Having just completed a 103-session Curse of the Crimson Throne campaign, what better way to celebrate than a review of the Curse of the Crimson Throne Pawn Collection? I was very impressed by this collection as it had pretty much every named NPC in the adventure, including some that didn't even have combat encounters associated with them. It appropriately includes multiple pawns for common members of the various nefarious organizations running around the city, which is incredibly useful (when you need 5 of the same bad guys on the table, it's annoying to only have 1 pawn to represent them!). The collection also does a good job avoiding overuse of pawns already available in other collections like the various Bestiary pawn boxes (there are some, but only some). As I sit and think about it, I really can't come up with any examples of important encounters that the set left me hanging for, and that's really the best compliment I can pay. Definitely worth a purchase.
The pawns in the collections are excellent quality and look great. My only problem is that it doesn't include everything that can't be easily obtained elsewhere. I understand not including a bunch of Eel's End enforcers, as it's easy enough to use some thuggish looking NPCs from other sets. But why call for 2 necrophidiuses in the adventure, for example, when only 1 is available in the Bestiary 2 set and none are provided here? It's kind of a specific monster, and not easily replaceable. Similarly, the adventure calls for 4 wererats, but the Beastiary 1 only provides 1 and none are provided here. I would have gladly paid another $10 to $15 to get ALL the necessary monsters in one spot. And not including Sabina is a real head-scratcher. But overall it's a very good set and basically indispensable if you're running the campaign.
I love this set, it will certainly help bring Korvosa to life, highly recommended!
The review below does a great job with the specifics, so I won't bore you with more, but if you're planning on running Curse Of The Crimson Throne this is a must have!
Intimidating boggards
Two ghosts in a stunning style
Great presentations of the 'unexpected allies' (including the companion of the man)
Vampire spawns in a great version
An efreeti who really looks bad-a**
An owlbear skeleton
House drakes with 'awww' effect
A death oriented derro (inspired me instantly)
I guess some people will dig the full presentation of a certain bard
If you didn't have enough gray maidens so far, this package clearly fixes that. The queen also gets serious attention - the 'continuing the campaign' version would have been icing on the cake, but ok. There is only a limited amount of generic Bestiary creatures, which I am thankful for.
Sabina is missing (as Troodos pointed out in the comments already), but actually I couldn't find really unique artwork for her in the hardcover either. Otherwise all important NPCs seem to be covered.
So overall that's a pretty good collection, with an emphasis on Medium sized creatures. The price is as usual for younger softcover pawn packages - rather high in comparison to the big boxes, but you still get something in return.
This is exactly what I've wanted since I started running Curse of the Crimson Throne last year.
Unfortunately, as this is coming out in November, I'll likely be wrapping up this campaign by then and these pawns will no longer be of much use to me (My prep work is nearly finished for all of A History of Ashes and I'll start prepping for Skeletons of Scarwall in the next month just to stay ahead of the game).
Still, this is such a great thing for people who have yet to run this campaign or are thinking about running it once again. Kudos to you guys for releasing this. I hope that you guys will follow suit and release pawns for some of the other older adventure paths.
Oh, and nice, printable, to-scale encounter maps for us old schoolers who still like to play face-to-face would be fantastic. :-)
I would also like some flip-mats or even papermaps or printable pdfs for this.
And there is still the matter of pawns for older APs like Kingmaker (which is the first AP that sold out!).
The bonus NPC from #100 is not included—that NPC remains "bonus" to the Adventure Path and not a "load bearing" part of the AP.
As for minis-scale maps... also no:
Spoiler:
Neither are there plans to provide minis-scale flip mats or battlemats for the encounter areas in this Adventure Path. Because we cannot yet produce maps on that scale affordably. When requests like this come along, Pathfinder #11 is my favorite example—if we were to publish all of the maps of Scarwall at minis scale, the resulting product would (if I recall correctly) weigh in at about 300 pages of maps. That would cost you, the customer, at the MINIMUM what a 300 page book normally costs—and probably more, since it's about five times more expensive to produce a page of map content than a page of word content, but even if we DID just charge regular price for what's the equivalent of a 300 page book, you could expect to pay 40 to 50 bucks for that 1/6 of the total adventure. (A better comparasion would be to a flip mat, which at a price of 15 bucks presents, in effect, 18 pages of map—a full flip mat collection of Scarwall would clock in at a cost of about 16 flip-maps, for a grand total of 240 bucks. For one volume.
If folks are interested in shelling out about $1,440.00 for a complete flip-map collection for an adventure path, maybe we'd have something to run with, but even then, I'm not sure we could actually handle the printing and storage and distribution and all that stuff for an additional 300 pages of map content every month.
Doing something like this for a one-shot thing like the hardcover is, obviously, less onerous than doing it every month for an AP, but still... it's just not viable at the moment.
Would it be any cheaper to strictly produce the maps in digital form? I've scrounged around the net and found fantastic maps that people created free of charge that I converted to PDF and printed out. However, I can't find anything for Scarwall and beyond.
So, I'd totally pay for online maps that I could print out and assemble myself. I mean, I just plunked down $100 to finish printing the rest of the maps that I've found out there as well as the paper minis for the rest of this adventure. So, I'm totally willing to pay for printable maps for these adventure paths.

Since we pay cartographers by the page... no, it wouldn't noticeably lessen the cost of production to make a product like this digital only, and in fact, we'd likely make LESS money overall on it since it's a product that works best when it's printed out.

The cost of cartography is the same whether it's printed or not. It's all about how much time it takes the artist to create.
Obviously this means you should go back to the old style blue-and-white non-art style for battle maps. Straight lines everywhere and no weird angles... all hail our new blue and white Tindalos overlords! :)
I'm glad to see there will be pawns for CotCT. I used the Bestiary Box and the Skull & Shackles pawns together when I ran S&S, and it worked out great.
Cindermaw is a gargantuan creature, so we probably won't see him unless paizo decides to do a gargantuan & colossal pawn set of select creatures of that size. Fingers crossed though, because I'd empty all the gold out of my bag of holding for at least one set of pawns that size.
Sorry for the late reply and sorry for the mistake: I saw the pawns on my shelf and wondered why I owned them as I usually do not buy them. But I just found the PO and shipping emails--seems I went all out for the RotRL AE.

You are right of course with the flip mats - they can´t cover every map part in an AP book.
I thought more of something like "key-area" flipmats for each AP book (like the "Town Square" flip-mat for RotR AE/Burnt Offerings).
When i look at CotCT, i think for book 1 either "The old Fishery" on page 13 or "The Dead Warrens" on page 50 (left half on one side, right half on the other) would make sense as a Flip-Mat.
For book 5 the central part of the "Barbican Gate" map from page 15 would be a good choice (cut away the edges) and for the other side areas 39 & 42 from page 26 (again with the edges cut away).
At least a Flip-Mat for the first part of a campaign would make sense, as this is the book that sells best.
Having seen the latest artwork from the hardcover, I'm hoping these pawns are using the same art.
Highly likely. RotR did use the new art and as the pawns come out 2 months later than the book and Paizo already has the new artwork for a while, they will have provided it to the printers.
That said, i am normaly not buying pawns anymore (as i have over 1.000 plastic minis), but for the NPCs and having everything for an entire AP handy istill do.
I wish Paizo would make more collections like this for it´s older APs which still see much tabletime.
Kingmaker, Serpent´s Skull, Carrion Crown and Jade Regent have great art and creatures and don´t have to be updated like Legacy of Fire or Second Darkness.
Its a shame Second Darkness can't get this treatment, but I'm thrilled for CotCT! I played in a fun d20pro CotCT campaign once, but had to drop out due to changes in my work schedule. This release will give fans of this AP a second chance.
I understand that Second Darkness was the lowest selling AP, so it will never receive a proper update.

I feel the same.
I love SD more than LoF, CoT, MM, GS and HV but it IS the lowest selling AP of them all.
That said, it can't be backordered anymore from retailers in germany and is quite pricey now.
In 10 years we could get it.
I hope we will see a Zirnakaynin Campain Setting before then. ;-)

Same. There's always that one creature/npc/something that you just flat out can't find/get a mini for and a simple description doesn't do it justice.
