REQUEST: Save the Druid!

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

The Druid needs saving! The last Dragon helped out a lot, but I still haven't seen anything really helpful for druids since 279. A nice well-rounded 3.5 druid prestige class would be greatly appreciated most of all... Since items were done just recently, new uses of animal companions, wildshape, and spells also would be great. ^^ C'mon, save the druids, you know you want to...

I have never played a druid! ...for more than one session. They are one of my favourite classes and yet it seems I don't get around to playing one, curse. If my wizard dies I'm makin' a druid! Actually I'll mix my druid idea and mage-knight idea and take as many levels as ranger as I can before he starts getting spells (3 or 4, I can't remember) then from there on in it's druid. Anyhow Druids are cool do more stuff for druids. The class acts help, but it seems there is more to be said for the druid. Maybe I'm jusr delusional, it's what my gaming-buddies tell me.

ive played a druid once and it was pretty cool they are like priests with a dash of eco-nut thrown in for good measure, i like the nature based abilities, if you do alot of adventuring in forest jungles what not a druid makes almost as good a scout if not better than a ranger and in the wilderness much better than a rogue, my druid didnt last too long as my party who was led by a do gooder paladin accepted a contract with a local city to bolster the town watch and unfortunately my poor druid went stark raving insane and committed suicide so then i made a rogue with much ranks of diplomacy and bluff and taunt and stole the leadership from him and had him implicated in a very heinous crime, but i digress druids are very cool for those of us that want to now and again become an eco warrior...and the best part is the animal companion...

I played a druid once who was a hippie chick that liked plants better than animals. She thought animals were dirty and smelly and plants were cool. She wore lots of beads and would say things like, "Plants are people too!" and "Give peas a chance!"

Oh boy howdy how I do love the druids, as does James Jacobs over at Dungeon. The current line of thought around here is that druid is a pretty solid class already, and anything we do for it shouldn't bump up its power level noticeably. That's the party line, anyway, and for now that's the line Class Acts will walk.

All that said, I'm always looking for cool new options for druids that could work as a Class Acts article. If you have an idea, shoot me an email. :)

Druids need saving? Ugh, they are one of the more powerful classes in the PHB.

I have played druids twice. Both in the 3.0 days. The first in the Kalamar setting, which was great fun. The second in a Realms campaign as a druid/ranger. Once again great fun. I was really expecting more from the Complete Divine as the book relates to Druids. Two things stuck out in my mind that might become good Dragon articles. First, the Animal Lord prestige class from Masters of the Wild (one of my favorites) was abscent. Secondly, I felt the Shugenja spells stole much from the druid. While some are available on both lists I think many more should have been.

A good class acts article might be one that talks about feat options for the class. In playing my Kalamar druid I found the item creation feats to be great choices. Also, several articles on elemental feats and spells are very appealing to druids that might specialize in one of the four elements.

Druids are fun to play.

But I gotta admit, they are so narrowly defined as a class, it's difficult to come up article ideas about them.

I've always thought gnolls would make excellent evil druids.

Maybe an article on monstrous species druids. I'll have to give it some thought.

I agree there needs to be more articles about them. I have player that is new to the game (who chose to be a druid... well, she prefers the term, 'hippie'... *shrugs*) and she hardly gets to see anything about druids except in class acts. A good article about druids in general would be great. She's a hard-core druid player... I think it'z the only class she likes.

On the note of elemental feats and spells... GIMME GIMME GIMME GIMME! LOL :) My campaign history is based on the elements fairly heavily. Most of the gods have an elemental influence and many of the beliefs and customs of different areas place differing values and personas to the different elements.

One of the greatest articles I've found was on the WotC website, in their old Spellbook articles. It was called Elemental Familiar. http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/sb/sb20011109a Not only does it add more flavor for a campaign like mine, but it also gives stats for tiny elementals :) WOOOOOOOO! hehe (that link is based on 3.0 btw)

Maybe we can send in some more articles for elemental/druid-based spells and feats that are just an offshoot of the normal spells and feats. No special advantage, just puts a new spin on an old topic. :)

oh one other thing on sort-of related topic... Is there a sourcebook or accessory that has the elementalist class for 3.5? (a wizard specialized in a particular element) I haven't found one, yet. *crosses fingers*

I've thought about making my own... It would just be easier if there already was a class made for it :)

Wizards just posted a pdf that compares 3.0 feats, prestige classes and spells and their 3.5 updates. I don't know if what you are looking for is there, but it's a good place to start.

Actually, the last time I saw an elementalist was in the 2nd ed. Tomb of Magic... that or the Complete wizards handbook, but i'm pretty sure it was Tome of Magic.

It shouldn't be too hard to create, i'm thinking. using elemental descriptors on spells and just using the rules for specialization in schools of magic, but using that instead... looking at the priest elemental domains, too. Shouldn't be too hard. We all know what the opposites are fire vs. water, earth vs. air... but it doesn't look like the spells will match up well some are lagging behind others... for instance, the fire elementalist might be too overpowered compared to, say, water elementalist. *shrugs* I'll have to really look into it all and decide what to do.

Where is the pdf? I would like to take a look and see if it'z there. I know that'z one thing i missed when 2nd ed was upgraded to 3.0. That and wild mage.... :) mmmmm wild mage... LOL

Select the archives choice on the left-size menu on the main Wizards Dnd page. When the archives page loads, Scroll down til you come to the entry on Rules Reference. It was posted on 1/10,

With regards to Elementalist & Wild Mage - I am fairly certain that both are in the complete arcane. Also, there are some elemental-like classes in the planar handbook (Elemental Warrior comes to mind), and there might have been a spellcasting equivalent as well.

The animal lord was re-written for the complete adventurer. It was kinda gutted, but the wildshaping at will ability WAS a little broken (my husband is desperately hoping our GM won't pick up the complete adventurer and make him "update" his character to fit the new writing of the class). ;)

oooh neat, thanx for the info guys! :)

Perhaps an article focussing on the "dark side" of the Druid from its Celtic origins? It seems like there is too much of the Green Peace activist in the Druid, and I don't know that they need to be played that way.

It does seem that the druid is a greatly underappreciated character class. I’m glad to see that others love playing druids as much as I do!

As for Sublimity’s suggestion, I find that evil druids of this sort (Celtic origins; think wicker men) make great villains, or even appropriate anti-heroes!

How about a long article on druids -- and rangers -- in the Forgotten Realms, Eberron, and the World of Greyhawk, with briefer discussion of other possibilities?

That is, increase the depth of what's already there, rather than add new power-creep crunchy bits or gimmicky new druid variants.

Its not so much that the druid needs saving. It has good saves, good HD, pretty cool powers when you get to level five, ect. The only down side I see with the druid is its spells. I think its more on how people play the druid especially with people that like to powergame or DMs that powergame that cause the PC to do so as well. Multi-class the druid with the cleric class so that he can turn undead, get domains, and still use druid powers. Mix the druid with prestige classes that a normal druid wouldn't strive for like holy liberator or assassin. Granted it might take longer to achieve, but pretty cool none the less. If you are going for a role-play perspective have a druid that has certain quirks like being afraid of open spaces or refuses to cast fire based spells and role with that.

Well, I wouldn't mind more druid oriented material for no other reason than most druid stuff easily works for rangers as well. Maybe we could do an artivle looking at druids and rangers that hail from environments other than the usual. Tie parts of it in with certain other books that Wizards is doing. Although if you do it that way wait till like September or even December and feature Frostburn, Sandstorm and Maelstrom in the mix.

I think the druid has great spells at all levels. I recently voiced my opinion of the lack of druid spells presented in Complete Divine, were I also felt many more of the Shujenga spells should have also been on the druid list. Complete adventurer really gave a lot more focus to the druid especially with new spells and prestige classes.

I don't think the druid needs more power (they've got more blast than clerics and more healing than wizards/sorcerers), I think they just need more 'cool'. Roleplaying suggestions as well as tips and tricks.
