Taryn scowls at the kobold’s durability and swings his heavy hammer at it once again.

sorry for the delay- thanks for botting. Taryn shakes his head at the prospect of slaughtering more kobolds, then swings his heavy hammer at the one that tried to stab him.

Taryn takes note when Jirri mentions approaching footsteps. He looks for a place to stand off to one side of the southern tunnel (where he won’t be seen until whoever it is enters the chamber), but near enough to the tunnel that he can charge the mysterious figure if necessary...
Half-Elf Bloodrager | HP 15/22 | AC 19 (t12/ff19) | Fort +5, Ref +2, Will +3 | sense motive +0, perception +7 (low-light vision); +2 initiative
"I'd rather see one path through to its end before we start backtracking..." Taryn answers, "who knows how many branches we'll find along each branch, trying to check all of them before moving on may be madness..." Glancing at the southern door, he adds, "I don't really want to go on alone though... do we need to vote or something? I want to continue this way."

”Well, I guess it’s not like we have volunteers lining up to check it out anyways,” Taryn answers the medic with a hint of a frown. Addressing the rest of the party, he declares, ”Carduus is right, there’s a chance my brother could be down here and there’s no way I’m turning back before I find out. It wouldn’t hurt for someone to know where we are, though, in case we don’t make it out... Kaine, Beylinda, go ahead and head back out. Let the watch know what we found here. The rest of you, pick quickly: leave with them or keep moving with us.”

Taryn shoots Carduus a surprised look. "Someone should check that for magic before you just drop it in a sack; maybe its something useful that could help us down here?"

Taryn grits his teeth in frustration as he debates chasing the fleeing kobold... if it gets reinforcements, and they attack while we fighting another group somewhere, we could be in trouble... there are more pressing concerns though... Deciding to instead deal with the immediate concern, he advances on the enemy leader and takes a swing at it with his heavy hammer.
How's the other table holding together? Would it be easier to bring the two groups together instead of (potentially) running re-recruitments for both?

Taryn charges in after Viorr and attacks the closest enemy...
not a great roll... hopefully it'll be enough to hit their flat-footed AC?

Taryn looks around somewhat anxiously and absentmindedly adjusts his grip on the large hammer he carries. "Can you tell how many voices?" he asks in a whisper. "if its only a couple we might be able to lure them out and take care of them instead of worrying they may attack at an inopportune moment... or go for help and attack us in large numbers..." perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

With his hammer at the ready, Taryn leaves Viorr a five-foot gap before following along just ahead of Dev. "Carduus is hoping, I suspect, to keep us all close enough that he can reach any of us quickly if we need healing, but far enough apart that if we run into magic-users they can't injure us all with one spell..." he explains quietly to the young warforged as they go. perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

well... I suppose 10 days was long enough for anyone who wanted to do so to chime in... "Give me a moment, Carduus," Taryn answers with half a smile, "to make sure it's not a trap." Then he finishes examining the door, for traps as well as its opening mechanism.
assuming he finds no traps...

"Them finding us isn't a good thing..." Taryn points out while following close behind Dev, "we want to find them so that we can choose when and how to engage them, or at least have some element of surprise."

Taryn nods unhappily. "I wish we had a little more certainty about which we they went," he answers, "I was kind of hoping one of you might spot some recent tracks while checking out the room. But, if this door is our best guess then let's make haste." Without awaiting any affirmation, the muscular half-elf readies his large hammer and heads off, looking for signs of recent passage (or hiding threats) as he goes. "Carduus, stay close and keep me in the light."

I didn’t add +4 for it being prone, assuming the GM would handle that, but just to clarify: my attack roll was effectively 16 against its normal AC (or flat-footed AC I suppose since this is a surprise round).

Taryn grits his teeth and tightens his grip on his large hammer. it's so dark down here... what I wouldn't give for a starry night's sky right now, at least then I'd be able to see these blasted things... it was never this dark in Stormhome... readying an action to attack the first enemy I see

"What's the matter, Viorr?" Taryn asks as the pace slows, "does something seem off to you?" As he speaks he looks around and listens carefully for any signs of traps or ambushes... perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25

"It's Taryn," the muscly half-elf replies, pausing his descent to offer his hand to the dwarf, "and, in terms of abilities that are relevant to our current situation, I mostly crush things with my hammer. My dragonmark lets me influence the weather a little bit too, which has come in handy on more than one occasion." Is Beylinda with us? Or was that a typo from Carduus? I thought she was at table 1 and posted in our gameplay because she forgot she was supposed to use recruitment for that?

Taryn looks at the loquacious human with a raised eyebrow and then at all the new additions to the venture, almost as if noticing them for the first time. I need to be more attentive to what's going on. The hope of finally learning something about Haldoth's disappearance lifts my spirits, but it's also consumed my thoughts... how long have we been at this? half an hour, perhaps a full hour, and I don't know any of these people's names... at least I know the metal one's decent with his sword, and the sneaky one's fair with a bow... we can't let this turn into a mess like that massive group did, though... I better speak up and show some leadership before it's too late... "Alright," he says, nodding, "If we're going to be successful working as a group we need to organize a bit. Viorr will take point, clearly (since he's beginning to climb down as I speak) and I'll go next, in case he gets into trouble. You can go next, sure, uhhh Deb was it? And then Carduus in the center so he can spread around healing more easily." Looking at the dwarf he pauses for a moment. "I'm sorry, dwarf," he offers, "I don't recall your name at all... and, I'm not sure what you can do... but I know this guy--Kaine, right?--is a decent shot, so why don't you follow Carduus and, Kaine, when you're not sneaking you can follow the dwarf. El, keep guarding the rear and I'll input some new directions when necessary." Heading down the hole after Viorr, he adds, "Let's be off then. Carefully."

Taryn fidgets with his large hammer as Viorr fumbles with the torch. While he waits, he rubs and stretches his left shoulder in the hopes that it might banish some of the soreness caused by the adept's spell. Is he seriously having that much trouble or does he merely intend to go first but doesn't want to say so... Carduus has already shown that he can conjure magical light... When Viorr 'gives up' and offers to go first he nods in agreement. "I'll be right behind you," he offers falling in line, "El, why don't you cover the rear instead? You swing that sword fairly well, you can make sure we don't get overrun from behind."
hey all, sorry for the long absence! I won't bore you all with the details of how insane my summer was but now that all I have going on is work, my family, and the busiest semester I'll ever have in grad school I'm easing back into my games. Thanks for keeping Taryn around. I'm going to read through the posts I missed right now and (hopefully) have a post up this afternoon or evening.
Thanks Carduus. Truthfully, I'm overwhelmingly busy still and sadly I'm going to have to take some time away from the boards. You can bot me or write me out, or kill me off spectacularly. Thanks for the opportunity to play, I really enjoyed what I got to play of this game, and the other characters. Enjoy the rest of the game and I'll check in to see if there's a spot for me if/when I get back to the boards.

"Well," Taryn ponders looking over the faces of his allies, "I, of course, have a personal interest in looking into this further... but my associates are accustomed to being paid for such endeavors, and there's certain to be costs incurred from such an undertaking... is there any reward being offered in the case?" after the haul on that last job they may tag along just for something to do but I bet it will be an easier sell if there's the promise of some pay...

It wasn't 'the four of us', like it was a job we'd taken..." Taryn offers thoughtfully, "It was mostly me, personally, with some help from my associates. You see, Rission--one of the men I've been looking for--is a member of my House and my original contact in the city, and another is my own brother whose disappearance weeks ago... months ago by now, I suppose... but, his disappearance is what brought me to Sharn in the first place. Why, do you have any information about any of them?" diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
clearly none of these... beings have any idea how house politics work... but if I intervene it's only going to make things more complicated... best to stay out of it and hope we get paid something and get out of here soon... Taryn continues to sit quietly and eat, not doing anything to attract attention to himself.

Taryn grasps the elf's forearm and gives it a hardy shake. "Thank you," he answers with an appreciative nod. Returning to his former seat, the half-elf takes a few bites of food then leans over to Carduus and quietly mentions, "Viorr, one of the elves from the other group, is willing to help us look into our comrades' disappearance."

Taryn approaches Viorr while people are moving about and talking. He crouches next to his tenuous ally and quietly says, "excuse me, Viorr, I have a bit of a problem and I heard that you might be able to help with it... I came to Sharn because my brother was here and he went missing, and now Rission--the only member of my House I've even met in the city--has disappeared as well. Is it possible that you might be able to help me find them?"

Taryn sighs and shakes his head as Gauntlet makes his wager. for f#ck sake... is it really too much to ask to just get paid... He doesn't bother to reintroduce himself, since he's already met the lady, but when Gauntlet's first guess proves incorrect he leans towards the warforged and offers, "perhaps he is not returning because he had no intention of handing the schema over to this Merrix."

Taryn leans forward as if to speak but decides better of it and merely takes a drink instead. we should have appointed a spokesperson before beginning... there are already too many people speaking for us, and too many different versions of what we really want... best not to add to it... we'll just have to hope that one of them can get us paid and on our way... this whole job has been a mess...

Taryn nods as he finishes placing some food on his plate. Heading to his seat he says, "The men of House Orien are right. This is no back alley meeting of rogues, there are members of several of the great houses here, let us dine together and conduct our business in a manner befitting our stations." diplomacy (take 10): 10 + 7 = 17
That was my thought as well... the reasons I haven't committed yet are 1) magic overcomes DR way more often than adamantine, and 2) if I went with the cheaper +1 I could also afford a couple bull's strength potions... I probably will end up taking adamantine (since I can get that enchanted later but you can't get a magic one turned adamantine), but I have time still so I'm going to keep hemming and hawing.

sh!t... "Rission and Dharrak turned back early to report the issues in the sewer to the watch," Taryn answers, "They haven't rendezvoused with us again yet, but I expect they'll be back before the meeting." at least, I hope they will...

I don't think anyone in our group was going to mention our missing allies... we seem not to really trust the other group, and to have concerns about them strong-arming us out of our contract, so we've been avoiding showing any signs of weakness (which pointing out that we've dropped from pretty even numbers to half their number probably would be).
Half-Elf Bloodrager | HP 15/22 | AC 19 (t12/ff19) | Fort +5, Ref +2, Will +3 | sense motive +0, perception +7 (low-light vision); +2 initiative
im confused... are you saying that my options are to take the armor or get less gold than everyone else? I would like the breastplate to have been part of the sold loot and I would like an even share. Is that not an option?
Half-Elf Bloodrager | HP 15/22 | AC 19 (t12/ff19) | Fort +5, Ref +2, Will +3 | sense motive +0, perception +7 (low-light vision); +2 initiative
Taryn shifts uncomfortably as the others return. I hate being outnumbered like this, he thinks with some concern, I don't know how close they are, or how their alliances would fall if something went wrong, but I know several of them share a house that isn't Lyrandar and that my only connection to my own house has vanished... it seems it may be a small miracle if I escape this city alive. At least this Carduus seems a reliable and competent healer...

I was the other one who said I'd take a breastplate, yeah... I had kind of talked myself into taking it for the DR but, on further reflection, I'd really rather have it sold and take the 10k gold. The DR is definitely tempting but I see Taryn being more mobile (and able to actually use his acrobatics skill), so I'd rather buy a mithril breastplate. |
