@joker 27: Recruitment closed last night, I'm afraid. Don't worry, I used to be very active here. If this "dip my toe back into the water" is successful, there will be many other recruitments in the future. XD
I feel like this is a bummer since a) the thread began as an interest check, b) the completed selection of houserules rules were only shared a day before the first stage of recruitment was closed, and c) recruitment was closed with basically no indication that it would be happening or that one had to signal interest to be able to submit. I (and probably others) was waiting for a more typical Recruitment to go up once an AP / rules had all been settled on.
To be clear, I'm not expecting you to change anything now or open it back up - there's certainly enough interest already for you to move forward! I just wanted to express the feelings of frustration as something for you to consider w/ future recruitments. Either way, I'll be looking forward to the next one!
Been a hellish week, but I am still interested & have my character partially completed! Crunch is done, I just want to flesh out the backstory some more.
So, for stats, what if we did any array which you can assign how you want. What is the maximum number of stats one needs for MAD, 3?
3 would be reasonable, yeah. It also depends of course on what the array looks like. It's worth noting that starting at 8th would give two advancements, and that without magic items, the lack of +Attr items would affect a few builds.

I'm not sure how to do equipment b/c the prices are all wrong for my setting idea -- pcs will have ready access to high end technology items like power armor, laser guns, all terrain vehicles etc.
Maybe wealth doesn't matter to start, then? And it's more "choose whatever"? Or "choose 2 of these, 1 of these", etc.
though, also, maybe we should try to keep it a little more grounded, as a dark fantasy. So I think maybe we should just go with the Core ancestries, at least to start.
Faun and Halfling are in Demon Lord's Companion and Demon Lord's Companion Vol 2 has Ferren (catfolk), Dryads, Molekins, Naga, Slyphs, and Yerath (bug-people), but yeah, that's totally understandable!
For those who do have other books, would other races be approved, or should we stick with the core book? Was thinking specifically about a faun or sylph.
I'm wondering - is there anything more you guys need from me to make characters, or should I just give you time?
I'm good! Just trying to flesh out the build itself. I'm not a huge fan of the Biohacker class as a thing, but skipping it entirely also feels wrong for my character, so I'm trying to find a blend between Envoy / Biohacker / Operative that I'm happy with.
Of my above ideas, I'm probably looking more at "explore / map the universe, find some xenos" and less about Curing the Babel virus.
[EDIT]
Actually, I'm somewhat new to Starfinder, so I am a bit confused by the equipment outline above.

Weapons: Characters may begin with any melee weapon up to item level 9, flame weapon up to level 4, projectile weapon up to level 6, frag grenades, and web grenades.
Does that mean shock or cryo weapons are no-go? Where violence is semi-frowned upon I was thinking a flamethrower is maybe not my best option.
Also are frag/web grenades level 1?
Also are weapon modifications allowed? do those come out of the 3k starting funds?

Armor: powered armor up to level 9. Or, the reinforced EVA suit, estex suit, second skin, stationwear, or D-Suit of any level.
Confirming that "any level" means "up to character level +2".

Other Equipment: All characters begin play with a tier 3 computer, either external or implanted.
Those appear to be huge, are they miniaturized?
Also are there... not actually vehicle creation rules anywhere?
Welcome back! Very excited for this, and am working on a concept now. I'm definitely looking at a Scientist / Explorer-type, trying to pin down if they'll be more interested in continuing Ifera's work, researching extra-terrestrial genetics, or working on curing the Babel virus. Or some combination thereof.
Apologies for the billion following questions in my excitement.

The Babel Virus also happens to grant magical powers. Those who have the Babel Virus are suddenly able to do incredible things that no human could possibly do. Therefore, having Babel Initiates around can be extremely valuable. Despite that, Babel Initiates tend to stick together in their own small communities. Sometimes the Babel and Non-Babel communities exchange things, either for trade or for mutual defense. They are still able to communicate symbolically and with action, the two groups just keep their distance.
1. How much fear is there around those who have it / spellcasters in general? New Alexandria / Nordic Frog Beach sound, as places of science / intelligence / compassion, that they would be accepting of those with the Babel virus, but at the same time, lofty goals for the universe and striving for scientific advancement are things that could be At Risk by the virus. Are there stipulations around those who have it?

While searching for loot, Scrud came upon an alien probe that infected all those who used it with a virus that spread through speech and turned people on one another. It did so by taking away peoples' ability to understand one another and replacing it with the ability to understand only people who have the Babel Virus. Babel Initiates cannot intelliglbly speak except with those who have the Babel Virus. Those without the Babel Virus that hear a Babel Initiate speak will receive a piercing headache, like there's something trying to get in to their head that doesn't belong there. Those of weak willpower will gain the Babel Virus, though strong-willed people sometimes can hold it off for minutes at a time. When Babel spreads unannounced through groups of people, it causes widespread chaos.
We call this a virus because of how it spreads, but it also sounds like something that Has No Downsides if it were to infect the entire population. Sort of a multipart question related.
2. Is there a potential downside that we just don't know about? I guess what I'm asking is how much research have we actually done into the Babel virus? And is research being done on it with the interest of "curing" it or more about learning how it works?
3. If it is a virus that does want to spread, do those who are infected feel any kind of compulsion to try and affect others? And this relates to my question above about how those who are infected are perceived by others.
4. And related (again), would there be cults/sects/organizations of those infected who do want to affect everyone else?
leinathan wrote:
Verbal speech with someone who doesn't have the Babel virus would be impossible. Limited telepathy also wouldn't work. You would have to use sign language or spread the Babel virus to communicate with people.
5. The Babel virus has been around for some 240+ years, since we discovered it before Nordic Frog Beach was founded, right? In that time has there been a standard sign language established?
6. Not unrelated, does the Babel virus affect reading/writing, or is it just auditory?
[EDIT]Readings say "A person infected with Babel can thus understand any language, whether it was written or spoken, and whether or not it was created by creatures of the same species." - so creating a sign language may actually have been somewhat easy, since those with Babel can still understand others, just not the inverse?[/EDIT]

There is contact with the Formians, a peaceful, scientific race of spiderlike aliens from a cold, icy wasteland. The Formians are known as the Anansi to the humans, who restored the Anansi to life using cortical stack technology and brilliant neuroscience. The formians had been driven extinct by the Dark Ones, shadowy and ancient aliens who roam Dark Space. However, human scientists were able to model Formian brains from their remains and brought the species back. The Formians have since re-settled on their home world and begun exploring once again.
7. Do we know how long ago the Formians went extinct?
8. Related, how long has it been since we began bringing them back?
9. Also related, the readings mention the Amphids as originally being natives of Nordic Frog Beach. Have there been efforts to bring that species back in the same way we did with Formians?
10. Lashunta, undines, selves, orcs, and sylphs don't actually exist as things, formians were extinct before we met them, and presumably most Maeglin (with the exception of Nel-Tesk and anything he has created so far) have died out. Are there actually any sentient alien species that we're in contact with in any way? It sounds like there is vermin/animal life, but perhaps not of an intelligence?
11. I saw in the reading material that Esmerelda Gonzalez is 95. With medical advances and etc, what's human life expectancy now? I believe in Starfinder it's ~120 years, but wasn't sure if it's different in this world.
Gestalt: I say maybe/yes if there are only 3-4 characters, but no if there are 4-6. It's a nice way to round out roles & characters when you're tight on players.
Third Party: Definitely Elephant in the Room. Spheres of Power/Might or Path of War could be fun?
Tone: I think it depends. For the 1880s or 1998 time, I think "dark but not hopeless" hits the sweet spot. For 1940 which is already a dark time, I think having it more Alice-In-Wonderland light would be a nice juxtaposition.
Hi leinathan! Good to see you back around these parts. I'm very interested in checking this out but may not get to it for a few days, just wanted to express excitement!
Because others might find this useful, too, the other races I found that originate in Near Space are:
- Phentomite (Alien Archive 2)
- Brenneri (Alien Archive 3)
- Dromada (Alien Archive 3)
- Espraksa (Alien Archive 3)
- Telia (Alien Archive 3)
Here is my own submission for a Vigilante / Monk, with tentative plans to dip into Paladin.
@ Yorick’s Requiem,
I really like your Monk / Vigilante’s backstory — and think that, if you want, Rasheeda’s feminist friend, Martella, could have introduced you to my PC, a noble girl who is not content with the ‘good-ol’-boy’s’ club — and has issues of religious freedom as you have issues of religious worship. Let me know if you’re interested in co-creating a few sentences of backstory for our PC proposals. Chances are, with so many PCs here, one or both of will be left out of the campaign — but since we’re gonna have a while to wait for the GM to select a group anyway, we may as well keep playing with our PCs.
Oh, thank you! And I like that idea a lot - it seems fitting that those in our positions would be very interested in networking possibilities. And especially with Taldor's history of banning worship, and myself worshipping a god that is all but unknown here, I'd be interested in & supportive of your work.
@Mr Nevets- no, the game starts as surface coastal and ship based and transitions to more and more under water as it goes.
In AP terms the first two volumes worth are "more" about water, then by the equivalent of Parts 3-6 it becomes increasingly more underwater.
(This is to ensure that it is possible to play a surface race using magic or other means to breath under water, and because ships are cool as well, so the goal is to blend in the "pirate-y" aspect early on as well)
I feel obligated to point out that by RAW, Sahuagin cannot breathe air - should they be treated as if they were amphibious?
Yeah, really. After days of trying to choose a combination that I was happy with, Here is my own submission, for a Vigilante / Monk, with tentative plans to dip into Paladin.
How viable would using firearms be with changing dimensions? Alternatively, will look at a DSP Vitalist. (Or something Spheres of Power/Might if those are approved).
Anton
Okay so Anton should have EDU x 2 + DEX x 2 for Occupational and INT x 2 for Personal, which is (unless you swapped any of these) a total of 160 + 50 for Occupational + 180 for Personal. It looks to me like Personal is right, but that you spent 250 on Occupational skills instead of 210? Unless you did swap something.
Ernest
Ernest should have EDU x 4 for Occupational Skills and INT x 2 for Personal, which is a total of 316 for Occupational and 160 for Personal. I'm showing you should have a total of 476 to spend, but as though you used 485. Could you double check them for me?
Well, this ended up being a pretty easy decision - I'll take all four of you. Richard Michaelson, Ernest Nuemann, Irina Ustvolskaya, and Anton Roskuszka will have the adventure of a lifetime start on Monday!
I'm still keeping an eye on this! Recruitment will be closing Friday at midnight, EST, and then I'll be spending the weekend making decisions. Let me know if y'all have any questions.
Real quick before I dig into building my character - are Spheres on the table, or should I start with standard Paizo classes? I'm feeling slightly unfocused and may be drafting a few different characters until one "speaks" to me properly, so wondering what tools I have available.
