I'd like to see:
- More information about the world you're developing
- More information about the deities (in particular, the options a PC cleric would be choosing among)
- Lots and lots of Designer Notes about the decision-making process as you developed the world

I'm STILL trying to drum up support for a Modern Item Cards set. So far, I have a vocal minority (a tiny vocal minority) backing me up. Now if I could just turn that into a vocal less-tiny minority... ;D

Varisia is mid magic. Standard D&D level of magic, more or less. Psionics are not an innate part of the setting, but they are certainly an option, and I wouldn't be surprised to, say, see certain psionic monsters that are in the SRD (such as old favorites like the intellect devourer or the thought eater) show up now and then.Woah. Neothelids are in the SRD! Interesting...
Anyway... all 11 base classes will have things to do in Pathfinder adventures.
That bums me out, especially since it is contained within the SRD. I would love to see some psionics content.

Like, oh, I don't know...That the unaccnounted-for 12th iconic is a Psion? Unless you have a Specialist and non-specialist wizard in there, that's gonna be the 12th. I mean, it sure isn't going to be a Psionic Warrior with no Psion.

So if Varisia is the country's or the continent's name, what is the world itself called? Take my suggestion: Poerth.
Also, what is the name of the campaign setting (e.g. "Forgotten realms")??? Is it Pathfinder? I don't get it.
We're not quite ready to release the name of the world itself or the name of the campaign setting. We've got some names that we're probably 98% happy with... but untill we hit 100%, mum's the word!

Awwwww c'mon James...just tell em: It's "Shizzibumps...world of Happy Jaunt." I don't think you guys can get more 100% than that James. ;-)

I first want to say that I really love the work that you all have done, and continue to do, although I hate to see the end of an era I wish you all the best with Pathfinder and all the other things you may have planed, you have my support as long and as much as I am able, and I hope that this new era will be a golden one for us all. I know you all are excited about this new path you are set upon and I am excited for you.
May God bless you all and let your days end with success.
I did vote on finding more about the world itself but I must say I really would like to know more about the demons/gods of the world. I would also like to know if or when you create the demons/gods of your world will they be beyond the challenge of mortals or will they have reason to fear a mortal that grows in enough power?
Saern |
I was going to ask about the real name of the world, but I see that's already been addressed.
I, for one, applaud the lack of psionics. I hate them; they make me froth at the mouth, and I know that I will be replacing just about anything psionic with a normal magic alternative.
Also, I see some comments floating around calling for something in this world along the lines of "modern" or highly alternative at least, and I have top say "NO!" Kudos to Paizo for having the good sense to avoid that.
I, for one, am an avid purist when it comes to sword and sorcery. I have no interest in d20 Modern, and if there are going to be lasers or technology, run d20 Future; but leave it out of D&D! (even though you lost the liscence, it's still D&D in all but name) Now, I'll add some inconsistency and say I like Ethergaunts with their wierd technology thing, but it's their gimmick and it's extremely marginal and, because of the rest of "what they are," it works.
If you want to make something that veries from the standard sword and sorcery, that's fine, make your world that way. But that market is both too small to sustain things like Pahtfinder and a great deal of people, particularly young gamers like myself, vastly prefer sword and sorcery style games.
Well, there's my mini rant of the day.

Will the PDFs include a printer friendly version of the book along with the on screen version?
The PDF version, I believe, will be identical in presentation and layout to the print version. I doubt we'll really have the time or resources to put up multiple versions of the PDF. That said... I'm pretty sure that you'll be able to do the copy-paste trick with the text into a word document and then print out just the words.

I will request at least one change from the print versions: Please, please, please, include un-marked maps like th Dungeon PDF supplements.

I'll see what we can do. If we DO offer untagged maps, they won't be in the PDFs, though. They'll likely be a seperate download.
That's fine with me: It's what I had to do with my Dungeon maps anyway. Thank you. It's hard work to hide secret doors and photoshop out red trap squares!

Actaully... I can more or less guarentee that we won't be able to provide maps that hide traps and secret areas. That requires more than just placing something on a layer that can be turned off. That basically requires a second map, which basically requires us paying the cartographer twice for each map (or at least 1.5 times).
Ross Byers RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32 |
Really? Most of the maps in the Dungeon supplements for the Age of Worms had the hidden dorrs replaced by blank walls, so I assumed it was easy enough.
Since it seems that you did have to pay the cartographers extra for that, I thank you a great deal. Running Vecna's Labyrinth would have been impossible without the unmarked map.

I caught the earlier comment about the 11 core classes being supported by content, but I haven't been able to find a mention yet of races. Is the racial makeup of this new world going to be similar to the core world? Will there be any over-arcing elements of racial tensions, etc? I like it when the different races really have an effect on the story, so the racial choice is important, beyond "I'm a dwarf because I want to be able to see in the dark."
On a similar note, I would also be curious about the planar cosmology (or lack of one, if that's the case), to determine if Planescape-ish racial choices (genasi, etc.) are appropriate.
By the way, this business move rocks! I was on the verge of cancelling my subscriptions, but you've won me back 100%!
James Jacobs Creative Director |
Our world's base races are the same as the core; human, elf, dwarf, halfling, gnome, half-elf, half-orc. Any overarcing elements of racial tensions and what not will be tied to the adventures, if they occur. In fact, the setting is going to be primarilly driven by the needs of the adventures, similarly to how 1st edition worked. But yeah, there WILL be new flavor elements to the races here and there.
Genasi aren't in the SRD, so we can't use them. Tieflings and aasmiar are, though, and we WILL be using them. We're also likely to pick up new races from other OGL sources, and will certainly be inventing some of our own in time.

But mephits are OGC, along with 3 of the 5 genies (how I wish dao and marid were OGC too), so creating alternatives to mephlings and genasi shouldn't be too tough.
Over at the Oriental Adventures forum of WotC, there's a petition thread to make OA material OGC. It's not likely to happen anytime soon, but if it were, the races there (hengeyokai, korobokuru, spirit folk, vanara - I don't know if the nezumi is trademarked by AEG) would be nice to use if Pathfinder's world has an exotic land.

That would be cool, although we're already looking at ways to support those who prefer their games with a decidedly Asian feel. :)

NINJAS?!
I've played with the idea a little. The problem is, until recently I'd never seen a kitsune done in a way that wasn't just a sucky fox-headed human. I actually like how kitsune are done in InuYasha, of all things.
I'm actually working on my own kitsune. The trick, in my opinion, is not to simply make the human more foxlike (i.e. "sucky fox-headed human"), but to start with the fox and only add the human features you need. I'll let you know when I'm done. :)
Inuyasha is just a great source of material, period. :)

Most importantly though, I am excited about the prospect of fantasy asia that doesn't stop at Japan.
China, Burma, Thailand, Mongolia, India, Indonesia, and all of the amazing cultural mythos that could be melded into a fantasy asia unlike any other. That would rock. And it will rock.
Yes. A thousand times yes.
I admit that I'm an anime geek and such. But I'm really tired of Oriental meaning 'Japanese'. Let's see something set in the Middle Kingdom, India or someplace else in Asia and southeast Asia.
Mongolian style hobgoblins. Wuxia fighting styles. Crazy Shaolin (yeah, I know we already have monks, but there's gotta be more potential) antics. Mandarins! The Celestial Beauracracy!
Ahem. Sorry, got a bit carried away. Needless to say: I'm all for it. It's a big world you're building. I bet there's space for a decidedly asiatic feel without disrupting the rest of it.

He's still got a good point. Most of the Oriental stuff that shows up in D&D is largely centered around Japanese history and folklore more than any other area of Asian history. While this is fine and cool, there's a lot of untapped mythology and settings that could be used to great effect in D&D games - and I'm sure it has been.
The Indian Subcontinent alone has a huge mass of history, invasion, barbarian hordes, empires and -monsters-.
And don't even get me started on China. There's masses of stuff - it'd be nice to see the good folks at Paizo tap into that and give us all a new spin on the idea of 'Oriental'.

The biggest things I want to know, are the setting and pantheon details. A very close second in that respect for me is any info on expanded spell lists from what is in the OGL. Obviously we can use Spell Compendium and the like for our home games, but it would be cool if there were new spells added by Paizo to give their NPC's and like a less "generic" feel. One of the things I have loved best about the AP's is how you guys make liberal use of classes, spells, prc's, etc. that aren't just in the PHB and DMG. So I really would like to be reassured that you guys have a plan to create some new base classes and PRC's to fill the void left by all the non OGL material that you have lost access to. I would even commit to buying sourcebooks from you guys if it will be supported in your Pathfinder AP's going forward. I will enjoy sourcebooks that have crunch and fluff that actually appears in the adventures I am running than I will books that have cool stuff but never see the light of day in an adventure.
Just my 2 cents. I fully beleive you guys are going to have an amazing product and I intend to subscribe, but I do have some concerns about what will happen on the creative side of things with such a smaller pool of resources to build from, and the fear that Pathfinder might lose some of it's old school "D&Dness" compared to the earlier AP's in Dungeon. You guys have the best designers in the industry, so I know you will have some great stuff, but I would love to hear something about the sorts of things that are in the works on the "improving our source material" side of things.

Heh... Loguey. Dang, Nick! Did you get teased as a kid?
Nah! Logue sounds like Rogue...go figure. ;-)
I do like me some Asia. Years in China and my M.F.A. has taught me there is TON more possibilities to fantasy Asia than just anime and L5R. Not that anime isn't awesome...but there is a lot more to draw on.
Ed Healy Contributor |

True. Unfortunately, I've found it difficult to put together a campaign with a decidedly "oriental" flavor. Forget about the players who want to throw in their "half-dragon troll blah blah blahs." I can keep them at bay. I'm talking about the cultural mindset one needs to overcome to truly enjoy one of those games. Most people can't do it.
But some can, and it would be great if Paizo takes the opportunity to really show some brilliance in this area. Besides, even a patch-work dungeon romp in Munchkin Dungeon could benefit from the inclusion of toenayar and kokura.

Pathfinder will be available through the Esdevium distribution company, which I believe is the largest game distributor in Britain. I suspect it will also be sold to other game distributors there, but I'll leave the specifics to our sales guy. It wouldn't hurt to bug your game store manager so that he asks for it from his sales rep, though. The more "buzz" like that we can develop for this product, the more likely it will be successful. --Erik
Thanks for your reply Eric... In the Town i live in - in Britain, we have several Major news retailers.. Borders, Waterstones, WHSmiths and a comic\figure\graphic shop etc... unfortunately, none of them sell Dragon or Dungeon! It may be worth getting your 'sales guys' to try and get these major retailers to have it in stock... (i believe Borders are an american retailers aswell)
I think i may have to subscribe from an online store... (as i do now) and then straight from you guys when it runs out.

I must agree with the vile infant there, Indonesia in particular is an amazing place and would make an incredible fantasy location - with lots of volcanoes, jungles, things in the night, swarms, bugs, wierd birds, lizards, monsters and badness. Variation from time to time is cool.
