Okay, the rules: You can't choose a God, Demon, Devil, or Dragon. I, myself, would choose a race of elf--most likely Drow and a class combination of Monk & Psion class. Why Drow: I am drawn to the world of the Underdark(and its inherent challenges) and living for 100's of years appeals to me greatly. Why class/s: I have been a Martial Artist for over 20 years w/mind control thrown in. But hey, that's just me. So everyone, explain your race and class/s choices. I look forward to your responses.

Heh, used to talk about this late at night on long road-trips with buddies years ago.
Gnome ranger from the Kron Hills of the Flanaess. After 17+ years of working in the forestry field, I think I have a knack for it. My sardonic sense of humour fits with gnomes. Yeah, I have a big nose too. ::wink::

Great question, D.
I quickly hit 'reply', fully expecting to give my answer in short order.
Then I realized I thought almost every class was amazing. So an equal respect for the classes brought no clear answer.
So it occured to me, if I was thrust into the D&D world, what class could I assume? What would I be naturally gifted at?
I'd love to say wizard... but much of my intelligence is merely based on having a good memory, not hitting the books. The real world equivalent of a wizard is someone attending Johns Hopkins who has to memorize 1200 pages of medical texts a week while simultaneously running an internet home page devoted to magic mushrooms or hydrogeology palindromes.
I'd love to say sorceror... but all of my natural born metaphysical power ended up just being a youthful lie to self, although I will say, toasters rarely work within ten feet of me. I'm serious about this. Ten feet.
I'd love to say fighter... but although owning a few over-mantle gut pokers, I have no real training and thus no business ever brandishing a three foot long metal phallic symbol with intent to operate. The flesh one is enough work as it is. ::cue violins::
I'd really love to say Druid or Ranger. Love that environment and all those woodsy critters, but... not really a camper. Chalk it up to a childhood fear of those rarely emptied outhouses.
I'd love to say cleric, but I am not a person of certainty in belief. I'm ready to reconsider anything at anytime, although I can say with confidence that if most everyone on Earth is but a character in the dream of a single slumberer's mind, I am certainly the figment and not the divine dreamer. Nobody would dream this mediocre bulls%*t for themselves.
I'd love to say all of those cool evil prestige classes but, despite being a loud crabby hump sometimes I really do mean well, and I've often stopped to help people in distress, some locked in those heretofore mentioned outhouses, so I'm doomed to be a hopeless underachiever in the ways of wickedry.
I might be able to pass myself off as an aristocrat or an expert, but the only real world training I've had that would apply to D&D would be:
(Drumroll)
A bard/monk. What can I say? Jade, the Crooning Fist?
"Hey, you in the front row! Stop talking on the cell and enjoy my songs or I'll slap your Nana out her chair, you hear?!"
Oh, and Human. In the mirror I think I look mostly humanish.

if i got to be i wanted.. i would probably be a rogue for the skill points :D and be a wise man or a con man.. one of the two.
but if its by what i am.. well i would probably be stuck with the NPC warrior class or barely a 1 lvl fighter with thrown hatchets and hammers and maybe a sledge hammer of manageble side and with a good intimidate score because im told im scary when angry. and the other two feats in toughness and toughness.. since i had a building fall on me in kindergarten and im still alive and walking.
then lots of One point skills in this world info like grades 1-12 fire building, how to make gun powder, how not to get eaten by wild animals, religion, blue print reading, etc etc..
oh and a good bit in bluff.
Rooster |
I'd be a gnome bard of Zilargo (Eberron).
As much as I'd like to be some of the other classes, it just wouldn't work. I'm good at many things, but not great at much. What I am pretty good at is entertaining people and making them laugh, thus bard. I like practical jokes and never being too serious, thus gnome. Of course casting prestidigitation evryday would be awesome.

I would probably be a human mid-level loremaster or sage (with a wide range of Knowledge Skills, including Knowledge (trivia) +12 lol!) and dual classed with a couple of levels of rogue. Of course it would be awesome to have some sort of magical powers or spellcasting ability or psionics to mess with the 'bad guys'
...but if I am going all out, I would like to be reincarnated as an awakened or super-intelligent blink dog with the class levels above. It would be cool to blink in and then use a sneak attack to trip the adversary.

Elf or half-elf. And just to change things up, preferably female.
I'd definitely be *heavily* multi-classed. I'm not that interested in power, but would definitely want a wide variety of skills with which to survive my long years in a world of wonder.
I couldnt agree more. If i could i would go triple class: Sorcerer, Psion, and Monk, sharing levels equally--so at 9th level i would be 3 levels of each. But hey, that's just me.

If I were forced to into being a permanent resident of the D&D universe I would have to say Fighter. Training to be combat effective with weaponry in the D&D world is no different that heading off to college to study medicine or law or anything else in our own reality. We all have to practice, that's the discipline. I figure that learning to swing a blade is easier than comprehending spellbooks or disarming traps.
As for race I would say either Human or Dwarf. Human because there would be no adjustment and Dwarf because I gotta have darkvision.

Ya. Not coincidentally, my current character in my weekly game is a half-elf female with levels of Rogue, Ranger, and Barbarian. Starting now, the rest of her levels will be in Paladin of Freedom (Unearthed Arcana).

I'd be a human commoner, the guy that the other villagers call crazy old Christoph. I'd spend the rest of my days unsucessfully trying to reinvent electricity, and fill the children's heads with wonderous tales of hot showers, television, and the ability to procure a good meal in five minutes, with very little work. "We were all kings," I would say. "With access to powers and abilities that would make an ambitious, hark-working archmage jealous."
I would cry alot.

Has anyone read the Sword and the Flame series by Joel Rosenberg? About the gamers whose DM is actually a wizard from a "real" fantasy world and sends them all into his home world?
Good stuff, not literary mastery, but highly entertaining light reading.
Guardians of the Flame? Is it in that story that there's a one-armed rogue? I think Lightfingers was his name... Yeah, I do believe I've read it, although about 15 years ago. I don't remember much of it, but I do remember that I found it pretty good at the time. There's something magical about someone (or a group of people) being transported in a fantasy world while retaining all the knowledge from this world. It would be cool.
Ultradan.

Ultradan... Walter Slovotsky was the main rogue in that story. He was the charismatic football hero who only played D&D (or whatever game they were playing in the novels) because an attractive female was in the gaming group.
I don't remember him being one-armed. The other rogue in the party got killed very quickly upon arrival in the fantasy world because he greatly overestimated his own abilities (meta-gaming) and greatly underestimated the striking power of the city watch's crossbows.
The characters in this book were very well developed. There was a dwarf fighter who was wheelchair bound on "Earth" and who stated that he would never try to go back to the real world. There was also a female wizard who suffered from PTSD really bad and the main hero--Karl Cullinane.
For light fantasy, it was a good read and ties in pretty well to this thread, so I don't feel bad about mentioning more about it.

If I were in the D&D world I would probably be a Dark Elf I don't know why but I'm crazy about them exept for the spider queen thing though they're pretty awesome. Plus they are stronger and worth more in the Earth game anyway. If I couldn't be a Dark Elf I'd be a Dwarven Battlerager they have an interesting method of jumping atop people and shreading the skin off people is pretty cool...Even for D&D.someone send me a reply PLEASE!

If I got to choose, elven ranger. No question.
If I had to remain human but had been thrown in several years ago (before the wife and children), a true neutral monk or a cleric of Boccob.
If I had to remain human and were thrown in tomorrow, commoner expert, but I'd start taking training in wizardry as soon as I could.

Since some of you presume that we would gain whatever racial abilities apply to our new ethnicity and that our 'stats' will augment to match our preferences, I would pick:
Bugbear Fighter/Rogue:
Decent natural stats, affinity for Rogue skills, not way-out monster to the point of being attacked on sight in most civilizations... Tough enough to survive low levels, intimidating looks to dissuade low-level punks and commoners from harassment, stealthy enough to make a living without hiking into the wilderness :-)
Getting decent dates might suck, though...

As a human Expert3, I'd work as a librarian in Candlekeep (or at the Morgrave University in Sharn). To have read nearly any piece of paper, that has come under my nose since I learned reading 27 years ago, would surely give me Knowledge(overall)6 and the feat "bookworm" (+2 on any knowledge check, +1 on physical attacks made with scrolls oder tomes ).
What a shame that I'm not an elf, so I can't perfect this skill (due to my short lifespan ^^)
Gavgoyle |
I would probably be a Half-elf druid. I have always felt a bit distant from the human race, and still, not able to deny it completely. This would probably be enforced racially, as well as through my class. I've always felt pretty at home out away from people and a great communion with the natural world. Being an archaeologist, I would probably take levels in loremaster.
Being a Greyhawk kinda guy, I would probably tend a portion of the Burneal Forest above the Tiger Nomads. Being of the loremaster persuasion, I would probably locate my circle near some old Ur-Flan ruins.

I would probably be a 1st level human expert since that's what I am in real life, and like Chris I'd be more upset than happy because they would have no electricity, computers, etc. I'd also probably complain about the D&D world, like how a guy can survive being bitten by a hundred foot long dragon just because his name is Robilar and he wears a suit of armor. I'd also hate adventurers because whenever they show up trouble is not too far behind and probably means that I have a lich's crypt under my house.
Of course, since it hasn't been expressly forbidden I'd probably be a solar (since that's an angel) or a death slaad.

I loved that series (Guardians of the Flame) - as was said in the first post, light but very enjoyable reading.
The main character in the series, at least for the first 5 books, was Karl Cullinane - he played a human warrior basically. The one-handed thief was Einar Lightfingers I believe - he was killed in the first city they encountered after crossing over. Basically, the series had the game world and our world as two seperate universes ... you could cross over if you could get your mind to accept it - and with some help. The Gamemaster was a mighty wizard from the "game" world - he started the game to prepare Karl and Andy-Andy (his love interest) to go over since he foresaw Karl's son (Jason) as being the one to kill the Grandmaster of the wizard's guild ...
Anyways ... it was interesting because each person who crossed over had 2 personalities - the one was the "real-world" and the other was their "game-world". Einar died because his real world personality realized that it was wrong to steal - problem was he was in the middle of pick-pocketing a lordling - who then killed him.
Walter had these great rules he called Slovosky's laws ...anyways - sorry for the long post about the series ...
As far as the main question of this post, I think I would have to go with some sort of Loremaster I believe - I always liked the class :) Maybe with one or two levels of bard - I suck musically but am in law school (trying to get the college idea in?)

Well I actually sat down one day at the beach, yeah it was a "really" busy day watching the little children swim; And No its not like that..I am a lifeguard. I figured I would want to be a half-drow, as I think I am a loner most times besides living a little longer and having darkvision would be sweet, as well people think I am half elf anyways. Then I would have to multiclass since I am a red head and get really P####d sometimes at least one class of Barbarian and the rest in Ranger as I love the outdoors and love to spend days on end in the wilderness just walking around. Also since I spent some time working at a nature park and taking people on guided tours of the place. So I know most plants in the north eastern hemisphere as well as the animals due to my biology background. Also these classes don't tend to be found in big cities and fit in to crowds; something I am very reluctant to do. I HATE CITIES! (oddly enough I happen to be in one with over 8 million people, not by choice, stupid higer education!) Though I think I would have to spend some ranks in heal definitely, force of habit.
As for weapons I would have to use two bladed gauntlets as they are so damn sweet! or if i couldn't have those hand axe battle axe and of course a bow!YOu guys mentioned a book that has gamers go into a fantasy realm, well if you are interested another book by Guy Gaveriel Kay called the Fionavar Tapestry does something similar. A wizard from a place called Fionavar comes over to this world and recruits some college kids to help save his world Fionavar which is actually the world our world is based on. The magic system they use is pretty cool and the other creatures and peopel that show up are very interesting. its a good read.

I devoured those six books when I was 15-16. There is a deleted chapter, Gilden Fire, from the Illearth War which may be found in his short story book Dragon On A Pedestal.
His series was very Tolkienesque but quite original as well. The one thing they'd have to change to make it a good movie would be to delete the rape. Thomas was quite the anti-hero.

1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Seeing all these posts about Rosenberg's Guardians of the Flame series brought a tiny tear to my eye... Those books will always be my favorite fantasy novels ever, and not just because they were the main reason I got into Dungeons and Dragons - I think trying to writing a scene like the death in "Heir Apparent" is the reason I became I writer in the first place. I also highly recommend his Keepers of the Hidden Ways series, as it's basically the same premise, but this time the characters have forewarning and can outfit themselves in the real world ahead of time.
Come on, you know how many hours you've wasted thinking about what you'd take with you if it ever happened.
Anyhow, back to the subject of the post - I'd undoubtedly go wizard (rogues are fun, but the life expectancy just ain't there) and probably elvish as well. I like reading and dancing and living a bajillion years.
EDIT: But ya know, if I'm going to be living that long, why not multiclass? I'd throw in several levels of bard ('cause what's life without a little rock guitar?) and carry around a b#~@+in' magical sword and longbow. I wouldn't necessarily be very good with either - that's what the magic's for - but hey, why not? Whether it's a motorcycle helmet, guitar, or two-handed sword, everyone loves strapping into their "battle gear". : P

One of the reasons I loved Guardians of the Flame was because healing potions were as they should be--liquid gold...and combat was brutal, deadly, swift and a very, very serious thing to get into. Joel Rosenberg really brought that out...after each fight scene was over you felt yourself taking deeper breaths. He even addressed PTSD, the difficulties of rearing children in an unsafe world, the "difficulties of walking with women" (Lothar of the Hill People from SNL)....great stuff.
I've tried to make my D&D campaign more like that and have always failed....the characters just get butchered and the players don't have that much fun.....
I reiterate my earlier choice--human cleric. My feats would be geared towards mastery of the crossbow--rapid reload, weapon focus, point blank shot, far shot....I would want to stay as far away from melee as possible.

Hear hear. Let's give it up for snipers, both magical and mundane - not all that much fun to play in the game (at least in my experience), but definitely where I'd want to be if the otyugh hit the fan in real life.
