Interrogating:

And just like that, that the group had split.

The Tiefling scratched the spot where an arrow had struck his shoulder. More like that armor protected you, he thought.

*******After translating the goblin’s words******

Din shrugged, ”I don't know about you two but, I'm fine with leaving it tied up for a while. Until we take care if other things,” he nudged the goblin with his boot, ”Maybe he'll reconsider?”
Shorter post for me. I'm in bed sick.

After Zal left Din turned his attention back to the group. He forced himself to give off an air of calm and he would have succeeded too if it weren't for that blasted tail, ”Half this town thinks I'm a loon, yet most of you 'battle hardened types” think it’s heroic to throw yourselves on to some blades. I'm real sorry that the curator was taken. I am.” Din motioned to the destruction around them, ”But while you lot are off getting yourselves killed, this 'compassionless monster’ is going to help bury my neighbors and put out fires. Come tomorrow, when I have a better understanding of what's going on, I'll come fish your bodies out of the river.”Din blinked, realizing that he was staring straight at Kra'el's….nethers, ”Nearly forgot about that.”

He took a step towards Kra'el, ”Me and the smart Steel Mage Javos will deal with that thing while you're gone.” Din softened and added, ”I hope your god protects you.”

"Stay."

Nothing like a little bit of fear surfacing as misdirected anger to push a little bit of character development.

Also, apparently Din is somewhat scared of the dark?

Man, things get weird when you let your character write himself.

”Just because some of us can see in the dark, doesn't mean we want to see what's out there,” Din mumbled to no one in particular.

He avoided making eye contact with Zalindra as the group headed for the, the shame of his thoughts weighing heavy on his shoulders. He told himself that if he had more that just his cantrips still he would have been the first to suggest rushing off to save the old man. The truth was that Din had seen what lurked in the inky shadows outside of Brindol. The monsters with their gnashing maws. The sticky saliva that dripped as the beasts creeped closer.

But the things that terrified him the most were the monsters that looked and walked and spoke like people. The ones that would buy you a drink while slipping a noose around your neck. And he knew those were out there.

No. Chasing after the goblins at this hour was foolish.
———————

Din mimed striking a match and spoke in Infernal ”Би жарығы.” Moments later four ghostly lanterns appeared around the group.

Infernal:
”Dancing lights”

”I agree with the Steel Mage,” Din gestured at Javos, a grin struggling to be reigned in, ”I think we should regroup and report what we've discovered to the Lore Warden. Tomorrow the fight can be on our terms.”

Din was not sure how things would go if the others decided to go chasing the goblin army. Outside the walls. At night.

”What happens when our ragtag group finds the gobs? Huh? Or worse, what happens if we don't find them and we wander for hours in the dark until they find us? We were lucky to survive those first attacks and both fights we outnumbered them. What happens when the numbers are in their favor?” Din paused to catch his breath and pointed to Zalindra, ”If you can tell me, honestly, that your grandfather would want you risking your life by maybe running in the right direction, in the middle of the night, then I'll be right beside you. Otherwise, I think we should wait until the sun is on our side.”
The four lanterns sputtered out a few seconds later and the tiefling let his thoughts keep to the shadows with him as he looked passed the guards and through the gate, ....would I go?

Dinvirte had been following along. Listening, thinking. The others hadn't seen convinced on his theory of why they attacked the Hall. Hell, I'm not entirely convinced, he thought as they had come across the dead guards.

The Tiefling continued to rack his brain as Javos came clanking up to the group. A sudden image of the heavily armored man simply running into and through Din sent a shiver down his spine. He stepped aside as Javos joined them and nodded slowly when Dayana spoke.

Something doesn't add up…. he mused. Din realized that he had been staring into one if the open eyes of the dead men and just before he forced himself to look away his tail flicked up.

”Can any or you determine how long ago those men died?” Din swatted at the tip of his tail, ”I'm getting there!” He said.

”Goblinoids prefer to be underground, right? It's part if the reason we we're so caught off guard; attacking in broad daylight. Could it be that they came in this way while the main force was distracted but fled through an underground pass?” Din squeezed an eye shut as if in pain and tried to remember of any tunnels, old or new, that led out of the city.

Din lingered outside of the office while Zalindra searched inside. He figured that the girl had the sole right to enter the room at the moment and when she raced back out towards the museum area, Din followed–only pausing momentarily to consider using a detect magic cantrip in the office. Seems….intrusive, he thought as he peered into the office.

With the group in the museum proper, Din kept an uncomfortable closeness to Aelion as the elf put the clues together. He occasionally muttered various musings to no one in particular.

When the scene was laid out before the group Dinner waited to see what the others thought before chiming in, ”Can anyone else connect the dots?” He paused as if waiting for an answer but continued before anyone could speak, ”These relics were the target. The attacks were a distraction, as Din spoke he gesticulated more and more and his eyes moved feverishly as if he was placing the puzzle pieces just as he could vocalize his thoughts.

"The old man was taken because of course you would take the person who has spent the most time with the goods and probably has forgotten more about the stuff that most people have ever known. We've found several we like. It's the price that is the problem.

On a whim we looked in the neighborhood where my wife's grandparents live (a really bad neighborhood) and they were asking ~200k for 1000' ft homes.

It blows my mind how much they want in an area where houses are regularly broken into.

Din feigned being hurt, ”I seem to recall I set it on fire. He glanced at Cecilia and tried to convince himself that sometimes people get hurt in fights and to not worry about it.

With the Hall before them, it's door barely hanging on, Din cursed himself for thinking that the fight with the ogre had been the only threat. There's always another secret. Always another monster. He had awoken that morning with a sense of dread and was now wishing he had listened to his gut and prepared more combat spells. Well, live and learn. He looked at the charred tree, Please, let me live.

Din forced a grin at Aelion as they followed Kra'el and Zalindra inside, ”The only gods are those that sit around using us as pawns in some idiotic game where dice control our fates. But now's not the time for that, we have more important things to worry about.” Of course he didn't believe that, it was ridiculous. Even for him. But it usually managed to get a rise out of people so he liked to throw that fake truth out there every now and then.

Din nudged one of the hob corpses with his boot as the others stripped the others of anything useful, ”How did you all get here…” he muttered as the group discussed where to go first.

Like some of the others, he was sure, Din felt that the smartest place to go to was the North bridge. But something about the way Zalindra worried about her grandfather pulled on him. It's one thing to help the people, it's another to help a person.

Plus, everyone else seemed to be in agreement to go to the Hall. Armed with only cantrips, a dagger, and seven crossbow bolts, Din knew he wouldn't survive by himself for very long.

Din had been eyeing the triangular head peeking from Day’s bag when he caught Aelion doing the same and, subsequently, shaking his head. He grinned and loaded a bolt, ”I know some pretty indecent people that would help too. They would just need the promise of coin first.” He felt a pang of regret at the words and quickly added, ”You're right though. We took down that group fairly easily. And with an ogre backing them as well.”

Din watched Kra'el swaddle the goblin in rope. The image brought back the irritation on his wrists and the dank taste of the stygian cell he had once been kept in.

He shook his head, sending the memory back to its own cell and look at his tail which had been pointing at his face, ”Yeah, I know. I try to tell everyone about the conspiracies and they all call me a lunatic. Now all of sudden it's,” he affected a snobbish tone,”‘these monsters must have someone in Brindol helping them!’” He sighed and took a few steps away from the wagon.

The tiefling had just been about to cast prestidigitation to clean his clothing of the soot, blood, and dirt when Ingra began reprimanding Cecilia. He paused mid-gesture, the incantation on his lips, and waited for the dwarf to finish ranting before stepping over to Cecilia.

”Lady Hawthorne, don't mind her. Dwarves are known to be cranky. The part of their brains that controls temper is mostly stone."A joke of course. He had checked years ago on a cadaver. "Sorry about the pitch. Heat of the–engrossed in the battle.”

That was disgusting, Din thought as he watched the acid spew from Kra'el's maw. Though the sight did make him curious as to what would happen if the dragonborn were to drink acid. Perhaps Kra'el was behind the small crime spree the year before wherein the perpetrators robbed several alchemist shops. He made a mental note of this as he reloaded the crossbow and fired again, this time at the goblin in blue.

Suddenly realizing his own proximity to that same hob who was still holding a bow, Din dropped prone next to the table. Move:5’ step, Standard: Cast spell, Free: Drop prone +4 AC vs ranged attacks.

Din had started to stretch a hand out to the woman near the now dazed goblin when a different part if the tavern caught fire. ”біз түсінеміз! Ол саған ұнайды afo!” He used the Infernal word for “fire.” An artistic choice, of course.

Lady Hawthorne attempting to slide across the bartop brought his attention to the barrel of ale the barkeep had set up. Din grinned and opened the tap, letting the ale flow down into the flames.

Din grimaced and thought, Sometimes I really hate being so amazing.
He hustled through the flames, shooing the fire away to keep from catching fire. once on the other side he held a hand out to the woman, ”Time to go!”

Din was eyed the mug of ale set before him by “Mirtala.” Most poisoners liked to have some other hapless fool be the deliverer of the poisoned drink. At least, the ones bad at their job did. The skilled poisoners knew to how to use this common knowledge to get their victim to suspect the wrong person.

He was just about to explain this to the people that he apparently, would be traveling to Overlook with, when the front door exploded. The end of Din’s tail turns to “look” at the bursting door before his head does, a reflex that had formed over years of doing it as a joke.

”They found me!” Din shouted before realizing what had burst through. ”These guys are not here for me. So why are they–” the thought was cut off as two of the other patrons are split open.

”Time to go, sir!” Din’s tail nodded in response and the Tiefling scrambled away from the table to the other side of the tavern.

Double move. No clear shot/lack of range atm.

Dinvirte waited patiently for everyone to o finish reading the he notice before he plucked it from the table with his tail. He leaned back in the chair and struggled to recall anything important about Overlook beyond the makeup of the general populace and instead elected to remain quiet for much of the discussion. You tend to learn what question to ask the longer you take to ask it.

Din jumped a bit when Kra’el spoke, having lost himself in thought regarding the tanned elf's “Council of Elders.”

”Sure, we could all form some happyband of travelers but, I think everyone here is ignoring the possibility that this could all be a ruse. An elaborate plan to pull us away from the safety of Brindol and drop us right into the clutches of this 'Orc army,'" he did air quotes with one hand while his tail completed the pair. ”But why?”

Din scratched at the small patch of hair on his chin,"....could be this Council….makes no sense….maybe the cobbler's guild…" His tail shook its “head,” ”I suppose the only way to find out the truth is to check it out in person,” he grinned, "So who's buying our celebratory drinks?!”

I saw the announcement before I went to bed and decided I'd check in when I got up. I was not expecting so many posts but I guess that's bound to happen with 9!

I need to read through a few more PCs but, anyone that has spent some time at Ilya's they would probably be familiar with the Din. He's the Tiefling talking to anyone who will listen about the weird things that make no sense in the world so they must be some conspiracy.

Sometimes GMs have to make decisions on the application of rules.

Regarding PFS: the lack of GM discretion is one of the reasons why I don't play PFS.

For what it's worth, if I am playing a mid/high level wizard and we don't have any healing class available, I will use Summon Monster V for a bralani azata - 2 x Cure Serious Wounds.

It can't be easy to schedule design time for work which isn't directly tied to new product. "When we get a chance" is probably the reality.

I don't believe that Paizo will fix the monk.

This is a poorly written and underpowered feat. No "real" PC or NPC would ever take this feat because it is so situational.

This feat is for GMs who want to throw in an occasional curveball to the group, in this case to mess with the group's rogue. I don't see a problem with that approach.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Not according to the rules. Accidental kills can happen. If you need to capture rather than kill an enemy, it is better to use non-lethal damage. A sap is a great weapon for this.

Nimble Moves and Acrobatic Steps are very weak feats. The price of the item is about right. The cost in feats is excessive. I would never spend even a single feat to get both features. I might consider spending a trait to get them.

I find this is common amongst such roleplayers. They almost always think they are doing better than they are.

That's baseless speculation. If I said what I think of your claim of insight into the practices of ALL playing groups, my post would be deleted.

I actually have house-rules for some of these:

1. Falling inflicts Constitution damage, not hit-point damage. 1d4 for the first 10' and +1 per every 10' after. Hit zero Con and you are dead no matter how many hp you have. Players in my game make damn sure they are roped together and pitoned securely or someone has a feather fall prepped. That an having a good acrobatics skill to try and lessen the damage from a fall.

2. I keep track of how much damage someones armor in my game takes. Basically, for every 10 full points of damage dealt to the character, the armor takes 1 hit point of damage, ignoring hardness. At zero hit points, it becomes broken. If it takes twice that amount of damage, it is ruined.

3. Natural '1' is a miss that damages the weapon's hit points, meaning you actually hit something (maybe even your target), but you hit it bad wrong. This damage is done exactly as sunder, just as if you were swinging that weapon: hope you weren't power-attacking two-handed Mr. Raging Barbarian, sir.

4. You bet it does. Had to leave half the rope in your climbing kit behind? The kit loses weight. You have a healing kit? Each time your use it the supplies get lower and WILL run...

If I ever play in one of your games, I will definitely play a wizard.

How...i just don't see it.

You fell into the trap. Powerful Sneak gives an extra 1/6 of a point of damage per sneak attack die. You would need to be level 23 to get 2 extra points of damage per sneak attack. And it only works with full attacks. And you take a -2 penalty, so you hit less often - so you end up doing less damage.

I don't like it. It gives wizards a cheap AC bonus.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

While a few specialized builds can actually make use of Combat Expertise in itself, it is generally no more than a feat tax and Int tax for anyone who wants the subsequent manoeuvre-based feats.

Since Pathfinder improved Toughness and Dodge, Combat Expertise now ranks alongside Endurance as the worst feat in the game.

In Paizo's defence, this feat (and its Int tax) has been around since 3.0. Actually in 3.0 it also had the worst feat name: Expertise, which actually means nothing at all in the context of feats.

I will certainly never create a character that takes Combat Expertise. That prevents me from taking any of the subsequent feats, some of which are potentially quite useful. There are character concepts that I would like to try out such as the trip expert, but I am not prepared to pay the tax.

In my opinion, it looks balanced.

Comparison with a kukri: you're spending a feat for thrown ranged attack increment, disarm feature, and +1 shield bonus to AC.

Comparison with a light spiked shield: the main gauche is cheaper, has a better threat range, a thrown ranged attack increment, and the disarm feature. However the main gauche's AC cannot be magically enhanced. And you're spending a feat to use the main gauche.

Comparison to using the feat two-weapon defence with a kukri: the main gauche has a thrown range increment and the disarm feature. Two-weapon defence gives a bonus with fighting defensively/total defence.

In most situations, the light spiked shield is a better option, because most melee characters do not need to spend a feat for proficiency. Also, the shield is magically enhanceable. In low magic settings, a two-weapon fighting rogue might prefer the main gauche, because the rogue isn't automatically proficient with a spiked shield or kukri.

From a "fluff" point of view, I think that it would be better without the thrown range increment (is a main gauche really an effective thrown weapon?) but with the two-weapon defence's bonus to AC when fighting defensively/total defence, i.e. the shield bonus to AC increases to +2.

Dude, it's only a game. So what if you had to take a standard action instead of a move action? Is this really a good reason to interrupt the game? You should have just accepted it during the session, then e-mailed the GM afterwards.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It's worth mentioning the feat tax: Endurance. In 3.5, it used to be one of the three worst feats in the game, alongside Dodge and Toughness.

In Pathfinder, Dodge & Toughness have been improved, leaving Endurance as the worst feat in the game.

The mechanical benefits of wearing medium armour while sleeping and the resistance to fatigue just aren't worth spending a feat on. You want to wear armour while sleeping? Buy a chain shirt.

Diehard itself isn't a bad feat. But the feat tax makes it a poor choice.

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate. 1 person marked this as a favorite.

A mithral chain shirt is light armour. Adding the armoured kilt makes it medium.

I don't see why a mithral armoured kilt should prevent the armour category from increasing. If your GM allows a mithral armoured kilt to be added without increasing the the armour category, it becomes a "must have" item for every fighter-type character.
