The founder of Chaosium and developer of the world of Glorantha, the setting for the first Basic Roleplay game. Details HERE.

I never played much RuneQuest, back in the day, but its success indicated that there was a considerable market for non-Gygaxian RPGs. Rest in peace, sir. You made a lot of peoples' lives more enjoyable, and that is no mean feat.

Between the time I got the notification that #4898753 was in the queue and the time I got the notification that it'd been finalized, I subscribed to Starfinder (that was #4798106). When I placed the Starfinder subscription order I put it into my sidecart, intending that Pact Worlds would be shipped with #4898753. When I got the shipment email for #4898753, though, Pact Worlds wasn't included. Two questions: first, would it have been if I hadn't put the subscription order into my sidecart? Second, when will Pact Worlds be shipped?

I inadvertently deleted my first Starfinder Society character, and if possible would like it restored so that I can use the starting character boon. Thank you!

As reported in Locus. She was 86.

I don't know whether the Pliocene Exiles Saga is still popular; I read it in the 80s, and enjoyed it quite a lot. After the Galactic Milieu trilogy was completed I pretty much stopped reading her books, but it looks like she wrote another couple of trilogies after that.

This order is sidecarted, to ship with my next subscription shipment. It also includes a back-ordered item, and I'd like the entire order held until the next subscription shipment after that item is available. (It's been promised for this month, but we shall see.) Thanks!

TMZ is reporting that Tom Petty was found unconscious and in full cardiac arrest. They're also saying he's been taken off of life support. Have seen no other independent reports.

ETA: CBS News confirms that he has died.

Damn.

My wife was going through the candidates for our local city council election the other night, and stopped to ask me and our son if either of us had ever heard of Legendary Games. One of the candidates listed their occupation as Business Director at Legendary Games. What's the name, I asked. Rachel Ventura, she replied.

Yes, that's right. Blonde Frog is running for city council. Small world, eh? I'm not sure of the wisdom of voting for someone who lists their occupation as thief, though I'll give her points for honesty.

For character generation and OOC discussion.

The crunch: 15 point build, one free variant multiclass, two traits, no 3PP material, would prefer that you stick to races that could plausibly be picked as caravan guards in the backwoods of Taldor (not that you'll be guarding any caravans, but that's the easiest justification for how you come to be in the adventure), unchained summoner and rogue, and some feat condensations & eliminations:

Power Attack, Weapon Finesse, Piranha Strike, and Combat Expertise can be used by anyone who meets the prerequisites.
Dodge & Mobility are combined into a single feat (+1 dodge bonus to AC at all times, increasing to +4 vs. AoOs when moving).
Two-Weapon Fighting increases in benefit to Improved Two-Weapon Fighting when the prerequisites of the latter feat are met.

There may be others, as well.

This is PFS campaign mode, so you'll all get chronicle sheets that you can apply to an existing PFS character.

Last but not least, I have only three players so far. Do any of you know of someone who might be interested in playing? I'd like to keep it to four characters.

Questions?

Pete Gaylord, age 73, died yesterday. Gaylord was the first person to ever play a magic user in the first true RPG, Dave Arneson's Blackmoor campaign. See HERE for more details. RIP, Pete. Generations of magic-users, illusionists, wizards, sorcerers, and arcanists thank you.

Today is Dame Judi Dench's 81st birthday. She'll probably spend it doing something other than running D&D for her grandchildren, but AIUI she does that on occasion. Something else to thank Vin Diesel for (apparently he got her playing on the set of The Chronicles of Riddick).

As some of you may know, Jack Herman and Jeff Dee are trying to get the rights to the V&V trademark back from their former publisher. They apparently have the rights to the game itself, but the trademark issue is muddy enough that the owner of FGU is suing them for publishing it. They're trying to raise money for their legal costs through GoFundMe (link HERE), if any of you are willing and able to help out.

Here's a LINK to their company, if you want more information.

ETA: Here's a somewhat more detailed description of the legal issues involved.

The subject order was received by UPSMI on September 26, according to the tracking information, and was acknowledged as "Ready for post office entry" on September 29. Since then there have been no updates to the tracking info, and it hasn't shown up at my address. Is there any way you can check on its status?

Rise of the Runelords|Dragon's Demand| Giantslayer|Emerald Spire

Standing in a wide clearing within the Echo Wood, six miles northeast of Fort Inevitable, the Emerald Spire is the ruin of a large Azlanti tower that appears to be made of green glass harder than stone. The upper portions of the tower were destroyed long ago, leaving broken, half-melted glass blocks lying jumbled around the tower’s perimeter and the ground nearby. The site is well known to locals from both Fort Inevitable and Thornkeep, and many travelers passing through the Crusader Road area make the trek into the forest to look on the ruins—from a safe distance. The Spire’s ruins are known to be infested with dangerous monsters, and the surroundings attract an unhealthy number of bandits, raiders, and hungry predators.

It's the sort of place that cries out for Pathfinder investigations, so here you are....

Weakly Godlike Entity

The return to Absalom is nearly the mirror image of the outbound journey--the boat you take downriver is packed to the gunwales with refugees, making for a rather unpleasant leg. Then it's a matter of waiting a day or so for Sea Nymph and her odd crew, and a leisurely voyage back that's much more comfortable than the high-speed run to Cheliax. (The steersman looks a little disappointed; you get the idea that he really enjoys windy days.)

The by-now familiar house looks the same, and Gallowsmith's image awaits. After a quick transfer of information from Besmarial, the sage shakes his head. "You were lucky that the gravest threats to the child's well-being attacked quickly, before your presence could drive her parents to run. And those orcs! That is indeed troubling...the unseen adversary may be behind them.

"This leads me to your next mission. The keystone for our Golarion is--at least for the moment--an idol of Irori at a monastery in northern Osirion. The monks there guard it well, but I was concerned about its safety and sent a few of your fellow agents there. Dashel, Conner--you may remember Krolmnite and Lyekeli? While there, Lyekeli noticed a sort of resonance on the idol, a peculiar phenomenon which she was unable to analyze. I investigated further, and I believe that an analog to the idol in another Golarion may be used to damage ours via a ritual of sympathetic magic. I need you to travel to that other Golarion, find the idol, and stop the ritual. However, I have another task for which Grungar is well suited, so his path must take him elsewhere--Krolmnite and, I believe, another agent will be able to assist you, though. You'll meet Krolmnite in Osirion. Give me your compass, Drovic, and I shall attune it to the rift that will take you to the other Golarion."

Two openings in an ongoing Kingmaker PbP campaign. The original recruitment thread is HERE, but since the group has just finished Part I the title no longer applied.

The background: current party composition is

  • Human Pal4
  • Human Ora4 (Time)
  • Human Wiz4 (Conjurer)
  • Half-elf Wit4 (but can change up if need be)

As you can see, we don't need any more arcanists. Combat power, woodsy stuff, face skills...all of these would be fine things for the party to have.

Character Creation:

  • 4th level
  • 15 point buy + stat bump at 4th
  • Average WBL (subject to change)
  • Max hp at first level; roll thereafter, but if less than half die+1 take half die+1
  • 2 traits (one campaign trait, one other)
  • Sources: Core, APG, Paizo Ultimates books, and will negotiate on any other Paizo material; no 3PP for this one, as the only such material I own is DSP's Ultimate Psionics, and I don't see that fitting well here.

For recruitment, I'd like a short (paragraph or three) character description, giving some information about why you want to civilize a large stretch of godsforsaken wilderness and how you come to have the opportunity to do so. Depending on interest I'll keep recruitment open for at least a few days, and make a decision by the weekend after next. You'll be coming in at the beginning of Part II.

Links to the rest of the party, the gameplay thread, and the discussion thread are on my profile. I don't know how to describe my reffing style, so I'll let it speak for itself.

When the unfortunately little-known (but excellent) author John M. Ford died in 2006, he was 1) in a relationship that had no legal existence and 2) had not made out a will. As a result, copyright for virtually all of his published works not at that time in print passed to his parents. Who, as a result of their strong opinions on item 1) (and on Ford's choice of career), decided that they were not going to allow any of those works to be republished. The only exceptions to this, as far as anyone knows now, are the two Star Trek novels he wrote, which are the property of Paramount Pictures; and "The Dragon Waiting," which was in print when he died and will remain in print in perpetuity to keep it out of his parents' hands.

There was also the novel he was working on when he died, about which I know nothing but the title, "Aspects." This had been initially submitted to Tor Books for publication, but had not reached the point of being publishable to everyone's satisfaction. There was a reasonable chance that because it had been submitted to Tor, they had the copyright and could at their discretion publish what they had from Ford. I'm not sure what sort of legal wrangling took place out of the public eye; it has come to nothing, though, as it was announced at Boskone this past February that "Aspects" would not be able to be released.

So all of you aspiring writers out there, think for a minute about who gets the rights to your stuff should you pass from this mortal coil prematurely, and think about who you want to get the rights. And plan accordingly.

Details HERE from Castle Perilous Games and Books in Carbondale IL. Sounds like there was at least a chance, before the end, of finally getting a Wormy collection, but it came to nothing. I don't know all the details of why he walked away from TSR/WOTC, or whose fault it was, but I regret it nevertheless. I always preferred his art to Sutherland's (though for my money Jeff Dee was a better sketcher than either of them).

You know the drill; put OOC stuff here.

Weakly Godlike Entity

On their return from Kyonin, the party enters Gallowsmith's residence and finds the usual spread of food. Prester Gallowsmith rises from the mosaic in the same way as he did before and greets you warmly, his light tenor voice carrying a note of elation that had been absent the last time any of you spoke with him. "Besmarial?" In response, the Cassissian angel who had accompanied you on your mission flits over and into the column of mosaic tiles in Gallowsmith's form, which flies apart into a cloud of separate tiles. After a moment, it reforms into Gallowsmith. "Ah. That was quite the adventure, wasn't it? I am pleased that you all came through so well. Your success has changed the face of the pattern of rifts, and many have vanished. As you may have noticed, the Great Rift over Absalom has partially closed, so it is no longer quite so unbearably hot here. And that is merely the most obvious of the changes you have brought about.

"But the great work continues, and while you were gone something changed here: an adversary--someone working to forestall our efforts--has been revealed. I was attacked here while distracted with the challenge of returning your companion Xavier's body; at first I thought that it was a coincidence, but many of my counterparts in other Golarions were beset at the same time. The attackers were simple mercenaries, hired for a few coins on the streets of Absalom by someone unusual in his complete unremarkability. I continue to investigate, and I have configured my plan to include defense of some of the more critical anchors. Lyekeli, I shall need you, Krolmnite, and Ava to journey to Osirion and join a party of investigators there. Duncan--I have been told there is a message for you, if you will but listen."

The gruff dwarf breathes deeply in the silence following Gallowsmith's words. His eyes widen in awe, staring away at nothing in particular. "Thank ye, lord. Thank ye!" He clears his throat and looks around at the rest of you, eyes moist. "I'm going home! It's been an honor t'fight at your sides. I'll not likely see you again--may Angradd's blessing go with all of you." He turns and walks out, head held high and an unaccustomed smile on his face.

Gallowsmith looks after him with a smile of his own. "Conner, Dashel--I have a task for you two as well. It's rather delicate, I'm afraid, but it's my hope that it won't be as onerous as your last. Just in case, though, I have requested two others to join you. Drovic and insert name here have served the cause well in other worlds; I think you'll work well together.

"Now, the task. As I told you before, each alternate Golarion has a keystone on which its integrity rests. With the destruction of the Dark Road I have perceived that the identity of the keystone can change, depending on the other keystones. For a short time--perhaps a week, perhaps two--the keystone in another fragment is going to be a...well, allow me to show you." The tiles making up his form again swirl together and coalesce into the shape of a small hut in a forest. As you watch, it seems to grow closer, as if you were walking towards it. Your viewpoint reaches the single door, which opens into a candlelit room. In the room, a woman works at a counter, preparing a meal. A man sits next to a cradle, rocking it with one foot while a baby slumbers within. The viewpoint moves across the room and approaches the sleeping baby. Gallowsmith's voice comes from all around you. "She is the key, for a little while, and must be protected. But she lives in what would be Cheliax, in our world, on the edge of the Whisperwood. You must go there and guard her. But there is a small complication--she and her parents must not learn of your watch, for if she's disturbed she may remain the keystone beyond her time."
