Very cool, loved the comics! Will have to pick these up, might have to see if I can get a couple of my local shops to stock them.

So...next up: return of the Tales novels? ;)

I'm sorry, I might've been away from the forum for a while, but what is this Pathfinder/Starfinder Infinite brand? Is it some sort of semi-sanctioned official content? The alternative seem to be that players can now publish (and sell!?) PACG content based on Paizo's own adventure paths, which I seem to recall was definitely not the case before.

Also, is there a place where we could get a better preview on the design inside? The 3 pages on DriveThru don't even get to a sample scenario (which is what I'd be interested in seeing)

Pretty big news when it was announced a few months ago. Here's the blog post for it: https://paizo.com/community/blog/v5748dyo6sht4?Announcing-Pathfinder-and-St arfinder-Infinite

Excellent article! Tons of info, very fun to compare my personal 3.x-D&D-PF-PFACG timeline with the official timeline!

Only thing I might add is you didn't mention the other two large and successful computer video games: Pathfinder Kingmaker and the just about to be released follow up Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous. Both based on the APs of the same name, publisher/developer is Owlcat Games. PF:KM has been very successful, and WOTR seems on the same trajectory of success.

Two primary campaigns I'm running. (very loose definition of running)

Hell's Vengeance
In Book 3, but have been on Hiatus for a few years now. Need to kick the dust off the tires and either get the old party motivated to pick it back up, or get new players and start from scratch.

Strange Aeons
When lockdown started, I was trying to get people to play in my VTT of choice, Fantasy Grounds. SA is available for it, and several of my players are big Lovecraft fans, so we took off like gang busters! And, then the group pretty much died a couple months in. I need to get that one going again as well.

Since then I've been dabbling with solo play of a few card and board games (RIP PACG) and DCC and CoC. But nothing consistent.

I think I need to just suck it up and realize I have more drive to game than my friends, and just need to join some online-only VTT game groups.

Still such a sad thing. Thank you very much Keith for your insight, helps bring a bit more closure to it all.

Like a few others have eluded to, the whole transition to PF2 and the New card Game just felt....weird. Blog posts were almost hostile towards the old products and the players of those products. Little information on the new products was shared here, it was a lot of 'go check this podcast/random interview/other forum' type of stuff. Just seemed like Paizo suddenly wanted nothing to do with those Old Games and the Old Customers that played them. Tie that with the Old GUard of writers and staff leaving in droves, and it paints a bad image, I think.

I left D&D cause of how Wizards handled that transition from 3.x. There they destroyed the game world to fit the new vision of 4th Ed. Here, while Paizo didn't tear up the game's world, they tore up the Real World instead.

For me, the casual mafia-style shot to the back of the head death of the card game has definitely had me shy away a bit from paizo going forward. Season 7 just stopped midway. My group finished it up and we've played everything else society-wise. We have a local con coming up in about a month and I always run PACS and PFS1 at it, but when the Venture Captain asked me I responded with 'what's the point?' And I mean that in why try to attract new players to games that are officially dead? I still play online with TTS and have even started a solo 3-Hand play through of Mummy's Mask, so my passion for the game is doing fine. Hope to restart either Hell's Vengeance or Strange Aeons this fall for the RPG.

All that said, things change, I understand that. I've got other games I play, other RPGs and Card Games. Just sad that Paizo doesn't 'get along' with me any more. It's not me, it's them, I suppose.

Definitely would like to see either reprints of Vol 1 APs that are out of print at paizo and go for 100+ on ebay, or better yet collected prints of the whole AP. I have held off on picking up a few simply because since I can't get Vol 1....what's the point? (Yes I know PDF is a thing, and yes I even play on VTT, but I like to have Things on Shelves. Don't judge me.)

They don't need to be updated/FAQed, and don't have to be Mini versions either. (To be honest, for an AP I'd want the larger format anyway.) And, don't go hardcover, just softback is fine!

I was hoping for more Unchained books. Another Ultimate Equipment book. Maybe a Spell Tome.

My unrealistic dream was for a Rules Compendium. Or maybe even just a Rules Index to make finding that one feat in that one book easier. (I mean, we have the internet, so it simultaneously proves it can be done (archives of Nethys), and also proves a book wouldn't be needed when you have the HTTP)

If they were to produce stuff now, like others I would be very pleased to just see more adventures. Even if it was just side-by-side notes in current PF2 APS.

Oh, and Tales! Bring back tales! Heck I'd probably still get them even if they're techically PF2 cause, well, ultimate form of fluff.

And, I'm still in the early stages of grief over the Card Game getting the axe yesterday. So...bring that back as well!

And PF1 Society.

Oh....man. Already pining for the good ol' days....

Well, the official news is out and the game is 'dead' with one last Special at PaizoCon '21. Season 7 won't even be finished. :(

Very sad about it. End of an era.

Very sad. The Gut Punch of seeing that 'continue to wind down' statement with no prior indication was ... shocking.

I have greatly enjoyed Season 6 and 7 so far, and the other OP seasons for ACG, the one offs, and the specials kept me going to conventions the last couple years.

I was really hoping to see more Adventure Paths for it, figured that would be a slam dunk post-Core, just drop out a new AP every year or 18mos. But, I guess sales must be that bad?

Well, for me much like PF1, I have plenty of ACG to keep me going for years.

Still, very sad day for us ACG'ers.

Just feels like Paizo doesn't want us 'legacy' PF1 (and now ACG) gamers around anymore...

:(

Very excited about this! I am currently in a SWADE Monster Hunters Intl game right now, and the system is really growing on me. I also have Achtung!Cthulhu which can be run in SW besides CoC, so one day, I'll run some of it. Should be a blast to run some cinematic pulp action in a mythos WWII!

I am definitely interested to see how the SW ruleset takes on Pathfinder. I'm hoping it will give me a way to have a 'fast and loose' version of PF for some of my players that tend to burn out on the Crunch Intensive Pathfinder games, but still want to get their sword and sorcery on in a Golarian setting!

I have a couple in my area in Oct and November that will be doing the new Season 7 stuff. Midwest GameFest in November and Nuke Con first weekend of October. These are our normal local fall cons that moved online this year, so might have some basic badge and game costs, but not sure haven't looked that far yet. (And to be honest, I generally GM at them so I don't have to worry about the fees)

Right, the delay was because retailers were pushing back that they had no room on the shelves for another Big Box and the associated stuff, cause the old stuff wasn't selling. So, Paizo stepped back on the release schedule. I do not know if they chose to totally redo the game at that time to 'match' PF2 or if they were already working on another 'old' version AP like the first 4 sets.

But yeah, I would imagine if they were going to release more we'd know by now. I think the fact that instead of reprinting/making new character decks we got the 'adventure packs' solution says a lot, at least to me.

Personally, I always thought the whole line was on a bit too aggressive of a release schedule, both card game and RPG. But they are a publisher and have to release new stuff. I have been focusing on the Organized aspect of the card game, so I haven't played the actual 'story' in Mummy or New Core & CotCT yet, so I have plenty of material yet to go through (just like PF1, I own almost all of it, so I and my group are good for gaming in that system will we literally retire). But, I will probably dig into the original box game stories soon since Covid has destroyed a lot of in person playing opportunities.

And to be honest, while I have gamed more during covid online than I have played in person the past year or two, I think I am getting a bit burned out with Pixels and Webcams. I really want to sit down at a table and Shuffle Real Cards again!

I would like to see more Card Game products coming though! I bet the next one we get will be one of the new PF2 APs though. I'm not on the PF2 train yet as I already mentioned, so that doesn't excite me as much as it should, I suppose. But more game would be good, and paizo does tell good stories!

Dark Elves in Everquest2 have facial hair.

I'm a longtime Drow player. Usually female though, cause well EQ 1&2. My drow are never good aligned though, that would be silly.
And over on my bookshelf is the original Menzoberranzan box set, so...history.

Anyway, I clicked on this thread as a potential new Starfinder player and was excited that I could be a drow in SF...? Answer unclear...

I put a long post in the ACG subforum. I have a lot of questions about how this will actually work in The Wild.

Some concerns right off the bat:

Convincing someone to give Society a try after a demo game at a store or convention: "You can buy this sorta out of date character deck for $20. Or buy these two big Up To Date boxes for $110..."

What does the box runner do? They are already supplying a set of Core and Throne. Now they have to buy a second set if they want to run packs for themselves? My group for example is 3 of us: I and another have The New Stuff, the 3rd does not (he supplied the last box set for a couple seasons). So right now, he has to use an Old Deck. the Box Runner has to buy a new full set. Only I am in a position to run Pacs. Unless they convince me to split up my box amongst the three of us. That impacts my Home Game, Going to conventions, and/or various other problems that come of My Property being in someone else's possession...

Am I missing something here?

My group was finishing up our 3.5 DemonWeb Pits campaign. That took us through the transition. We'd played all the D&D versions since the 80s. Most of us were not thrilled with 4E, however. Too much changed, and for most of us it was how they 'broke' the World setting to make it fit the new rules. We loved 3.x rules, so I picked up Pathfinder more because it was '3.75' and I figured I would use it as 'home rules' to spice up our next campaign (which was going to be City of the Spider Queen). But after play Crypt of the Everflame to learn the changes, we just stayed playing PF.

Half-way through Hell's Vengeance. Then I want to run Strange Aeons, Crimson Throne, Runelords, and heck, maybe even KingMaker (although the video game version is doing fine for me on that). (And yeah, I'm another that has all the hardcovers, and herolab data and an embarrassingly large stack of APs and splat books...)

We've even started working in Fantasy Grounds for scheduling and time purposes.

I have plenty of other game systems that we already dabble in: DCC, CoC, 5ed, and a few others. I don't want to sound too negative, and of course wish Paizo lots of luck with 2nd Ed, but....it just doesn't seem to be my 'style' and what I want out of Pathfinder, so I'll be sticking with PF1 for quite some time.

I also miss the upcoming products, haunting the LFGS waiting for it to come in, talking with others at the store, my PFS group, my homegroup about the new options.

Heck, I've even already found the few missing books I needed to complete my collection, so I don't even have that to really look forward to now!

But, like others I have enough APs alone to keep my group playing for 10 years at least. And, like others we don't really want to learn and rebuy a system that is so similar. (We are playing some call of cthulhu and even The Greatest/oldest Game evar, ver 5 or however we're allowed to say it here, and various other systems)

But yeah. It's been a hard year in Change for me: Pathfinder reboot. X-Wing minis reboot, a few other games dying off/changing. Heck even my favorite band seems to be changing styles and leaving me behind. :(

Simple answer: You can never have enough dice.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Yes, there is a fine line of balance on both Random and Definite style games. A game with a high random chance is fun and 'dangerous and exciting' but yeah, it really steals from the feeling of success when you build a character to do something well, and they fail because everything is a bit too random and you can sit there and see the obvious randomness that cause the failure. The other extreme, excitement goes away when every encounter is an AutoWin or "I'll only fail if I roll all 1s" type of deal. I mean, why not at that point just say I'm playing character X with build Y, so therefore I have a 98% chance of success. next game!

All that said, I'm still super excited about the game and can't wait for it to arrive at my door!

As a GM, I love it. Less paperwork. Less dealing with that one player that misses every other session and complains about being behind on XP. None of that "You have to go hunt wolves for a couple sessions before we can move on" immersion breaking stuff.

The APs have a guide at the beginning to tell you what levels for each chapter. Very handy, and that's where I started using it from.

About the only downside to the system is it can be a bit anti-climatic when at the end of a session the GM says "Okay...uh...level up for next week." I think players do like tracking XP and treasure to get that sense of progress. But, the pros of Milestone XP outweigh that, I think.

I've also been playing in Outpost, and it has surprised me how much fun the ACG is online! Small time investment per day, and once you get the hang of the spreadsheet and how to format your post, it's pretty fun! And, as others have mentioned, there's a lot more RP'ing going on online!

I got a bit burned out on the physical card game. I was playing in two separate groups, and it just got to be a chore. Everyone was just dropping cards and crunching numbers, little role playing, heck we basically just skimmed the card for the stats we needed. It felt more like a mechanical exercise than a game.

But, PbP has brought me back in! I dusted off my Witch deck for Outpost, and just picked up the HV2 deck (cause I'm totally crushing on Nyctessa!) that I plan on using either online, or perhaps in my local Society card group. I'm even looking at that Mummy's Mask combo, thinking it would be nice to have that next to my RotRL set if my group ever wants to get back into it...

You also just missed thier Kickstarter for a whole book full of exactly what you're looking for, little one-two level stand alone adventures. It should be available to buy in a few months though.

Also, try a website called DonJon, I believe. Lots of tools to make random dungeon maps, monster lists, loot list, etc.

Disregard my rambling, book was at the store today!

Kamicosmos wrote:

What's the actual street date of this book?

It looks like it's shipping from Paizo. The PDF is available today. But, online sources are saying Oct 10. My FLGS that I get my PF stuff from usually sets the books on the shelf the day they get it, even if it's before the street date, and when I inquired about it, they looked at me funny.

Anyway, my long winded point is, I have a business trip next week, and was hoping to see the book on the shelf so I could take it with me. So, now I'm wondering if I should plan a book hunt while on my trip (I'll have a rental car, whoooo!) or if I should just order direct and have it waiting when I get home in a week....

I suppose I could just snag the PDF for now, and can read it on the plane on my Surface...

I hope it's predominately all evil vs good. The few games that have come before where you get to be the Bad Guys always has you start off fighting the good guys, and then there's some internal conflict that comes up that you're sent to deal with, and you wind up fighting the Same Old Bad Guys anyway. (TIE Fighter, I'm thinking specifically of you!)

I am really looking forward to my players being bad guys going up against my (for once!) Good Paladins and Clerics. A few encounters against 'fellow' evil characters along the way is fine, but I will be greatly disappointed if half the adventure winds up being Bad vs Bad....

I actually just bought Runelords, and all the expansions, through the sale. I told my friends to prepare for some serious RotRLPFACG Organized Play action!

And, then my venture lt, who runs the ACG said, nope, Runelords doesn't count for Organized play.

I was a sad panda, but figured, well, we'll still play it, and maybe do Mummy's Mask when it comes out.

I bought 3 different Pathfinder shirts for GenCon. I too just can't stand wearing the same shirt more than one day in a row. And, even at the Con, just wearing it for 16 hours or more was enough.

But as far as the topic goes, I'd actually like to see more actual pathfinder gaming equipment granting re-rolls, like GM Lamplighter suggests. Perhaps having an official set of pathfinder dice, actually bringing all of your physical books for that character. Heck, let the GMs perhaps give out a few: "Your mini is awesome! Free Reroll!" "That was a really creative line/action, free reroll later in the game!" Of course, I can see that getting abused, so I dunno.

I always bring my buff and condition decks, for example, and pass out the cards as needed. That should be worth a reroll.

But, yeah, the plushies should be good for a re-roll. I've wondered about the Paziocon pint glasses as well. Granted, I want to go and get one in person, not just buy it off the site...

I picked this up last summer (I just missed getting in on the Kickstarter, so was excessively happy to find it right here at Paizo!) primarily to use as an Underdark source book for Pathfinder.

But, now I am getting ready to GM it starting in a couple weeks, and absolutely can't wait! It looks so fun! Just the Keep alone is an epic dungeon crawl that I really want to play a rogue through! It will be hard to conceal my jealousy as the party rogue gets to go through it! And, that Epic Ending! My players are going to love it. I love GM'ing Drow! So much more fun than just normal, run of the mill, shell fodder monsters!

Wow, sounds like you have a Killer DM that needs to take it down a notch. A party shouldn't have to rely on buying higher level items to take on creatures that are that difficult for their level. Especially when following a published AP. It's one thing to tweak a few stats here and there to compensate for something the party is doing (super optimized fighter stomping through stuff with ease, a rogue that is a little too good at searching out traps, etc.) But...deeper darkness and multiple TPKs? He needs to calm down and remember that his job is NOT to kill players constantly.

Unfortunately that has been happening with hardcovers a lot lately. Anytime you give people time to speculate or think about something that covers a broad area but has little information, people start making decisions on what HAS to be in the book, and thus get mad when something isn't in the book (or worse, Paizo does the opposite).

It's even worse for this book, since all the talk of killing sacred cows has let people's imaginations going crazy on what is in the book...

I think we're just going to get a book with optional rules, very much like the Arcana Unearthed books.

I always envision one of the 'Cleaners' from the action movies coming into the dungeon, dropping everything around very efficiently, cleaning up the mess, and then vanishing without a trace. I should try to roll up the NPC that could actually pull off 'PC Adventurer Corpse Retrieval'...

(Reminds me of the original Everquest when people would sent out a call for a stealthy Ranger or a Rogue to come literally drag their corpse away from the mob that killed them, so that the player could recover their gear. It paid pretty dang well!)

8 people marked this as a favorite.

I like to take a random NPC that the party interacts with, and make them more important. It often turns into a pretty good sidequest, and often times, when my players are reminiscing, they have fond memories of those non-standard quests.

Couple examples: Party had retrieved a cool sword which was a touch OP, to be honest and I felt the party needed to 'earn' it a bit more than how it was retrieved. So, I had it get stolen, and a demon eventually got a hold of it. They got it back, but wound up losing it again and had to go off and get it. They became very protective of the sword, and were very pleased with it's performance once they got to use it in battles.

Party was a shoot first, ask questions later type. So, I let them do what they do the next time they ran into a random nameless NPC. Module as written, the guy was just one of the villagers that vanished recently, and had no real info to offer the party. I let the party do what they do, which was take a shot at him first. I let him get hurt, and he took off running, they chased and hit him with some arrows and magic missiles. He got away. They returned to town after the adventure to discover this particular NPC was a relative of the Mayor's . So, that set off a nice little mini-quest/end game of them trying to save face with the village.

I like to throw curve balls like these into my game to keep my players on their toes. It's very easy now-a-days for a player to see the module at a store, online, or even played it before, so I like to mix things up a bit. Just because the Farmer's Daughter was innocent when you read it, doesn't mean she's not a succubus now!
