I dunno about redeeming light, but I can certainly press on. Let's see if we can figure out what they were up to in here. Saif, you maybe ought ta let me go first. I can take a hit nearly as good as I can give 'em; if there's anything dangerous down here it's best for the dwarf to be in the front.

Kror spends some time looking at the floor in the mausoleum, and then at the ground outside the door. Well, we know the goblins were working for someone else; look at these footprints. You see this one larger set mixed in with the small goblin prints? There were... half a dozen gobs, along with one human. Kror continues looking around as he's speaking, and points over to the wall They climbed the wall over there, and then broke into the mausoleum and went inside. If this happened while the town was being attacked, could the whole thing have been a diversion?

Never a good sign, broken door on a mortuary. Let's have a look, shall we? Kror inspects the damaged door, and the stone around it, looking for anything of interest, but especially trying to determine if it was broken from within or from without. Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9 (+2 if there's anything odd about the stonework itself)

Looking for a lost citadel is what I'm supposed to be doing while I'm wandering around. But protecting people in immediate danger seems more important. Besides, if someone sets out to track me down anytime soon, they'll assume that I'm off trying to find the lock to that key, rather than here - I might get a few extra months of adventuring out of that!
You're a dwarf son! Your weapon should be a bloody huge axe of course! Here's what I have planned for Kror in RotRL: Dungeon Rover Ranger 7 / Skyseeker 10 1 Power Attack
You can do Axe & Shield instead; which means you want to go with Two-Weapon Fighting combat style instead, so that you can get the TWF/ITWF/GTWF feats without having the super high Dex that you need. You could go Sword & Shield style, and get Shield Master early (and maybe skip Shield Slam), but now you'll need to have the high Dex for ITWF & GTWF, which is downright un-dwarfy.
As a dwarf ranger built for Rise of the Runelords, I'd recommend the following: Dungeon Rover Ranger 7 / Skyseeker 10 1 Power Attack

Kror wanders in with a handful of sausages, still munching on his breakfast from the inn. Looking around for something to drink, he spots the pitcher. Water? Never drink the stuff. Anyhow. What's up? Town looks rather worse for the wear in the daylight. Want us to go find the goblins lair and rough 'em up; teach 'em not to mess about with Sandpoint?

I guess that this thread is for continuing on to Second Darkness and the other thread is for staying in town for Rise? Either way Kror would certainly spend the night in the bar, not the temple. Kror's willing enough to help carry anyone grievously wounded to the temple, but eventually will wander off to find a tavern.

Kror wanders into the bar, looking around curiously. Ah! Here we go. I suppose everyone's given up on the whole festival thing. I guess it's going to be more a quiet drink in the bar and clean your axe kind of night than a dance and drink until the sun comes up kind of night... So. About that drink?

There doesn't seem to have been much inter-party interaction so far really. Mostly just some NPC interactions and then the gob attack. As I've said before though, I made Kror for Runelords; I do want to play Second Darkness at some point, but I've got other, non-dwarf character ideas for that campaign.

Oh look at that. Their leader is all alone. I'll just go give him some company. Kror rushes the mounted goblin, drawing his axe back in preparation for an enormous overhead chop. Greataxe, Charge, PA, Favored Enemy, Hatred: 1d20 + 3 + 2 - 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 3 + 2 - 1 + 2 + 1 = 22
Male Dwarf Dungeon Rover 1
You call that singing? I'll show you singing! CHAAAARGE! Greataxe, FE, Hatred, PA, Charge: 1d20 + 3 + 2 + 1 - 1 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 3 + 2 + 1 - 1 + 2 = 13
AC reduced by 2. Obviously, if I can't charge, then I don't. Reduce attack roll by 2.

Goblins? This is the best party EVER! Kror takes his axe from his back and heads toward the nearest goblin - or if he can't actually see one toward the closest one he hears. Attack rolls (if relevant): Greataxe, PA, Goblin, FE: 1d20 + 2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 + 1 + 2 = 23 slashing: 1d12 + 3 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 3 + 2 = 10

Or you good sir? You look of strong dwarven stock. Only 1 silver steed a try." Ah, but festivals are for having fun. And watching the "crab king" here nearly herniate himself is much more fun than doing so to myself would be.

Garish displays are fun! That's the entire point! Kror takes both of the mugs from the serving girl at the table, and quickly downs the first. That's actually pretty good beer you have there! You have some more for Kurgan there? He complains less about my youthful exuberance when he's drinking. After setting down the empty mug, Kror starts slowly drinking the second, while wandering over toward the game tables. These look like fun. This stop was a great idea!
It's fine by me. Kror doesn't have a really in-depth background anyhow. He's just a young dwarf who doesn't want to get married and settle down just yet. Going adventuring sounds way more fun, and "looking for a sky citadel" seemed like a great way to get away with doing what he wants for a few more years.

This festival looks like it'll be a good party. Not really in any rush to get to Riddleport. I doubt that it'll lead to anything especially interesting, but it'll keep me busy for a while. Beats going home and getting on with this whole betrothal business at least. Interesting town sign. There's a mirror on it? Let's just check the beard... Yep, it's still rocking. Right, let's see what sort of tavern this town has. Need to join the party. Or start it if need be. Oi! You there! Where's the tavern? It's dead boring traveling all day, and I need a beer!
Kurgan, not to quibble, but I already asked that Kror wind up in the Runelords group (partially because our two dwarven rangers will start out very similar mechanically, but mainly because Kror's specifically intended to be a giant-fighting build - even going Skyseeker for that purpose). It sounds like the initial groups are just basically those who are from Sandpoint vs. those who aren't and we'll be able to switch easily enough once things get started.

The original player's guide didn't have traits because Paizo didn't come up with the idea of them until Second Darkness. Some of the sample campaign traits work well for Runelords characters. The new player's guide for the updated hardcover of Runelords has traits in it as well.
Just a few hours to go. Hopefully selection goes well for Kror. This festival that's supposed to be happening tomorrow in Sandpoint should be a good party. And maybe after it's over, I'll look into the rumors of goblins in the area. Doubt it'll lead to anything especially interesting, but it'll keep me busy for a while. Beats going home and getting on with this whole betrothal business. Interesting town sign. There's a mirror on it? Let's just check the beard... Yep, it's still rocking. Should have enough time to join - or start - the party at whatever sort of tavern this place has. |
