Whould anybody be intrested in a PvP gladiator type game?

I think it would be cool to have a "fight club" type group. People (or teams) in the group could challenge each other and have thier match moderated by an "Arena Master."

Each player would have a persistant character and would earn XP by defeating rival players in the arena. Each match would take place on the same map. Of course this needs a lot of people to work. If any one wants to help, let me know.

I'll start a test game to see if this game type is any fun.

I need two teams of four (or at least an even number if I can't get that many people).

- 32 point buy (please use Invisible Castle)
- Core books only
- no monster races
- 200gp starting gold

I'd be willing to give it a shot as long as its a PbP on this site. If so, enter Raurik 'Shins' Strakeln, Dwarven Fighter!

Here
are my stats from Invisible Castle. Do you want all rolling done there? Nothing out of the Complete Warrior? Oh well. Will post a character in Raurik's alias ASAP. Would it be possible to throw in some interesting terrain and situations s there would be elements of tactical scenarios? I really love coming up with tactical plans in the D&D world.

hehe might be funner if we all played our avatars; course; I predict Ultradan as the winner; him being super and a hero and all; wonder how fast peoples profile pages would change :)

I wanna play, count me in.

Arctaris, I know he want us to use the point by system for our stats and then use invisible castle for the rest of the rolls we do. If that any help.

Ok. Raurik should be done and posted in the alias my Thursday evening.

Awesome count me in! First time i have ever used point system, but i can do it. What level 1st?

Here are mine here will put up alise soon.

Character:Aldrin Dolkin, Human fighter

I would be glad to help, i just will be away for the 20th for 9 days.

The Exchange

Count me in! I will make a player and post stats soon.

I'm not sure he won't be home til late at night. I guessing probably 1st so we can advance after so many fights.

Thanks :), just have a problem when i make an alise, it would let me click save changes, so i will just post or e-email my stats to vissigoth

That would be cool he'll be able to help yeah better that way.

I am getting Cashmere the Dwarven Druid created.
Stats before racial mods are here.
After racial mods looks like this:
STR-14
DEX-14
CON-16
INT-10
WIS-16
CHA-8

more to come.

Well they look like good stats. He'll probably repost sometime between 2am and 4am. I'm his wife. I don't know alot about D&D, but I know how he thinks. So some things I can help own.

Count me in as well. I'll be playing Jacyn the (Generalist) Gray Elf Wizard. If Gray Elf is not allowed, he will instead be a Halfling (or Gnome).

Stats

Str 6 (8-2 racial) - 0 points
Dex 16 (14 + 2 racial) - 6 points
Con 12 (14 - 2 racial) - 6 points
Int 20 (18 + 2 racial) - 16 Points
Wis 12 - 4 points
Cha 8 - 0 Points

Will post more later.

Cashmere rides a Bactian Camel(2-humped, 10'less speed, 16 con) as a mount. Camela is decked out in leather barding, a military saddle, and Cashmere!

Cashmere wears hide armor and light wooden shield, carrys a scimatar, 3 clubs and 2 spears as his weapons, and a few other "items" that I would like to keep to myself for the competitions.

Where do I post a complete sheet for review?

FH

Can we get a bit more information regarding the "rules" for this extravaganza?

Like what the arena will be like?
What happens when you die?
Where in the Arena do you start?
Is Pre-Buffing allowed?
Does the Arena provide us with room and board, or does that come out of our own pocket?
Do we get cash (as well as XP) for defeating our foes? (So we are in line with Wealth by Level)
Will we just be fighting other PC's? Or Monsters as well?

Also, who is going to "referee" each combat? Are you taking volunteers? Or are you going to do them all?

I realise you may not have thought through many (or even any) of these questions, and there are probably more to ask, but I figure they are a good place to start.

Oh yeah, Jacyn is ready to go. Just let me know where to send the character sheet for verification.

Liberty's Edge

Ok. Sorry about being so vague before, but I wanted to gauge intrest in this project before I burnt up too many of my spare brain cells on it. I will run the first game, then finalize the rules and post them on my website. I'll be asking for volenteers for Arena Masters (Arena Masters will be able to play too). And please excuse any spelling or grammar errors. It's late and I'm trying to get this finished so I can go to bed.

Here is what I have so far:

Character Creation
-Starting level: 1st
-32 point buy (please put a link to your stats in your character profile)
-Core books only (I'd like to get this thig up and running, then we'll discuss adding other stuff later. This includes sub-races and monster races.)
-200 gp starting gold. You can buy whatever you can afford and bring in any thing you can carry (or drag). If you buy a mount, make sure it is stated out in your character sheet.
-Players can e-mail thier character sheets to me at Vissigoth@aol.com (once this thing gets underway, it will be the Arena Master's responsiblity for collecting and approving the character sheets.)
-The character sheets should be in a standardized format for ease of use between Arena Masters. (Check one of my PbP characters for the format I like. If anybody has one they think is better, let me know. It doesn't matter what format we use as long as everybody uses the same one.)

Setting up Matches
-Characters will be organized into four factions:
--The Blue Faction will be Lawful Good
--The Green Faction will be Chaotic Good
--The Yellow Faction will be Lawful Evil
--The Red Faction will be Chaotic Evil
--Characters alignments must be withing one step of thier Factions alignment. (Ex. Blue Faction characters can be LG, LN, NG, or TN.)
(For this first test game there will be only two teams: Red and Blue, alignment doesn't matter for this first game.)
-Each team will start in thier respective corner of the Arena.(The Arena will be roughly circular. I'll draw out a map later. If anyone else wants to draw a map, that would be cool. We'll look at them all and decide which ones we like the best.
-Players may have as many characters as they like, and may play in as many matches at a time as they like. However, players may have only one character in any one match at a time.
-All dice rolls should be made with Invisible Castle. Players should link to thier rolls in thier posts. (to prevent any accusations of cheating)

During the Match
-The match starts with Initiative rolls for all players.
-The players then enter combat as normal. There is no pre-game buffing.
-Every 3 rounds, Initiative is rerolled (to keep the game interesting).
-The match is over when all the players of one team are at -10hp.
-If a player leaves the bounds of the arena, they are imeadeatly disqulified. This includes any kind of planar travel.(I'm not too versed on the rules involving planar travel, but I've read in some D&D fiction about mages shifting to the "Shadow Plane" which is partailly on our plane. If some one more knowledgable about planar travel could give me an explanation of this that would be great. My first thought would be that this kind of thing would be ok since the character was still mostly in the Arena.)

After the Match
-The winning team is awarded EXP as is normal for the CRs of the opposing team. EXP penalties for multi-class characters apply. (ex. a battle between two teams of four 1st level characters would award the winning team 300 EXP each)
-If the player increase in level after a match, then they recive a gp increase to put them at the wealth standard for thier new level.
-I'm debating on giving the losing team an EXP penalty. Mabey losing half of the EXP that the winning team gained (in the above example, the losing team would lose 150 EXP). Let me know what you guys think about this.
-All players are brought back to life and all consumable items are replenished.
-Characters can reconfigure thier equipment and prepared spells between matches; as long as the new configuration doesn't exceed the gp limit for the characters level.
-Players will post a "Match Summary" at the bottom of thier character sheets (with the Arena Master's name, the outcome of the match, and EXP awarded) and resubmit them to the Arena Master. (I'll keep all of the character sheets on my hard drive.)

If anybody has any ideas or critisizims, throw them out. I want to have standardized rules across all matches, and I want players to be able to play a character in one match, then take that same player to another match, with another Arena Master and be able to play with no trouble.

This game isn't going to focus on RP much, just combat. Players shouldn't worry about upkeep or buying food or anything.

Also, Kadrenis is my wife, so she might be able to explain things a little better if I'm not available. She's kind of new to D&D, but she knows how I think.

For the first game we have:
Arctaris with a dwarven fighter
Kadrenis
AWED with a human fighter
Fake Healer with a dwarven druid
mevers with a wizard

We need atleast one more so we can have even teams. I'd like to have two teams of four, with each of the character archtypes represented on each team. We need another divine, another arcane, and two stealth characters. Also what teams are you guys on Red or Blue.

Sovereign Court

This sounds interesting.

What are the dimensions of the arena, and how far apart do the opponents start? Do these conditions change from match to match?

We could just figure an arena of 100'X50' in an 8 sided configuration with the 2 far ends being 20' wide and the 2 long sides being 70' long

I got an idea. Use one of the arenas from a previous Dungeon magazine, and say that's your arena.

Ditto.

Regarding the arena; a lot of it depends on whether you want to allow long-range spells and/or ranged weapons. If you do, you're going to want a 200-300 foot long space between entry points. Makes a big map, but it allows the greatest number of options.

Personally, I'd make the map around 250x150...in fact, I think I'd made one in the past...

Ah, here it is.

There is a good one in issue 96 of Dungeon Magazine (Pg 36, plus I think they made a poster map of an arena either for this issue or for the Age of Worms issue where they fought in the arena).

I like either one.

Ah, here it is.

Link not working.

The arena size in Dungeon 96 is only 100'x70', and I think that 250x150 is way too big. Any battles would be strictly ranged in an arena that size and a massacre for most melee types. That size only favors ranged and spellslinging combat. Something more intimate is in order here IMO.
I like the 100x70 or maybe a little bigger like 150x100(although that still strikes me as big for an arena).

Can't edit...and I forgot a folder.

Arena

The problem with smaller arenas is that they favor the melee character. At least, in my opinion and experience. If you're going to be starting within a single charge of your opponent, would *you* want to make a spellcaster or archer?

For single person combats that is true, however, these are 4 on 4 combats and, like in the dungeon, some group tactics will be needed to protect each member so that each one can contribute to the fight before being slain. An arena that big makes melee-types unusable except for either absorbing archer attacks or they can close for combat while the archers and/or mages in their group get eradicated by the other side's archers/mages and a group of all archers and mages is gonna destroy all the melee types before they can close the distance, while still picking off the opposing archers/mages.

IMO

I sent you a jpg of an arena that I just whipped up, Vissi.
I would like to know what you think. I was also hoping you would know of somewhere to post it for viewing by the peoples on the thread.

Aldurin Dolkin the Chaotic Evil fighter ready to fight! can't find a good alise pic, will draw a pic of Aldurin soon.

Liberty's Edge

I bid 10,000 quatloos on Aldurin.

Liberty's Edge

Uploaded the Arena map onto my site here.

With one on one fights, smaller arenas are better for fighters, larger arenas are better for archers or spellcasters. With team fights, the players should start behind some kind of cover, with the fighters able to close the distance in one or two rounds. I think this map is perfect for what we need. Props go to Fake Healer for the map.

Nice map Fake Healer, Here is a quick draw up i did of a map(i was bored), while it is raining, so here is the map, it is just a sketch, and the legend it told on the bottom.

I am getting prepped to go to my weekly game tonight so I won't be around until around 11P EST, so if teams are picked just throw me on one. I don't wanna miss a thing! Especially since my enemies shall all know the dread of being trampled under camel toes!
;P
FH (sorry, too funny to resist)

Teams probably wont get picked till way later tonight or tomorrow afternoon. So you're ok. I'm playing a halfling rogue.

Well here he is,the one and only Aldurin Dolkin Picture. Now you can see what he looks like. :)

Why is he doing the Vulcan salute with his right hand?!

Liberty's Edge

Ok, so far the teams are:

Blue Team
Artaris: Raurik 'Shins' Strakeln, Dwarven Fighter
Kadrenis: Lidda Tealeaf, Halfling Rogue
mevers: Jacyn, Halfling (or Gnome) Wizard
The Blue team needs a divine caster

Red Team
AWED: Aldrin Dolkin, Human fighter
Fake Healer: Cashmere, Dwarven Druid
The Red team needs an arcane caster and a sneak.

If anyone is not happy with the team they are on, let me know.

Arctaris wrote:

... *looking back at picture* oh,... i didn't know, thanks Arctaris.

What i wanted the right hand to show was his scars from battle, but i put a glove over it... it was just a random thing,

I fancy a go - how about a cleric for the team which doesn't have one. I'm thinking Hextorian - hey, you won't find Pelor or Hieroneous in anything as squalid as a pit fight. Am I in?

Edit: Aargh! The Blues are Lawful Good. Am I going to have start the LE team, now?

Edit 2: Heehee - just seen that the first fight can be any alignment. Those weedy goodie-two-shoes will just have to put up with me.

The Exchange

BTW, team, I may be a divine caster but don't be expecting any healing! I intend to mix it up with Camela.
Vissi, I sent you an updated arena with changes implemented per your instructions. Let me know what you think.

That is fine by me Fake Healer, Aldurin has everything he needs.

I'll draw a pic of the winner. Prizes, hooray! :D

BTW, Raurik is vaguely psyocopathic. There's a reason his nickname is Shins.
