My House Rules for Hero Points:

Hero Point Mechanics:

1) One permanent Hero Point may be used to avoid a final death scenario allowing a narrow cinematic escape,

2) One temporary Hero Point may be used if you are between -1 and -9 hit points to stabilize yourself to prevent further blood loss,

3) Temporary Hero Points may be expended to power Feats. These grant a lasting bonus for a one scene or one round duration depending on the feat description,

4) One temporary Hero Point grants a character a chance to supplement their d20 roll by 1d6 and add the result (whatever it was - no re-roll) to the d20 result,

Progression system:
Level 1-10 1d6,
Level 11-20 2d6,
Level 21-?? 3d6. and

5) No more than one Hero Point may be expended per round.

Taryn slides forward and make short work of the leader.

Dev and Jirrik bring down the fleeing Kobold and the room is silent save for your own panting.

Combat Over!

The Kobolds have very little save the leader who does wear a shiny necklace. This room is little more than rubble and darkness. You assume that the kobold fled south as the door leading out is that way.

Beylinds turns to the group, "Perhaps we should head back out and inform the Watch of this? There is something going on here that may be bigger than just a few missing people".

HE glances around to make sure that his companions are alright, then raises an eyebrow and says 'Shall we?", gesturing down the hall.

"We'll sort out the split once we're out of this hole," he grumbles to anyone who seems perturbed by his action.

"Hrm. You know, you folks might not believe this, but I'm usually all for danger, intrigue, spelunking and kidnapper kobolds, but Beylinda might have a point. I'm starting to think at least the missing-person they I'm after, if he's down here, hasn't been alive for a good bit-- not with all the goblins and whatnot.

Maybe backtracking is the right call.

"I was thinking time might be an issue, given the racket we've made, Elf-hammer. Didn't seem to do the one who was wearing it much good." The medic looks to Beylinda with a scowl. "The Watch ain't in a real big hurry to look down here - that's why the sergeant hired us to do it. But technically we ain't signed any contract, so you're welcome to do as you please, Bey." He then addresses the rest of the party.

"Me and the 'Hammer got people gone missin' down here, so we're not goin' back 'til we know what's happened to 'em. You part-timers can come with us or not."

Aww, Rags, you big softie: Never Leaveing a man behind. Well I won't let you die on account of my leaving, no Sir. Still, I think the Watch might like a little heads up, even if it's only enough that they come to pull our handsome corpses back up out of the Cogs. Maybe Beylinda and a bodyguard then? And the rest of us can keep on keeping on?

”Well, I guess it’s not like we have volunteers lining up to check it out anyways,” Taryn answers the medic with a hint of a frown.

Addressing the rest of the party, he declares, ”Carduus is right, there’s a chance my brother could be down here and there’s no way I’m turning back before I find out. It wouldn’t hurt for someone to know where we are, though, in case we don’t make it out... Kaine, Beylinda, go ahead and head back out. Let the watch know what we found here. The rest of you, pick quickly: leave with them or keep moving with us.”

Kaine and Bey head back the way the group originally came leaving those dedicated to seeking missing loved ones present in this place.

At this point the only ways to go appear to be south or back with Kaine and Bey, there was a room that your group did leave behind that was headed north when you found this secret tunnel. If you head back the way Kaine and Bey went there were other possibilities as well as seen on the map. Let me know which way you all want to go and it what order.

Kaine and Bey head back the way you initially came while the rest of the group heads south through the silent ruins, the bodies of the kobolds behind having bled out and begun to turn cold.

The Grimlocks which escaped are still nowhere to be seen as Taryn leads the group to another larger room 60' wide by 30' long. This room is as pitch black as the rest of the dungeon, a quick search reveals that the kobolds spent most of their time in this area as their belongings, meagre as they may be are all here.

The passage south narrows to 20' wide and moves along longer than the light of your light sources can reveal. To the east is a door, no sentry guards it, perhaps that was the purpose of the Kobolds you already defeated? It is a constructed door and new to the area, clearly it was not part of the original design.

Survival DC 15:
Tracks lead down this hall in the dust and grime, they continue into the area of darkness and lead past the door.

Perception DC 22:
You hear the echo of feet shuffling from the south.

Taryn takes note when Jirri mentions approaching footsteps. He looks for a place to stand off to one side of the southern tunnel (where he won’t be seen until whoever it is enters the chamber), but near enough to the tunnel that he can charge the mysterious figure if necessary...

Carduus stands next to Viorr, nodding at his assessment of the tracks on the floor before glancing sharply to the south at Jirri's grumbles.

"Either we hurry up with that door or we cover up the light - or we stand here clear as day fer whatever's comin'."

I placed everyone who hadn't moved on the map as best as I could figure. GM DB, I'm assuming about a minute has passed since the kobolds - if this isn't right, let me know :) Also I figure Carduus will just refresh his light spell on Viorr's weapon whenever it expires.

Carduus, closer to 5 minutes with the slow pace through the rubble and the debate about who would go where. OK on the light spell though! Map looks right, note Taryn that you are in the rubble so movement back through will be hampered and you will be at half speed until you make your way back to the tiles.

Jirri and Dev locate the device that indeed does trap the door. As the dwarf works the mechanism, his hearing picks up the shuffling and Dev';s attention wavers as well.

The group readies itself to deal with whatever may make its way through to darkness to threaten your position. After 3 minutes nothing ever does and the sound is gone.

Knowledge Dungeoneering DC 17:
There's a damn good chance that shuffling was the sound of Kaine and Bey sneaking back out, if you are right, that tunnel may lead back into the grate entrance through which the group first entered. If you are wrong, than this dig site is bigger than you thought it was.

As Jiri turns the know, a blade springs from the left of the door swinging in an arc at those unfortunate enough to be near it!

Dev bends away from the swinging blade and it neatly deflects off of Electric Eyes plating but Jiri takes a hit. Jiri 3 damage.

The door continues its inward sing revealing a few more kobolds within. Two with bows at the ready behind crates, they yip at you like dogs. A statue in the far corner depicts a tentacle-faced humanoid devouring a goblin’s brain. Next to the statue behind a shimmering wall of energy is yet another kobold who hisses,

While the other Kobolds loose their shortbows at Dev and Jiri, despite their advantage of surprise one arrow missies Jiri. Dev is struck as he is caught flat-footed and catches an arow in the mid-section. 6 damage.

On their home turf, the Kobolds prove the faster as they once more assault the members of the party by the door.

Round 1 Attacks:

The second assault once again finds Electric Eye and Dev on the receiving end of strikes of the exact same nature - force missiles and arrow. Jiri's foes once more misses his shot this time the string on his bow breaks, much to his surprise.

PCs UP! - The door is not considered blocked so those in back can rush in if they so choose.

Let's make it a little more dangerous for that one to cast... Viorr thinks as he rushes into the room. As he goes, he drops the light-bearing mace in the doorway.

Double move. He can't charge or attack, but hopefully he can back the caster up enough to provoke...

Dev takes a knee as he's peppered with arrows, grunting in pain even as he realizes the fabric is his armor likely stopped a good portion of the pain.

Standing back up, he focuses on the source of those arrows, unleashing an energy ray of lightning.

Round 1

Carduus crowds the door, attempting to shield Dev and the Eye from further attacks. He sees Viorr has charged up to the spellcaster and grunts in approval.

"Elfhammer! We've got three kobolds that need dealing with," he calls back to Taryn. He keeps his torch and tindertwig ready in case their enemies get any clever ideas about Viorr's glowing mace on the floor.

I believe allies can still move freely through my space. Holding off on healing in the hopes that I can clean everybody up with a channel or two after the fight.

Standard: readying action to light torch if the light on Viorr's mace is negated; Move: to door per map; Swift: none; Free: talking.

As Viorr, Carduus, and Jiri get themselves into position to bring the fight to the Kobold, Dev's initial sally is cut short by the presence of the crate in front of the Kobold.

Taryn charges through the doorway at the Kobold to the north of the room. Double move into melee range of the Kobold.

Electric Eye retrieves and drinks a Repair Potion 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

Kobolds.
The Party.

The Sorcerer backs into the wall with no other place to go and casts a spell at Viorr.

Meanwhile, the Kobold facing drops his bow and draws a nasty looking spear thrusting it at Taryn.

The last Kobold shoots at Carduus.

I'll give the rest of the PCs another day to post then I will BOT them. Just an FYI, none of the Kobolds will be down yet based on PC actions thus far, these are tougher customers than the ones previously encountered.

The Kobold before Viorr begins to shake in terror!

Jiri fire off a shot at the foe combating Taryn as a bomb here would hurt more than it would help.

Crossbow Attack 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 - 4 = 10

However his shot goes too high as he has to thread the needle among more allies than adversaries.

Viorr (though his second swing misses) and Taryn both score solid hits but these Kobolds are made of sterner stuff than their previous foes and hold their ground. Electric Eye's wide arc strikes rubble but no Kobold scales.

Round 3 Attacks:
S3 - Claws 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10 - Damage 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0
