Outstanding Resource for fans of Vamps...even if a little overambitious

I've been looking forward to this one for a while!

Some of the things I've heard about this book sound a little entitled, complaining that Blood of the Night wasn't at all what they wanted...but in reality, it does exactly what the product description said it'd do. It was never marketed as a sourcebook exclusively for dhampir characters - its trying to cover vampires, dhampirs, and hunters. It tries really hard, falls short in a few places, and is actually really awesome in others.

Instead of focusing on what people thought it was going to be, let's focus on what it really is.

This book is 36 pages long, with about 31 pages of content.

Layout:

The book is spread a bit thin trying to cover three different modes of play, but is for the most part, neatly divided which makes it easy to jump from section to section. I also really adore page 3 with the rules index, telling you page numbers for feats, spells, traits, etc - really digging that. That being said, there are sections that should be next to each other but are instead crammed in elsewhere, like why is "Vampires on Golarian" squeezed in between dhampirs and hunters, when the whole first section is about vampires?

I also need to make mention of the infamous spread on pgs 16-17...one huge mural with three feats floating somewhere in there. I mean, the art is amazing...but its a really weird layout choice and the feats are pretty hard for me to read.

Crunch:

Each of the four vampire races, moroi, vetala, nosferatu, and jiang-shi are well represented and fully detailed...information important to anyone looking to play a vampire, hunt a vampire, or be sired by/born of one. There's also a neat section on some ideas for playing as a vampire PC with a mixed party, for PCs who aren't sure where to begin.

The optional rules for hunger is also really cool - I can see a lot of interesting inspiration in it for enemies (PCs stumble upon a nest of hungry ghouls suffering adverse penalties, etc).

The weapons and feats were kinda sparse, but I loved what they did put in there.

Fluff:

There's a lot of fluff here for each race of vampire, with some really interesting story hooks behind each of them. Each one also gets its own traits and a little box of extra little information...stuff that I really love :)

The only fluff that I really didn't care too much for was the "roles" sections throughout. To me, it feels like wasted space that could have been used for archtypes, or more weapons, etc. However, I do see their importance for new players learning to stretch their imaginations, and GMs for quick and easy NPC building. However, I understand that I'm not the target demographic for them, as I already have a very active imagination and could have come up with these for myself :)

The part where the roles bothered me...was that that was all the hunters really got. I would have really loved to see something much more than that for them, maybe an archtype for the Ranger class, or something. That's not me complaining about "not getting what I wanted", that's me stating that with all of the rich fluff that can be derived from hunting the undead, it would have been great to get something deeper than roles.

This book is also really beautiful - they chose a really wonderful layout with lot's of black and red, but not enough to hurt your eyes.

The artwork is also gorgeous throughout. All of the official art I've seen for dhampirs have been...bad to me. Examples would be the Advance Race Guide, and the weird dhampir on page 19 of this book. However, this book actually offers me a visual reason to want to play as a dhampir in the heritages section with some really neat artwork on each.

Overall:

Four stars!

The positives:
Great layout - imaginative fluff - cool feats/weapons - great resource of info on the overgrown demonic mosquitoes

The negatives:
Pgs 16 & 17 - a LOT of information crammed into a small book; so many great ideas, so few pages! - some of the info is a little scattered - vampire hunter section could have been better...so much potential funneled into roles

Overall a really great attempt at something new. I really look forward to the next book in this style and I hope that its even better than this one was!

Most of the other reviewers have already highlighted most the problems with this book. It feels more like it should have been a chronicles book rather than a player companion. (That and I've never had pc's as vampires work out well.)


Disjointed

This book is great quality. Both the writing, the art and the layout are top notch. There's certainly a lot of love, talent and skill here. That's what the 3 stars are for.

However, this book is also disjointed and aimless. Much like Orcs of Golarion, it spends pages and pages talking about something that's not really happening at gaming tables: people playing vampires in D&D. It's also talking quite a bit about something that happens, but very rarely: vampire hunters.

Finally, there's something that's happening: people playing Dhampirs. Angsty brooding spawn of undead who try to shake off their dark heritage and pave a way of antiheroes! Hell yeah! Now that's what people wanted, and this book gives them just a few bits of that. Compared to the full-on disclosure in Blood of Fiends/Angels, Dhampir players can and will feel treated short and cold (cheap pun very much intended) here.

Paizo, the format is great. The layout is sexy. But you're selling oranges to lemon fans here.


Not at all what I wanted

I went into this with high hopes, really I did.
I LOVED the other "Blood of XXXX" books and as I am playing a Dhampir I waited till release day on the edge of my seat.
Had this been 3 books I would have bought all 3, and I think I would have rated tem all well.
Sadly it is not 3 book, it is one really bad book.
Do you play a Dhampir? enjoy your 6 pages (if that)
This is not a "Blood of XXXX" book in the way we have seen them in the past. And if this is the new format this will be the last one I buy.


Nice but overambitious

When this was first announced to include rules for PC vampires, I got worried. Not because I'm opposed to them. But simply because I was assumed the format of the Player's Companion line would hold it back.
I was expecting a book that either tried to cover Dhampirs and gave you lackluster rules for vampires or one that'd mostly cover player character vampires, but leave Dhampirs feeling cheated.

The first reviews here made me hopeful it'd be the one I'd personally have preferred: A few tidbits for Dhampirs, but actually use a big part of the page count to make vampires playable. So did that succeed?

Sadly, not really. We get a few nice looks at the different types of vampires, with a healthy dose of Golarion lore regarding them. Especially managing to describe their history in an interesting way and also managing to describe their different means of being created is a great success, considering the word count. I'd even consider most of the fluff here of a better quality than the previous two "Blood of" books.
It also has a nice section on how players and GMs can try to integrate vampires into their games. It even gives tips for the "not recommended but you know it's going to be what happens most" mixed group. That might've worked better, if the book didn't also mention that you're pretty much signing off on a 150 RP monster.

But the amount of rules options isn't even on par with the average race covered in the Advanced Race Guide, though I do have to note that the optional feeding rules were a necessary and well done part that obviously needed the space it took (which isn't that much).
There's no summation of the vampire template anywhere in the book, btw. That could have easily been done, even though it'd have eaten into the pagecount. Another reason not to do this concept in this format, perhaps?

While others have commented on liking the roles, and I do kind of get the appeal, for me that's entirely wasted space. It's not like you can't get the same (or even better) advice on building a specific concept in Pathfinder by going to a variety of forums.
And that's if you need that kind of thing. Personally, I certainly don't need a list of "this might kinda work for this specific role".

I was ok (not happy, but ok) to give up the space for the artwork. Most of it was great, a few pieces (the second part of the centerpiece sadly among them) were mediocre with a few outstanding ones to tip this back easily towards great on the artwork.

Overall I'd say this has been an experiment that should be treated as a failure regarding content.
I did love the layout though, and certainly hope that part is considered as much a success as the content isn't.

If it were up to me, the "Blood of" line would take the new layout, keep the old focus and not attempt to do something it can't do well.
Maybe Paizo might instead just do a full, well sized rulebook on PC vampires and a followup or as part of the same book, put the werebeasts in. Doing them in the same format would work out exactly the same: It would simply be a teasing glance at what might have been. I fully trust the authors that wrote this to treat us to a far greater experience, given the space.

Maybe then it would even attempt to make use of the Advanced Race Guide's system.

Mentioning Twilight is just mean, I'm sure the writer of this suppliment will have more respect for the material.

On the topic of sunlight and vampires, by the way, that part of vampire lore was added by the movie Nosferatu as an excuse for the director to end the movie on the right note (spoiler: vampire dies, the couple lives happily ever after). Dracula walks about during the day in the novel, though his victim Lucy Westenra only emerges at night because Van Helsing hypothesizes that she was turned in her sleep under hypnosis and so her vampire self can only emerge at night.

Similarly, Dracula's predecessors in literature, Carmilla and Lord Ruthven, weren't limited to nocturnal habits.

Before that in folklore, part of the horror of the vampire myth was that anyone you know could be a vampire. Husbands, wives, strangers, anyone, much like witches and werewolves. In a way it was a similar kind of horror that modern audiences would find in pod-people and doppelgangers. Wandering about at night, of course, was a bad sign since a vampire would need to feed discretely but during the day they'd act like everyone else to blend in.

But lets not encourage the playing of undead as Characters..unless SKR is going to do a Ghostwalk Style book for Pathfinder..now that would be radical.

Oh boy yes i too hope for a blood of the moon, lycanthropes have always got the short end of the playable race stick with dnd and now so far in pathfinder


I'm wondering if the vampiric heritages will be handled like the tiefling heritages in Blood of Fiends, with alternate stats, skill bonuses and spell-like ability.

I have to say that I am very curious about this book. Will have to wait and see.

Twilight is to me like taking a bottle of your favorite alcohol and using it to start the bonfire. Now you have nothing to drink but the people who could not appreciate it think it a great primer for bonfires. It is one where when I read any of the comments of people who love Twilight going to read "Dracula" and say it is horrible and don't understand why anyone would like it that I want to scream. I hope nothing in the companion makes me think Twilight.

I am curious on what all could happen with this. Sort of curious about the hunters. I was a big fan of White Wolf World of Darkness when it was first starting and before group fell apart. I would like to see some more lore and really don't want to see any characters that would work like Blade.

Makes me wonder about a Were- book but I am happy with this as I remember as a kid saying I wanted to grow up to be a vampire hunter. Vampires, werewolves, Frankensteins, and mummies always interested me.

That would be interesting book as well. Something with Frankenstein type and mummy types. Not too interested in the liches.

Still if I am looking forward to this book as it is the one that has me wanting to read it over any others I have seen.

Just because you bring it up. I like Twilight. I like Dracula. I enjoyed the stories written by Anne Rice. I am an Old School Vampire Player. I also enjoy New World of Darkness Vampire. All of them are reasonable and acceptable interpretations of Vampires, a mythological creature. Vampires are represented in different ways by every culture they pop up in. In all honesty, of all of them interpretations I have seen of Vampires, if you read the books and really think about it, Twilights Vampires are the most terrifying. All of the power and none of the weaknesses.

Back on topic. I am looking forward to this book, and hoping that there is support for Dhampir that do not embrace their heritage. Also hoping that nothing reminiscent of Twilight is in there.:P

Oh, I have nothing wrong with someone liking Twilight. There is plenty of werewolf things I have seen that I don't like. I dislike people (I have experienced it) that think it is how vampires are. I personally think Bram Stoker's Dracula is one that is the scariest I could think of. I feel like him letting Jonathon Harker survive was his only mistake.

Vampires are full of differences and I even enjoy playing ones that are trying to work at being good. I also enjoy playing hunters though that is something I have gotten to do little of. I am hoping to do that with this book.


Well hopefully this one will do for Dhampir that the other books did for Aasimar and Tiefling.

I also heard that this one will have a new format, is that correct?

The entire Player Companion line of books, starting with the Varisia book (if memory serves), is in for a revamp as far as format is concerned. Sounds like very exciting stuff.

As a player in the old World of Darkness and also a fan of Anne Rice's line of books, I like my vampire to burn in the sunlight unless they have done something to prepare themselves.

Having said that this book should be really interesting for making semi-living impaired character.

The way description makes it sound is as if there rules in this book to play as these vampires not just Dhampir versions.

Hmmm ... I'm now thinking this could be the basis for an awesome mini-campaign. The characters start off at low levels in a land overrun by vampires, and have to both survive and eventually prevail. I'm thinking something like Daybreakers.

Probably not enough for a long-running campaign or an adventure path, but certainly enough for a few games, minimum.


Great. Now I have to go and look at adding yet another subscription.

Paizo, you're really dipping into my drinking budget!

At the very least I will be picking up this book.

I will be getting this book..but I doubt I'll ever use it..the subject matter and the basic premise leave me cold..and with concerns that PF is going in a direction it should not even look at.


Question for Mr. James Jacobs on this. We'll we be seeing some of the following material:

A vampire strain akin to Ravenloft's version of the Nosferatu (aka no energy drain ability and less strong/tough but more beautiful and human-like [especially after feeding] plus capable of inflicting more powerful domination of victims through it's blood drain, can maintain control of it's spawn during the day, and can regenerate [even after slain] when exposed to moonlight)?

Anti-Vampire Options for Firearms and Ammunition?

A better version of the Vampire Hunter Archetype (for the Inquisitor class)? Very serious on this one. The one we got now kinda lacks that undead-slaying OOMPH ya dig?

Better defined rules on how to permanently slay a vampire via it's weaknesses (instead of having to find the vampire's coffin, filling's mouth with holy waffers/water, chop it's head off, the burn both the head and body [this can be a BIT TEDIOUS as you can imagine]). Wouldn't simply killing it and reducing it to ash via fire be enough?

Better defined vampire weaknesses (amending it's Damage Reduction to be DR 10/good, fire, silver, and wood and possibly giving it water vulnerability as well [like a 3.5 Crawling Head's Water Vulnerability])?

You know, perhaps instead of a new vampiric strain with all the extra stuff I mentioned in my post above it might be a better idea to just include new vampiric abilities:

Blood Domination (Su) (CR +1)
A victim of the vampire’s Blood Drain special attack must make a Will save or suffer the effects of a more potent version of a normal vampire’s Dominate special attack. The effect persists until a break enchantment spell is cast upon the victim or the vampire is slain.

Moonlight Regeneration (Su) (CR +1)
The vampire gains regeneration 5 (magic and silver) when either it or its remains (even if its remains are reduced to fine ash) are exposed to direct moonlight. Magical moonlight does not count as direct moonlight in this case. This ability allows the vampire to be restored to life (or unlife as it where) after it is slain.

Or perhaps alternate vampiric weaknesses (in order to tone down the sheer power a vampire can often bring to bear against a party of adventures). Perhaps the vampire’s vampiric strain has been “diluted” over the years and thus abnormalities have sprouted up:

Positive Energy Afflicted (Su) (CR -1)
Before attaining it’s unlife the vampire was a creature possessing a class that often channeled positive energy (such as a cleric or paladin). The channeling of this energy in it’s life has led to the vampire becoming infused (or rather afflicted) with a lingering amount of positive energy in it’s unlife. The vampire does not possess the Energy Drain Special Attack other vampires possess is.

Water Vulnerability (Su) (CR -1)
Water affects the vampire in the same manner that acid affects most living creatures. Water deals 1d6 points of damage to the vampire per round of exposure except in the case of total immersion, which deals 10d6 points of damage per round. Attacks involving water (such as a thrown vial) count as one round of exposure unless stated otherwise (such as a tsunami spell or a bronze dragon’s tidal wave ability).

Also, I know Paths of Prestige just came out and it would be really REALLY AWESOME if we got a Prestige Class to AUGMENT the Inquisitor's Vampire Hunter archetype. Paizo could even do the same thing with a Vampire Hunter prestige class that they did with the Winter Witch prestige class (aka only allow the taking of the class when one fully acquires all the abilities of the archetype of the same name).

As for abilities for a Vampire Hunter prestige class, the ability to Channel Energy, becoming immune to an undead's "Create Spawn" ability, and even gaining a "Final Death" ability which allows the hunter to permanently kill an undead with the Rejuvenation ability or a vampire whose HD equals the Vampire Hunters. Finally, perhaps we could get a Ammunition, Pellets (Silver) option for Gunslingers looking to use shotguns and blunderbusses against those pesky bloodsuckers! ^_^

I suspect Wellard is concerned that Paizo is following current popular trends; vampires and werewolves are big at the moment so they may want to cash in on the demand. I suspect a similar motivator came about for Blizzard with the Worgen race.

While I appreciate some people wish to play vampires and the like, I've never really seen them as a staple and I'd have thought that some of the other 'half-breeds' would have seen a Companion book before the dhampir.

Nonetheless, Paizo is a company and they have to make a profit, so of market research tells them vampires are hot property then they need to listen to that, I guess.

Absolutely, but as a GM who primarily plays in PbP format I would be reluctant to accept a dhampir unless I was playing an evil-only game due to their drawbacks with regards healing and party cohesion. I suspect a lot of other GMs will be in the same boat.

Way of the Wicked re-flavoured to vampires might be awesome though.


Are Nosferatu dhampirs butt ugly powerhouses? I hope this is a yes.

It's funny you mention that. In Book IV of "Way of the Wicked" there is an outline for running the AP entirely with vampires entitled "Empire of Night". Instead of winning the nation for Asmodeus instead you are transforming Talingarde into a kingdom governed by vampires.
