WOW a thread with the sole purpose of being mean and insulting, talking crap about game settings and the creators of those settings, the new and different things they bring to D&D, and how our players (or DMs) are ruining everything.
BOO HOO already. Grow up. Stop playing, or change it. Don't buy those optional books, but who cares if someone else does? Don't like this setting or that setting? Okay. But aside from "making you feel better" when you talk crap about it, what does it really accomplish... nothing. It is what it is. I used to allow 4d6 drop the lowest... stopped that when I got too many uber-players. Now it's point buy, and everyone is okay with that (in my game.) I've DM-ed in 2nd edition, 3rd edition, and now 3.5 no one held any sort of gun to my head when I willing bought the books and supplements I bought. Do I have lots of D&D merchandise. You bet'cha! Am I ever going to run enough games or play in enough games that I'll be able to utilize it all. No way. (It'd be a full time job just trying to.) I guess my rant is that I'm tired of all of these rants. They are more like excuses to say crappy things and sling insults. Great if you feel better afterwards, can we move on and talk about... oh I dunno... any-friggin'-thing else?
Well, if you don't want to rant, stay off the thread. It does what it says on the tin, so you can excercise your democratic right and not post. Personally, some of the stuff here is pretty stimulating. Maybe it is too much for you or something....

Two. You're rant sounds suspiciously close to one that I gave to a jehovas witness who came to my house a month ago.
Three. Why does anyone wanting to express an opinion against the united states government have to cover their ass with some token phrase first. "I support the troops" but I think the war is wrong. "I love my country" but I think it is starting to screw up a lot. "I love democracy" but our president is a chode.
And even with those words of protection half the time I express a negative opinion, no matter how well founded, I get stares from people as if they just watched me drop a deuce on the statue of liberty. I don't mind being argued with, or even proven wrong about my thoughts and opinions but I'd like to use my freedom of speech without feeling like I've committed treason!

As has been mentioned, the purpose of this thread is let out our vitriol and ire at things that are gettin' our goat, whether it's game-related, life events, work, school, whatevah. This is the Neutral Zone, the Demilitarized Zone, the Safe Haven. Rant freely, rant proudly.
My rant o' the day - my FLGS has gotten so lame that they no longer stock any RPG books of any kind, let alone keep up with the times. If I want to flip through the latest book, I have to go to Barnes and Noble.
Barnes & Noble!!! Instead of my FLGS!!! Rawr! Kaiju stomp!

I don't think we forced democracy down their throats. We just gave them a choice. Of course, we then advised them to set up a representative repbulic because, so far, that has proven to be the best form of government.
If that country wants it then they need to fight for it, a prize easily gained is diminished in worth. We fought for our ridiculously screwed up government, let them fight also.
That is the one big problem with all this. I don't think people in this country quite comprehend that most people in the Middle East don't seem to want freedom. Hell, I think the only country over there that has a big pro-democracy movement is Iran, and just look how well that is turning out.
Ha Ha! Take that! Watch as your legislative process becomes paralyzed with bi-partisanism, red tape, and special interest groups' personal agendas. That'll teach you to mess with ....whoever you may have messed with.......
To true. Sometimes I look around and think to myself, "No wonder they hate us." I mean, here is a country that has things like NAMBLA, and a huge drug problem, and corrupt politicians who would rather use tax-payer money to fund a "bridge to nowhere". It makes me think sometimes that maybe the best thing some super wealthy guy like Bill Gates could do is to use his resources to surround the planet in killer satellites whose only purpose is to prevent anything from leaving the planet. That way we can't infect alien races with our own distinct form of insanity.
I don't hate our country but I think it takes an arrogant pr*ck to believe everyone must follow our example. We have our problems too. I guess I'm one of those arrogant prick's. In my own defense, however, I don't think that other countries should follow all of our examples. Representitive Republic? Hell Yes! Separation of Church and State? Without a doubt! D&D? You bet your life! Playboy? Absolutely! Mighty Morphin Power Rangers? F%$@ no! These are just some of the things that make this country, in my own humble opinion, the greatest place on earth (for now anyway). If the folks in the Middle East just followed some of these examples, the world would be a much better place.

An actualy rant:
I hate that the Shadow dragon I threw at the party in our last session ever as a group together was so debilitating, but had so little damage potentional that it really wasn't all that scary. I hate that it had so little potential because I forgot power attack! I hate that I forgot to bring Libris Mortis, so I didn't have the stats for Skirr and had to use Wyverns instead, who were then vulernable to the shadesteel golem's negative energy pulse. I hate that the room I made was too small for Skirr to fly in effectively, and the wyverns turned out to be a godsend since they could maneuver. I hate that the encounter turned into a TPK, and the party didn't get to go on and fight the shadowcaster vampire, and that I still haven't gotten to use jovocs, palrethees, bebiliths, retrievers, abyssal drakes, hezrous, mezzoloths, or canoloths, all of which I had in store for the party last night!
I love that I decided to do a playtest-style "reset" and let them skip right to the final boss, a half-fiend warlock. We ran the encounter twice- in one, the warlock got impaled by a flying, Huge-sized rhinoceros and carried off into the skies of the Abyss. In the other, the sorcerer got to use the Staff of Power I had roled up, completely by random fall of the dice, as part of the dragon's treasure, and that he managed to use Telekinesis to deliver a Retributive Strike and get away alive. Ahh, an ending worthy of the last session!
Now to start the hunt for a new group. I need to take some of my downtime to really work on the setting, however. D&D goes on!

About the abilitys thing,I make my players total ability modifiers added together equal the number of players times 6 so if one PCs scores are good somebody has to have bad ones.
Maybe its the rolls. The system I use is quite generous: 4d6, drop the lowest, roll 3 full sets, take the best. I did this because the first campaign we ran, two players had enormous abilities, while everyone else languered in normalcy. So, I made a system that should even everyone out. But, those two STILL get super stats, even using that system, often with more than one 18, and everyone else, though super powered, can't match them. It's gotten to the point where if you don't have at least one 18 or two to three 17s, your character is considered useless! I thought they were cheating, but when I watched, they rolled the same things!
So, I try to switch to point-buy. Only one person in the group supports me, and even he bails after trying to make a character using it and not having enough abilities (using 28 points) to build his character as he would like (which is to say, to the Siperman standards of the group). So, I switch back to...

Reminds me of the clamor when "The Da Vinci Code" movie came out this year. I had to laugh at all those religious groups who saw it as a threat to Christianity and demanded people boycott the movie. Supposedly, many of these groups thought that people who saw the movie would believe that the details contained therein were TRUE.
They didn't want people to get suckered into believing a fictional story.
Is that irony or just coincidence?

Well, Sexi, a few funny looks beats being thrown in jail, or into a plastic shredder, or the ocean from a plane - I think you probably have plenty of free speech.
To answer FH, while I sort of take your point, I really don't buy this "They don't want democracy over there" stuff. A few violent nutters don't want democracy, the ordinary man on the street probably does want it. Who doesn't want stabilty, free speech and the rule of law. If there is gravitaion towards religious figures and militias it is because, in the absence os security, they offer some modicum of safety.
I hardly claim a deep insight into the Iraqi mind. But I remember a conversation on a train with a Somali guy, a religious teacher, who had been out there and claimed people didn't want democracy, but the "rule of God". He didn't like it much when I pointed out that that was really another form of despotism by someone who, unverifiably, claims to know what God thinks. Probably the ruler would be an Islamic teacher or someone like that. It suits a lot of people to claim that people don't want democracy out there - because it entrenches their own position of power.
Anyone who doesn't want democracy is either threatened by it, or doesn't know what it offers. Cultures differ all over, but democracy is a fairly basic idea that travels (Islamic democracies exist - Malaysia, Indonesia).
As a general point, if people don't want political rants can this be made clear? I personally find rants about dice a bit dull, but I'm happy to go with the majority (I'm democratic like that).

Aha! I caught one! :-)
1. We rescued two mountain goats from some giants, and they helped our ranger find the trail to a cave we were trying to get to. (In other words, our DM rescued us from the ranger's abominable Survival checks). The two gnomes in our party have been riding them, and we promised to take care of them in return for their help (Speak with Animal spell).
2. Yes, the dragon was still in the lair. But it was a Silver Dragon that we were performing a task for. Our cleric stayed behind to chat with the dragon when the rest of us went to finish cleaning out the caves we had previously killed a lich in (cleric's Player couldn't make it to the gaming session).
3. Strangely, it was a lot like the OotS strip where they forgot Durkon. We forgot to stop by the dragon's cave on our way back to the ship. In our favor, we are in kind of a time crunch to get the dragon's blood (which we got in return for the quest he gave us) back to town, and we were pretty beat up. But, it's still a pretty big mistake. (I didn't even realize it until I was updating my campaign journal the next day...and noticed something was missing). My bard was the acting cleric during that session...it sucks to run around healing everyone! And it almost got my character killed!

Uhhh... so if you have 6 players, the total ability modifier add up to 36? This could mean each player has 12s across the board, or an 18, a 14 and 4 10s. Does each player then only get +6 or are they allowed to fight for a bigger share of the pool somehow? Could one player's total modifiers add up to 10 and another one only get 2? How do you keep this system in check? I don't see how it could possibly work.

I hate the misuse of "literally."
Today I read the following in a book's introduction: "I literally galloped across the pages..." WTF?! The person was writing about how quickly they read a book they loved, but instead they wrote that they either 1) rode a horse across the book pages or 2) made a galloping motion across the book page. Oh, no wait, I get it, by using "literally," you are emphasizing how quickly you read it and applying it in the exact opposite way it should be used. What a cute way to frak up the English language. (side thought - how long will it be until "frak" starts getting filtered by BBS software?)
Other annoying uses lately:
"it's literally a thousand degrees outside" - that explains why my ice cream cone melted so quickly
"I literally died" - that explains why they smell funny
"His brains were literally coming out his nose" - Wait, that really happened. That'll teach him to get too close to the illithid.
Another side note - I did a quick search of "literally" on the message board here, and a perusal of the results showed that Paizo posters know how to use the word properly, which I expected. Most posts here are pretty well written (my few posts are exceptions).
My post number is the same as my extension at work. Interesting.

I hate Las Vegas drivers! We're a very fast growing city due to the relatively low cost of living here and lack of property taxes, not to mention the attraction of "Sin City" to many people. Consequently, we seem to get every other state's jack ass drivers. You can't maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you without some a-hole jumping in front of you or drive anywhere without being tailgated. Oh, and don't get me started on the bastards that instead of getting into the lane they need to be in to get on or off of the freeway, instead wait until the last minute to cut you off to get into that lane. And don't bother honking because all you get for your trouble is a one-finger-salute.

There was an episode of King of Queens where J. Garafalo played a woman who raised the hackles of all around her by qualifying almost every single observation with a misuse of 'literally'.
People misusing 'hopefully' and 'decimated', among other things, has always put this pedant into a straight jacket.
Getting a definition wrong, like decimate, is one thing... but forgetting the grammatical purpose of an adverb for some inexplicable reason itches the itch of ancients.
Hopefully, people will stop misusing hopefully. J/K. With any luck, I mean to say.

I hate the treasure system in D&D. I hate how the DMG basically says that any creature of CR X will possess Y treasure. Take a wraith for example. CR 9 creature (I believe). If the party succeeds in killing the wraith, the DMG assumes that the wraith MUST be guarding a treasure worth so many GP. In my games, you know what the wraith is guarding? His tomb! Unless this is the wraith of a potent spellcaster or a noble of some sort, opening his tomb is going to reveal the following: a dead body (possibly only skeletal remains), some tattered burial garments, and lots of dust. If you're lucky, there might be a wedding band or something in there.
I do not reward treasure by CR. I completely ignore most of the things they include in the Monster Manual statblocks after the BAB and skills section (though I do still pay attention to tactics and environment). Consequently, my games tend to be underpowered by equipment standards. If the characters develop a strong need for money, they seek well-paying quests or go after dungeons in search of wealth. 9 times out of 10, wealth is not the motivating factor of the parties I DM for. Most of the time, there's some greater good (or evil, on rare occassion) to be accomplished and monetary wealth is far from a concern of the heroes. I had a group of 4 players enter the Underdark at level 11 and between the four of them, there were 5 magic items, the most potent of which were a +1 metalline bastard sword and a pair of gloves of Dexterity +2. The fights were hard, brutal, and often ended with serious injuries but you know what? They survived and the challenge was what made it so much fun for all of us. After they crawled out of the Underdark, they had acquired a wand of fireballs that only had 12 charges left in it. That was it. Maybe a handful (20 or so) of gold pieces and a wand was all they had to show for a 3-session-long excursion into the Underdark. They even got enough xp in there to level up to level 12.
Now, granted, when they got back to Silverymoon (FR campaign), the dwarven mining guild rewarded them with 1000 GP (total, not each) for their efforts, but given the number of monsters they fought in there, by the DMG treasure tables there would have been MUCH more than that. Not one player complained because they felt that they had accomplished something much greater than money. And they had fun doing it.

While I agree with the spirit of your post (that treasure is too integrated into the core rules) I disagree with the above statement. The DMG says that there are plenty of creatures which do not have treasure (animals, oozes, other unintelligent creatures) and suggests increasing the treasure of other creatures to compensate. Now, granted, this can be problematic in the case where your PCs bypass the wraith but end up getting the extra treasure, but it's not as if the core rules entirely ignore this issue.

The playing I look forward to...I just seem to run out of mental energy to DM a game and do all the work necessary to run it, even with published adventures.
Maybe someone in your group would step up and run a new campaign for new characters. You can sit back and be a player for a while. Then, when you're back and raring to go, you can bring back the other characters from the campaign you run. Heathansson had that happen to him, for a night at least, and it sounded as if it provided him a much needed load off.
edit: I don't recall him saying that it was a new campaign, but it sounds like your campaign is far too deep in for someone else to grab the reins for any length of time.

farewell2kings, perhaps you need to PLAY in a game, instead of RUNNING it? ~innocent smile~ Have one of your crew run the game for a few months or perhaps you need to have a board game month. What ever happens, I wish you the best, even though you are one of those *stinking* cops! ~WEG~ Keep up the good work, you vile police officer!

I hate the fact that the real world is pulling me away from my favorite hobby (again). I'm studying for a promotional exam and working out because I will be going back to the field if I get promoted and I haven't worked on my campaign in weeks, haven't sent a query to Paizo in months and I'm slowly losing the drive to keep my game going. I don't look forward to our biweekly games as much any more, I just want to sleep. Hopefully it's just temporary, but I'm afraid this time next year I'll be so caught up in my career again that I won't have time to do dittly squat.
Dang be unto the real world! I shake a fist at you creation!
Ya, I'd say let some other schmuck be dm for a while. Two or three games and you'll be itching again.kahoolin |
I hate the treasure system in D&D.
I agree. I'm very tight-fisted (in terms of "normal" amounts of treasure). In my campaign a gold piece is worth alot and like your PCs fatespinner, mine just trekked for three weeks fighting monsters to deliver the ashes of a king to his desert kingdom. For 1200gp total reward and even then they had to haggle the guy up from 800.
Along the way they found some minor magic items, one shot things like a bead of force or a low-level magic sword. I find if you keep them poor then they have a reason to adventure.
I reckon the average PC in an average campaign would have to have some pressing reason why, if they adventure for wealth, they don't retire at level 5 or so and open a bank, or pay other people to do the dangerous stuff for them. If you were greedy enough to risk your life for wealth you wouldn't do it forever, you want to actually enjoy your money in a relaxing environment.
It's no big deal but it's just an extra hassle having to ignore and/or change the RAW. It's not like money is important anyway, it's "Dungeons and Dragons" not "Investors & Entrepeneurs."
To me the lack of money is a far better catalyst for adventure when it is a serious lack of money, not "well, I might as well go get another 10 grand for my vault."
Oh and I agree wholeheartedly with those guys who hate the misuse of literally. When someone does that I am literally mildly annoyed for several seconds ;)
