Pawn's Dilemma GM |
Enizver misses again firing through two allies around a corner.
If you moved forward through the allies, then fired, then moved back, there wouldn't be cover but you'd end up provoking when you moved back out of the devils' reaches. It's just a tight spot to be the one bringing up the rear...
Horat misses the imp with his attack but Olivia lands a solid shot while healing Halgrin and Horat.
Halgrin enters rage and attacks the imp twice, recklessly.
Action surge attacks: 2d20 ⇒ (3, 18) = 21 and finishes off the small devil!
I'll check Halgrin's HP in a bit. I know he's not close to down yet, partially thanks to you.
Chains Horat x 3: 4d20 ⇒ (4, 13, 11, 11) = 39
Chains Halgrin x 3: 4d20 ⇒ (19, 9, 13, 13) = 54
Grapple damage Horat: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 6) = 7
Grapple damage Halgrin: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2
Dam Horat: 6d6 + 12 ⇒ (4, 3, 5, 3, 5, 4) + 12 = 36
Dam Halgrin: 6d6 + 12 ⇒ (2, 1, 1, 4, 2, 4) + 12 = 26
The chain devil is an incredibly deadly foe with all of his chains in action. He is significantly wounded but can still fight for a while yet. Two of his chains keep Horat and Halgrin grappled, squeezing them with their barbs. The devil then attacks twice with his chains and twice more with the other animated chains, ripping hard into Halgrin and Horat. Horat is knocked unconscious (43 damage to Horat and needs to make death saves) while Halgrin is seriously wounded and barely still stands (14 damage to Halgrin after resistance).
Party, GO!!!
Pawn's Dilemma GM |
Sorry about that. I posted an update several days ago that got eaten and didn't think to double-check.
Enizver fires again but can't land a shot on the devil with two of his allies in the way. Horat lashes out at the imp but the tiny devil zips sideways out of the way. Olivia lands a powerful shot that greatly hurts the devil while Wrinil harrasses it with powerful missiles.
The barbarian assaults the imp but can't quite manage to land his strike on the small devil.
1d20 ⇒ 4
Dam: 1d8 ⇒ 6
Chain devil: 8d20 ⇒ (9, 12, 8, 18, 2, 12, 15, 9) = 85
Auto dam: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 3, 4) = 15
Other dam: 8d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 2, 4, 4, 6, 1, 2) = 26
The chain devil roars in pain and his animate chains continue their assault while he swings his with wicked effect. Horat is squeezed by the chain holding him (8 dam) and so is Halgrin (7 dam before resistance). Then chains whipping through the air also tear through the two warriors (21 damage to Horat and 21 to Halgrin before resistance).
I haven't been tracking Halgrin's hp either bc I keep hoping he comes back soon. Let's put him at 18. Everyone, GO! Horat, I believe the last strike leaves you unconscious and making death saves.
Horat "The Bulwark" |
Horat falls, trying not to despair.
I can save him yet! Plague could not stop him!
Death Save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
1 success.
Wrinil son of Pel of Waterdeep |
Seeing Horat go down, Wrinil reacts quickly with a prayer to Mystra and a hand on Horat.
Cure 2: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (4, 1) + 4 = 9
Enizver |
Swearing as the warrior fell once more, Enizver reloaded and fire once more.
To Hit: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Damage: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (6, 3) + 4 = 13
Thunder Monger: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Olivia "Liv" Moore |
Seeing Wrinil go after Horat, Olivia continues to focus on keeping Halgrin up as she keeps firing her crossbow at the imposter devil.
Crossbow: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Damage: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Healing word, Halgrin: 2d4 + 4 ⇒ (4, 3) + 4 = 11
Pawn's Dilemma GM |
Horat, how do you have +2 to death saving throws? They are untyped saving throws so only bonuses that add to all saving throws benefit them.
Oh and that reminds me that I need a con save from Horat to avoid getting a scar.
Enizver misses again while Wrinil heals Horat. Olivia fires a shot that strikes hard into the chain devil, causing it to snarl in anger.
Halgrin at 29 hp.
Halgrin can't reach the devil so he recklessly attacks the chain holding him
Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16 but he doesn't quite manage to make an impression on the hard metal.
Holding Horat: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 3) = 8
Holding Halgrin: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 5) = 9
Chain attack Horat: 2d20 ⇒ (7, 3) = 10
Chain attack Horat: 2d20 ⇒ (20, 3) = 23
Chains attack Halgrin: 4d20 ⇒ (14, 10, 3, 9) = 36
Dam: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (3, 6) + 4 = 13
The chains holding Horat squeeze him hard but he manages to remain conscious. Then the devil jerks his head at another animated chain which whips through the air but is deflected by the warrior's armor! Frustrated, the devil sends another chain whistling through the air and this one knocks Horat unconscious again (another con save against scars and death saves again). Then chains squeeze Halgrin while he deflects a chain wielded by the devil but is struck by the devil's other chain.
After resistance, Halgrin takes 11 damage, putting him back at 18. Everyone, GO!!!
Horat "The Bulwark" |
I had a con check in mind. Apologies. I'll put it down to a general paucity of sleep.
Horat awakes - and is struck senseless once more!
Con Save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Con Save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Death Save: 1d20 ⇒ 3
1 failure.
Enizver |
Muttering about the duplicity of devils, Enizver tried once more.
To Hit: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Damage: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (3, 2) + 4 = 9
Thunder Monger: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Olivia "Liv" Moore |
Hoping that the best way to survive this encounter is to end it quickly, Liv does a quick burst of offensive energy.
Bonus action to activate Hexblade's curse and then last sorcery point to twin eldritch blast.
Eldritch blast 1: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Force damage 1: 1d10 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 4 + 2 = 12
Eldritch blast 2: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10 I'm assuming this misses, so going to use favored by the gods to add 2d4 to this
Favored by the gods: 10 + 2d4 ⇒ 10 + (3, 2) = 15
Force damage 2: 1d10 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 2 = 11
Hexblade's curse: 9/10 rds remaining

Pawn's Dilemma GM |
Looks like you just got some scars, Horat. We'll resolve them after the fight, not in the middle.
Enizver misses again while Olivia lands one solid shot but misses the other. Wrinil cures Horat, bringing him back to consciousness.
Unable to move forward, Halgrin tries to break free from the chains so he can close the gap with the chain devil.
Raging athletics: 2d20 ⇒ (16, 14) = 30 He succeeds in freeing himself and steps around the chain devil to keep it from repositioning.
Squeeze Horat: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 4) = 10
Attack Halgrin: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Dam: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (3, 3) + 4 = 10
Attack Horat: 2d20 ⇒ (20, 4) = 24

Crit dam Horat: 4d6 + 4 ⇒ (4, 4, 6, 3) + 4 = 21
dam: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (6, 1) + 4 = 11
The chain holding Horat squeezes him tightly then the chain devil whips a chain through the air that strikes him very hard, knocking him unconscious (con save against another scar and death saves again). The devil strikes Halgrin with one of his animated chains, restraining him again. That helps him bring a chain in his hand whistling around to strike Halgrin hard!
That puts Halgrin at 8 hp. Everyone, GO!!
Enizver |
Moving into a better position to take a shot, Enizver tried to finish off the damned chain wielding demon thing.
To Hit: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

Wrinil says yet another prayer to Mystra for healing on Horat.
Cure 2: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (1, 3) + 4 = 8
Olivia "Liv" Moore |
Given that you've healed Horat and he's been immediately knocked out again twice now/is just accumulating scars without actually being able to attack, I'm not really sure you're doing him any favors by trying to continuously heal him. Though I suppose it's good for the rest of us that the chain devil keeps attacking him instead of us?
Growling in frustration, Liv once more shoots at the chain devil and then returns to healing Halgrin, hoping his resistance will keep him up.
Crossbow: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Damage: 1d10 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 2 = 11
Healing Halgrin: 2d4 + 4 ⇒ (3, 3) + 4 = 10
Hexblade curse: 8/10 rounds. I also only have 1 more spell slot after this. Debating if it's best to use it on trying to keep Halgrin up or on Hex for an extra 1d6 damage.
Pawn's Dilemma GM |
Ok Horat you've been healed up. It is an interesting question because you squishy folks certainly don't want these chains coming your way...
Olivia lands another solid shot on the chain devil while Enizver manages to get a clearer shot this time but it just barely grazes the devil, bouncing off his thick, infernal hide.
Act: 1d100 ⇒ 87 You may act now! Note that you are still restrained by chains.
Horat "The Bulwark" |
Horat would actually prefer to be the target of the devil's attacks. To his mind, he can take that punishment a lot better.
Horat rises, falls, then rises again.

Just fyi, Horat, none of you are frightened by the devil any more. I forgot to let you guys know the duration on that but I don't think it has mattered. Those attacks miss regardless of disadvantage.
Horat breaks free but misses his attack. Halgrin swings his blade at the devil.
Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
dam: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
He strikes a hard blow, cutting deep into the devil's shoulder! With all of the combined attacks, the devil is finally banished back to its home plane!
860 xp each for that deadly encounter. Care to rest, heal, or anything before opening the next blood door?
Horat "The Bulwark" |
Ah!
Exhausted, Horat stands, warchful for other foes.
He speaks, emotionally drained.
"The damned thing appeared to me as my brother, dead of plague three years. It found a weakness and struck. After that, I require healing or rest, and preferably both."
Enizver |
"Last boyfriend for me," Enizver replied as he slumped. "No onjection to you taking a rest, Horat. You earned it." He looked at the others. "Shall I do the healing this time?"
Wrinil son of Pel of Waterdeep |
Wireline walks over to the dead creatures and scribbles notes on a piece of parchment while standing next to each of them.
Olivia "Liv" Moore |
Letting out a breath she didn't know she was holding, Liv blinked slowly as part of the devil's life energy flowed into her, and once again Olivia was back just in time to hear Enizver's question. "I can use my healing kit. But anything past that, yes, that might be a good idea. I'm beginning to run low on magical resources. Do you think there's much more of this temple left?" She chewed her lip nervously.
After the short rest, I'll have 3 2nd-level spell slots, but that's it.

He reached out and tapped Halgrin too.

Enizver |
Sighing, Enizver headed over to the door and checked it for traps and oddities before pulling up his sleeve. One trap missed was awkward.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Once he was happy the door was safe, the Gnome cut the back of his arm to bleed on the damnable and likely pre-damned door. He never understood why people would cut there hands and fingers. Didn't they know how many delicate muscles were in those? Cut your handly badly and you wouldn't be able to make a fist, let alone do delicate work on intricate machinery.
Assuming the door was safe to be opened he examined he gestured for his more martially inclined companions to swing inside.
Pawn's Dilemma GM |
Enizver bleeds on the door and you hear a low, shuddering moan, as if of anticipated pleasure, echo through the building. The door slides open and you see a chamber illuminated by a red glow coming from the walls. Horrible carvings of tortured creatures in grotesque poses line the stone walls. Steps cut at sharp right angles lead upwards into the center of the chamber where some sort of altar stands.
Horat "The Bulwark" |
Horat prepares to advance into the room, his eyes open for danger.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Olivia "Liv" Moore |
Olivia flies up on her broom to get a better look at the altar without actually climbing up the stairs towards it.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8 And probably finds nothing interesting.
Wrinil son of Pel of Waterdeep |
Wrinil thinks for a moment and then sticks a hand into one of his belt pouches. He pulls out a cloth and unfolds it into his open hand. Inside the cloth appear to be small mounds of two shiny, powdery substances. With a quick gesture and couple words the powders explode out and disappear.
Wrinil casts See invisibility
Pawn's Dilemma GM |
Horat can't perceive anything extra from this vantage point. Olivia's blood rushes from her head as she accelerates upward and her vision is blurry for a moment. But then she shakes her head and can clearly see a large, stone, basin-like depression set into the center of the altar that appears to have some sort of drain in the bottom. The altar-basin has many infernal markings inscribed in it.
Wrinil casts his spell but doesn't spy anything that he didn't see before.
But a cool idea.
Horat "The Bulwark" |
Horat slowly and carefully continues to advance towards the centre, stopping at the edge of the basin.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Enizver |
Enizver approaches the basin. "I'll give you three guesses what this probably wants," he noted dryly. He studied the basic, trying to work out what made it tick. "Do we have a couple of minutes? I have a spell that will tell me if this is magical, and another that will let me understand the magic that's there, but they'll take some time to perform." Enizver was very uncertain that pouring blood into this thing was the smartest move until they understood it better.
Horat "The Bulwark" |
"I imagine blood and perhaps a great deal of it. Take your time, Enizver. I shall stand guard over you."
Horat moves next to the gnome, halberd ready.
Will riposte should any attack come for Horat and miss
Olivia "Liv" Moore |
"I don't think we're in a hurry." Olivia nods. "If we can't find a way around giving it blood, if we all give a little, I have a spell that can heal all of us. It takes a while to work though." Prayer of healing takes 10 minutes to cast, but heals 2d8 + 4 on up to 6 creatures, and I could do it 3 times. I will be completely out of spell slots though.
Enizver |
Enizver nodded, then began to cast Detect Magic. Once he confirmed the basin was (or was note) magical, he'd check the rest of the room. And then he'd begin the ritual to Identify the magic he found. If any.
Pawn's Dilemma GM |
Well there's no limit to the number of times you can convert warlock spell slots into sorcery points and those sorcery points into sorcerer slots, right? It just takes a short rest each time.
Enizver confirms the basin is definitely magical, containing some form of necromancy to absorb blood and do... something... with the life energy. It seems quite powerful.
Wrinil son of Pel of Waterdeep |
Wrinil takes notes of Enziver's rituals and how they differ from his own, scratching his quill on his parchment only a couple feet from Enziver all the while.
Horat "The Bulwark" |
Having spent considerable time staring at the various walls, Horat hopes to see an alternative to feeding this damned temple more of their lifeblood.
Enizver |
"No surprise, necromantic powers. Takes the blood and powers something. I'm guessing nothing good will happen if we feed it more, but that if we're going to save that captain we don't have much choice." Rising, Enizver put is still oozing arm out over the basin, unless someone else really wanted to. Or wanted him to stop. "If this tries to take all my blood please pull me away, I need to keep at least some of it."
Horat "The Bulwark" |
Horat remains near Enizver.
"I shall do my best to protect you."
The Untherian stands ready with two hands on his halberd, ready to strike a suddenly appearing foe - or to seize the gnome.
Olivia "Liv" Moore |
Haha, I suppose we could take a bunch of short rests but at a certain point, a long rest would just be more efficient.
Figuring the basin probably want one creature's worth of blood, and not wanting Enizver to pass out, Olivia pulls out a clean blade and slashes her forearm to help contribute to the pool.
Horat "The Bulwark" |
Horat, with a stony expression, raises one arm above the basin and cuts his forearm with his halberd.
Olivia "Liv" Moore |
As she continues to bleed over the basin, Olivia turns to the rest of the group. "Do you think it wants blood from all of us? Or is it simply waiting for one of us to get hurt enough to pass out?"
Horat "The Bulwark" |
"We should try blood from us all first. Halgrin, will you contribute?"
Pawn's Dilemma GM |
Halgrin also bleeds into the basin but it seems like what you are doing is insufficient. Perhaps some of the markings on the basin could be of use...
The markings seem to indicate, indirectly through poetic descriptions of horrible rituals, that an entire, living creature should be placed in the basin.
Wrinil son of Pel of Waterdeep |
