Really? Where?

Shapeless Companion requires a caster level of 7 to be taken. It’s a stretch, but Eldritch Guardians count their class levels as Wizard levels. Does this mean they can qualify for the feat?

Have you considered the Puppetmaster Magus? They gain not only all of the bard’s spells (including several illusion and enchantment spells), but also have the ability to maintain even more illusions at once, especially if you pick a School Familiar with the Illusion school.

You’d also have access to the Spell Trickery arcana. This allows you to get your spells out faster if you succeed at a dirty trick maneuver, which with True Strike, the Dirty Trickster gnome racial feature, and the Prankster trait, should be easy to do.

Going Illusion Wizard/Puppetmaster of Matahallah would let you set up and control a huge amount of illusions in no time.

... Well, that was a hell of a tomorrow. Anyways, I might as well get this breakdown posted.

The sahkils are a neutral evil race of outsiders native to the ethereal plane. Former psychopomps that decided to rebel against their purpose of shepherding souls along the afterlife, they are a scourge the planes through sowing fear in myriad forms. As traitors of the great beyond, they have consequently earned the enmity of not only the psychopomps and other common celestials, but also the manasaptras, a lawful good race of outsiders that are unfortunately immune to calling magic.

For a general breakdown of all sahkils:

  • Tactically speaking, sahkils can be considered mezzers in ability thanks to their Spell Like Abilities (SLAs henceforth) focusing on mind-affecting effects.
  • Each one has a unique gaze attack called the "Look of Fear" (LoH henceforth) that varies between each sahkil, ranging from pitiful to basolutely debilitating. Furthermore, their "Emotional Focus" ability adds to the DCs of all emotion and fear effects they cast, including their LoH.
  • They all have Ethereal Jaunt and can activate it as a move action, which is a nice mobility boost.
  • Offensive wise, they have free Ghost Touch on all of their attacks.
  • Defensively speaking, they're similar to daemons (just replace acid immunity with immunity to fear effects), some spell resistance and resistance to cold, electricity, and sonic.
  • ... and Telepathy is always nice.
  • But the most important point of sahkils for this sheet? The reason I'm writing this up at all? Is THIS:

Easy to Call (Ex) wrote:
Sahkils count as having 4 fewer Hit Dice (minimum 2) for purposes of spells or effects that call outsiders, such as planar binding. However, they receive a racial bonus equal to 1/2 their Hit Dice on Charisma checks to break free of planar binding spells and similar effects, and their spell resistance counts as if it were 5 higher for the purpose of breaking free of planar binding spells and similar effects.

With this being built in mind directly for binders, it's surprising that there aren't as many discussions about this ability in binder builds. In return for making them able to call up sooner, it also makes calling Sahkils a risky maneuver. On one hand, you get more power earlier, but on the other hand, they can wreak havoc against you and your party, especially if they're more powerful than you. Soooooo let's discuss this!

NOTE: Stats listed in parenthesis are in regards to binding attempts due to Easy to Call. For example, an Nucol's regular CHA is 16 but it's Easy to Call adds 1/2 it's HD (5/2=2 rounded down), turning it's CHA into 18 in regards to binder.

Lesser Planar Binding:

Esipil/CR 2
3 (2) HD, +4 Will, No SR (5), CHA 12 (13)

The weakest of the sahkils, but also the easiest to manage. Can be accessed as familiars via Improved Familiar, but even then there's better options, especially since Contact Other Plane is WAY WORSE than Commune. Still, if you need a recon monster, it's passable. It has some surprising abilities, though, namely the ability to grab creatures one size larger than it is and confusing criticals with no save. Their LoF is garbage, though. You can do better.

Nucol/CR 4
5 (2) HD, +2 Will, 15 SR (20), CHA 16 (18)

This is more of a muscle option thanks to its gore and 40 ft. speed. We're starting to see DR, too. It also has a disease ability, but the DC is rather easy to beat. LoF is still garbage, but Grease 3/day can be fun. Remove Disease can be pretty flavorful as a bargaining tool.

Wihsaak/CR 6
8 (4) HD, +7 Will, 17 SR (22), CHA 14 (18)

4 attacks and 80 ft. flight give it some options. Spamming Vomit Swarm can be good crowd control, especially with its immunity to swarms. Its other SLAs are okay for its level, with See Invisibility and Unholy Blight 1/day. Getting a buff to DR is also good. Being able to confuse everything within 100 ft. would be nicer if the Will save was harder to beat. Lof can have a decent duration now, maybe.

Ichkoh/CR 7
9 (5) HD, +11 Will, 18 SR (23), CHA 21 (25)

Now we're getting somewhere. Constant See Invisibility, At-Will Dimension Door and Invisibility, and some solid buffs and nasty debuffs make up this beast's SLAs. Fall Apart is a nasty Will-save debuff, even with a cooldown. Their LoH is the same as the Wihsaak's, unfortunately, but with a better DC.

Lesser Planar Binding + Augment Calling:

Pakalchi/CR 9
11 (7) HD, +10 Will, 20 SR (25), CHA 21 (26)

Possibly the most goth outsider in all of PF, and an incredibly solid creature to call with PB. 6 melee attacks, 4 ranged, and a pseudo-lunge on any one melee attack (including AoOs; remember it has Combat Reflexes!) are a great start. The ability to entangle adjacent creatures without any action on their part and a poison that can disrupt team players make them great at field control. Their SLAs make them look even better, with the ability to fly, charm, and dominate people are amazing. Constant True Seeing is great as well. It's like this thing is the sahkil's answer to succubi. Oh, and their LoH finally make people panicked!

Zohanil/CR 10
12 (8) HD, +14 Will, 21 SR (25), CHA 19 (25)

These guys are a tanky option with 130+ HP. Greater Invisibility and Overwhelming Grief can help set up sneak attacks rather well. See Invisibility is nice too, but the rest of the SLAs are meh. Addiction isn't going to help much in battles and their LoH is weaker than the Pakalchi's. Zohanil's a bit of a niche, but if you wanna make your rogue happy, bring this guy.

Planar Binding + Augment Calling:

Thanks to Easy to Call, these two are hands down the nastiest creatures you can call with PB. But it's that same ability that makes them so dangerous to you, too. Call with caution.

Qolok/CR 16
18 (14) HD, +17 Will; +8 against mind-affecting effects, 27 SR (32), CHA 21 (30)

Now keeping these things in line are starting to get hard. But damn what you get in return for calling this big boy; 6 attacks (one with extra reach and grab), swallow whole plus a phobia from being eaten alive and fast healing establishes it as good muscle. Their LoH helps it with this role, too, with it gaining temp HP for every enemy it frightens. It doesn't choke on the SLA department either: with 18 CL, its Disintegrate can wreck the hell out of people, Greater Dispel Magic is a versatile counter to a lot of magic, and Mind Blank, Magic Circle Against Good, and Air Walk are solid buffs. Nasty thing to fight, but just as nasty to control.

Ximtal/CR 17
18 (14) HD, +17 Will, 28 SR (33), CHA 23 (32)

A flying grappler is always good as a martial, especially when its large, under a constant Greater Magical Fang and carries an infectious debilitating disease. Its SLAS are save-or-suck by nature, especially regarding Cloudkill, Imprisonment, and Maze. Feast on Fear is a good way to get temp HP (which it needs due to the lack of fast healing) and deal with chaff simultaneously. Miasma can be an excellent defense option and crowd control, and Isolation WILL ruin any team player. It's LoH is lacking only compared to the Qolok, because frightened is just that good of a condition.

Greater Planar Binding + Augment Calling + Spell Perfection/Caller's Feather:

Kimenhul/CR 20
25 (21) HD, +23 Will; +8 against mind-affecting effects , 31 SR (36), CHA 26 (38, WHAT)

All sahkils are nightmare fuel incarnate, but the Kimenhul is the most horrible of them all. It's so evil, it can explicitly inflict PTSD on everything within 300 ft. at will. Its LoH can paralyze, and even those immune to paralysis via special abilities or spells are not safe. 7 ATTACKS WITH GRAB AND CHARISMA BLEED. And if you're grabbed, this hulking abomination can drag you screaming to the Ethereal Plane as a swift action with no save. Unsettled Mind can just wreck anybody, with spellcasters being especially screwed. And its SLAs are a literal nightmare to deal with thanks to access to Blasphemy, Eyebite, and Weird. It doesn't get spells though, and to be honest, I'm glad: when this thing gets out, and I DO mean when, do you really want it to have a full spell list against you?

It's a short list for the sahkils, but thanks to Book of the Damned, they also have their own demigods, the Sahkil Tormentors. These tormentors are strong enough sahkils that they even offer boons via the Fiendish Obedience feat. I'll cover those tomorrow. And I DO mean tomorrow!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Following (by a long distance of time) in the veins of Douglas Muir 406's binding guide, I realized there were some outsiders that weren't covered. And oh baby, they're pretty damn good. They are also explicitly stuff that you can call via Greater Planar Binding. That, and potentially other stuff.

Just Greater Planar Binding (GPB):

Mustelidal Agathion/NG/CR 16
18 HD, +13 Will, No SR, CHA 15

It's basically an earthy monk minus the flurry of blows. They have a burrow speed and some stone-based SLAs, so there is some utility there. Their lay on hands heals for a large amount of damage, but their other abilities aren't worth writing home about.

GPB + Augment Calling or Caller's Feather:

Bastion Archon/LG/CR 20
20 HD, +19 Will, 31 SR, CHA 20

The biggest and the baddest of the Archons, and ooh boy, is this a good one. On top of an Archon's usual aura of menace, Bastions also have an aura of mending that grants fast healing to all allies and itself in range. Furthermore, like the Solar Angel, it can cast spells like a cleric. Their caster levels aren't topped out like them however, but having access to 9th level spells cannot be underestimated.
Even more so they have a large amount of SLAS, namely blaster stuff like Meteor Swarm and Polar Ray, but also crowd control like Prismatic Spray. Finally, it has nice abilities, such as shooting frickin' holy beams that can't be reduced via energy resistance and can blind. Slam attacks that can also blind when two connect. And if it dies (big if), it heals all its allies and consecrate its death area a la hallow. All in all, not a bad creature to call. I suggest popping 2K GP over spending a feat, though.

GPB + Augment Calling + Spell Perfection or Caller's Feather:

Cervinal Agathion/NG/CR 17
21 HD, +19 Will, 28 SR, 19 CHA

A decent archer, but also a good sentry; most of his SLAs are vision based and negating entry to areas with options such as Invisibility Purge, Dismissal, and Greater Scrying. Has some nice healing, too. Not worth the feats by itself, though.

GPB +Augment Calling + Spell Perfection + Caller's Feather:

Lipika Aeon/N/CR 18
24 HD, +23 Will, 29 SR, 23 CHA

"I'm rubber, you're glue" the outsider. 4 attacks for melee and ranged make this one versatile in combat, and its defensive abilities makes everyone attacking it regret it. Not bad in the skills department either, making it a decent face and librarian. Not a whole lot in the SLA department though, but its special abilities more than make up for it.

Pleroma Aeon/N/CR 20
24 HD, +26 Will, 31 SR, 25 CHA

Only has one regular attack, but it will wreck you no matter what you are with no save. Can cast spells like a cleric, but can also prepare "certain wizard/sorcerer spells". Their SLAs can make and/or break whatever the hell they want. They can not only create friggin' spheres of annihilation and wield them as their own personal power tools, but can make the exact opposite and shape their surroundings to their whim?
So why am I telling you to avoid calling these things?
The last paragraph of their bestiary entry tells you why exactly:

Bestiary 2 wrote:
... Should any be so foolish as to attempt to interfere with or sway their work, pleromas immediately retaliate by bringing all of their significant powers and devastating abilities to bear until the intervention is destroyed.

Note the immediate part. They. Will. Not. Work. For. You. Calling this damn thing is akin to the scene of Joe Dirt threatening to nuke himself, except with an actual nuke. You may not have the crappy hair, but you sure look stupid.

Draconal Agathion/NG/CR 20
24 HD, +17 Will, 31 SR, 23 CHA

The mack daddies (and mommies) of the Agathions has a lot of tools at their disposal. Most notably is that they have spellcasting as per Bastion Archons: not as strong as Solars, but unlike Bastions, they have access to domains, which can expand their spell selection slightly. Their SLAs are also really nice, ranging from healing to shapeshifting (Beast Shape II and Elemental Body III) to area control (Control x spells).
Their attacks are alright enough, with a breath attack to boot. A solid creature all around, although if you really want to cherry pick what kind of spells it might have or what element its attack uses, be aware of the colors.
Oh, and their lay on hands heal 10d6.

Veranallia Azata/CG/CR 20
24 HD, +26 Will, 31 SR, 29 CHA

Ho. Ly. HELL. Is this lady hard to bind? I'd say so; just look at that Will and Charisma! But if by some weird chance you can get her to stick? The Veranallia is THE OUTSIDER you want to bind. 7 attacks, 3 with reach and grab. Good SLAs, such as Quickened Wall of Thorns and Regenerate. The ability to reincarnate people as aasimar.
But the real reason you want to bind this lady? Full. Casting. Not just from the Cleric list, but also from the Druid list. And at 20th CL, to boot! And if that's not all, she can ignore the cost of any spell once per day? Need a True Resurrection and short on the cash? No problem!
While there are Veranallia Elders, which are more advanced versions with more abilities, they likely have more HD and are thus unfortunately out of the HD range. Just be careful about their personalities; they're as fickle as the seasons and even other Azatas have problems with them. Nevertheless, if you can get her on your side and deal with her behavioral issues, you're practically solid.

There was also something that caught my eye in regards to the Shaman class. Specifically, the Dark Tapestry hex, Alien Summons.

Alien Summons wrote:
Whenever the shaman calls or summons one or more creatures, one creature of her choice arrives with the advanced creature simple template. The creature presents a distorted mockery of the usual creature summoned, its body deformed and alien in nature. This chosen creature’s anatomy is so confounding that it is immune to the additional damage from critical hits or precision damage (such as that granted by sneak attack).

Advanced creatures with immunity to crits? On everything I call and summon? WITH NO LIMIT WHATSOEVER?! HOLY HELL!

Not quite. They're divine/nature casters and are relegated to the inferior Summon Nature's Ally and Planar Ally spells. However, due to the nature of the spirit you get them from, you can also potentially apply for the Dreamed Secrets feat, which lets them prepare 2 wizard spells per day. Combine that with the Lore spirit Arcane Enlightenment hex which can add more wizard spells, and you can get around that problem with ease. Enjoy your super-abomination Veranallia!

Oh, and for those wanting to help out with the binder but isn't actually a binder or for gestalt purposes, look up the Mockery performance from the Court Bard archetype. A scaling penalty to Charisma checks can be a big defense in this game.

I'll make a write up on binding Sahkils, an oft-forgotten species of outsiders, tomorrow. Because surprisingly, they have some unique tricks towards people seeking to bind them.

Varisian culture. It’s basically a bunch of romani stereotypes; fortune telling, criminal activity (thanks Sczarni!), hell, even their aesthetic reeks of offensive imitation.

Since Golarion utilized the thassilion setting and it’s motif of sin runes, I figured I could create a core pantheon revolving around that. I also made a point to select gods that represent the virtues in opposition to the sins, as well as the minor sins, acedia and vainglory. However, since many of the virtues didn’t use the exact word in their area of concern, I head-canoned them “synonym” gods; their abilities would be weaker in comparison to the deities that had an exact virtue or sin.

LG
Apsu - God of Good Dragons, Leadership, and Peace. Starting off the list one of the setting’s Big Goods, Apsu. There were two other good deities in the running for peace, but they were a dwarven deity and an empyreal lord respectively, so I figured a draconic god would have it’s own niche. Unfortunately, he’a also a synonym god, which, while an ancient and mighty god, would dampen his powers a bit.
Lymnieris - Empyreal Lord of Prostitution, Rites of Passage, and Virginity. The first empyreal lord on the list, and a synonym god. He’d work with the archons and be a direct opponent to Verex. Since one of his areas of concern is so closely tied to the virtue of purity or chastity, I figured I could conflate that with Love.

NG
Dalendrya - Empyreal Lord of Battlefield Healing, Caregiving, and Sanctuaries. The second empyreal lord on the list was the closest god I could find that dealt explicitly with kindness, using a synonym - caring - for it to qualify. Since Dalendrya is an angel, she’s their representative. Possibly the weakest of the synonym gods due to her bottlenecked nature.
Khepri - Osiriani God of Freedom, The Rising Sun, and Work. The representative of diligence, Khepri is the god I chose to represent the agathions. Also, it’s not every day you see a good bug deity, even if he is a synonym god.
Kurgess - God of Bravery, Competition, and Sport. The representative of humility was a different decision because I decided to use the gloss definition for the virtue instead of a synonym. Regardless, I think it fits him because of how he encourages losing with grace. It was almost Trudd, but I decided to give the dwarven god role to Magrim. He’s also a synonym god.
Myr - Azlanti Goddess of Charity, Lineage, and Physical Perfection. One of the few deities that had an actual virtue in their area of concern, making her one of two good non-synonym gods. I think Myr would get along well with Kurgess due to his heritage by two core deities.

CG
Milani - God of Devotion, Hope, and Uprising. Not one of the core virtues, but I inducted her into my 20 because of her domain of hope. Since I also chose deities that utilized themes similar to the sin of acedia, I realized Milani would be a good counter. She’s the other of the two non-synonym gods.
Valani - Empyreal Lord of Change, Growth and Primal Forces. The last empyreal lord and representative pf the azatas, Valani was chosen as a representative of temperance as well as zeal (dude’s a volcano god, remember?). Considering the synonyms of change and growth, I would surmise that he would have a stronger ability to control his virtue than the other “synonym” gods, albeit marginally.

LN
Magrim - Dwarven god of Death, Fate, and the Underworld. The only god on this list that doesn’t have a vice/virtue motif, he was selected to give the dwarves someone to worship. He was also selected as a replacement death god for Pharasma, and as a mediator between the forces of good and evil. Originally, I was going to pick Mazludeh for that job, but then I’d have no LN deities! Due to his lack of virtues or sins, he’d be the weakest deity in the pantheon.

N
Naderi - Goddess of Drowning, Romantic Tragedy, and Suicide. The main representative of the sin of acedia. As the only true neutral deity on this list, she would also serve as a mediator, albeit one that could be easily swayed by all sides. Chamiaholom would seek to usurp her throne, along with possibly Sifkesh. Although a synonym god in her own right, her usefulness to everyone makes sure they keep her around.

CN
Tjasse - Giant God of Giant Birds, Mountain Peaks, and Pride. The last neutral deity is also the only non-evil god of a cardinal sin. This proud god would also serve as a representative of the giants, and would serve a a good overland foil against the short underworld dweller, Magrim.

LE
Eiseth - Night Queen of Battle, Revenge, and Wrath. The representative of Wrath, she considers her position in the 20 a tactical advantage and a strong point of contention against the qlippoth hordes. So much, in fact, that Rovagug’s allies would band together against her specifically.
Rahu - Asura Rana of Eclipses, Executions, and Gluttony. Gluttony’s god and representative of the Asuras. His ascension would give him a lot of clout against the traitor asura, Geryon, and would provide the sun god Khepri a good rival.

NE
Chamiaholom - Sahkil Tormentor of Domination, Hopelessness, and Mortality. I always found the sahkils to be under-represented; they don’t even have a variant tiefling to call their own. So out of pity, I decided to give Chamiaholom a role as a usurper of the undead, replacing Urgathoa, and an upstart representative of the sin of acedia. It could have been Sifkesh, but demons already have a representative in Jubilex and to be honest, she kind of squicks me out. Ozranvial was also a close contender as the representative due to him having despair as an area of concern. Regardless of who I selected, I’m still not sure whether I should relegate them as a synonym god or not. Let’s honest, how often do you hear “acedia” in modern conversation.
Fumeiyoshi - Tian Xia God of Dishonor, Envy, Graves, and Undead. The god of envy almost pulled double duty as the god of the Onis and the undead. It wasn’t until I decided to add the sin of acedia and give it to Chamiaholom when that changed.
Zaigasnar - Daemonic Harbinger of Body Modification, Destructive Vanity, and Pins. As the representative of the sin of vainglory, I would consider Zaigasnar the most powerful of the “synonym” gods on terms of his relative vice. His rank as a harbinger would also acquaint him with Laivatiniel and Slandrais, both harbingers with an emphasis on perverting love, allowing him to set them up against Lymnieris without the empyreal lord’s knowledge.

CE
Chaugnar Faugn - Great Old One of Blood, Patience, and Old Hill Countries. An interesting choice, as he is the only evil deity with a virtue instead of a vice. As a great old one, he would also possess abilities that could rival Apsu in general power, and with his virtue being more in focus than the dragon god’s he just might be the most powerful deity in the 20x
Jubilex - Demon Lord of Ooze, Poison, and Sloth. The demon representative, and, strangely, the only god that explicitly deals with sloth. I figured there might’ve been more deities that dealt with this one, like with Shax also having envy and Orcus dealing with wrath, but apparently not!
Thamir Gixx - Halfling God of Greed, Opportunity, and Thievery. It’d be fitting for Gixx to be on this list since he not only deals with a cardinal sin, but also served under a core deity that explicitly dealt with the same sin! This could give Gixx a significant edge on his other opponents. Him representing halflings was also a bonus.
Verex - Orc God of Lust, Pillage, and Plunder. While it would have been easy to associate Verex with the phrase “rape, pillage, and burn”, I decided to include him with a different interpretation in mind: he and his followers lust for power and blood, utilizing a strong sense of tactical acumen and economic prowess that is well hidden under their identity as a warband. As such, they are the least predictable deity in my 20.

After re-reading Book of the Damned, I realized that making daemons likely to sexually assault mortal summoners wasn’t just bad taste, it was bad writing. Daemons hate all mortal life, so why would they risk procreation and delay their own goals. At best, it’d be hypocrisy. At worst, it’d be blasphemy. So I’ve written an alternate truth that’s even worse than rape minus any rape! :D

Apollyon’s Got The Rumor Bug:
Apollyon, the horseman of pestilence, does not only deal with mortal diseases. He also manages societal ills, and has a strong information racket for the sole purpose of dividing and ruining cultures that prove resistant to his plagues, such as the echleons of devilish nobility or the celestial courts.

Apollyon’s own rumor does not exclude his own species, however; he enjoys creating rumors that help foster the fearsome reputation of daemonkind, for if a mortal hears of the dreaded daemons and kills themselves to spare themselves the horrors, it’d save them all the trouble! One rumor in particular is especially heinous; the idea that daemons are all rapists.

In truth, daemons have no desire to commit the deed and, outside of erodaemons, have no appropriate appendages to do so anyways. After all, the possibility of procreation is an abhorrent concept for any daemon. Apollyon spreads this rumor regardless, giving daemonkind a more monstrous reputation. In fact, of all of Apollyons lies, this is the one he works hardest to spread, to the point that practically everything in existence except daemons believe it. Even the Book of the Damned falls for it. But in truth, this lie is part of a more sinister conspiracy.

By providing the illusion of daemonic assault, Apollyon can spread a special disease of his: Foetal Exterminans. While the disease doesn’t cause any visible harm that other diseases such as mummy rot can do, its true function is particularly vile; any pregnant individual either has a stillborn or, failing that, corrupts the infant into a daemon-spawn tiefling. The mother perishes shortly afterwards. Another terrifying aspect of the disease is its fecundity; anything as simple as a touch or a puff of air can spread foetal exterminans, and anyone can be a carrier. Nigh impossible to detect, and even harder to remove, Apollyon added an additional redundancy to protect his most valued disease: sentiency. Capable of seeking out vulnerable targets, the disease is capable of spreading itself in large populations quickly while evading any chance of detection.

The scant few grimspawn that know the truth of the cause of their existence either openly curse Apollyon or quietly give thanks to “Papa Polly”. Either way, the plaguemaster cares little of their beliefs. He comes for all, progeny or otherwise.

I know that bards also have access to healing magic, but since they aren’t as specialized with it as classes like Cleric, I think heal could work wonders with this class. Specifically, the Solacer archetype allows you to take 20 without increasing the time taken a numver of times per day. It also helps deal with sanity damage, increasing the heal skill’s versatility. It also treats it as a class skill!

So if his biggest problem would be the worldwound north of him, would it be too far-fetched to think that Orcus, Kabriri, and any other undead-based nascent demon lord would be his most dangerous opposition?

To that end, maybe he would side with and of the infernal dukes that work with LE undead, since he’s close to Cheliax... and maybe likeminded kyton demagogues in Nidal. The horsemen would definitely be interested in him, since the whispering way wants to replace all life with undead creatures, right?

I just realized that the sins of envy and lust prohibit necromancy spells, and that gluttony specializes in that field of magic. So Calistria and Zon-Kuthon, having lust and envy as their respective fields of concern, could be Tarry’s biggest deific opposition. Makes sense, too, since Urgathoa deals with gluttony.

I know the usual number of the horseman is four for war, death, pestilence and famine, but have you ever thought about making a fifth horseman based on conquest? How would you go about that?

Also, there’s the line from Rev 6:8: “And Hades followed behind/with him,” him being death. Could that line fit in the setting somehow?

Also-also, is there anything else from the boon of revelations that inspired daemonkind that we haven’t made note of yet?

The antipaladin’s fearmonger archetype is embarrassingly written. It’s supposed to give the antipaladin a unique cruelty whenever they use touch of corruption... but the previous ability, feed on fear, replace touch of corruption, preventing you from using cruelties in the first place. What makes it worse is that feed on fear would have had amazing synergy with the new cruelties had it actually worked!

Has anyone suggested the Mari Lwyd yet? Because a giant ghostly horse head with ranks in perform (sing) and stealing all your food sounds hilarious.

I added Folca to Pathfinder’s YMMV page under “Base-Breaking Character” for many of the reasons stated in this thread. Considering what Folca represents, I don’t blame anyone for taking umbrage with this character.

Outside of “very carefully”, of course.

I’m not talking about planar binding, either; that’s the easy part. What I’m trying to do is make it stay put without killing anything. The binding spell is out of the question, due to qlippoths being immune to mind-affecting effects.

Do you have any advice for freelance writers, both for those trying to get started and experts in the field?

Ultimate Wilderness released the Exotic Heritage feat, which allows you to take the wildblooded versions of bloodlines through Eldritch Heritage. This means you can now take the sylvan version of the fey bloodline, which grants you an animal companion.

Now I have to wonder how many animal companions you can have on one character. Druids and rangers are obvious, but clerics can also get in on the action through domains such as animal and saurian.

Ultimate Wilderness just came out with a feat called Exotic Heritage; it not only works as a replacement for skill focus as a pre-req for eldritch heritage, but it allows the user to pick wildblooded bloodline abilities!

I typically update my Paladin Guide every year. I haven't updated my Inquisitor Guide with such regularity, but some of the older guides definitely could use some love and attention.

If some people wanted to update guides, I'd be happy to create PDF layouts. We'd just have to collaborate on images and layout styles.

Best wishes!

I was just thinking about the inquisitor guide. Specifically, the Living Grimoire archetype is fairly amazing for a virtuoso inquisitor since it allows you to change your main casting stat to intelligence. It could make you great with skills and spells, greatly expanding your versatility.

Here’s another one, although this theory is purposefully stupid as hell:

Szuriel likes to keep tabs on the far-flung planet of Terra. She claims to be watching it due to its rapidly developing collection of weapons, such as nuclear devices and machine guns. However, this doesn’t explain why she seems so focused on a corporation that doesn’t create weapons of war in any capacity. This company recently added a new CEO, one Susan ‘Susie’ Rael, and a new product. Known for its dark red coloring and sweet taste, the drink becomes a popular consumption across the continent. “Susie” names it after a military term to evoke a sense of power: “Code Red”.

The daemon harbingers have been noticing that whenever Szuriel returns from Terra, her characteristic tears of “blood” are absent from her face.

That's a fair point, Reduxist. Do you have a link to this guide?

Sure, it’s right here. it covers a lot of other Prestige classes and the empyreal lords, but stargazer is fairly early in the guide.

Nyarlabrotep, God of The Thousand Forms, all of them swaggy AF.

Also, Broloras, one of the heads of the infernal sorority. Usually does the initiation rituals.

Also also, Swolezuriel, horseman of war and headmaster of Abaddon’s largest sorority. Usually works alongside Urgathota, who owns the largest undead sorority and fraternity branches on BROLARION.

So out of the blue at work today, I immediately think of Asmodeus, but someone starts saying “hey bro...”. Perfect timing happens and the “bro” replaces”-mo-“, resulting in the unholy abomination that is ASBRODEUS, CORE GOD OF FRATERNITIES.

But then I thought about it some more and figured, why stop there with just one bad pun? So I begin storming up more Frat Gods, such as BROSTCHTCHIE, Demon Lord of frosty ones, and TRELMAFLEXIAN, Horseman of “I got you, fam...”ine. There’s also BROVAGUG, who partied too hard for everyone’s own good and is locked in the frat world’s basement.

And that’s where I ran out of pun ideas. Basically you replace part of the god’s name with a fitting masculine pun and turn him into a stereotypical frat boy... but with divine powers. Anyone care to help me out with this awful idea?

How about this one?

Not every gillman was designed by an abolethic being. In truth, none of the gillmen’s current form were ever designed by an aboleth. These forms came before the advent of the aboleths and their coming to Golarion. When they reached the fabled civilization of Azlant, the aboleths were troubled to find that there were already shapeless eldritch beings slithering out of view as the azlantis stood in place. After considering their position and what they could take advantage of here, the aboleths weaved a story claiming that they were the creators of the azlanti people that helped them ascend from their current state. The azlanti people simply agreed to this “truth”.

But why? What kind of formless entities could have beaten the aboleths to the punch? Surrounded by the pressurizing depths where no normal life on Golarion could survive are areas unwelcoming even to the abolethi “masters” of old. Untouched by any mortal civilization before or since, these lurid locales and artifacts of a time long since expired sit waiting for their timeless masters to return and to lay claim to their “gillmen” spawn.

The runes they bear conflict, however- many of these decrepit obelisks sport maddeningly complex runes of an impossible language that spiral around a humanoid eye. Only the foolhardy and the mad would try to decipher these runes, but one word keeps repeating, as if it bears the key to its decryption: “R’lyeh”. But other artifacts still speak in ancient abyssal, with various runic symbols that bear no resemblance to the abyss’s current demonic inhabitants...

depends on what time the gate opens to, and what it lets through... if there are big bombers and atomic weapons going through, sure Golarion is toast, at least until some well place wishes reverse the tables...

But that result depends on where the gate opens in the first place. If it’s the worldwound, where demons come swarming out in droves, or Geb, where there are plenty of undead that can simply regenerate, a russian reversal could be very likely.

But now can you imagine the counter-invasion?

“Golarion? Baba Yaga?! Comrades, we must conquer this world for the Motherland!”

They get through the gate or whatever and...

“атака! атака! атака!!!”

*Fireballs out of nowhere.*

“отступление!!!”

Rinse and repeat for every other nation on earth.

Are you talking about the "strangers with candy" daemon?
Folca, the Gaunt Stranger? Yes. Check pages 112 and 114.

That’s still not getting into his obedience ritual: stalk a kid, physically and/or mentally traumatize him, and tell him you’ll come back for him. That’s pretty damn dark if you ask me!

Nnnnnnnnightripper! Because a name that cool has to get respect from someone!

On a scarcely more serious note, Haagenti, Kabriri, Mazmezz, Shivaska, and Shax all offer some rather potent boons, on top of them having some interesting character traits for campaigns.

  • Haagenti is a mad scientist’s god, granting them discoveries that either create horrific consequences for the inventor and their surroundings, or give powerful boons to horrible people. His boons range from giving you something akin to the philosopher’s stone once per day to becoming a shapechanger with immunity to precision damage.
  • Kabriri, on top of being a patron of ghouls, is an intellectual god of secrets. He also has a rivalry with Nyarlahotep over the leng ghouls and has something resembling a soft spot over elves. His boons allow you to turn into a ghoul or utilize the powerful wish spell once per day.
  • Mazmezz is a goddess of creepy-crawlies and a patron goddess of the drow and driders. Her boons reflect that by granting web abilities and the ability to turn into a big ol’ boog. Coincidentally, her fiendish obedience makes her one of the best gods in the game for grapplers.
  • Shax is a god of blood and murder, and it shows; he’s fond of torture and tormenting anyone unlucky to find themselves in his dominion of Charnel House. His boons all revolve around his proficiency with knives or his mastery over blood; being able to turn bleed effects into healing and granting sneak attack damage.
  • Finally, Shivaska bears a diverse portfolio of aberrations and prisons. She’s worshipped by many types of aberrant creatures, to the point that she is closely related to extinction events related to them. She is also connected to prisons of any kind, whether they be maximum security penitentiaries run by sadistic wardens or orphanages with domineering headmistresses. Her boons are just as versatile as they are powerful, running the gamut of turning your enemy into your personal clockwork slave to turning your arms into inescapable tentacles.

Ardad Lili, Charon, and Doloras looked unfinished to me as well. I wasn’t a fan of Orcus, either.

Also, Asmodeus’s and Dispater’s art were a little underwhelming. Like Dark Midian above me said, Asmo looked less like the undisputed ruler of hell and more like a late night comedy host lampooning him. Dispater, on the other hand, doesn’t look regal at all; his clothes are in tatters and his posture doesn’t give him any sort of elegance. I like how smug his face is, though.

Look into something called a Kikituk; three at will spells with one of them being quickened, and a bonus to ac and saving throws. Not bad for a 12th level caster spell.

What about a sentient rapier with swashbuckler levels? A sword wielding a sword would be a pretty funny mental image.

But yeah, a samsaran barbarian could also benefit from shards of the past to get a few more class skills.

I’d say go for it; I know samsarans are unoptimized for this build, but a bonus to will saves and an extra skill pount doesn’t hurt. As for the backstory, you’d be mad, too, if you kept dying in various humiliating manners and remembered every single g-dd—n second of them. Wouldn’t you get angry?
