As a follow up for the "Who's your favorite empyreal lord" thread(which my disapproval of has nothing to do with my recent affair with Rysky), who's your favorite demo lord?
Mine is nocticula (for obvious reasons). Three tails is just enough tails, yo.

Top favorite is easily Abraxas. Haagenti is also pretty cool.

Nocticula and Sifkesh for obvious reasons.

Flauros and Kro'akoth mostly because they look cool or whatever.

Always Orcus and Demogorgon. For Golarion specific, I do have a fondness for Angazhan.

Graazt... wait is Graazt still a demon lord in Pathfinder?

If not, Orcus. Gotta go with the classics.

Andirifkhu (a religious imperative for crazy death dungeons) and Haagenti (for subtle and creepy and an excuse for all sorts of strangely themed badness).

Is orcus on golarion? I could swear he was 3.5...

Orcus still is, albeit he's been demoted to niche appeal canonicly.

As for me personally, I enjoy Haagenti for the mad and evil science and Cyth'Vsug because infestations (especially under the skin) is one of my personal squicks and that nothing gives you more inspiration to make evil stuff than going from something you yourself find scary/repugnent.

Honorable mention to Baphomet for being the only guy to actually thwart Asmodeus without it being a just as planned moment for the latter.

Hope y'all are excited for the Book of the Damned, then. ^_^

(I'll talk about some of my favorites once it's out and in folks' hands.)

didnt the three books o' the damned come out like a year ago? like, all three of them?

Nope.

Book of the Damned one was first campaign setting book for PFRPG, two was a couple years later, and the third I wanna say was four years ago.

All of which are sold out.

Jezelda is my favorite, followed closely by Urexhel, and the burny lizard dude with the obsidian spear.

I'm sorry but Jezelda's artwork is simply hillarius. She looks like a cross between esmeralda from disney's hunchback and an angey grandma. Love it!

Obviously for nostalgia, Graz'zt, Demogorgon and Orcus.
But Lolth, Juiblex and Pazuzu hold places of fond memories for me as well. There are so many memories of fighting against Graz'zt and Juiblex and Demogorgon and Zuggtmoy and Lolth, etc., etc.

....Nowadays, IF I'm taking personal nostalgia OUT of my equation, and just looking at the various published material, Paizo and old-school combined -- loking at the Fluff material and starting a campaign from scratch around a Demon Lord,.... my favorite is Pazuzu!

Without nostalgia:
1) Pazuzu
2) Lamashtu
3) Abraxas
4) Graz'zt
5) Socothbenoth
6) Zura
7) Demogorgon
8) Sifkesh
9) Shivaska
0) Fraz 'Urb Lu

Hon: Pale Night

Man I loved zuggtmoy. Shame they only converted her fungoid puffball persona.

ORCUS...duh!

none of them.

Grazzt. Hands down.
Next fave is Adimarchus.

Wait, is this PF specific?

In my head canon, Hellboy is the love child of Grazzt and Iggwilv.

Pre-Golarion, Grazzt and Yeenoghu.

For Golarion, I have an automatic fondness for demon lords who have their own races, such as Kabriri (ghouls), Xoveron (gargoyles), Mestama (hags), Angazahn (damn dirty apes), etc.

Haagenti, due to his association with alchemy is a favorite.

Abraxas, magic and forbidden knowledge, also very cool.

Lots of them are cool though, including some non-'traditional' Drow patrons like Flauros, and the most traditional of all Drow patron, Mezzmaz.

If I had to pick just one, and I'll probably change my mind tomorrow, it would be Haagenti.

My personal pick would probably be Jubilex, followed closely by Shax and Abraxas.

Compared to the paragons of awfulness that are the other demon lords, Jubilex strikes me as almost... cute.

(Then again, I may have spent a bit too long down there with them.)

Also, I imagine that his followers would be less knife-crazy and more chilled out than most demon worshipers.

And I, for one, am super hyped for Book of the Damned. Updated Demoniac, Diabolist, and Souleater, yes please.

Yeah, there's an issue with good being held to higher standards than evil, but I exited that thread a while ago. Anyway, on to this one:

One of my friends thinks Socothbenoth would make for a great death metal band, with The Silken Sin as their first album. Another played as a Dagon-worshipping shark shaman druid.

As for me, I'd pick Nurgal. Partially because it'd be easy to pretend to be good, since you're a sun-worshipper of sorts (though drow probably don't like him among demon lords), and partially because of that second obediance boon.

If qlippoth count, I'd prefer Chavazvug. I just like the idea of a staunchly anti-demon wizard who wants them out of the Material Plane and wants to turn their power against them - then at level 7, a cythnigot bursts out of his familiar and his reaction is, "Oh good, it finally hatched!"

The Exchange

Socobenoth.

Evil and more friends then enemys. ^^

Who's socothbenoth and nocticula's mother/ father? Or is it just figurative sibling hood?

Nurgal is awesome because A) he used to be one of the 'gods' of the Azlanti, along with Nura and some actual big G gods, and B) he's like the perfect counterpoint to the Black Butterfly. Can't have a good goddess of the succoring night without a cruel and wicked sun-god to hide from in her sheltering shadows.

James Jacobs commented that there was a very good chance that it was Lamashtu. So she might be, she might not be. Maybe the Book of the Damned HC will tell? :3

As for my favourites,

Nocticula - Demon Lord of Succubi! Yay!

Jubilex - Demon Lord of lube and tentacles, also yay!

Shax - Demon Lord of "'Cause f+!& all y'all".

No really, I could a follower of Nocticula and Shax each wearing that same shirt that read "'Cause f%$* people" for completely different reasons.

once again because jubilex....

He's one of mine too when he's rocking the hyena heads.

Should the fact that soccy(hihi) f'ed lamashtu multiple times surprise me? It probably shouldn't. Any canon children of soccy(hihi) and nocticula? It's been stated multiple times they also chimi-changa'd.

Silver Crusade

*shrugs*

Abraxas, Baphomet and Haagenti, mostly because I have a longstanding interest in things like the occult, secret societies, and the discovery of profane and powerful bits of knowledge. In general, the demon lords who are more subtle about their work and the price you pay for worshiping tend to be much more interesting to me than, say, Orcus or Angazhan.

I also like to show people Kostchtchie's name and challenge them to pronounce it, but I don't think that counts.

Scarab Sages

I'd say Haagenti. Gotta love the Cerebulim.

Shadow Lodge

Seconded on Haagentai, though I just love that the more neutral deities tolerate him because his method of doing evil is inventing weapons of war and letting human(oid) nature handle the rest
Dude invented alchemist's fire

His demonic obedience is not the greatest, but it's not bad

I need to get that shirt for my inquisitor of Nocticula now, but that maybe too much clothing.

On Topic: Noticula, Zura, and Mazzmez are my top 3. Though shoccy does come close.

I also really really really like lamentashu because there's so much stuff about her
Hell, you can pray to her while pregnant and apply the fiendish template to your kid and ensure a safe (for the kid) birth
That's really cool

The whole "Mother of Monsters" angle really does do a lot to help Lamashtu stand out, not just among Demon Lords but also among the evil deities of the setting. Some settings seem to struggle with making different Chaotic Evil outsiders distinct, so it's good that her and Rovagug can't easily be mistaken for each other.

Also, going off his artwork in Book of the Damned he's really cuddly.

Rysky you on drugs? Haagenti doesn't have any sort of artwork in BotD...
The only cuddly one is Cyth-V'sug. And Nocticula. For reasons.

Silver Crusade

I was referring to the new hardcover Book of the Damned :3

It came out???? ERMERGERDDDDDS

Silver Crusade

Yep :3

I wish I could see that artwork of Haagenti. He's my favourite. I'm building a campaign around his cult being one of the main antagonists. Not sure if there are any other Demon Lords that really interest me, though.

Nocticula and Socothbenoth, because hedonism is fun.

Sifkesh, because body horror.

He looks like a cross between a bear and a bull with wings.

Sounds cool.

I would say the one demon lord of apathy, but I can't be bothered.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I cool question. It's so hard since demon lords are both my favorite protagonists as a player and DM, they're all my favorites lol, and why STAP was my favorite AP of the first three.

1. Demogorgon - He was a protagonist in my first ADD campaign from my childhood then again in STAP.

2. Graz'zt - Of all the great Grayhawk legends; the Graz'zt & Iggwilv legend is my favorite. Having Iggwilv actually appear and interact with the PC's in STAP was the highlight of the campaign for me.

3. Lamashtu - Of the new PF demon lords Lamashtu really stands out to me.

There are a lot of things I miss from the Paizo Grayhawk and Dragon Magazine days. Grayhawk and Dragon Magazine were never better! If I could see one series return to print it would be James Jacobs' Demonomicon of Iggwilv.

Liberty's Edge

But uh, you meant Demogorgon was the antagonist . . . Right?

Right?

Nnnnnnnnightripper! Because a name that cool has to get respect from someone!

On a scarcely more serious note, Haagenti, Kabriri, Mazmezz, Shivaska, and Shax all offer some rather potent boons, on top of them having some interesting character traits for campaigns.

  • Haagenti is a mad scientist’s god, granting them discoveries that either create horrific consequences for the inventor and their surroundings, or give powerful boons to horrible people. His boons range from giving you something akin to the philosopher’s stone once per day to becoming a shapechanger with immunity to precision damage.
  • Kabriri, on top of being a patron of ghouls, is an intellectual god of secrets. He also has a rivalry with Nyarlahotep over the leng ghouls and has something resembling a soft spot over elves. His boons allow you to turn into a ghoul or utilize the powerful wish spell once per day.
  • Mazmezz is a goddess of creepy-crawlies and a patron goddess of the drow and driders. Her boons reflect that by granting web abilities and the ability to turn into a big ol’ boog. Coincidentally, her fiendish obedience makes her one of the best gods in the game for grapplers.
  • Shax is a god of blood and murder, and it shows; he’s fond of torture and tormenting anyone unlucky to find themselves in his dominion of Charnel House. His boons all revolve around his proficiency with knives or his mastery over blood; being able to turn bleed effects into healing and granting sneak attack damage.
  • Finally, Shivaska bears a diverse portfolio of aberrations and prisons. She’s worshipped by many types of aberrant creatures, to the point that she is closely related to extinction events related to them. She is also connected to prisons of any kind, whether they be maximum security penitentiaries run by sadistic wardens or orphanages with domineering headmistresses. Her boons are just as versatile as they are powerful, running the gamut of turning your enemy into your personal clockwork slave to turning your arms into inescapable tentacles.

  • Huh, I hadn't read her write-up that closely. A possible connection between Shivaska and Mothmen could make her more interesting by far, to me...
