locals rally round and take in the unfortunates.
13) Horse accidentally runs over the PC – a broken leg takes a few months to fix and several more to recover full mobility. (-1 to all Dex based ability checks for this training plan)
14) PC loses something important to them.
15) Evan Drett holds a grudge with the PC after something happens. Evan is one of the veteran militia sergeants.
16) PC falls down a sinkhole into darkness after heavy rains. Tired, cold and hungry the dark closes in until eventual rescue by a search party.
17) Turrosh Mak is on the march, the militia are at full stretch. Then Domar Dranstan is lost in a skirmish to the south. (this can only be rolled once)
18) The Grossin’s disappear on a visit to Narwell. (This can only be rolled once, All prices in the village store for PHB goods are now increased by 20%)
19) In a summer lightning storm, the PC is struck, suffering black burns to both hands (-1 Dex permanently).
20) Cruel children hide your clothes whiel swimming in Tadpole Pond. Made a laughing stock as you return home naked.

Good Events
1) Someone’s passion is healing; they keep telling you all about it, gain Heal as a class skill, 0 ranks.
2) 2 wealthy Clerics arrive in town from the Church of Zilchus to set up a new All-Shrine. (this can only be rolled once)
3) A mentor or family member tells many stories about magical spells; gain Spellcraft as a class skill, 0 ranks.
4) In thanks for helping a merchant of Narwell, you receive 60 gold pieces worth of Adventuring Gear or Special Substances and Items (PHB page 128).
5) Saved the life of a bird, befriends you, 1-6 Raven, 7-12 Owl, 13-20 Hawk. (this can only be rolled once)
6) As you age, a natural ability to tell stories and entrance others comes, gain Perform (stories) as a class skill, 0 ranks.
7) You are given a suit of studded leathers.
8) A mentor or family member hands over a small family inheritance; it is a simple weapon of your choice.
9) Luck falls to you, as fate would have it, you are chosen by a distant relative to receive a masterwork martial weapon of your choice – not exotic.
10) Your mentor is very happy with your efforts and redoubles his, +2 on all abilities taught by that person this time.
11) A dryad asks you to pass onto Orick Faust a gift of thanks, a cure minor wounds (gnarled stick) wand, 10 charges. (this can only be rolled once)
12) Your glare is like death to others, as you grow people shrivel at that stare, Intimidate class skill, 0 ranks.
13) Time spent listening to the stories of others sinks in, Knowledge (Dungeoneering) class skill, 0 ranks.
14) A travelling band of halfling performers take a shine to your small efforts, Tumble class skill, 0 ranks.
15) Walking in the woods, you happen across an owlbear’s torn victim. His backpack contains 25 golds worth of Adventuring Gear (PHB Page 128) and a healer’s kit.
16) A friendly mage sets up life in a farm nearby and since you helped him unpack he asks if you would like to be his part-time servant in the future. (this can only be rolled twice)
17) A dryad or satyr grabs you and takes you away from the village for a month, gain +1 Cha and +1 Wis from this maturing experience.
18) You find a golden ring in the woods. It looks valuable.
19) Sir Kuiper leaves for an extended trip to Verbobonc, every PC gains 10 gold. (this can only be rolled once)
20) In thanks for helping one of the tax collectors over a woman, he “forgets” your bill for the year, receive 10 gold and a favour from the collector.

I'll give everyone a day or so to deal with the end of the fight.

Then everyone can keep rping with whoever while we resolve the events table and then finish off the first two year training plans.

The majority of the events take place towards the end of the two years so do not effect your PC's training.

If it becomes a bit confusing let me know, but I'll try to keep everything clear.

As well as xp, certain characters did critical things (thanks in part to the dice). They get the following abilities which may help towards the various criteria they have to achieve. If they are skills outside the class that they want, don't worry, treat it as a bonus. A bonus that came from your ability under pressure.

Taya - can cast Daze once per day.
Nagy - gets Handle Animal as a class skill with 0 ranks
Vladimir - can cast Cure Minor Wounds a number of times per day, equal to his wisdom bonus
Korgoth - gets Simple Weapon (Club) as a proficiency.

The rest of you don't worry if you seem to get left behind there will be plenty of opportunities in the next adventure.
