I've even popped around the WotC board and people are asking questions about it and such, but they just aren't geeked out like we are.
(woot! conversation that distracts from the waiting... well momentarily anyways)
I think there are quite a few reasons for the difference in excitement. I was interested and watched developments on 4.0 when it was announced, and I still have 4.0 core on order, for completeness's sake if nothing else, but I'm much more interested in Pathfinder myself. Thinking about why this might be...
- 4.0 changes the fundamentals of the game. This is a problem because they're attaching the old name onto a new product. This will always create a certain amount of resentment and confusion, and honestly can't be avoided without losing an iconic brand name. The loss of Gnomes, the changing of class archtypes, these all cause pain in certain segments of the community. And we all know how much more likely malcontents are to speak up than those that are merely content. :)
- 4.0 changes are black box. We have to take them or leave them. We have no control, not knowledge of what's coming up, and it's frustrating and annoying. What if our vision doesn't match the designers'? What if our games are different from the designers' games - and thus our games are rendered unplayable undesirable under the new system? Paizo's decision to do public alpha and beta testing was, in some ways, very masochistic. Lookit these boards and you'll see why! ^_- But it was also a huge community building exercise - and keeps talking about the upcoming product at a fever pitch. We've had a year to speculate on 4.0 - with little feedback and info - this necessarily burned out the excitement and eagerness many initially felt. I know that, plus some nasty comments by WotC personnel on how women are genetically predisposed not to like RPGs, and the inherent conclusion that it's silly to try to interest women have dampened my enthusiasm for 4.0 to the point where the only reason I hesitated in cancelling my order of 4.0 is I know my fellow players in my local community aren't jerks like the trolls that frequent WotC forums are.
- 4.0 is new and scary - and influenced by changes in popular culture that many don't appreciate. The elephant of World of Warcraft. I actually like World of Warcraft, especially the capabilities of Tank classes - and I want to play martial classes with those capabilities in D&D ( <3 CRUSADERS! <3 ) - but I know it causes consternation in others. Another aspect of this is fundamental changes in old, familiar and well loved campaign worlds.
In the end, I think Paizo is putting forth an insane amount of work to cater to a loyal community - and I intend to reward that behavior as much as I can afford to, because I want to encourage it. I'm sure there will be house rules made, preferences for rules changes not chosen, and complaints we can all make aplenty, but I think this is an awesome chance, a great opportunity, and an exciting product I can't wait to find out more about.
....
Now to see if Alpha 3's out yet. Hopefully I distracted us all long enough to avoid overloading the webservers for a bit!

Some of the members of my gaming group have posted all over the place some adds for starting up a 4e campaign just to try it out and no one has bitten at all. When they did the same thing for Savage Tide there were so many inquiries that people had to be turned away due to space and time limitations. For as much hubbub as there is around 4e, no one really seems that eager to play it. Not even on ENworld, which is arguably the most pro-4e community online (aside from WotC, but they don't count).
I must admit that I am in love with the artwork for fourth edition. That's about the only thing that I like about it so far. However, I like the Pathfinder artwork better. When is Alpha 3 coming out?

That is not a worg. That is something that a company with no concern for their fanbase is forcing on them as a worg. That and the 4E mechanics is why I am anxiously awaiting my PRPG Alpha 3 update.
On pins and needles!

That != Graypelt.
NEED ALPHA 3!

That can't be Greypelt.
We have a very nice picture of Greypelt. I showed it to my players last night, just before they killed him.
One of them took the hide, so they have proof that Greypelt looks like a wolf, not somekind of lizard.
Hey, it could make a nice mount for a kobold.

Well crap, thats not for another 3 hours then! How will we ever survive?!!?!?!!
I know lets each say what we are most looking forward out of Alpha 3. For me its the new Bard, I've always loved the feel of a bard.
I'm looking forward to their take on the monk. The "master of combat maneuvers" comment in another thread really peaked my curiosity... :)
Your Friendly Neighborhood Dalesman
"Bringing Big D**n Justice to the Bad Guys Since 1369 DR"

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That means that I have to wait another 2 hours and 45 minutes. Curse you Jason and the Pathfinder staff!
My college History advisor was named David Frye. One letter off. Also on the opposite side from Washington (CT) and a closet D&D player...
weird.

The ranger. I have found that I usually play a ranger best and like the feel of the class. Since I have generally like the way that Pathfinder has reworked the classes so I'm waiting to see how they have changed my favorite class.

Reading the messages posted here, I have come to realize that there are a lot of people outside of the US eagerly awaiting Alpha 3. Does anybody know percentages of where people are from that are playing/reading Pathfinder? Just curious what the demographics look like.
I'm from South Dakota, USA.
BTW you don't have to post where you are from, I was just curious. And thought that this may be a good topic to burn through three hours of waiting.

My thought was that if there was ever a class that was overdue a fix, its Bard.

Orlando, Florida, USA for me
I can't say there isn't anything that I'm not looking forward to in A3. I love Monks, I'm honestly curious about the changes to Ranger. I guess I /could/ care less about bards.
The conversion rules and the Monster Creation rules seem to be one of the things I would like to see most.
2 hours and 20 minutes left.

(For those who don't know, europe uses what you call military time). When speaking, how do you say that? Like "Eighteen thirty" or what?
I wish the US did use the 24hr clock it would save alot of headaches with AM/PM mix ups.
You made me think about it and we are actually using both... somehow.
Our digital clocks (and all written times) use military time, but our "analog" clocks (you know the one which the small and the big pointers) are naturally 12 hours a full round.
Actually, we use both military and am/pm to name the time, but we just don't SAY AM/PM, since... Honestly, when do you NOT know if it's before or past midday (Other than near polar circle?)
