Hundreds of New Items!

Whether your character’s in the market for an exotic weapon, a new pet, or an unusual alchemical item to help in exploring old tombs, this book has it covered. Adventurer’s Armory is the go-to sourcebook for supplementing your character’s gear; all of the items are nonmagical and most of them are priced low enough that even 1st-level heroes can afford them!

Customize your equipment for any given adventure with the following:
  • New weapons and armor!
  • New alchemical items
  • Skill aids and class-specific items!
  • New poisons and black-market goods!
  • Travelers’ comforts, such as cooking supplies and tents!
  • Adventurer favorites, like bladed boots and spring-loaded wrist sheaths!
  • New uses, rules, and tricks for mundane gear!
  • Divine items that react to channeled energy!
  • Power components for spells!
  • New traits!
  • An alchemist cohort to keep you supplied in the field!

This player-friendly Pathfinder Companion works best with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook or the 3.5 version of the world’s oldest fantasy roleplaying game. Although suitable for play in any fantasy world, it is optimized for the Pathfinder Chronicles campaign setting.

Each bimonthly 32-page Pathfinder Companion contains several player-focused articles exploring the volume’s theme as well as short articles with innovative new rules for social, magic, religious, and combat-focused characters, as well as a persona section detailing helpful NPCs and traits to better anchor the player to the campaign.

Good stuff

4/5

The first 20 pages of this book are mundane equipment, weapons and armor, a lot of which is fairly useful esp for low level parties. Players into clever roleplaying can find a lot of fun here: false-bottomed cups, skeleton keys, marbles, sneezing powder, tethers for your weapons etc. This section reminds me of Aurora's Whole Realms Catalog from 2nd ed. Then there are 2 pages with 2 feats centered on your scabbard or shield, each of which allows you to use multiple tricks if you have certain requisite skill ranks. The next 2 pages are mundane religious items that a cleric can use as a focus for channeling energy, which can grant some minor bonuses. The next 2 pages have rules for using alchemical items to supplement the material components of certain spells - I quite liked these rules. For example, you can use a tanglefoot bag to boost your black tentacles spell. The next 2 pages are descriptions of some NPCs; I would've preferred more of the alchemical substances. The final 2 pages are a couple feats and some equipment relating to social interactions, like disguise stuff. The whole book is full color of course. The inside front & back covers is a weapons chart. Overall, I really like it.

Left me wanting more.

3/5

There are several VERY good ideas in this book. Unfortunately, there clearly wasn't enough room to expand on the good ones. They bring in some interesting new ideas (equipment traits and tricks) and a handful of really nifty new mundane items.

My major complaint with this book, and the reason I'm only rating it 3 stars is the weapons. I've read the developers reasoning on why they take such a homogenous view on weapon design, but I can't help but feel like they missed a major opportunity to make some really interesting weapon changes. What I got was longsword bottom line...anything better requires a feat to use. Do you really want to spend the feat to wield a longsword that you can trip with? Or one with a slightly better crit range? Its hard enough to find a good reason to spend a feat on an exotic weapon.

Overall, a good book, a decent effort. I won't gripe about grammar or errors (who cares, really?) but I do care about the content. A passable book, but do yourself and your group a favor... look for a really good splat book on gear, or better yet, write some for yourselves.

3/5

Will proofread for food...

Or for legitimite PDFs once published.

We will buy it anyway but...

3/5

I have to agree w/ other posters , pay the proofreaders more , or proofread it before you send it to China for printing.

I also would have liked more pics to use in game.

Great

4/5

I really liked this product. I was worried that this would step on the toes of Luven Lightfinger's Gear & Treasure Shop a bit. They may have some overlap, but not much. The two products compliment each other rather nicely, I think. I haven't had time to make an in depth read of the book, but since it is only 30+ pages, it won't take long. This book gives some good flavor options for all classes as well as some expanded equipment lists.

If you worked at Paizo, you would know that I very rarely ever play the "CEO" card. I make suggestions, and if the rest of the editorial team likes them, then they get picked up. If not, then there is usually a really good reason why not. We almost always make decisions on products as a group consensus effort, which I think makes for a better product list and a more enthused editorial group.

I would bet there is an excellent chance of it.

Some of the item art in the book may be reprints of existing art from already available item cards.

Your likely correct, but I still bet there is plenty of new art in this that can be used in future item decks.

They may have even commissioned all new art simply because it could be used in this book, then turn around and is it in the decks. We'll see.

This is intended to be the be-all, end-all book of gear (not counting "Eastern" weapons, not counting firearms)

So will there be a decent set of firearms rules forthcoming some time? The rules in the Campaign Setting are fairly crazy and don't seem to make an aweful amount of sense. What with flintlock pistols sitting alongside percusion cap revolvers and shotguns.

On an associated note, will the Armory be including other wonders of technology such as clocks, watches and printing press? All of these are supposed to appear in the campaign setting but no costs are available anywhere. A little bit of tech love would be nice.

Contributor

IIRC, the AA book does include costs for clocks and printing presses.

No comment on the guns (from me, at least).

I run a book store and printing press in our Council of Thieves campaign, it will be good to see the Paizo mechanics for this.

The Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book for 3.0 had scroll organizers and potion belts in it so that you could draw said items for free, especially handy for those times that you need a scroll or a potion to save an ally this round with said item and you have to move to them and use your standard action to perform the saving.

I don't like making such items magic items, as it seems to be that a cleverly built piece of equipment should be able to do the job. Obviously the equipment from the FRCS can't be used, since its not OGL, but given that swift actions didn't exist back then, it doesn't seem like it would be too hard to come up with an item that lets you assign X number of scrolls or potions that can be drawn as a swift action for emergency situations.

The scroll organizer didn't give any special notes other than it stores scrolls. The potion belt states you can draw a potion as a free action, but not the scroll organizer.

Apart from the cover, we've yet to see any previews of this, and I'm always a fan of art posts or previews of content snippets. Just sayin' ;-)

Well, yes. But those are all mixed in with other non-previews, and the Community Use Policy doesn't allow for cropping and such, making use of that artwork difficult. But beggars can't be choosers, and I really liked Sean's inventory tracking sheet.

Yeah... um... turns out that we got a lot higher retailer interest on this one than usual. A *lot* higher. As in, we sold out before we actually received our shipment. We're keeping enough to cover subscriptions and preorders, but the rest is going to distribution, so if you haven't already ordered, you'll have to wait for the reprint, which will probably take a month or two.

*Update: we're going to do a quick recce and see if we can't find a way to reserve some more copies for paizo.com customers to cover the interval before the reprint arrives.

Wow, Vic! Great news, if not a little annoying for people who don't have a copy accounted for.

Quite happy to have my PDF of this one. The bits I've looked at are great. One question though:

Spoiler:
On the back cover (inside) the falcata is shown as a 19-20/x2 crit weapon and the aldori dueling sword is shown as 19-20/x3. In the campaign setting the falcata was the 19-20/x3 and the dueling sword was 19-20/x2. Has this changed, or is this not what was intended. Thanks

Talomyr - thanks, I was just about to post that question as well. Before I noticed the Aldori I was cheering what I thought was a fix to a crazy weapon.

Great job guys! I've been reading through it, and nothing I've seen is over the top crazy. Lots of really really interesting ways of using items, abilities, etc. The Traits and Channel Foci are particularly interesting and well done (except the Ancestral Weapon.. come on!).

Thankyou for the prompt response. The issue with me is I like to pool all my Paizo purchases in one go as often as I can, as the shipping to the UK tends to be fairly expensive. If it is likely to be a couple of months, I guess I will have to make my other purchases without it :( I want Rivers Run Red too much to wait.

Aldori dueling sword should have a x2 crit modifier; it's like a longsword, but its exotic benefit is you can use it with Weapon Finesse (like a rapier) and still get 1.5 Str bonus to damage when using it two-handed (unlike a rapier).

Falcata should have a x3 crit modifier; it's like a longsword, but its exotic benefit is the increased threat range.

Also,

Spoiler:
Rob takes 100 points of damage!

Our book trade distributor was ordering more than they actually need right away, so we've managed to hold back enough copies to (probably) get us through on paizo.com until the second printing arrives (probably about 6-8 weeks). Order away!

Sean K Reynolds wrote:
Aldori dueling sword should ...

With apologies to Rob, I think there's another goof with that back chart. I believe there's a missing entry on the Special line of the Exotic Two-handed weapons:

The Garrote appropriately lists "grapple, see text".
The Mancatcher lists "reach, trip, see text".
I believe "reach, trip, see text" should instead be on the Meteor Hammer (formerly reach, disarm, trip, with text). The Mancatcher probably should have "reach, grapple, see text", which may be responsible for the confusion.

This does readd some confusion to the Meteor Hammer, and whether it threatens at 5', 10', or depending on which of its fighting styles is used. I know you had previously stated it remained 10' in both styles, but that was a while ago.

Ah thanks Paul, didn't see that.

I was surprised not to see the katar, tri-bladed mentioned explicitly. I know it states that items not mentioned explicitly can stay as they are and used as is; but I would still have expected it to become a x3 weapon instead of x4.

This is just a recognition of the good work done by Paizo and the wonders that call themselves Werecabbages. I happened to notice in my glance through the PDF that two items mentioned in PC Pearls are also in Adventurer's Armory. They are Powder (Flour) and Marbles. Great minds run alike.

I am really looking forward to the public PDF release for this. One question for the subscribers who already have a copy:

Are there prices for hirelings included in this work (beyond the trained and untrained costs given in the Pathfinder Rulebook)?

It would be nice to get an idea of how much different hirelings should be paid (especially for more skilled individuals). And please don't quote the Profession rules at me, because they are seriously broken.

This might be a silly question, but I wanted to confirm how much damage a monk with brass knuckles deals, do they deal their monk unarmed damage with each attack or do they deal 1d3 (adjusted for size)?
