Now that I have your attention....*ahem*...Hail adventurers! I call you all for help! ^.^; You see, I never really was good at being evil. EVER. I'm straight-up lawful good. Always have been, always will. I am TRYING to create the world's greatest artifact, in which everyone fears. This item must be so great, that in the hands of evil could do....(this is where I get lost). Unfortunatly, my allies are all good (say for Orth, but he's working on something else for me at the moment, and it IS his name...really...). I need something that could change the world so greatly, that D&D would never be the same again!
*NOTE* Whatever the item does, it WILL happen, though everyone will still live, just under harsh circumstances (i.e. Demons and Devils may roam the world freely w/o trouble) {thus beginning SEASON II of "Luna City" campaign.
Blessed * Be adventurers!!! ^.^

In my opinion evil is more in actions than objects, that said if you want some evil artifact ideas:
GORALON'S STAFF (Powerful Aquatic Demon Lord Taking the Form of a Staff.
When planted in a body of fresh water, the water becomes saline - this effect continues back to the source first making water brackish then ultimately as saline as the ocean.
Gates in sea demons - I would great some giant crablike demons specific to the staff.
Alternately you could do the same thing with Dark Water - basically creating wells that cut through to demon infested seas on the lower planes. Discharging the staff creates a location that is a permananent Dark Water source letting the foul stuff onto our plane (including specific sites in hte ocean or giant lakes). Dark water would team with infernal sea creatures, marine demons, and undead from the seas of the abyss, the waters themselves could be semi-sentient, attacking in or nearby water as a sort of intangible squidlike creature, you could use Evard's Black Tentacles as a baseline for the effect, or use an octopus/squid and add the ghost template.
The staff could also have various water Summoning Spell Powers (infernal creatures only) - if you wanted to change it up rather than the creature popping back to its plane it was simply released to its on will on this one.
That would screw up the world pretty quick.
THE ORB OF THE PIT: Anything dead within a given radius of the orb rises a turn later as an undead creature, depending how nasty you want it to be the creature could rise as a zombie, a ghoul (which create more of their own), or a ghast (also creae more of their own). Possesion of the orb gives some control over these creatures.
JEWEL OF KANARRA: Was fixed to a place and blood is spilled over it - no fire will burn within a half mile radius EVER again (of course the characters could research a cure for this). Cities could be in trouble pretty fast with that.
If you (or anyone else) want more detailed help as opposed to a concept - and yoou like any of thtese ideas, give me some specifics about your needs. Post them here or go to flatearth.com (a great site) and pm Kyravahne.
Back to work.

Personally, I have always wondered why D&D has never spit out a version (at least not that I've ever seen) of what could be the most deadly artifact ever. I'm talking about the Golden Apple of Eris. You know, the one that Eris threw into that feast while the greek gods were in attendance; the one that had the words "For the Fairest" written upon it. If I recall my mythology correctly, that little apple led to something called the Trojan War. I mean, come on, we are talking about an artifact that can ensnare gods. What could be more devestating?

Ultradan |

This is just an idea for a weapon that would bring forth the end of the world.
You could invent a weapon that 'disintergrates' enemies on critical hits (kind of like a mace of disruption but works on all living things). This weapon would get more powerful with each use (you add the HD it 'disintegrates'). It would start out as a +1 weapon and work it's way up to +5 with special abilities.
What the character (and player) wouldn't know, is that the weapon is collecting the life energy of the slayed victims and slowly merging them together. At a certain point (when the character attains high levels), that energy in the weapon would be released, forming a gargantuan creature that resembles a giant blob of everyone it disintegrated. This creature would roam the country side devouring everything in it's path... Farms, villages, cities, continents and finally, the world. It would be up to the player to stop it.
How's that?
Ultradan

Haukehaien |

The Vecna Lives! module had a similar idea, in that Vecna was attempting to perform a ritual that would banish all the gods of Oerth and make him the sole deity. Not a pleasant thing to contemplate, but might work for you. Your artifact could be used by a demon lord to elevate himself to godship and banish all the other deities. Imagine the effects on divine casters, for example, as their source of power goes away.

Aberzombie:
An old issue of Dragon detailed the lesser know Greek gods. Eris and her apple were given stats and descriptions.
I cant remember the issue number. I think it was prior to issue 100.
The apple resides with me now, of course.
You haven't seen a red stapler around by any chance, have you?

You've got it right - for those that don't know, Eris was the goddess of discord (which she did rather well). :-D
Other fun mythology artifacts:
Fenrir's Chains
Really - what kind of effects would the chains that hold back a monstrous wolf that supposed to devour the All-father and start the end of the world do?
The Waters of Chaos
Many mythos detail how order came out of Chaos - usually chaos in the form of water or darkness. I can imagine really bad nasty effects.
Yomi's Boulder
According to the Japanese creation myth, there is a boulder that blocks the entrance into Yomi (Hell). What happens if this boulder were removed?
By far my favorite artifact was used by my brother in his campaign. The Sickle of Time, used by Cronos to emasculate his father Chaos, and used by Zeus to emasculate Cronos. Each time, it brought about a new order within the pantheon. In my brother's campaign, a dedicated worshipper of Cronos sought out this Sickle and Cronos's...parts...to restore his god to his full power so Cronos could seek out his own revenge and free his fellow Titans.
Hmm...I smell a Dragon article afoot...

An article sounds to me like a great idea. They could put in all kinds of obscure artifacts and relics from various religions and mythological tales.
some other possbilites:
- The Tablets of Fate (from Mesoptamian Myth, not FR)
- The reed of Fire that Prometheus gave to mankind
- Pandora's Box
- The wand of Circe
- The silver hand of Nuada from Celtic myth
- The ring Andvaranaut and the cursed treasure of Fafnir
They could even include stuff from well-known novels, like the Silmarils from the Lord of the Rings, or even the One Ring and the other Rings of Power. And I'm sure there is a lot of stuff that I don't know about.

I may have to submit a proposal for this - but would a specific mythos per article be appropriate, or a sprinkling from various mythologies? (Wanting opinions!)
I'm eagerly looking forward to raiding my mythology books at home.
EDIT - I would, of course, include "Use in Eberron" and "Use in Forgotten Realms" and "Use in Greyhawk" sidebars!

I like "sprinkles" better; I think an article describing powerful, potential doomsday artifacts from various real-world cultures/mythologies would be extremely cool, and each one could spawn an entire campaign in entirely different settings, from ancient Egypt or Mesopotamia, Japanese or Celtic mythology, etc. An excellent idea!

Artifact: The Abyssal Executor
Abyssal Executor: +3 axiomatic chaotic outsider bane keen speed thundering cold iron falchion; AL LE; Int 19, Wis 10, Cha 19; Speech, telepathy, 120 ft. darkvision, blindsense, and hearing; Ego score 33.
~Lesser Powers: darkness 3/day, deathwatch continually active, detect magic at will, major image 1/day.
~Greater Powers: detect chaos at will, dimensional anchor 1/day, magic circle against chaos 1/day
~Special Purpose Slay demons and bring on the Infernal Age.
~Dedicated Power greater shout 3/day.
~Other Powers: Whenever the Abyssal Executor strikes a foe with the tanar'ri subtype, that foe gains 2 negative levels, the wielder of the Executor gains 10 temporary hit points, and the Executor gains a charge. When the Executor reaches 666 charges, it gains the following spell-like ability, usable at will:
~Infernal Armageddon: This spell-like ability cracks the earth, creating a huge rift through which baatezu devils begin to pour through. This rift may be used as a gate to Baator while it is active. The first round this rift is in existence, 2d4 bone devils arrive. Two rounds later, they are joined by an ice devil. Two rounds later, a pit fiend arrives. Once the pit fiend has arrived, the rift is no longer active, though it remains, a permanent, infernal scar on the land. This is a conjuration (calling) effect, so the devils are free to use their own methods of summoning to increase the force. This spell-like ability has an effective spell level of 10.
~The Executor may also expend 9 charges at any time, as a standard action, to cast any of the following spells: binding, demand, greater teleport, mind blank, moment of prescience (can cast on wielder), plane shift, protection from spells, summon monster VIII, trap the soul (7 gems in hilt and pommel)
~Personality: The Executor was forged by the pit fiend Ceript'vox as the final key to both the victory of the Blood War and the domination of the Prime Material plane. It will remain silent until it has fulfilled its purpose. It is cruel, calculating, and above all patient.

I agree with VedicCold, "sprinkles" would be better. The more mythologies you raid, the more flavor the article has. Plus, I think gamers like info that can be adapted to a number of different types of campaign worlds.
I would love to write something like that myself, but I don't have the time (plus I've never submitted anything before). I just bought a house and have my hands full with all the "little" problems that keep cropping up.

Bummer... my first attempt to post this got swallowed into the ether. Hope it doesn't magically appear after I send this 2nd attempt.
If you'd like an artifact of truly cataclysmic effect, try my take on the Codex of Infinite Planes. Its not good or evil, but its incredibly dangerous in either hands... capable of effecting entire planets. While I've kept it compatible with whats been written before about the Codex, I've expanded it greatly and intricately interweaved it with my campaign (Greyhawk and beyond) history. You can easily take the flavor of what I've written for a history, and change it to fit the history of your own campaign world. You can find the latest version of my Codex article (including Priests of the Codex!) at http://melkot.com/arcane/codex.html
It truly is the Greatest Artifact in my own campaign, for a whole host of reasons.
As a side note... those who would like a map of Maldin and Elenderi's shop as presented in the Age of Worms Wormfood article in the newest issue of Dragon (337) can check out the "web expansion page" for the shop on my website at http://melkot.com/locations/cogh/maldins.html

Anybody tell me if you know what the Orb of Aldur is? That would really mess up the world with its evil counterpart.
Yes, I know what the Orb of Aldur is. Belgarion won't let me have it. Which is especially stingy now that the red one is destroyed with that witch. Bah!
As for evil artifacts, how about the one in the Witchfire Trilogy? That was a pretty sweet sword, if I remember. And all those undead! Bwahahahaha!

This isn't *quite* what you're looking for, but my dark-and-sinister-bad-guys-attempt-to-destroy-the-world plot that I've yet to be able to use is as follows:
A bad guy, protected by a bunch of other bad guys, is travelling to the lowest point of the earth, a volcano, wherever it makes sense. He plans on sending a sphere of annihiliation burrowing down into the center of the earth, and then magically transporting a rod of cancellation to it, creating a massive explosion at the centre of the earth that causes the world to tear itself apart seismically.
Cool additions include making the rod a super duper rod of rulership (he has charmed a LOT of badguys to protect him) or of super duper earth elementalism (He has a lot of earth elementals with him, and can shape the earth to make the hole for the sphere of annihiliation). These are real vagueties, things could be worked out more specifically (he does it in a volcano instead of center of the earth, seals the top and causes magma disharge around the earth, whatever).
I thought of this back in 2nd edition, and nowadays a dawnstar explosion does more damage than the rod/sphere combo, so that could be done instead too. The dark arch enemy has murdered the righteous avatar of pelor, and plans to use his dawnstar, weapon of justice, to sunder the earth itself!

You sir, are a GENIOUS!!! I think I have my Artifact, but No name, and No trigger, and No specifics about it. How about we start with this idea for the relic:
*The artifact creates a barrier, too strong for the Gods themselves to interfere with, severing all connections between them and the Material world (and all those material girls. ;p)*All DIVINE spellcasters can NOT cast spells! (Which one? I'm not quite sure...the ones that involve thier diety.
*All Weapons/Armor/Equipment "blessed" with ANY Divine spell(s) is automatically considered NOT being enchanted. {All other enchantments, if any, still apply.}
That's all I have for now. What are a few ideas on this???

How about the "Void Veil" that is triggered by tapping into the "Well of Unborn Souls" (think of it as plugging your Veil into the ultimate battery). Not only does this prevent the gods from granting spells and such, but the mortals who worship the gods are now no longer producing children.(the souls are instead feeding the Veil) This means the gods will eventually wither and die as the mortal races fail to produce new followers for them. If I were a god, I'd be squirming like a worm about that one, and calling in every adventuring party I could to prevent it from happening!
Got part of this idea from the WotC adventure "Bastion of Broken Souls" (by Bruce Cordell) which describes a "Bastion of Unborn Souls".

Um, not quite sure where the Well of Unborn Souls comes from - I know the Well of Souls was in the Raiders of the Lost Ark. In the context of D&D, I'll wing it:
The Well of Unborn Souls
All the souls of unborn creatures are contained within a mystical pool located in the (whatever neutrally-aligned plane exists in your campaign). While many gods have tried to claim the Well as their own, none have yet succeeded.
The Well of Unborn Souls is simple, roughly carved raised pool filled with an ever-shifting rainbow liquid. If one were to put their hand in it, they would not feel anything - the souls within are vague and unformed. (Think of the pyreflies from FF X, if you've played the game.) Every now and then, a glowing ball of light raises from the Well and vanishes into the air, going to where a soul is needed.
Despite the Well's strict neutrality (a mile-wide zone around the Well prevents any alignment-based ability, spell or effect to be used), there have been some attempts to capture the Well's power for other purposes.
Argentos Manus was a solar who sought to bring good into the world - at any cost. Argentos felt that all the souls that were born into the world could be converted to good, instead of the blank slate that they were. To change the soul's alignment, he created the Veil of the Void. After he finished created the Veil, word of it soon spread out, and he was murdered by forces from the Lower Planes.
When Argentos first created the Veil, it was in one piece. Argentos had no desire to acquire the power of the unborn souls for himself - he simply wanted souls to be born on the side of good. His murderers, however, had other plans. They knew all too well the power a soul could contain, and thus warped the Veil to their own ends.
The Veil consists of two parts - the Ring and the Rock. The Ring appears as a simple silver ring about a foot wide with a knotwork pattern engraved into its outer surface. Mithral wires form an intricate, hypnotic pattern in the center of the Ring. A transparent, smoky substance sits at the center of the ring, quiescent when not near the Well of Unborn Souls. Other than being of exceptional quality and worksmanship, the Ring radiates a steady white light (equivalent to a candle). It has no other effects than this when not near the Well or the Rock.
The Rock, a fist-sized blue star sapphire, originally was in the center of the Ring. Instead of a brilliant blue, the Rock is now a bloody, sooty red, corrupted by centuries of misuse. When Argentos' murderers separated the Veil, the Rock was used as a focal point in many a necromantic ritual. Any necromantic spell, ability, or effect used in a 100-ft radius around the Rock has its save DC increased by +5. Should a sacrifice be made over it, this bonus increases to +10.
Although the Rock is fearsome by itself, it's nothing compared to when the Veil is used. If the Ring is placed near the well, it suspends itself above the Well and expands until it reaches the circumference of the Well. Any soul that is released from the Well is passed through the Ring and its alignment is shifted to whoever wields the Veil. At least, that was Argentos' original plan. The soul's alignment is indeed shifted - but to the alignment of whoever wields the Rock. In addition, the soul does not get tied to its awaiting body, instead being diverted to the Rock. For every soul that the Rock holds, its necromantic radius increases by 5-ft. (Other effects you can add - I'm trying to be generic enough so you can scale it up or down to suit your party.)
The soulless children that are born without their souls are immediately set apart from everyone else. They don't cry, animals fear them and intelligent creatures are unsettled by their presence.
SO, in conclusion ladies and jellyspoons, here's my summary:
For the Ring
Trigger: Being placed near the Well of Unborn Souls
For the Rock
Trigger: A sacrifice made near it (place in on the sacrifice's body, whatever) or the Ring placed near the Well of Unborn Souls
To destroy the Veil, you must reunite the Ring and the Rock and throw it into the waters of Mount Celestia (or whatever good-aligned plane you might happen to have). While this effectively destroys the artifact, it sadly does not restore those souls consumed by it.
I wouldn't prevent the children from being born - I would let them be born, but they acquire some freaky-weirdness because of being born without a soul. Good campaign hook for later, though - all these children born without a soul? CREEPY.
I do believe I've rambled on good & long - enjoy!

Great Stuff Lilith!
"Argentos Manus was a solar who sought to bring good into the world - at any cost. In concert with what Lilith has contributed, and in keeping with Drake Rangers original idea that the artifact somehow cuts the gods off from connecting with the Material Plane, the Veil should have the additional effect of dropping a curtain (Veil?) of power.
"To keep the evil gods from later thwarting his plan, Argentos instilled in the Veil the ability to sever the lines of power the gods had to the other planes. The only power source strong enough to maintain such a barrier however was ironically the Well of Unborn Souls itself. Argentos went ahead with his plans arguing to himself that the sacrifice of a few souls to the Veil was a worthwhile price to have the remaining souls be born into the world on the side of good and right." (Is'nt it amazing what horrors are sometimes justified in the name of 'the greater good'?) This allows the gods to observe the plane they once controlled, but now they cannot influence it in any way.
The rest of Liliths triggers and descriptions sound great to me. Does that give you enough Drake?
- Rath
P.S. I am totally stealing this for a campaign idea, and it should be sent in to Dragon for publication. If one of you feels ambitious enough to do it, I'll gladly just take a nod in the by-lines! :-)

Ok. I just wrote the whole FREAKING storyline behind the reason as to why I need the artifacts in my campaign,and it all gone. The Poem from the three Liches, the story, everything.WT9H?!? Anyways, I'll give you the bridged vers;
The Gem Shards are acually petrified Blood of the Evil Dieties who joined together to form the Dark Alliance (No, not the creators of the game. ^.^;) The shards were created in a last moment effort to stop the Good Dieties from stopping them from ruling Alyria (my world). The Gem Shards, once joined, would create the Crystal Star, causing a dark barrier to (surprise surprise!) keep the in a permanent eclipse. Soon, the souls of the departed would have no way of making their way to their diety for "reassignment" into Alyria, and would (much like the pyre-flies in FFX) create monsters and undead to roam the world. Also, those affected by the sun could now walk Alyria, unharmed! Another reason why The Red Fang wishes to posses the Gem Shards' Power!
For more info on my campaign idea, just leave a message! Also, GREAT JOB EVERYONE! EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS! NOT JUST ME< BUT EVERYONE!!! ^.^

Yeah, Paizo's forums have wandering monsters that love to eat long posts. Basically unless you're writing something quick off the top of your head it's best to compose your post in Word or something and copy it over (or just remember to select the text of your post and copy it before you click submit).
