A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 3-7.

The failure of Mendev's wardstones set in motion not only a new crusade but also catalyzed a change in the Pathfinder Society's various factions. As the Pathfinders prepare to march on the Sky Citadel Jormurdun, members of the various factions scramble to consolidate their gains and neutralize their enemies. "The Paths We Choose" is a special event designed to highlight the changes in each faction over the course of Season 5, The Year of the Demon, and the adventure is different for each group depending on which factions are represented at the table. Content in "The Paths We Choose" also contributes directly to the ongoing storylines of the Andoran, Cheliax, Osirion, Qadira, Sczarni, and Taldor factions. This adventure kicks off Season 6, The Year of the Sky Key and is for character levels 3-7.

This scenario is designed for play in Pathfinder Society Organized Play, but can easily be adapted for use with any world. This scenario is compliant with the Open Game License (OGL) and is suitable for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.

Waste of Hitchcock

Having only played this once at GenCon, I had a good GM, and a fun group of players. But I know a couple players at the table where not interested in the scenario.

Story 1/5

I am sure there must be one, at least from the GM side. So what we have is a series of quest based on faction leaders. Some characters may not even care or be interested in dealing with other peoples faction missions, let alone their own faction members. Can a Pathfinder choose not to be in a faction, or not loyal to a faction?

Setting 1/5

This is nothing really special that deals with Golarion cannon in fact this scenario could be happening anywhere. A dragon a monster or something would help with the mix. You do have a couple faction heads that show up to give you orders.

Role-play-ability 2/5

So there is some role play chances, but I guess it is dependent on how many factions are in your party. If you have 5 then it becomes much harder, being in a time slot. The surprise announcement of the scenario being tied to factions really caused problems with my group that had been formed for 8 months before hand.

Combat 1/5

I guess this will vary by group, I know that the group that I played with hit a trap. I am not sure combat lasted more than one round in any encounter, also there were some combats that lasted less than a round for my group.

Suitability 1/5

I am pretty sure not much of this would be used in a home game. Unless you are playing a home game that involves a faction head.


Not at all entertainting

I really looked forward to playing this special, and perhaps it was a case of getting my homes up, but I was entirely disappointed by this scenario, and not at all entertained.

If I had to sum up, it is basically 4 or so hours of running old school faction missions. That's it. There isn't really anything that ties it all together at the end, or any real sense of participation with the other tables (as in more customary specials.) It was just, "do these three missions and you're done.) I didn't get any sense of an overarhcing plot or story line, other than "oh, factions have changed."

If you like the old-school faction missions, where you have to run around and steal/sabotage/kill, then this scenario is most definitely for you. If you like more story-driven scenarios, then avoid this one because it won't do much, if anything, for you.

To say this scenario was disappointing is, to say the least, an understatement.


History repeats itself

As a whole this 'scenario' fails. What we really have here is something that wanted to be many smaller missions or perhaps "quests" but was decided it would be thrown together and called a full scenario. It is the awkwardness of First Steps combined with the murder hobo aspect of many early scenarios.

Your team is tasked with taking on 3 of 7 missions for no reason more then you are told to by some faction leader. Once you complete your nonsensical mission they begin to spit a block of text at you in the same vein of awkwardness that they did in First Steps.

This should have been made into multiple smaller quests where players decide which one to play based on the faction they would like to join and after they finish they make the decision to move into that faction or look into a different one.


Very Good Transition Scenario

I thought this scenario did an excellent job at accomplishing a very difficult task in transitioning the factions over to the new versions. The nature of that task really put serious limits on how cohesive the overall story was going to be.

I had a lot of fun with the scenarios. One or two were just average but the ones that really shone for me were the missions that allowed for multiple different possible creative solutions. And the Grand Lodge scenario was just creepy and cool.

If I was stuck doing a couple of the weaker faction scenarios I might have given this one less star.


Worst scenario since Race for the Runecarved Key

We all joke about being "murder hobos", but then suddenly you're thrust into a scenario where your 5th level character is being asked to commit minor vandalism for no compelling reason.

The concept behind this scenario is that you wrap up the faction storylines for Season 5 so that they can transition to the new factions. However, there are several reasons why this scenario doesn't work, the main one is that 2/3rds of the missions aren't applicable to your character. Or as mentioned above your character may have serious hesitation to do what's being asked. Reminiscent of the 2012's Race for the Runecarved Key you'll be placed in numerous situations where you're blackmailing, stealing and just generally being a jerk. It's one of the games that helps you realize why everyone in Golarion is wary of Pathfinders.

The actual missions (of which I've played 3) are okay, perhaps comparable to the middle "filler" encounter in a traditional scenario. The scenario itself offers no build-up to anything, an end-boss or really a pay off of any sort.

This would double the play potential of this product and allow more PFS players to let their characters experience the changes in their factions.

That would be very difficult to coordinate. Remember that you would have to ensure that everyone at the table was not replaying one of the missions, and that's a tall order for a table of six.

The Special advises that a group should be able to play through at least three missions, but it can do more as the slot allows. It's conceivable that one might play 5-99 as an epic, 6- to 8-hour event and do all of the missions.

Silver Crusade

Why was the Silver Crusade left out as the only faction that doesn't get any attention in this module ?

Silver Crusade had a mission, just like every other current faction. If you played with more than 3 factions present, your table might not have had time to get to it was all.

I had the same question - the answer is in the fact that you get to make one faction change at any point during Season Six. When you start Season Six, your faction transfers to the new one matching it (if applicable). From then until next Gen Con, you can make one free faction change.

So since this was run as a special, does it count towards the "10 exclusives/specials" for qualification for 5th GM star?

I only ask because I'm at 99 tables and want to start getting those in soon.

Managed to play 5 of the 7 factions with one replay. Overall, not bad, but not great either.

Hard to tell if you are being serious or not. I have 113 tables now. And no. I have never run an exclusive. I have run a table at a multi-table special though.

Still no definitive answer to my question that I can see.

I have a question, not whether it is a misspelling and maybe not important, but English is not my language and I tend to translate the stage for better interpretation. On page 6 named 'The Opparan Trace Commission,' and also page 10, but say the glorious speech Opparan Trade Commission. which of the two is? if they mean different things.

It should be the "Opparan Trade Commission." Trace would be a typo.

given that this was essentially a reboot of first steps to introduce new factions, and tome of righteous repose has set precedent for a 3-7 evergreen, is there any chance this could be opened up for replay? likely without the trait boon intact, similar to the wayfinder restriction on confirmation?

I honestly hope not - this is way different from Tome of Righteous Repose. If people are super interested in playing for the other missions, that's why GM stars exist.

But honestly, half of the missions are pretty crappy anyway. The Exchange and Sovereign Court missions are cool, but the Grand Lodge, Liberty's Edge and Scarab Sages missions are forgettable, and the Dark Archive and Silver Crusade missions are downright terrible.
