Subject says it all. Couldn't find any previous discussion on the topic. It seems that the rules as written say yes, so really I'm wondering if I missed something; though I won't be mad if people discuss RAI.

Grapple: On a successful critical hit with a weapon of this type, you can grapple the target of the attack. The wielder can then attempt a combat maneuver check to grapple his opponent as a free action. This grapple attempt does not provoke an attack of opportunity from the creature you are attempting to grapple if that creature is not threatening you. While you grapple the target with a grappling weapon, you can only move or damage the creature on your turn. You are still considered grappled, though you do not have to be adjacent to the creature to continue the grapple. If you move far enough away to be out of the weapon’s reach, you end the grapple with that action.

pretty set on brawler and a divine caster. torn between cleric and warpriest.

build suggestions?

leaning toward cleric (pilgrim archetype) for community domain and because the concept is a wandering holy man that's all about dwarven solidarity who spends most of his time in taverns eating, drinking, socializing, drinking, being merry, drinking, and quelling brawls with his fists. probably not going evangelist because there's already a bard.

thanks in advance!

The invitation delivered last night was remarkably simple, especially given the importance of the occasion: “Start where it all began. Meet us at the Pig’s Paunch one hour before dawn.”

The Pig’s Paunch is a run-down building with a faded sign of a large pig standing on its hind legs, arms folded above a corpulent belly. Inside, the air is thick with the scents of human sweat, stale tobacco, and leftover food. In the center of the room, surrounded by inebriates sleeping off their revelries, a familiar elven man stands high upon top of a large round table.

“Welcome! Welcome, my students! Please, have a seat!” With that, Kreighton Shaine, the Pathfinder Society’s Master of Scrolls, nimbly drops down to sit cross-legged on the table before looking about the tavern with a sense of reverent wonder. “Can you believe it? It all started here years ago—well, over four hundred of them at least. Under this very roof the Pathfinder Society was born.

“But today! Today you will begin your Confirmation! Master Farabellus, Master Zey, and I all agree you each have shown your worth and dedication to the Society, so there’s no better time to see if you can handle becoming full field operatives. Allow me to introduce you to Janira Gavix,” he says as he motions for an excitable halfling woman to approach. She wears a large backpack and carries all manner of tools, pouches, and scroll cases around her waist. Shaine continues, saying, “Janira here will be going with you on your Confirmation. She was one of my brightest pupils and will no doubt be an invaluable resource on your journey, for she discovered the caves you are about to explore during her own Confirmation.”

Janira speaks up in an enthusiastic and cheerful voice, “Greetings, aspiring Pathfinders! Six months ago, while I was mapping cave entrances in the foothills of the Kortos Mounts, I witnessed a lone gillman entering a concealed cave. I thought little of it at the time, but I saw another one enter the cave again a month later as my Confirmation stretched on. A few days later, after I completed my assigned task, I entered the cave system, but was unable to find the gillmen.”

Master Shaine hops to his feet. “Initiates, for your Confirmation, you will travel to these caves to explore and document its many passages. Additionally, and most importantly, you are to learn what the gillmen are up to in there. Oh, and you need to come back alive as well.” With these parting words, the Master of Scrolls jumps off the table and strolls out of the building while humming to himself.

Feel free to introduce yourselves in character and make Knowledge (geography) or Knowledge (history) checks now. We'll actually get started tomorrow or tonight around midnight.

Okay, before we use this for anything else, I need some basic reporting information (for later). So, for now, please only post the following here using your character alias. Once I have everyone's information, we can use the thread for normal discussion.

1.) Player Name/Nickname (for the Chronicle Sheet)
2.) Character Name
3.) PFS and Character Number
4.) Faction
5.) Starting Fame/PP
6.) Day Job Roll (or type "No Day Job")
7.) Any purchases you wish to make. Though for now you can just note that you wish to make purchases and I can get a list from you later.
8.) Anything else you think I should know.

Greetings, Pathfinders. The Third Play by Post Game Day is coming up, and I thought I'd provide another table for The Confirmation. I really enjoy this scenario as it provides good context for your characters to explore why they decided to join the Society and provides opportunities for an array of skills to be useful. So, please be prepared to share your character with us. Just because your character isn't particularly talkative, doesn't mean you can't let us know what they are doing. Words about actions can speak louder than words about... words. :D

I would like to thank bluedove as the following is hi-jacked from her Confirmation recruitment thread for propriety (almost verbatim).

Players should:

  • Be a registered member of Pathfinder Society Organized Play.

  • Apply & post with a complete, legal character of appropriate level. Please include your PFS number for your submitted character on the Alias profile or post it to the discussion thread along with email and information for your Chronicle Sheet.

  • Make sure you are familiar with the rules included in the Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play. It's a free download and part of the core assumption.

  • Commit to check in and post at least once per day on weekdays. Post rate is key in keeping a PBP fresh and interesting to all who participate. I will always understand that life comes first, but this is Official Society Play. Habitual stragglers will be asked to step down if I feel they are not carrying their weight as Pathfinders.

  • Recognize that the rules of Pathfinder Society Organized Play require the player to own the Additional Reasources used to build his/her character. While I will not ask for any proof of ownership, I will expect to be provided with a link to the Online Reference Document when asked. Coding the links into your sheet will save time and is especially appreciated.

  • Provide an abbreviated stat block with your most referenced values on your Classes/Levels field of the character's profile, i.e:
    Class/Level | HP 10/10 | AC: 18 /T: 13 /FF: 15 | F: +4 /R: +3/ W: +0 | CMB +5 | CMD +17 | Speed 20 | Init. +3 | Perc. +4 | S.M. +4 |

  • Provide at least a short section on character background that coordinates with traits selected. This is not a requirement, but very much encouraged as it enriches the role-playing experience.

  • Please, be bold and roll your own actions when you post it! (via the dice expression, see "How to format your text" below the post window) Leaving it to me to look up your attack/skill bonus and roll it for you just makes more work for me. I will make missing rolls, passive rolls for the party as a whole as well as saving throws and initiative rolls when necessary.

As your GM, I will:

  • Finalize tables by midnight on October 30, 2014, if not before then and begin the game before 11:59 pm my time on November 1, 2014.

  • Update the Gameplay thread at least once per day during the week as well as once over the weekend or do my best to notify the group of the reason for the delay.

  • Report our progress and send out Chronicle sheets at the conclusion of each scenario we run.

  • Respond in a timely manner to any questions or concerns.

Hey all! The second PbP GameDay is coming up, and I thought I'd try my hand at GMing. I'll be running The Confirmation.

We will begin when the GameDay begins on April 5th and will finish by July 5th when it ends at the latest, though, hopefully well before that.

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to point this out, but with the recent changes to the site, the [list] and

  • tags (and possibly some other tags, but i only noticed list and bullet issues so far) aren't working.

  • an awakened animal can gain class levels, but does it then also gain the ability score adjustments mentioned in monster advancement?

Sorry if this has already been answered; I couldn't find the answer.

    Core Rulebook wrote:
Because the sorcerer or bard has not prepared the spell in a metamagic form in advance, he must apply the metamagic feat on the spot. Therefore, such a character must also take more time to cast a metamagic spell (one enhanced by a metamagic feat) than he does to cast a regular spell. If the spell’s normal casting time is a standard action, casting a metamagic version is a full-round action for a sorcerer or bard. (This isn’t the same as a 1-round casting time.)

Bold emphasis mine. How exactly is it different from a 1-round cast time?

In the Combat chapter under "Full-Round Actions" and "Cast a Spell"

    Core Rulebook wrote:
A spell that takes one round to cast is a full-round action. It comes into effect just before the beginning of your turn in the round after you began casting the spell. You then act normally after the spell is completed.

Again, bold emphasis mine. Also, if answers could come with sources, that would be great. Thanks!

So... Activating a style is a swift action, Kirin Style requires a swift action Knowledge check to gain any benefits from the style, and Kirin Strike requires it's own swift action to add the damage. Is this really intended to require three separate swift actions (one to activate your style, one to make the knowledge check, and one to finally add the damage)? It seems a bit much... You get no benefit from the swift action to activate Kirin Style until the following round when you can make your knowledge check.

Additionally, this makes that style practically useless in conjunction with Combat Style Master because even though you can now activate your style with a free action and gain the defensive bonuses from the knowledge check in the first round of combat, you had to take a second style feat for that and every time you switch Styles you have a make another knowledge check slowing you down significantly. It's probably fine that Kirin Style is difficult to use with other styles, but since it uses so many swift actions, I almost feel like I have to take a useless second style and Combat Style Master as a feat tax to make the style I want to use viable.
