Path Master or Game Master?

Alpha Playtest Feedback General Discussion

I was thinking about this earlier... would the uhm... guy running the game be simply referred to as the Game Master, aka the common generic term, or would it be flashier to call them the Path Master?

What's everyone's input on this?

Likewise, wonder how the books would be titled and if there will be a core 3?

Scarab Sages

On a related note, what is the name of the guy who heads up the local chapter of the Pathfinders (in game)? A venture captain? Is there anyway to work that into the DM's title?

Captain Master or Master Captain? I could live with either one as an official game title. :D

I like the sound of Pathmaster but it is something that would have to catch on versus gamemaster which most already know. As far as 3 core books I doubt it. It has been said that the PRPG book will stand in for the PHB and DMG so Core two maybe? I personally would love to see a Paizo core monster Manual.

I think practicaly every game excpet one uses the term gm. I think let's stick to that and not try to emulate this one exception.

I can think of at least three exceptions: Judge, Storyteller, and Dungeon Master.

And from my perspective, as Dungeon Master was first, i have always thought of Game Master as being the exception. :)

The Exchange

Honestly, I've never payed attention to other game systems that have different names for the guy behind the screen. Lets just stick to Game Master.

There's Narrator, too. And Holmeister. Yes, I used meister instead of master on purpose.

I assume Dungeon Master is trademarked and cant be used?
Shame.

If you cant use DM I think good ol' Game Master is fine.

I was thinking Master Guide, since the GM is technically guiding the overall story. I agree GM is too generic and predominately used in that way. Pathfinder needs to set itself apart from the other games.

Another choice could be Guide Captain.

GM.

DM forever!

I agree that game master is too generic and that Pathfinder needs to set apart from other games. Pathmaster is OK for me, it reminds of the good old DM while retaing the unique flavour of the Pathfinder game and world.
Venture Captain and related variants on the other side are too in-game and not immediately recognizable by newcomers.

Don't forget "KEEPER OF ARCANE LORE!" (From Call of Cthulhu!)

I believe we'll be sticking with Game Master for the Pathfinder RPG though. And the plan is to only have the one core book, which will essentially combine the PH and the DMG into one big book. I doubt there'll be monsters in there, though, and if there ARE, there certainly won't be a lot. I'm pretty sure that we'll be doing regular monster books somewhere down the line, is what that means...

Scarab Sages

the Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel games use "Director".

Stick to Game Master. There's a reason it's the standard.

Pathfinder describes a player, not a DM, at least in my opinion.

I have no problem with the good old dungeon master, but I don't know whether PF could use it.

How about the Heir to Gygax?

Or He Who brings about TPKs

Or He Who We throw Cheetos At

I would also add He Who is in Need of a Shower but everybody at my gamming table smells lovely

Is Dungeon Master trademarked?

I believe so, yes.

That shortens to KOAL, and that sounds like some Mortal Kombat character. Like, some guy dressed all in black, still smoldering who uses a lot of fire/heat based stuff to boil people's blood.

If I go with KOAL, will I have to cry FINISH HIM when I deliver crits to player characters? I could live with that (they couldn't)

Down the line? Isn't PFRPG supposed to replace 3.5? You need those monsters for that. Adventures refer to them all the time. And someone who wants to make his own adventures needs something to throw at his enemies.

Nobilis uses the term 'Hollyhock God'.

So Dungeon Master is trademarked, copyrighted, whatever.

I bet Duneon Meister isn't. Shows that if you play PFRPG, you're way cooler than those D&D dorks. You're a meister! ;-)

To get down a path, don't you need a Guide?

A Pathfinder Guide.

No reason to change something if Paizo is using DM already. I do think that the idea of a Path Guide is cool and should be used else where down the line.

Done some too-heavy drinking last night? Shouting soup? Praying to the porcelain idol? Calling (B)Jörg?

I'd call "it's copyrighted and Paizo may not use it" a reason :P

Get them for free on my keyboard. äöüÄÖÜ. I also get ß. All with no additional charge. :P

I'd like to see a Paizo reprint of the MM, with Golarion fluff to fill in for things gutted from the SRD. The reason is simple: Once the MM is off store shelves (not long now), people will need a reference book that is available.

How about, "Death Facilitator"?

I personally like "Referee" as I get to wear the cool striped outfit and red card my players when they go around headbutting npcs.
