Orick's Background:
He's curious because he's odd, and seemingly a host of contradictions. He often disappears when there's serious work to be done but can often be found at the shrine sweeping or helping out. Which is also odd because his father is priest of Wee Jas and not someone people in the town would think of disobeying. He's silly and incredibly childish, and yet other times (like when he's standing up for / or protecting his half sister Bethsemane) he seems extremely stoic, and acts like an unflappable pillar of support. He loves town (and often speaks of visiting a big city like Greyhawk) but is often seen in the forest climbing (and some say talking to) trees. When Orick was younger he made the acquaintance of a dryad. Orick was too young at the time to know fear or suspicion and so rather then running or hiding from the fey Orick strolled right up and started talking to her. Her name, Orick would learn, was Rhea and Orick didn't know it at the time, but she also was very young (by dryad standards). The two formed a strange bond, Orick lent his youthful confidence and exuberance, and she in turn taught him about nature (including how to talk to plants). Their friendship lasted till Orick was ten, Rhea simply disappeared, likely returning to the Fey world for the testing she had been fearing, but Orick was heart broken as she never said goodbye. Orick kept watch over her tree, tending it and talking to it until he could stand waiting for Rhea no longer. Orick decided to look in his father's library for any information on Rhea or this Court of Stars she kept speaking of. What Orick discovered amazed him. Rhea was a fey and the author of the book seem to think that fey were dangerous and powerful beings. Orick decided to keep his friend Rhea a secret from the others. Adults had a tendency to overreact. One day, when Orick was wandering through the woods he quite literally stumbled across a priest of Norebo. The man looked like an ordinary vagrant, dressed in old dirty cloths, until Orick spotted the wrist and leg shackles. The man had smashed and removed the chains but was unable to remove the solid metal cuffs. Orick was about to run but the man snatched him up, he wasn't trying to hurt Orick, but he was unwilling to let the boy run off this close to town. For a time the two sat in silence as the man tried to figure out what to do with the boy while he made his escape and Orick tried to figure out how to escape the man to alert the authorities. Then the man pulled out his holy symbol to ask for guidance. Orick's jaw dropped. The man caught Orick's surprise. "You know this symbol?" the man asked, "I didn't think that Norebo was well loved in these parts." "Of course I know him," Orick said, "he is the Stern Lady's lover." The man laughed. "I didn't think Wee Jas was well known in these parts either. There's no shrine to her anyways . . ." "We have one in my house," Orick said, "and mother says that father is a real important priest to Wee Jas in Greyhawk." "But that would mean . . ." the man swallowed hard, then, suddenly, he smiled, "I'm not just a follower of Norebo but a priest like your father. I'm on a holy pilgrimage to test my luck, and sadly, as you can see, I'm down right now, but I have a feeling my luck is about to change! The constabulary nabbed me a few towns back for cheating and running an illegal back ally gambling ring. I'm innocent of the first charge but not the second, unfortunately they took all my money to repay my victims, and then laid out a ton of new charges and fines. They were going to send me to a labor camp to work off my debt, but I escaped. Now I need to get these fetters off so I can get back to my pilgrimage . . . and you're going to help me." "Me?" Orick gasped, "but father said . . ." "Yes you," the man smiled, "you're a follower of Norebo like me, even if you don't know it yet, and you're going to perform this holy duty for the Father of Chance. Now heres what I need you to do . . ." Orick, agaist his better judgment, helped the man, and as a parting gift the priest gave Orick his silver holy symbol. For some reason the priest's words stuck with him. 'You're a follower of Norebo' he had said, and slowly Orick began to realize it was true. From that day forward Orick has began trying to learn all he can about Noebo in hopes that one day he might better serve his god. With no priest or even followers in town Orick this has been a difficult task. Lately Orick has begun to think that he might need to become a priest of Norebo just so he can spread the word of his god. Description:
