Drawing a Weapon after Starting a Move?

I wasn't able to find answers to these related questions in the FAQs or previous posts:

1) a character has readied an action to sunder or disarm (doesn't matter which for this argument, I think) when an enemy approaches them. The enemy moves to attack and the sunder/disarm attempt succeeds. If the enemy has at least +1 BAB but lacks the Quick Draw feat, can they draw a backup weapon as part of the move action they used to close and attack that round, even though the move action is done?

2) What if the character is using a reach weapon? Can the enemy draw a backup weapon as part of their as-yet incomplete move action, and attack that round?

3) Does the answer to 2) change if the character is making the sunder/disarm attempt as an AoO with a reach weapon?

Thanks much!

no to all three. You may only draw one weapon as part of your move action without quick draw. If they wish to draw a second weapon either as an offhand or as a backup during the same move action then they must have quick draw, otherwise it will use their standard action to draw it in the same round or a move action on the following turn.

Thanks for the quick reply! Is that the case even if the enemy already had a weapon drawn when they started to move?

Chell is assuming the enemy is drawing a weapon while moving, gets disarmed, and then you are asking if they can draw a second weapon.

By my reading of your question, the enemy already has a weapon in hand, and you are asking if they can draw a different weapon as part of their move (after they are disarmed).

If the enemy has not completed their move action, they can draw a weapon as part of that move action. The rules do not specify that it has to happen at the beginning of the move action, so any time during the move action is allowed.

So if the disarm/sunder happens at reach, then the enemy moves an additional 5' before ending their move action, they may draw a new weapon to attack with.

If the disarm/sunder happens when they are adjacent, the GM needs to decide if the enemy move action has ended or not. Technically this would be dependent on whether the readied action was triggered off of "enemy gets next to me" vs "enemy makes an attack". Personally as a GM, I would always give the player with the readied action the benefit of the doubt. Their intent is clearly to prevent the enemy from attacking, so even if they said "enemy gets next to me", I would count that enemy move action as over. (I don't play readied actions as "wish" style gotchas).

What bbangerter said. Plus:

If you have the Two-Weapon Fighting feat, you can draw two light or one-handed weapons in the time it would normally take you to draw one.

That was the scenario I had in mind, yes. Thanks for the thorough response--that makes sense.

Sorry, I missread the scenario. But even still my response still holds true, as I stated they can only draw One weapon as part of that action (without quick draw, or two-weapon fighting apparently). If they already had a weapon drawn prior to the movement then nothing is stopping them from drawing another weapon as part of that movement (besides possibly the lack of a free hand, which would be a non-issue after they are disarmed). Just note, as others have stated, it must be done during the movement. So if they are disarmed before the end of their movement they can indeed draw a new weapon as they keep moving, but if they have reached the end of their movement before they are disarmed then no they cannot draw a new weapon as part of that move action.

If they have QuickDraw though… then they can draw an unlimited number of weapons in a single round as free actions (given that your game doesn’t play with a house rule limiting the number of free actions one can take) making it possible for them to draw a new backup every time they get disarmed until they run out of weapons on their person.
