Ninja versus Vikings!

Chapter 2: "Night of Frozen Shadows"
by Greg A. Vaughan

A faceless menace stalks the viking empire. For decades a sinister band of assassins has watched and waited, hiding among the rugged people of Kalsgard, capital of the fierce Lands of the Linnorm Kings. In all this time their mysterious prey has lain hidden away, but no longer. With their quarry revealed, death stalks the streets of a city of hardy warriors and viking raiders. Having traveled from distant lands to this notorious city, the heroes prepare to take their first steps on an expedition into some of the world’s most ferocious wilderness. Yet nothing is ever easy in dangerous Kalsgard, and soon they find themselves targeted by mysterious assassins. Can the heroes defend themselves and their friends from the blades of supernatural killers? Or will they meet their ends amid the ice and snow?

This volume of Pathfinder Adventure Path includes:

  • “Night of Frozen Shadows,” a Pathfinder RPG adventure for 4th-level characters, by Greg A. Vaughan.
  • A trek through the crowded and deadly streets of Kalsgard, frigid capital of the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, by Matthew Goodall.
  • Insights into the ways and worship of the goddess Shelyn, deity of beauty, love, and music, by Sean K Reynolds.
  • Murder and mystery in the Pathfinder’s Journal, by Dave Gross.
  • Four new monsters, by Jesse Benner and Sean K Reynolds.

Each monthly full-color softcover Pathfinder Adventure Path volume contains an in-depth adventure scenario, stats for several new monsters, and support articles meant to give Game Masters additional material to expand their campaign. Pathfinder Adventure Path volumes use the Open Game License and work with both the Pathfinder RPG and the world’s oldest fantasy RPG.

Good First Half, Meh Second Half

3/5

Like a lot of modules, this one has somewhat inconsistent quality. The section where the PCs are investigating Kalsgard is pretty fun. They're trying to secure a guide and solve a mystery while all the while trying to elude the notice of a shadowy ninja organization. The Notoriety system is a cool idea, where the PCs will slowly attract the notice of the ninjas. Notoriety is gained slowly at the beginning, and much, much more quickly later, with increasingly severe consequences. The idea is cool, but the execution can be lacking a bit and it might fall flat at your table. The first issue is that Notoriety might be gained so slowly that your table completes the investigation before anything bad or interesting happens. This would be a shame, because the Notoriety scenarios are pretty cool, and I think do a good job of making it feel like the PCs are under siege by forces that they cannot effectively strike back at. Even if your players do manage to gain Notoriety, it feels unlikely that there's enough time for the effects listed in the book to come to fruition, unless your players are really inefficient. The reason is that the investigation, as written, really doesn't take that long in-game. So chances are, the PCs will gain some Notoriety, but will avoid the stuff that happens when the Notoriety gets really high. The problem is, a lot of the really cool stuff happens at really high Notoriety.

The Kalsgard investigation is pretty entertaining. I liked how it took players on a tour through Ulfen culture. It really did feel like it did a lot with a very interesting setting. You do have to pay attention to the investigation and do a lot of work to make sure that there aren't dead ends, or red herrings, or to make sure the players don't skip steps and do it out of order, which is very easy for them to do. It's a a sandbox scenario, but without quite enough content to make the sandbox work as well as it should.

Luckily, Kalsgard is a great setting if you'd like to add stuff, and I would highly recommend adding stuff. Delaying the investigation beats lets the Notoriety pile up, and helps avoid the players solving the whole thing in 2-3 in-game days.

The final dungeon is just ok. It isn't as good as Brinewall from the first module. A lot of the encounters feel repetitive, and if the PCs leave to rest, they'll restock with more repetitive encounters. This makes sense from a story perspective, but in game terms it's not a lot of fun and I handwaved the reinforcement mechanics away. It's not a bad dungeon or anything; rather, it just feels average. When one considers the lore of the dungeon, it feels like there could have been a lot more going on inside.

The actual module is hard to rate. My players had a blast with the module, but it was mostly due to stuff that was added. However, the sandbox nature of the adventure and the coolness of the locale make homebrewing some sections easy. As with all APs modules, some work needs to be done to make the story smoother, but it's not very difficult to do so. So I'll say that the first half is a fun playground to add whatever you want, and the final dungeon needs some love to make it pop more.

Non-sensical, dreadful writing; must skip

1/5

This might be the most lazily, poorly written module I've ever read. Both you and your players will hate this. You won't lose anything by making your own Jade Regent part 2, as next to nothing happens, and you already know the macguffin you'll end up with. I'll keep it short:

* Every location and encounter had as much thought and detail as someone saying "how cool are ninjas?". No effort put into making this interesting/engaging at all.
* No motivations or backgrounds for any NPC/villain. Zero. Names and stat blocks only. Enjoy homebrewing that into a convoluted plot.
* Railroading the PCs, in the worst possible way - that is, the writer thinks it's not. His go to method of trying to make it an open world, is to limit anything the PCs can learn, and keep them confused. Not interested, mind you, just confused. This could be forgivable, if it weren't for the huge leaps in logic that the players are supposed to make.
* Opportunities for RP and investigation are extremely limited. Most only exist because you're in Kalsgard. Guess what? You can be in Kalsgard and not do this module!

Summary: you will hate this, but not as much as your players.

A solid follow up, runs well in PbP

4/5

Like many GMs, I run the bulk of my games in a Play-by-Post format, and my gaming group and I have never physically met. We are, however, attempting to become the first group to ever successfully complete a Paizo Adventure Path in PbP over on Myth-Weavers.com, and Night of Frozen Shadows was our second stop on that journey.

Part One of Jade Regent, The Brinewall Legacy, was probably my personal favorite module ever. Paizo really brought its A-game on that adventure, and it flowed effortlessly from a simple kill the goblins mission to the beginnings of a globe-trotting, epic campaign to save a people and restore the honor of an exiled noble family. It was always going to be a tough act to follow.

In Night of Frozen Shadows, we have a follow up that goes for a different feel than its predecessor. Where Brinewall was tightly scripted and a bit of a railroad, Frozen Shadows takes more of a sandbox route. It was also an investigation heavy module, wherein the players seek out clues and attempt to recover an artifact important to the noble family they find themselves in service to.

Along the way are plenty of opportunities for in-depth role-playing, and some great set piece battles.

Did I mention that in this module there are ninjas and vikings at the same time? I should probably mention that. The battle where the ninja initially show themselves was a very memorable one.

Difficulty wise, I found most of the encounters in this module underpowered vs. my melee heavy group, but increasing the difficulty of these encounters was usually no tougher than adding a few more bad guys.

The end battle, however, proved to be very tough and the BBEG of the module nearly caused a TPK. We played it straight, but it was a nail biter and the PCs just barely made it out alive.

In all, though I made more modifications to this module than the last, I find that Paizo's adventures support that kind of thing, and their flexibility is a feature in my mind, not a bug.

Likewise, I thought the change of pace from the first module was also a good thing. The city of Kalsgard that served as a setting for the bulk of this module was well fleshed out in this installment and my group had fun exploring it.

The only modifications I had to make for PbP were the cutting and / or consolidating of encounters in the end dungeon, but that is pretty standard (and something I’d recommend for my fellow PbP GMs.)

In all, I'd give Night of Frozen Shadows 4.5 stars if I could, but since I already maxed out my vote for The Brinewall Legacy, and this module wasn't quite as much to my liking, I'm going to go with four. It was a solid second installment for what is shaping up to be a great campaign.

Not the best in the series

2/5

I really didn't like this module. To me it felt like a drag as my players were really anticipating getting to Tian Xia and had to waste their low-mid levels here with Vikings. I love vikings! I want a Viking AP but here they feel like a burden rather than the highlight something like that should be.

Pros
- Being in Karlsgaard opens opportunities to RP
- If your into the caravan rules (which Im not) you get to go into the bookkeeping of buying and selling stuff
- Tengu Ninjas
- The theme of corruption fleshes out more

Cons
- Several silly and annoying encounters - one of which is a TPK in the waiting.
- Another big ol' castle

I just simulated a download of the PDF, and didn't get this error. Which version did you download, what program are you viewing in and what behavior are the bookmarks displaying? Are they jumping to the first page of the PDF or just not doing anything when clicked?

D'oh! Didn't even think of trying it with Adobe, I've been using Foxit Reader for so long. Yeah, bookmarks work fine in Adobe, but for some reason not in Foxit. Weird.

Same problem with the interactive maps. The switches don't work in PDF Xchange that I like to use.

I have no clue why the bookmarks wouldn't work in FoxIt (anybody else with Foxit having that problem?) but I'm not the least bit surprised that non-Adobe apps would have issues with the interactive maps. I'd strongly recommend you stick with Adobe Reader for the interactive maps.

Foxit 4.3.1.0xxxx

Some bookmarks in the single file pdf jump to the front page, some jump to the correct page. Have not spent a lot of time figuring out the pattern.

Map pdf seems to work except I can't tell the difference in the player vs. gm view of the last map and the upper level of the ship has no tags (should there be any?).

This sounds like it may be caused by Foxit, as this PDF was created to backwards compatible to Reader 5. As for the maps, it is better to view them in Reader/Acrobat for functionality. The difference between player and GM view on the last map is that the buttons should toggle the hidden rooms at the bottom of the map. The ship map does not have tags in the adventure.

Having skimmed through the book, I must say you have outdone yourself in the art department AGAIN. The number of swarmencounters will give my players nightmares for years to come, though :)

Starting to wonder what kind of art budget APs have Oo

I was providing a data point for Vic.

The maps are fine, rooms and secret door disappear.

As I very rarely use the bookmarks, I'll keep with Foxit as it is so much lighter than Adobe.

Yeah bookmarks work fine in PDF Xchange. I do keep adobe around for the few things that only works for it. Kinda like explorer. I hate it but sometimes you just got to use it.

Hmm if you still don't have it by this evening you might want to make a post in the customer support forum thread and ask them to check your account and see if their is a problem. I don't recall it taking over a week for them to do all the orders. I could be wrong of course but I would still post in the CS forum if you don't have a email by this evening.

Dark Mistress had nothing to do with it, it was the Gremlins, especially the one with the mohawk.

You are going to get the e-mail in 3, 2, 1, now.

I don't have mine either (and I live down the street from their warehouse). I think they're just behind schedule. Judging from the lack of chatter on the AP forum, it probably hasn't gone out to a lot of people yet.

I wouldn't panic that you're singled out.

I'm still waiting as well.

The interactive maps are great, if you're going to print or screen shot them.

Only playing over VTT I like to extract my maps so they're completely clean, larger size and without tags or grids on them. However, the maps in the AP pdf have the grid hard-coded, which makes it harder to use in a VTT (because the grid on the map rarely makes a perfect match with the grid provided in the various VTTs out there).

From what I have heard, there was some problems running subscriptions this time around. It was super darn slow. I was helping out in the warehouse when I could, but it has been a busy week for me, so I couldn't help as much as I normally do. Hopefully everyone's subs get finished soon!

On 7/28 I got the in the next week or so email...

On 8/1 the paizo website said I have bought this module...

On 8/9 my paizo account said it shipped on the 9th...

Today 8/13 I still have not gotten the it has shipped email that will let me at the pdf...

So...has it shipped...or is it languishing in a turkish prison being forced to do...I can't even force myself to think about what my poor it has shipped email is being subjected to...

Will I get this email SOON ?

Will I get my module first...as I seem to have paid for it awhile ago ?

Will I be kidnapped by the wolf women of Sirius 5 and forced to be a towel person at their nitrogen pudding baths first ?

They seem to be a bit slower this month than normal. I got my it shipped email on the 7th and still don't have mine yet either. I really expected it yesterday or today to show up. But I am not worried yet, sometimes they are just slow for some reason. (by they I mean the postal service)

The charge went through on 9/7/11. You should see it delivered an estimated 4-8 business days after the ship by date of September 9th. (Sept 15-21).

Not at Paizo's behest. I cannot make guarantees for other persons, businesses or entities.

My subscription shipment cost this month is $51.22, and suddenly today there is a mysterious charge on my account for $51.22... but from DESPINOS TIRE SERVICE ??? Is that a Paizo subsidiary?

I like the art in the printed book very much. It's pixelated and kind of jaggy on my computer screen, but on paper is looks fantastic. I think this is the best AP since Curse of the Crimson Throne and Rise of the Runelords in terms of in-book art.

Also, I'd like to say that I enjoy that the artists are splitting time between Hayato, Sajan, Feiya and Lini in their artwork, and, thanks to what must be a very strong effort on Paizo's part, the art accurately and easily identifiably depicts them doing things that happen in the module-- something that Kingmaker, Carrion Crown and Serpent's Skull lacked.

Anybody have an idea if any of the material presented in this particular Adventure Path will be approved for PFS usage?

Mine says that I purchased it on the 1st. Yet here we are at the 14th, and I still haven't gotten a "shipping" email (I've also checked that it's not in my downloads, in case I missed said email).

I bundled a bunch of stuff with it, including some 3PP stuff, so maybe that's the reason for the delay. I'll be patient for a bit. If it gets to next Monday and I still don't have it, I'll start to engage customer service.

The module arrived at high noon today, 14 sept 11...

The awesomeness of the module makes up for the lack of the sirius 5 wolfwomen...

I just got mine today (I'm in Canada), so depending on where you are in the world it could take more time.

I do wish Paizo would allow a tracking option for packages, as then we can tell where it is.

There was an issue with the Golden Spear not being correct in our inventory system. Your order was shipped today 9/21.

Please keep in mind that if you feel something might be wrong with your order, (such as no shipping email and your order history shows its still pending), you can post in the customer service forums or shoot us an email (customer.service at paizo.com) and we are happy to investigate.
